5-0 out of 5 stars Writing and the arrow of time
This is a truly wonderful book, from which I have received many inputs for my own scholarly endeavours. Here I would just like to point out what is probably a slip of the keyboard, on p. 211 of the English edition. In the formula "'before' to the left of 'after'", occurring twice, in the first occurrence 'left' should presumably be 'right'. Writing from the right to left, as Israelis do, does indeed seem to suggest a different direction of the flow of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evaluation of Our Real Memories
Every psychiatrist has some quick tests to check on how your memory is working: reciting digits forward and backward, recalling the presidents sequentially, remembering three objects after three minutes, and so on.Such functions of memory are important, but they are not what we think of as real, personal memory, the subjective recall of what has gone on in our lives, the family reunions, childhood joys and traumas, successive homes, and so on.These stored personal experiences form our "autobiographical memory."It has only been known as such for about twenty years, basically because the other types of memory (like digit recall) have been more easily subject to psychological testing. The autobiographical memory is the main subject of essays in _Why Life Speeds Up as You Get Older: How Memory Shapes Our Past_ (Cambridge University Press) by Douwe Draaisma (translated from the Dutch by Arnold and Erica Pomerans). There are surprisingly few hard answers in this book.In writing about the near-death experience, for instance, Draaisma says that examining the hypotheses that might explain it makes clear that "... all they amount to is a handful of conjectures, a few statistical links and suggestive analogies."Nonetheless, our autobiographical memories are such an integral part of ourselves that it is fascinating to learn how scientists have been trying to explain just how this vital part of personality operates, and how much of the memory capacity that we take for granted is still mysterious and beyond even initial probes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful writer, eloquent and profound
I'm amazed at the way Mr. Hollis can phrase something that my soul has understood on some level, but never been able to put into words. He has an incredible understanding of the human concition, and calls upon us to ask the hard questions. This book is particularly meaningful to me, as I find myself in the middle of my life, transitioning into a new consciousness of, forand about myself and the world around me.I'm studying to become a therapist, and Jung's ideas resonate with me.I'm so glad I found this book! Many thanks to Dr. Hollis.I hope one day I may be able to attend one of his lectures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Digging deeply for buried treasure
As with his previous books, James Hollis offers no easy answers, no magic formula for happiness, no 10 or 12 or 20 simple steps -- which explains the disappointment of some previous reviewers, I guess, who obviously wanted the hard work done for them. But isn't that one of the most pernicious illusions we have to shed, if we truly want to find personal meaning? We have to accept that *we've* got to do the digging, the discovering, the accepting. Even if we have helpful guides along the way, in the end it's up to us, since an adult is ultimately responsible for his/her life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant for anyone who wrestles with the meaning of his/her life
From the title, it seems that the book is mainly for middle aged people maybe 40 to 65 years old.I just finished this wonderfully insightful book and only wish I had read it in my 20's when I started my serious soul searching, mind wracking and heart breaking regarding this life I was thrust into. In a very readable and accessible manner, Mr. Hollis clearly points out signposts we probably all have seen but maybe either brushed some of them aside mistakenly in our confusion or were just too overwhelmed to see them for what they were. Here, in the cold light of day, he presents Jungian concepts coupled with actual experiences and examples to drive home points that soon seem obvious. That is how I identify a good teacher and/or writer: he makes it look obvious and easy. Make no mistake even to the extent this book clarifies a lot in it's presentation, the work is still all there for you to do and it is not going to be easy. It is a labor of love and life to live this life and to do so with optimal meaning which doesn't always correspond with optimal enjoyment or happiness but as you'll see, once one's life is full of meaning, the rest will follow on it's own as is appropriate. This book is a treasure trove of valuable insight to anyone who sees more to life than making money, having power etc., etc. until death takes it all away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
This a a very good book on sex and relationships. There are probably not more than a dozen pages that apply only to 50+ people.Almost any age group could profit from the advice. It is of necessity a bit general, but it is well written, comprehensive, and useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Contentious
'Sex over 50' is a controversial book. While the authors might think it's safe, most responsible people believe that doing it while driving at that sort of speed is both irresponsible and dangerous. To quote Mario Andretti's review of the book in 'Wheels' Magazine (September 1999), 'Show consideration for other motorists. Either turn the air-conditioning to high or pull into a Motel 8.' ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for Mortals
I found this book days after leaving the hospital with a two year prognosis for a misdiagnosed illness. My head was spinning.I was making lists of questions and to do lists for leaving my 2 young children.Finding this book was a wonderful gift.It answered my questions and provided a realistic outlook for what to expect of a terminal condition. The book provides sample statements for calling your relatives and helps you to prepare for your doctor appointments.I visited a doctor today and I led the session and all of my questions were addressed before the exam occurred. This book should be recommended to all diagnosed with a terminal illness.Highly recommended book!

