4-0 out of 5 stars Good News Bad News
If you are in your sixties, seventies, or beyond - or even if you are a precocious fifty-year-old, there is much to be had in this ultimately enigmatic series of essays by feminist, scholar, activist and mystery houndCarolyn Heilbrun. Thoughtful, introspective, funny and only occasionally cantankerous, Heilbrun strikes many a familiar chord in examining the oddly satisfying process of aging, if not gracefully, at least with some unexpected zest.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Conundrum Wrapped in an Enigma
Carolyn Heilbrun wrote this celebration of life after sixty shortly after deciding not to carry out her long-determined plan to commit suicide at 70 and six years before killing herself at 77.To know that outcome increases the frustration and the spasm of anger at her -- how could she so exquisitely detail the joy she found in living over the last decade and a half of her life, and then one day slam the door on those joys through, I understand, an overdose of sleeping pills and a plastic bag around the head for good measure. The clue must lie in this book's last essay, On Mortality, and what Heilbrun seems to fear and foresee in that chapter, that at some increasing age indifference to life succeeds pleasure in life.
1-0 out of 5 stars The lady opted out
It is difficult to relate to this book having the knowledge that Heilburn killed herself -with the consent of her son-because she felt it was all over.Perhaps her isolation had more to do with depression or some such than the spin she puts on it in the book. Her suicide was presented as a rational and logical choice. I don't know. She was an excellent scholar and a feminist thinker at the right time-so kudos to her memory for that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful textbook
I've been studying for a "psychology of aging" exam, & used Dr.Belsky's book to help with my studying: it proved to be of great help, especially because the whole book is written in a narrative, conversational way, which helps the reader. All the major developments in aging are contained in the book: historical, basic information on gerontology & geropsychology, lots of "life-span approach" information, & all that is needed to understand how the (relatively new) field of gerontology came to expand & become a field that is now growing at a quick pace.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Change Even for a Twentysomething
I have been taking Glenda's yoga class for the past 2 years and from day 1 I have been impressed with her.She is amazing. She's beautiful, and toned and in awesome shape. All I can say at age 29 is, I hope I look half as good as she does when I reach her age.To all of those individuals who are younger, don't overlook this book because you think its for the older generation.Glenda has helped me lose weight, become the most toned I've ever been, and feel the best I've ever felt. The only down side to getting the book is that you can't hear her incredibly soothing voice in your home.Yoga has changed my life. And as long as I'm able, I will practice this method. This book gives you a good demonstration of what she teaches in her classes and I highly recommend it to people of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Grace"
Glenda has been my yoga instructor since her practice began. I have experienced, first hand, her knowledge and respect for the human body, as well as the peace, patience, and poise she models to each class. She is a "fireball"; the perfect combination of strength, and softness. All you have to do is follow her guide to the age-old secret of Yoga, and before you know it, you'll be in shape!! If you are not able to attend her classes, or if you just want to jazz up your own yoga practice, or even if you are totally new to Yoga, this book is meant for you! You will be inspired by her incredible form, swept away by the beautiful view, and enlightened by the detailed descriptions, and explanations of all of the healing qualities of Yoga. Burn a candle, take some deep breaths, and follow Glenda's powerful routine. Buy this book, and you will be drinking from the fountain of youth!!

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS! You should see how good her students look
This book is incredible- it explains the benefits, pose by pose, and makes the reader want to take better care of him/herself starting yesterday.Notice how good SHE looks! Also, the transformations that happen with the people who regularly do her yoga program are stunning. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to age gracefully, manage stress, or transform their body to a level of fitness & flexibility they never thought possible. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Foolish photos
This book contains photographs of some of the women I admire most. Unfortunately, the women are posed holding a large sword as a prop to indicate their fearlessness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent mid-life - we ain't done yet!
After looking at three of the photographs and reading the first page of the introduction, I immediately purchased three copies of this book - one for myself, and one for each of my sisters. Now halfway through looking at these amazing women and reading their inspiriational stories, I am empowered and inspired.Life is long, and the middle of it is fabulous! My first book was published when I was 53 and my next one is due out when, God willing, I will be 57.So take heart all you "women of an age."The best is yet to come, as the authors of this book and the women in its pages will show you. You, too, can join this company in making this the most delightful time of your life!Give this book to every "Boomer Babe" you know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice, some unique information
This book purports to assist you, O Baby Boomer, to remove 10 years of aging in only 10 weeks. This book has no schematics to build a time machine, instead it's a guide to vitamin supplements, health issues such as sexuality, diabetes and heart disease, how to preserve your mental accuity and much more. I was surprised to find some interesting nuggets of information that, taken together, form a good blueprint for healthful habits. Some of the habits (quitting smoking) are a given. Others, such as finding supplements like bilberry to ward off eye problems, are not so well-known. 5-0 out of 5 stars SHED 10 YEARS IN 10 WEEKS: Mostly DietAdvice--But Worth It
When a dieter seeks to reclaim youth, health, and vigor, he or she would most likely turn to the newest trend: human growth hormone. Now there is nothing inherently wrong with that as there is a clear place for HGH as a tool for health, but before one goes that route, it might make more sense to go back to the basics of a balanced diet and food supplements. In SHED 10 YEARS IN 10 WEEKS, Dr. Julian Whitaker and Carol Colman urge the health conscious to reappraise their diet so as to eliminate harmful foods and increase beneficial ones. The approach of the authors is bedrock common sense mixed with the knowledge that each brings to the table, he with his years of expertise in diet and nutrition and she with her own contributions to Melatonin and hormone research. What separates these two from other more widely known authors is their ability to take complicated issues related to diet and supplements and make these issues ring with clarity.Whitaker and Colman divide their book into 10 steps or chapters, with each step focusing on one aspect of dietary advice. For example, in step 2, called "Lose A Decade's Worth of Fat," they outline a 10 week program that urges the reader to do all the right things: eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables; establish an optimum intake of carbohydrates, protein, and fat; cut down on red meat, add soy to the diet, recognize that some fats (like Omerga-3 fats) are necessary for cardiovascular health; choose which phytochemicals might help be useful; be aware of the importance of soluble and insoluble fibers. Now all this is what your Granny might have been telling you for years, but Whitaker and Colman manage to punctuate Granny's sage advice with the absolute need to listen to her and to them. The major focus of this book is on diet and supplements. It is interesting to note that if one were to follow their advice prior to adding human growth hormone to a health regimen, then the results of that HGH might likely deliver the fancy promises of the hype.SHED 10 YEARS IN 10 WEEKS is highly recommended in that it takes a complicated subject and breaks it down into easily manageable chunks.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Healthy Beginning
I began reading this book after I quit smoking hoping for a healthy new beginning. It is absolutely a delightful understanding of how you can reverse past mistakes and embark on a fresh start to reverse aging.I have basically purchased many of the suggested items and have seen a remarkable change.Alot of the items were somehow difficult to find such as the high potency multi vitamins without iron which was suggested but I am searching vigorously.I think anyone who reads this will understand when I tell them to purchase this for friends and loved ones.Awesome reading! ... Editorial Review

