5-0 out of 5 stars Better late than never.
It's taken a long time for this disorder to be recognized for what it is and it still has a long way to go in becoming more well known. The book is not an easy read, but then the disorder is not easily diagnosed either.Hopefully someone will write about Central Auditory Processing Disorders to suppliment this complex and intensive book for the sake of learning how to explain this highly unknown handicap to those who have trouble understanding that it is not a hearing loss problem but rather an auditory information processing difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
This book is indispensible for the audiologist/SLP/parent/professional working with APD.I only wish we could have read this one BEFORE the text books in grad school..would have made much more sense. Very nicely written, presenting of scenarios was important...more info to assimilate to your childs difficulty. May of seemed cut and dry to some, but if it was not, you would be reading the unabridged version and toting it on wheels. Not everyone uses the same categorization strategy...but that is the beauty of research and ongoing learning...take some info from each and you are well rounded.Maybe those who chose to go only half way through the bookand not PAST the case studies to the theraputic ideas are the same ones hoping for a quick remedy. This disorder takes time and patience and an informed parent.Good Luck..... challenges and good times are ahead. Thanks Terri for giving us all a small part of you....A fellow CCC-A

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the Whole Book Before you Review It!
For the reader who said that this book is depressing, consists entirely of case studies, and provides no concrete information regarding diagnosis or, especially, treatment, I couldn't help but notice that you wrote your review when you had only read half of the book. Read on! You will find specific recommendations for diagnosis, understanding APD and its relationship to language and learning, and tons of treatment approaches that offer hope for children and adults with APD. The case studies serve to illustrate how these disorders affect people in the real world, and you may see yourself, your child, your parent, or your spouse in them. But this is the only book written for the layperson that really, truly does provide guidance that is scientifically sound from a world renowned expert in the field. Next time, please read the whole book before you review it!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebuilt.. review
As a cochlear implantee ( I also have an Bionic Ear from Advanced Bionics) I highly recommend this book for any one with a cochlear implant, any candidate, or just anyone who is interested in how this amazing technology has had impact on those of us that either suddenly or over a period of time, became deaf. Michael combines a lot of technological information, along with the emotional journey we CI users go through. His description of becoming cyborg and what that means describes how technology today can have an effect on humans. M ichael is a brilant writer with an engaging style. At times this is not an 'easy read" because of the many references to technology, and his use of a sophisticated vocabulary.. but over all, it adds to the other books that describe the cochlear implant journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and unique book
I enjoyed reading this book. It gives a unique insight into what it is like to use a prosthetic sensory device. Chorost has done a great job of describing the odd sound sensations that he experienced as he learned to use the implant. Since he had spent many years hearing with the aid of amplifiers, he can describe the artificial hearing in terms of sounds that a hearing person can relate to.
5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing autobiography of not only restored hearing, but new associations with machine
Author Michael Chrost become a cyborg in 2001, when his new ear was booted up. Born hard of hearing, he became completely deaf in his thirties - and chose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull to artificially restore his hearing. Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human provides an intriguing autobiography of not only restored hearing, but new associations with machine as a result of silicon and flesh joining, resulting in newfound social issues and ethical concerns.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very good (but somewhatscattered) book-length FAQ
My one quibble with Dr. Vernon's book is that the smorgasboard of questions to which he provides answers seems a bit arbitrary and haphazard. For example, how about answering the question about what the current leading theories of tinnitus causation are, or what (in Dr. Vernon's vast experience) is the best treatment strategy for someone who suffers from this condition? You must look elsewhere for that kind of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gets you well informed on tinnitus!
Having mild tinnitus and wanting to learn a little bit of how the future might make it worse, and what I could do to keep it from getting worse, I needed a good source of information. I found a lot of info on the web, but soon understood I needed info of a more reliable and unbiased kind. So I read this book "Tinnitus: Questions and Answers" and was very satisfied. It covers the topic of tinnitus both in depth and width, and it does so in an unbiased and easy to understand way.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is so very hepful
When I was first diagnosed with Tinnitus a month ago, I was thoroughly confused. The audiologist who confirmed the hearing loss was of the " deal with it" school.I needed more than that.My greatest source of help has been the American Tinnitus Association (ATA.org) and this is a book produced by them.If you are experiencing this phenomenon or if you have someone in your family who is, this book is a terrific source of information. It is done in a question and answer format and I can almost assure you that any question you might have is covered in this book in some fashion or another. And the reader is never made to feel that they are stupid for asking "that" question. It was very helpful to me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars INSIGHTFUL AND RESEARCHED
This book reads well, offers many methods for relief from tinnitus, and makes us think hard about our own character traits. Hogan's story is compelling, and he claims we can all find real help with our hearing "problem." He also gets into some interesting discussions on how the brain's pathways are set up. Engaging psychology! (I also recommend Paul Twitchell's The Flute of God - to fill Hogan's book out with more-than-inspiring notions about "the psychology of spirit," the dynamics of spiritual sound.)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Sound
Psychoacoustics is the study of how sound affects the human nervous system. One of the pioneer researchers in this exciting new field is Joshua Leeds, a composer, writer, and consultant. He has analyzed and compiled the studies and known data in The Power of Sound, his latest book.5-0 out of 5 stars Are the sounds you live in healing or hurting?
