Anyone planning to place their family member in a nursing home should read this innovative book first. They author's insightful, yet relatively simple ideas show how a well designed nursing home can be a welcoming, life affirming place for your loved one to live.I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an medical supply business and often discuss nursing home related issues with my clients and customers.I found this book eyeopening and educational. If your relative is already in a nursing home, give the director a copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caring For My Mom-A Daughter's Point Of View.......
The activities director at my mother's nursing home(Tn.) brought this author and his book's to my attention. The nursing home administrator is currently having the entire staff read this line of book's(The Eden Project). I ordered "Life Worth Living" and "Learning From Hannah", because I want to be a part of what will make mom's life and other's a better place to be. I started reading "Life Worth Living" and was honestly amazed about how educational this paperback really was. Not only is this book easy to understand, it's extremely interesting! I can only pray that some day all nursing home facilities realize how beneficial the "Eden Project" really is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thoughtful and valuable resource
I find this book to be a very loving and thoughtful account of the stories of caregivers of loved-ones with Dimentia. It has practical advise on how to cope, where to go for support and even a some comical moments told with the utmost of respect!I would recommend this book to anyone who is a caregiver or knows someone who is.It seems we all know someone with this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book was nice to have around when I needed to talk to someone about how I felt, but felt guilty complaining when the people I was taking care of were going through such a difficult time. It was a very helpful companion and good to see what others have gone through and tried. I recommend it if you find yourself in the same unfortunate situation as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength For Caregivers, Understanding for CareProfessionals
This book offers solace and empathy to the caregivers of dementia patients. It presents the hard truths of this frightening disease from the caregiver's view, empathetically and humanely. From the voices of other caregivers who struggled through the course of this disease come very down-to-earth ideas and comfort for the caregivers who follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Those Struggling With Mid-Life
Game Plan is an excellent read for those who are struggling with their purpose and significance in life.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Second Half Career Advise
For those who have climbed the "ladder of success" and then wondered "is that all there is?", this book will help direct one in their pursuit of real meaning in life. While being driven from the early days of our first career to achieve "success" in line with the secular world, it is helpful to reflect on how our life can move to being of value to others. In redirecting our developed skills and ambitions, we can uncover real satisfaction and meaning from our contributions.Highly recommended for those who have already "achieved" much, but are looking to "significance" for the remaining years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent thesis, insights, writing, and recommendations.
This book is a gem and will impact the design for the rest of your life. It offers a critical challenge and practical strategies for creating significance in the second half of life. Bob Buford presents a refreshing view for being active in our middle and senior years. He cites that our accumulated experience and wisdom over our first 20 professional years have prepared us to truly take our gifts and talents to another level, to contribute to the lives of many, and to leave a legacy that continues to make a positive difference after we're gone. His insights are valuable. His recommendations work well. His references to God and Christian principles are sensitively presented and make good sense regardless of the reader's stance on faith. I've been using the strategies effectively for the past 6 months. I have an enhanced personal vision and purpose and an expanded set of goals for my next several decades. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on raw for Beauty AND Health
Tonya's down to earth story telling of compelling journey not only to the USA but also to raw and live foods is one of the best books on the raw or live foods lifestyle. She combines a beautiful inspirational story with excellent tips and advice for making the transition to Raw yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty And Raw Food - Natural Connection
I liked this book, at first I had a hard time getting into it at first because Tonya does not get straight to the point, but takes you on this incrediblely detailed journey about beauty and her longing for it, but I believe that was to ligitimize her point: that she was a normail, avarage woman with defect in her hip and late forties, yet was able to become her most beautiful through the raw food diet.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book brilliantly written
She has a gift for writing and captures her audience in story telling while at the same time she offers the best information one needs to know about raw food eating and how it pertains to beauty. This is a book I will always use for reference and lend to friends and familybut I would never give it away, because it is such a wonderful entertaining and captivating story and also a good reference, which is a unique combination. I love this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ooops! There go the piano lessons
This is the book that got me interested, once again, in neuropsychology and neuroanatomy. Yes, the immediate interest is that business of not wanting "to go gently into that good night." as Dylan Thomas wrote. How much will cognitive delcine affect me as I age (something we are all doing since birth - it isn't only the old who are aging).
