5-0 out of 5 stars Growing Older TakesCourage---And Laughter
Getting older takes courage, inspiration, faith and the gift of laughter..at ourselves. I'm in my 70's, so I know some of the aging process. The ability to laugh at ourselves, to not take us too seriously is a tremendous help. I've read that laughter is good medicine; a healing factor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
Great guidebook for anyone interested in "LIVING." Informative, entertaining, and motivating all in one read. Probably should be required reading for incoming freshman at University. Would have a more lasting impact and retention than most books found on traditional "required reading" lists.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wise, sensible book on healthy aging
A smart, common sense alternative to all the junk science books out there on how to stay young forever.Deals with all the components which go into healthy aging from finances to fitness to staying active and finding fulfillment. No magic pills or secret fountains of youth, just practical, entertaining advice.A fun, informative read. As a a legal aid hotline attorney and owner a retail medical supply and equipment business, I feel this book would be very useful for my clients and customers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining
I really enjoyed reading "Age Smart".It was not only full of useful and practical information but also very fun to read. The authors did a great job keeping the book light-hearted while providing solid information we can all use.I am someone who is in my late-thirties so the book spoke to me on many different levels.I understand now the importance of not only keeping my body in good shape, but that my financial and mental well-being is just as important.I recommend this book to everyone.I learned so much from reading it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
"What If It's Not Alzheimer's" will help all caregivers to cope with the loss of their loved ones as cognitively sound individuals. Whether Alzheimer's, multi-infarct, Parkinson's, FTD, or any of the dozens of other dementias, the perpetual grief and mourning felt by the caregivers will be the same. Dementia is a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of multi-infarct dementia is told in my own recently published memoir. I recommend "What If It's Not Alzheimer's" to anyone whose loved one is experiencing this terrible disease.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Knowing nothing about frontal lobe dementia, I found this a great resource in finding out what I can do to make my family member more comfortable, as well as exploring the resources available to me. Occasionally I got bogged down with the scientific reports, but overall it is a very accessible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An updated handbook packed from cover to cover with tips
While general public knows Alzheimer's best among the many dementias in existence, but Playing The Numbers is the first to address FTD, a specific group of dementias and one of the largest non-Alzheimer's groups. The resources and reference material comprising hat If It's Not Alzheimer's? provides the non-specialist general reader with an updated handbook packed with from cover to cover with tips and information for caregivers and sufferers alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life
Dr. Cranton - a pioneer in the anti-aging medical field -writes a fascinating account of the role of hormones in the aging process and how hormone replacement can slow that process.Included is reference tocurrent research as well as to the extraordinary results his patients haveachieved. After reading Dr. Cranton's book, I began taking melatonin andnow sleep much more soundly; I changed the kind of thyroid medication I'vebeen taking so that I no longer feel cold and sluggish (even though all thetests I had taken showed my thyroid functioning was within "normalrange"); I changed my estrogen replacement medication and began takingHGH. I'm feeling better than I have in years! ... Read more

Editorial Review

This groundbreaking book should definitely help further the movement ofwhat the authors call "a new gerontology." John Rowe, M.D., and RobertKahn, Ph.D., both members of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network, thoroughly debunk the myth that aging has to be a painful process ofdebilitation. Their research has shown that the influence of genetics shrinksproportionately as you get older, while social and physical habits becomeincreasingly integral to your state of health--both mental and physical. 4-0 out of 5 stars New perspective
Easy reading in simple language.Encouraging and uplifting.I love how it details the connection between social inter-actions and quality of life. Really good advice for maintaining independence in old age from a physical and mental perspective.Best of all, there is no pressure to rush out and make special purchases.I am getting copies as gifts for siblings - worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Successful Aging
