5-0 out of 5 stars Audiology's answer to psychopharmacology
This book proposes that even very minute distortions and irregularities in a person's hearing can affect how he acts.It offers what seems to be an effective treatment for dyslexia, depression, autism, hyperacusis, tinnitus, and even stuttering using altered sounds to retrain the hearing. It clearly & simply describes the scientific functions of the hearingprocess along with the disorders and the actual treatment.Guy Berardcomes across as a thorough researcher and a compassionate doctor.Itclaims a 93 percent cure rate for depression within a 10 day course oftreatment, I'd say that's impressive. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars !
Excellent book for acupuncturists. It lost one star because they use color coding for some of the diagrams and the diagrams are in black and white! Their Atlas has all the diagrams in color and is also a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remember Who It's For
I was very unhappy with the last review. As an Acupuncturist with years of training this is THE text for Auricular Therapy. This text is not intended for use by the lay-person. Being a nurse in Western Medicine does NOT qualify one to practice acupuncture. If you are a practitioner or student looking for a great source this is a wonderful text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Auricular Therapy: A Comprehensive Text
As a nurse, let alone as a lay person, this book is so technical and full of very poorly unlabled picture diagrams including the fact that all the color coded shaded picture diagrams are printed in black and white, makes it impossible to relate to the reading/studying of this book. Even when used with the Auricular Therapy Reflex Chart it is very difficult to comprehend. I have studied many medical books in my career and this was one of the poorest I have ever dealt with.I was exteremly disappointed in this book and would not recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW !
I was implanted 2 years ago and probably should have read more before getting the CI.This book is magnificant. So many of the analogies she uses and experiences that Arlene encounters were so familiar to me.It is importnat to note that not all persons who are implanted do as well as Arlene or myself; sometimes they don't work at all.But it was amazing to read Arlene's story and recall my first year with sound; and because of the similiarities in our experiences I felt a kinship to Arlene.I was unable to put the book down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with Hope
I read Arlene Romoff's book before deciding to have cochlear implant surgery.I was delighted with her matter of fact, candid, humorous, and personal diary of everyday events and the personal struggle she has gone through with a hearing loss.3-0 out of 5 stars Great, But Incomplete
This book is beautifully written by a woman who discovers that her cochlear implant has changed her life. It has many inspiring passages and, if you already have a CI, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you read this.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for parents of hearing impaired children
This book explains toparents of hearing impaired children thevariousprocedures and types of devices developed to meet the needs of these children. In concise language that the laymen can understand, this story gives accurate information regarding the use of hearing devices and some of the problems that may arise from their use.It also presents to the professionals the feelings and needs of the parents,The author uses both humor and pathos to describe the many problems faced by both the parents of hearing impaired children and the professionals who work with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Even If It Doesn't Apply to You
I've been trying to get my parents and grandmother to wear hearing aids for decades -- all to no avail. They say that hearing aids don't work and they'd be embarrassed by the looks. So when I came across this book, which describes in close, interesting and lively detail everything you need to know about different types of hearing loss, how hearing aids work, the strengths and weaknesses of various assistive devices, the importance of hearing to proper language and social development, and most importantly, the emotional aspects of hearing loss for both parents and children, I knew this was the book for me.No matter that this is meant for parents of young children; the information is useful to anyone who knows anyone hard of hearing, and the writing intimate and engaging even if you don't.After reading the book, I understand better some of the old attitudes and social constraints that keep my family from taking responsibility for their own health -- and now I have the facts (and a long list of inspirational stories!) that will give them the courage to get the help they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I wish this book had been available when my son was diagnosed with a mild to moderate hearing loss 12 years ago.It is very informative and provides great information.I had found it difficult to find information regarding the hard of hearing child when my son was first diagnosed. It is also wonderfully comforting to read the experiences of other parents - it made me realize that I certainly was not alone.I bought an extra copy and gave it to my son's hearing itinerant so she could share it with other families. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For any parent considering a cochlear implant for a child
Collaboratively written by Patricia M. Chute (Associate Professor, Department of Communication Disorders, Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, NY) and Mary Ellen Nevins (Professor, Department of Communication Disorders and Deafness, Kean University, Union, New Jersey), The Parents' Guide To Cochlear Implants is a straightforward and highly accessible guide written especially for the parents of deaf children. Detailing in highly accessible, no-nonsense language the pros and cons of cochlear implants, each detail of the surgical procedure, how implants are used as tools for language development, information about device maintenance, a special section about cochlear implants and deaf culture that stresses the importance of consensus building rather than vehement attempts to persuade deaf people to accept implants, or vehement attempts to dissuade parents from opting for implant surgery, and much more. The Parents' Guide To Cochlear Implants is an absolute "must" read for any parent considering a cochlear implant for their child. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A travesty
This book and all others of this ilk espouse the philosophy that those who are deaf just have to learn to live with it. I say this is wrong. Science can put an end to this condition but these scientists and researchers choose not to do so. It is more profitable to keep bilking the deaf out of what little money they can scrape together from their menial jobs for hearing aids that don't really help and for visits to doctors who look in a person's ears and "sorrowfully" announce that nothing can be done to restore hearing. Money is wasted by organizations to pay for close captions that are garbled most of the time, especially on news programs. Taxes are wasted on schools for the deaf where the deaf are taught that they are losers and have no right to expect any of the good things in life that hearing people take for granted. Interpreters charge a fortune for their services. Books like this offer no comfort or peace of mind. They are just part of schemes to make more dishonest money. Reading a book like this is going to make hearing people stop making fun of the deaf? I don't think so. Easy for a hearing person to write a book like this and say, "just live with it." If the author is deaf, then he has had his head buried in the sand. Save your money, everyone. Don't waste your time and money on books like this. If you want fairy tales, read Mother Goose or Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. ... Read more