1-0 out of 5 stars seriously disappointed
I was unable to finish this book because I found it too academic and pedantic; it is of little use to elderly people who seek guidance in regard to the problems of agying

I looked for a chicken soup book that would be for 60+ people and I found this! It's just great. But one thing thats not true: Anyone can read this and enjoy it! I am just a kid and I liked it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reality Check
This book is an excellent source of information on the body's aging processes. It will educate the reader on ways to identify lifestyle choices that may have a negetive impact on one's health. Written with a negetive undertone, this is a real slap-in-the-face, a good reality check.Makes you aware of your unhealthy habits and gives you options of control.Emphasis on being responsible for your own health and happiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book caused be to change many bad behaviors
I read the first Realage book in 2000 and it is the book that finally got me to exercise, floss daily, eat nuts, wear my seat belt, take vitamins and start many other healthy habits. When you start thinking of your behavior as making you older or younger it really make you conscious of the fact that you are damaging your body. I have read hundreds of books in my life but the Realage books have caused more change in me than any other. Sign on to Realage.com and take the survey to see what your real age is, read the book, and change your behavior so you can live an extra 10-20 years, your family will thank you.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ignores detoxification and other things
I thought this book had some useful information when I first read it several years ago. After I read it, I stopped taking selenium supplements and decreased my daily dosage of vitamin C to 2,000 mg. Then I got a tumor in my neck (spring 2000), and most recently a breast tumor. I read that selenium actually inhbits the growth of tumors, so I am upset for having followed Roizen's advice. Also, I learned that one can take up to 10 GRAMS of vitamin C per day with very beneficial results. This vitamin also helps prevent and fight cancer. Finally, Roizen completely omits any mention of the need for regular detoxification. He says it's okay to drink tap water! I have lost my respect for this author and am now selling his book. It's out of date. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"We all need models for how to live from retirement to past 80--with joy," writes George Vaillant, M.D., director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. This groundbreaking book pulls together data from three separate longevity studies that, beginning in their teens, followed 824 individuals for more than 50 years. The subjects were male Harvard graduates; inner-city, disadvantaged males; and intellectually gifted women. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Aging Well is helpful
The most useful information I found was the four areas listed for seniors to follow in later life. The recommendations were based on several comprehensive studies which followed people throughout their lifetimes.I did find it odd that in the beginning the author completely overlooked work done by Abraham Maslow many years ago, and instead insisted that he (the author) had been the first to study healthy people. This, however, was a small thing overall and didn't take away from the relevance of the information.

I have now read this book twice and I share the fact of the wisdom it contains with anyone who will listen. I believe it is an excellent guide on the path through life, the journey to success as a human being. Here you can learn how to laugh into maturity and leave a legacy in old age. But it's about more than those. You can also learn how others have successfully and unsuccessfully navigated the challenges of the twenties, the rapids of the thirties and the doldrums of the forties. And by their examples you can create your own path through to self knowledge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten Year Tounger: The Amazing Ten Week Plan to Look Better, Feel Better, and Turn Back the Clock
Dr. Masley does an excellent job outlining a workable and realistic health plan which includes receipes that are delicious.Be sure to try the leek souffle receipe. I appreciate his medical explanations and always enjoy another option in handling my diet and health. A must read for anyone who wants to increase their awareness and gain insight on how nutrition works!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read........