I stumbled upon the book strictly by accident and ended up paying full list price at Barnes and Noble. After seeing the really great prices on Amazon, I reluctently sat down to read a few chapters to try and get my monies worth.Wow.To say the book was enlightening would be to offer a dis-service to the multi-year McArthur Foundation Study.I picked up a few things from the book that most readers will not and that is basic assumptions that Private Foundations and Private Research gathers far more information about a subject than Government sponsored projects. It occured to me that Government has pretty muched screwed up Social Security as well as providing for long term health care in America.Successful Aging gives an alternative to spending your final years in a Nursing Home. The book is very well thought through, well researched and backed up with countless citations that give credit where credit is due. I found the book an enjoyable read, almost a primer. After reading this book, I ordered out about three hundred dollars worth of additional books on aging. That should tell you something.By the way, I ordered another copy of the book in out of print library edition to add to my collection.Great Book!Great Read!Don't get old without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be a classic
The research findings reported in Successful Aging have been supported in a new 20-year study by an independent group of researchers. The study by Becca Levy of Yale Univerisity, et al, was reported in 2002.Simply stated, we can decide now to live longer and better.Having a positive attitude about aging is alone responsible for extending life by 7.5 years, and years of activity and involvment, not suffering. This is a very worthwhile read, despite what some stupid old fools have written before. ... Very helpful information presented from Dr. Gott on almost every health issue.Excellent purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars practical reading
I read Dr Gott's newspaper column all the time. The book is written in a similar manner. The advice is told in laymans terms and as a result is practical and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A straightforward primer for all-around better health
In Live Longer, Live Better: Taking Care Of Your Health After 50, popular medical columnist and physician Peter H. Gott, offers the non-specialist general reader a straightforward primer for all-around better health. Chapters address a wide range of common health concerns such as hypertension, anxiety and depression, sex, diabetes, stroke, cholesterol, osteoporosis, memory loss, senility and dementia, and much more. Presented in a simple question-and-answer format, Live Longer, Live Better is recommended reading; the health advice is quite pertinent to all ages, and in today's era of skyrocketing health care insurance prices, an ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful book
I am so glad I found this book.I have been struggling with retirement for the past four years and read many books.I liked the book so much I reread it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
I definitely agree with the other reviews in that this little book is well done with a lot of interesting tips and information.Preparing for retirement, emotionally/psychologically managing not being able to retire when initially planned, and actual retirement. My only hesitation with the book is that many of the people interviewed are upper income/upper management retirees. It is sometimes difficult to be able to relate to some of the transition problems/solutions discussed in the book when you're approaching retirement from a middle income/middle management or blue color perspective where finances may make some of the options less viable solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Way over 50!
I couldn't give this book 5 stars because, although it looks like a great book in and of itself, it should be titled, "Fitness Over 65" since most of the quotes, stories and photos are of people well over the age of 50, and more like over 65. Keep in mind if you are 52, like me, that with very little current exercise you might be better physically fit and beyond the simple exercises in this book. It's VERY basic. But if you haven't done anything beyond sitting on your couch munching chips and watching the tube your whole life, this book would be a perfect way to break into beginning to get fit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Safe, Reliable Fitness Instruction
This book is a good edition to your fitness library. A safe, effective and easy to follow program.Get this book instead of the numerous other books out there promising to help you stop aging and stay young forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get Moving!