5-0 out of 5 stars ELDER RAGE gave me hope!
Not only does this book read like a fast-paced novel, but it provides real-life tools for the caregiver. Jacqueline Marcell's breezy, humorous style moves the story along and tempers a serious and heartbreaking subject--that of caring for elderly parents in general, and in particular those with memory impairments. The book is more than just one family's story. It is honest, insightful and full of helpful tips. (Through the Physician's Guide in the back of the book, I learned that my mother's sleeping pill 'can produce confusion.'
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You Have An Aging Parent
Jacqueline Marcell has given us a detailed roadmap on caring for aging parents. She gives us the benefit of her experience as a caretaker for both her father and mother. The book is riveting, emotional, funny, and filled with practical advice regarding taking care of yourself whiletaking care of your parents. If your aging parent is critical, demanding, difficult, obstinate, hostile, or depressed, you'll find techniques to help you cope and effectively deal with the situation. If you are caring for an aging parent, this is a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars realism at it finest
A wonderful book full of truth, love, humor(most important)when dealing with ones parents, who are now in the final stages of their lives, with diseases, that are not recognized by the masses.Alzheimer is a horrible way to die, leaving one who does the care giving, memories, that can both be humorous, or devastating.I throughly enjoyed this book, and admire the author for her writing it. ... The first of the baby-boomers have reached the half-century mark. And, as always, they're changing our cultural view of things. Dowling shares her own transition to maturity. She takes a look at the issues affecting women as they age in our culture: sex after menopause, marrying more than once and finances, to name a few. Armed with enough information, maybe we women can start to view age as a good thing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Wonderful Life
I admit it's been a while since I read this book. On the other hand, I found it so pivotal I have given it to friends and gone out to buy more copies, one of which I am starting to reread now. This book is funny and it is sad. Most of all, I found it realistic and affirmative. 4-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella Comes of Age...
Years ago I read Dowling's The Cinderella Complex and found I shared manyof her views on being female in the 70's. Red Hot Mamas carries us ontothe Middle Years for emancipated women.4-0 out of 5 stars Mamas should be #1 on the list for women looking at 50.
I am 47, and this book has confirmed my strange feeling that that the 50'swill be outstanding!Once we make peace with the wrinkles, bags &sags, we can truly leave behind all the emotional constraints of our firsthalf-century.We can finally move beyond our frenzied and frustratinglives to realize the dreams we had at age 12.What, quit the corporate ratrace & become a dancer?Yes!Let our hair turn gray, don longflowered skirts and start a greenhouse?Yes, these and even more"bizarre" pursuits! Collette Dowling shows us how the brickwalls defining our lives can be dismantled to reveal the paths of ourdreams.I for one can hardly wait for menopause!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, A Book That Makes Sense For Those With ADD
There are several super books on the subject of Attention Deficit Disorder and each has sections that stand out. However, "Fidget To Focus" is the one book that has it all. It explains the reasons why people with ADD do the things they do AND offers excellent suggestions and solutions, too. What I like best about the book is that it isn't trying to change anyone but instead encourages readers to use their unique (and natural) tendencies to their advantage. Finally, the workbook in the back is an excellent resource for people who are really serious about finding ways to make the most of their ADD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written & Helpful
"The New Love and Sex After 60" is a well written and helpful book. There is no question that older men and women may want to remain sexually active much longer than might have been supposed. The authors explain some of the normal changes brought about by aging and changing relationships. They also discuss possible issues brought about by illness. The tone throughout is upbeat and positive and the authors offer practical advice for maintaining a healthy intimate relationship. It's probably time for another revision that would cover a few more recent developments in medicine but this book is still worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars But if you are not looking for advice on HRT...
I hate to see this book represented by 1 reviewer giving it 1 star. I teach in a gerontology program and I found this book very useful in preparing my class on sexuality. The most important message I got from this book is that sex after 60 is normal and natural, but different from sex earlier in life. One point I did not see in my other reading--there is a discrepancy in the number of men and women that increases with age so that by age 85, there are 41 men for every 100 women.I have read many proposed solutions to this, all assuming that men have an innate lower life expectancy than do women. Dr. Bulter's approach is that men need to learn to take better care of their health so that they live longer. This was the most positive, pro-male solution I have read.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book
The knowledgeable reader who may recently have discontinued HRT and is looking for hard data re. resulting physiologic and sexual changes is unlikely to find much useful here. ... Read more