this book is chock full of information on the realities of dealing with alzheimer's disease and other memory impairment disorders.it is clearly written and uses examples of real-time situations to highlight situations that can arise and suggestions on how to deal with them.highly recommend it for care providers and others in the lives of those with memory impairment disorders.required reading for adult children to gain an appreciation for the pressures on the care provider(s) for a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 36 Hour Day
This is a really good book. I kept borrowing it from the library and kept getting fined for having it too long, so I thought I'd save myself time and trouble (and money, too) and buy it. I've come across alot of the same things that are mentioned in the book. This book is helpful to give the caregiver a different perspective on AD and it's nice to know that you're not alone in your struggles. It also reminds you that others have it worse than you do. I recommend this book for anyone who has elderly relatives, with the increased incidence of AD the chances are pretty good/bad that a relative will suffer from it. I think it's best to be prepared for the worst before it gets here. That way you'd have a start on what care would be required and how much you'll have to change your life to accomadate your aging relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Caregiver Should Read This Book
As the caregiver (daughter-in-law) of a 90 year old patient with dementia (vascular/multi-infact type), I found this book to be profoundly helpful in dealing with the day-to-day activities of caregiving. In short, I felt as if the authors had spent several weeks in our home and then written the book just for us!This is a MUST READ for any caregiver of a patient with Alzheimer's or other dementias. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible description of the mind's functioning
As I start this review, I want to say that I'm not a mental health professional. I'd been so used to psychological texts falling into 2 distinct categories: texts written by MD's explaining how everything wrong with you involves an excess of seratonin (or some other chemical) or books written by clinicians talking essentially only about their personal clinical experiences. This book breaks (or combines maybe..?) these stereotypes in a readable, detailed, and very well-supported (~500 references) account of how experiences actually create biological malfunctions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellect perspective...
This is a uniquely important book! Maybe those who so vividly expressed their disappointent in their reviews, misunderstood the title! The book is about DEVELOPING MIND, which means about how certain class of brain processes we call 'mind' come into being as the brain rewires itself.1-0 out of 5 stars Caution
This is a really bad book that it seem good.First of all, If you got some knowledge about neuroscience you won't enjoy at all, don't read this book!! ... You will have to read"what is a neuron?" and this sort of thing. The aim of the book is to integrate many branch of science (like attachment theory, neurobiology, developmental psychology, etc.) in order to explain the mind and it's development. But not so far than chapter two all become a disorder, it seem like Segal has read all about development and neuroscience and that he want to put it all together.. This book should be an absolute must for every married couple.midlife crisis will happen to all men to some degree, and women, you need to be prepared for it.Out of ten other books I have read on the subject, this one stands out way ahead of the others. This might end up in gifts for weddings of friends of mine!!

3-0 out of 5 stars you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone
At the outset I must declare that I am an over 50 year old male who has never had the slightest desire to own a Corvette, red or otherwise and who has been fortunate, thus far not to do any of the things normally considered to be aspects of a mid life crisis.

1-0 out of 5 stars 101 SECRETS FOR A GREAT RETIREMENT
SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DON'T BUY THIS ONE. IT'S A CORNY COLLECTION OF SENSELESS IDEAS. THE AUTHORS SPEAK APPROVINGLY OF A COUPLE WHO DROPPED THEIR MEDICAL INSURANCE AND SAVED THE MONEY INSTEAD. THEY MANAGED TO SAVE $45,000. THAT MIGHT NOT PAY FOR 1 DAY IN A HOSPITAL. IT WOULD BE INSANE TO DROP YOUR MEDICAL COVERAGE AND TRY TO SAVE ENOUGH ON YOUR OWN. THIS BOOK COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Wisdom
There is a great deal of wisdom in this book by Mary Helen and Shuford Smith. The Smiths cover the practical aspects of retirement as well. The Smiths retired early - ages 39 and 43. They consider their retirement lives extremely rich and provide this guide to fill in a gap that they see in retirement literature. They aren't afraid to tackle issues that many other retirement books don't address, such as the reality of death and sexual changes, while covering the practical aspects of retirement as well.
1-0 out of 5 stars common sense, not "secrets"
I bought this book thinking that the "secrets" therein would enlighten me as to things we might be missing in our planning for retirement. The other reviewers on this site made it sound like the book would have advice on little-known health care deals, finding a good place to live, etc.Instead, it is filled with common sense tips, such as "enjoy sex" and "learn to forgive."Gee, thanks. This might be a good book if you're retired and bored, but don't buy this looking for much more. ...