I strongly feel the need to get moving and this book has the exercises geared for mature adults. After hearing scary stories about osteoporosis and heart problems, I recognize that much of our problems stem from inactivity and sedentary lifestyle. The choice is mine and this book can help me make the change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps you understand yourself, your parents, your friends
The most interesting section of this book for me was right at the beginning where she describes the "endangered generation," those born from 1966-1980. While, I don't usually like to be called endangered, I could completely relate to the description of the troubles our generation is going through- how we have it worse off financially than our parents did in their twenties, and how that explains why we are floating in this in-between stage. This is happening just at the developmental stage in our lives when we'd feel a lot better if we had more financial freedom and didn't have to ask our parents for help. The stresses of dating, not being able to afford more than a cheap apartment (or worse- having to move back in with our parents), and being educated but in a competitive job market, take their toll. At this age, our parents were already married, owned their own home, and had a stable job. So things have changed a lot, and it helps to know that! It frees you to accept society as it is today and make the most of it. She ends the section with a positive prediction that our generation, expecting the least out of life after our disappointing start at adulthood, will end up very successful and appreciating what we have more than other generations. Sheehy is very insightful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mapping this book against time
Conceptually excellent, but a dismally dreary read.5-0 out of 5 stars New Passages Really Helped
I found Sheehy's second "Passages" book almost as good as the first. As an aging baby boomer, the issues of recharting my life direction at middle age has been daunting to say the least.Second Passages provided the structure for this process.I also suggest "The Second Journey" by T. Athey as another good book - more focus on the issues of the Baby Boomer generation.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful reference for teachers and families
This book provides helpful insight into the mental disorders that afflict many elderly people. This can be useful to both educators and family members who are concerned about mental illness affecting the elderly. Teachers and professors can use this to help prepare family studies and human development students for problems that they may encounter in their work. Furthmore, families that are dealing with aging parents or loved ones can use this book to help understand what is going on and how to deal with them in a caring way. This book provides excellent case examples and analysis and I would reccomend it to anyone with an interest or connection in the field.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recycling Personified
If you've read one Gary Null book, you've read them all.He is no doubt highly knowledgeable and dedicated to his subject, but when I buy two books with different titles by Gary Null and find they are the same, I'm pretty annoyed. His early books were taken directly from Herbert Sheldon's Natural Hygience material, which I assume must not have been copyrighted, and I felt ripped off then, in the 70's as I did recently when Amazon was good enough to give me a refund for one of the books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Actually, sort of surprised
I haven't been impressed with Gary's books as of late.I completely agree with a couple of the reviewers who claim Gary's books are just recycled material, over and over again.I couldn't agree more.... until this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Null did an excellent job of educating the importance of diet
Dr. Null's writing style simplifies the jargon, and communicates recent scientific studies about the importance of diet and exercise in a clear and meaningful way. Fast-food and soft-drink distributors have infiltrated our schools while our educators and decision-makers slash P.E. classes and neglect the importance of teaching students the absolute importance of feeding our bodies right. Gary Null inform the general public that we can heal ourselves, we do not need to depend on prescriptions, and invasive medical techniques to fix a problem. And we can rid ourselves of our addiction to fast food and junk food. Supplement with nutrients that you can trust are pure, fresh and undiluted, Do a whole body cleanse with natural juices and fasting,

2-0 out of 5 stars okay, but overpriced
this is a very good book for introducing body/mind health issues. it covers a lot of territory. only thing is, is the references. the references used in this book are mostly from "pop" magazines such as psychology today, time, u.s. world, readers digest (!), etc. i personally do not consider these publications too legit, but that is my opinion. i got this book through the local library, i would recommend you do the same to see if you want to shell out the big bucks. or get it used, there are a lot of copies for sale.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book shows the relationship between the way one thinks and the waythe body feels. It is a very clear and easy to understand book showing theway that certain actions, functions and thoughts can change the way aperson's body feels and the health of the person. I found it veryinteresting and helpful to what I was wondering about. Expensive though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CELEBRATING THE JOURNEY!
I LOVED this book!I am a 55 year old female who has alwaysbeen commited to my life getter BETTER as I mature. There is not always a lot of support for that in our youth obsessed society. This is the BEST book that I have ever read that celebrates and honors the aging process. It has great stories and exercises and does it in such an entertaining and inspiring way. I feel rejuvenated and more excited about the second half of my life than I have in awhile and more grateful for the journey I have taken thus far. It also kicked in my creative juices about what I can do to make my life increasingly more FUN and fulfilled in every area of my life. My girlfriends have also thanked me over and over for sharing it with them. THANK YOU Marilyn & Nancy! ... Read more