Music is one of our most beloved art forms. It endures because of the way it makes us feel. The essence of music is sound.Current research tells us that music -- and all waveforms of sound -- can be a vital stimulant, a "nutrient" for the nervous system with the power to heal ... or harm. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insights into Counseling with Hard of Hearing & Deaf
This is layperson version of Harvey's book: Pschotherapy with Deaf and H-O-H People. The title must be special to those with hearing loss, since I heard a blind golfer (Kevin Hall) speak that he too listens with the heart.
4-0 out of 5 stars Insights
I bought and read this book because of a recommendation given to my husband by his communications course instructor.First of all, just having it with me was a communication helper.People would ask about the title and I would explain what it was about and why I was reading it.Secondly, I liked the book because it detailed numerous real life examples of relationships of those who are hearing impaired and includes the writer's/ psychologist's interactions, observations and recommendations for those individuals. But it was also very emotional reading and it taught me some things about myself and my communication issues. My only negative comment: I would have liked to see a few less examples and some sort of summation -- "a putting together of it all" at the end, but the author didn't do so.But I liked the book and think it will prove even more helpful as I read through certain portions again with a view to applying what I learn. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven writing mars the usefulness of the information...
Being a tinnitus sufferer to a small degree, I picked up a copy of Tinnitus Treatment And Relief by Jack A. Vernon at the library the other day. This is one of those books you could either think is absolutely great or something that you shouldn't read unless you have a medical degree.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of tinnitus and available treatments
The feature of this book that makes it so helpful is the unbiased overview of the various available treatments. You may wince to hear your favorite home remedy analyzed in strictly scientific terms, but the knowledge can beas refreshing as a splash of cold water on your face. The variety oftopics covered--medication, depression, masking, habituation, ginkgo,etc.--indicates that Dr. Vernon wanted this book to be a comprehensiveguide to treatment, not just promote one clinic's speciality over another. As a tinnitus sufferer myself, this book was a indispensable tool in tryingto understand what I was up against.I particularly liked the presentationof data--treating the reader like a fellow researcher able to form his/herown conclusions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book has so much to offer for the hearing-impaired and their families.I almost skipped over it because it is the author's story of losing his hearing as an adult. My son was diagnosed at age 4 1/2.I am so glad that I decided to read it!Myers offers a wealth of technical information along with an impressive list of internet resources.Perhaps the most important aspect of the book is the emotional insight in dealing with hearing loss.I definitely learned to be more patient with my son after reading this book. I visited the author's website and emailed him about his helpful book.He even emailed back with more suggestions for my son!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-Felt, Exquisitely Written Piece!
If you have loss of hearing, the prose and memoirs by Dr. Myers will be profoundly familiar. You will find yourself sitting and listening to this friend as he shares secrets you seldom discuss with anyone. The author offers rich experiences in roller coaster rides of emotion. He is insightful, humorous, sensitive, revealing, encouraging--and often painfully honest. You feel his torment and elation, and through it, not only come to know the author, but clearly more about living with hearing loss. 5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring hearing loss
This book is wonderful and useful in a variety of ways. It deserves all of the praise it has earned. The chapter "Aids and Advice" contains a helpful subsection, "Advice for Friends and Family Members" that is invaluable. Tips such as "invite us to a quiet place," "get our attention," "face the light and face us," "rephrase," "create a context," and "speak slowly" are essential for successful communication with people with hearing loss since, for many people with hearing loss, lip-reading is necessary or at least desirable. 2-0 out of 5 stars Foreword Does Not Match the Book
You may attribute the two star rating to the adverse impact of the Foreword. Here's why --This is a review not so much of the text as to the comments made by Professor Philip Lieberman (Brown University, Cognitive and Linguistic Science and Anthropology) in his foreword to The Emergence of the Deaf Community in Nicaragua, by Laura Polich (Gallaudet University Press, Washington, DC 2005).As one of the implied targets of Prof. Lieberman's criticisms, I feel it is incumbent upon me to address at least his most extraordinary points.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference!
I first read this book when my son was diagnosed with hearing loss. Here I found the information that I needed to understand his audiogram. There are many good suggestions for modifications in school.I have used several passages to help my son's teachers learn about hearing loss.I refer to this book again and again. This book would be helpful for a hearing-impaired adult or for a family member of someone with hearing loss.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Hearing Impaired and their Familes
The author is concise and acurate with information on hearing loss and its ramifications on communication. The book deals in depth with psychosocial aspects of hearing loss and provides useful tips to ease communicationfriction between individuals with hearing loss and their families. As anindividual with a hearing loss, I wish I would have read this years ago. However, as a graduate student in Audiology, the chapter on hearing aids isout of date.A second edition possible?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This book has very little information in it and leans more towards the touchy feely approach ie how are you going to deal with it, attitudes etc. Unfortunately what I wanted was more precise information on differentcauses of hearing loss as well as tests used to determine it (as I am goingthrough this right now). I wanted to understand what the doctors were doingand why but this book was a waste of time. ... Read more