This philosophy/psychology work on character and aging is not a self-help book but rather a self-perception book--philosophical, wise, and deep. "What does aging serve? What is its point?" asks James Hillman, and proceeds to examine those questions fully. The loss of short-term memory, for example, enables us to better recall the past and review our lives. "On the one hand, brain cells may be flaking off like autumn leaves in a deciduous forest; on the other hand, a clearing is being made, leaving more space for occasional birds to alight." Hillman also likens short-term memory loss to a warehouse packed full of the inventory of life, emptying the latest files "to preserve enough emotional space for evaluating what has been there for a long time." Other aging markers also have benefits for character, reflection, and imagination. We wake up at night not only because our old bodies have to urinate, for example, but also because our minds are open to the wonders and mysteries of night.Read more

From the first page to the last, this guide offers practical, hands-on tips for navigating the maze of eldercare. I had anticipated that this book would be the same as all of the others that I have read in my quest to maintain my youthful look and feel, however I was absolutely shocked. Typically the books I have read have one or two chapters that contain content that I can relate too, considering people my age (35) generally do not think about the aging process yet. I sit at a desk, but do not want to look and feel like I do. This insightful and personal way that the auther addresses not only ideas that help me in the long run, but things I can do to change me here and now. I have every belief that if I try these techniques, I will remain Forever Young. A must read for anyone that wants to LIVE life at its best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST book on Caregiving I've ever read!
This book in superb. Having an ailing parent, I turned to this book for the helpful tips discussed on the jacket cover. But it was so much more than that....it made me feel understood. The plain-speak and thoughtfulness in the text made the goal of caregiving seem much more attainable....and less overwhelming. The stories and examples of others in a caregiving capacity helped me to feel not alone.I strongly recommend this book, whether you yourself are a caregiver or not, it is a must read book of the year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally great advice for caring for an aging parent
The Caregiver's Survival Handbook is a great resource for me in caring for an aging father. The book has given me great ideas on how to plan for his healthcare and his general well being while allowing me to care for my own family. This is the first book I have found that addresses these issues in such a positive way. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Act Three (if you have lots of money)
I was eager to read this book, but quickly discovered that most of the advice and insight provided really only would only be helpful to people who are dripping with money. Not everyone can afford apsycho-therapist or a consulting firm to give them advice on making the transition to retirement. How many of us can afford a private spa to cool off after workouts? How many of us can expect to find diversion in retirement by being on the board of directors?1-0 out of 5 stars A Self-Serving, Unimportant Book
In my opinion, The Third Act, a new book by Edgar M. Bronfman is a bust as an offering toward establishing a more clear, balanced and reasonable view of what retirement looks like and will look like in the U.S.But, first, give me a moment to digress.1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty thin
I ordered this book as part of my retirement planning. It did confirm some things I already knew, i.e. you need a plan, you need to keep active and you need to keep healthy. These are hardly new concepts. While it does have interesting interviews with well known, well heeled personalities, their options are quite different than most.It lacked any meaningful advice or planning tools for self discovery. It is great reading for the American aristocracy. But I don't qualify. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an outrageously good book
Thanks to Ruth Jacobs for this liberating book. Far too many people give up the fight when they hit certain age milestones. But why become "old" simply because you no longer succumb to the siren song of corporate marketers. Which is one of the main reasons older people are considered irrelevant--you're not as easily manipulated by advertising pitches as you were when you were younger. So, let this book be your companion as you fight the good fight against stereotypes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Be Your Fabulous SELF at Fifty or Older!
This is a terrific guide written by a "Power-Granny" (--my term for and outrageous older woman of any age--)!5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Star winner
