5-0 out of 5 stars MidLife and The Great Unknown
I bought this to listen to as we traveled through Scotland.(Seems like an odd plan, but I wanted to do some reflection on my own mid-life.) I LOVED it! David uses poetry in such a meaningful manner, and he's an excellent story-teller. I've listened to this many times since that trip, and each time I REALLY listen. I have to say that I am a little better for the listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real gift
I am in awe of this CD. It has a beauty I have rarely encountered and I am thrilled with my purchase. My wife also shares my 'affair' with these CD's and we are the better for them. Neither of us have had much interest in poetry, yet David Whyte has such a way with words that we both feel very much converted!

5-0 out of 5 stars MidLife and the Great Unknown
My husband and I are both in midlife and we have both just reinvented our careers. In addition, I have read everything David Whyte has written because I find his work so powerful. This audio CD was a supreme delight. His voice and his reading of poetry is exquisite. The thoughtful information is relevant to any passage one is making in life.Furthermore, the poetry has the capacity to be transformative when one takes what Whyte has to say to heart and practice. I have shared with many people the wisdom I gained from listening to the CD.My husband was able to make a serious reconsideration of his work life after hearing the tape.I will listen to the tape again and again; every time I listen I hear and learn something else new and valuable. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Need livelier experiences
As a career consultant and former academic, I am a great admirer of Robert Weiss. I continue to recommend Learning From Strangers to students who want to learn qualitative research. And I am of an age when retirement can be a realistic option for the current or near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention Deficit Disorder
I found this book informative with very current, new ideas.I knew that ADD ran in our family but after reading this book, I realize that there are manifestations of it that I had never considered ADD.Now I realize that even more of us have this condition. We present with diverse symptoms, abilities and coping strategies but according to this book they are caused by the same types of brain problems. That makes very good sense to me.It explains a great deal. I am 63 years old and have known 6 generations of my family from my great grandfather to my grandchildren. There are some with ADD in each generation. What I used to think of as quirks I now realize are ADD traits. This book has allowed me to be gentler on myself and members of my family.I bought 4 copies of this book and am giving them to family members.I hope that they will find this information as helpful as I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Authoritative
The author of this wonderful book combines neuroscience and phychology to help dispel some the myths people have surrounding Attention Deficit Disorder. I could hardly put it down and often found myself lost within the pages for minutes on end. Much better than 'Driven to Distraction' IMO. Damn, what time was that meeting tomorrow? Oh yeah, I actually bought this for a family member who suffers from ADHD, so the doctor says. I'm thinking about buying a copy for everyone in my immediate family and probobly even a few distant cousins I haven't seen in years. Man, I wonder how old Doris is now anyway. Wasn't she the one that was adopted? No, now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that was Greg. Doris must have been the one with the irritable bowel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 10 STAR BOOK!
OUTSTANDING BOOK!I recommend this book to EVERYONE interested in the most current information on ADD and ADHD.Dr. Brown uses the term "ADD syndrome" to refer to a cluster of impairments in the management system of the mind. As a femaleadult with ADD and a high school resource specialist, I have experienced the effects of this syndrome both personally and professionally. As an educator who sees the actions of students with ADD frequently misunderstood by their teachers, I believe the information in this book will make a huge difference for students in the classrooms of the teachers who read it; Dr. Brown explains not only how these impairments affect behavior and time management, but more importantly, how they can affect reading, written expression, math, and memory. As a person with ADD, I especially liked his concept of ADD syndrome. Dr. Brown explains the complexity of this syndrome in an easy to read and easy to understand format. This book is for everyone who has been touched by someone with ADD: parents, friends, spouses, siblings, relatives, teachers, doctors, psychologists, and especially, any person who has ADD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Maked Sense
Midlife or any life transition is a very confusing time for some of us. This book is a must read for anyone going through change in their life. You have to buy the book because you won't want to give it back if you borrow it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Midlife is a time for growth
Awakening at midlife is an intelligent book. Instead of focusing strictly on physical changes, it touches on issues that affect us, both men and women in midlife, in a larger sense: the search for wholeness, losses and death, continuing growth strategies, and relationships. It then goes on to give us techniques for enriching our lives that include dreamwork, creativity, and spirituality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Survival Guide...
As the author of another "...midlife survival guide" ("The Midlife Bible. A Woman's Survival Guide", by Michael Goodman MD), Kathleen Brehoney's book provides a lovely resonant harmony which happens to fit well with the practical "lyrics" I provide in my book."Awakening at Midlife is a perfect companion.I give it 5 stars...

5-0 out of 5 stars A quick and worthwhile read!
As a Social Worker working with family caregivers of people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Stroke, I found this book especially interesting. I learned a great deal, especially as related to how Alzheimer's and strokes interact to produce a more acute presentation.I also admired Dr. Snowdon's ability to stay connected with his study's participants as individuals first vs. seeing them only as study subjects. Lastly, it was very interesting to learn more about religious orders, a world which has alwaysseemed shrouded in mystery. This book is all at once a research, sociological and narrative read.I'm looking forward to finding out what else Dr. Snowdon and his team discover from this remarkable longitudinal study!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Biography& The Science of Longevity Meet
Aging with Grace is an accessible and easy to read book packed with complex scientific and research data presented in understandable language. The author, David Snowdon, writes with a compassionate style that engages the reader draws them into the story of the Nun Study. This book is more than just a mere presentation of the results of the Nun Study and its impact on Alzheimer's research; it is biography and a truly human story. The lives of the sisters who participated in the study are made known to the reader and the reader becomes attached to them and the great legacy that they are leaving for humanity.Much can be learned on a human and spiritual level from the stories of the sister participants that goes beyond the scientific data and study results.Snowdon does and excellent job of weaving humanity with science resulting in the reader learning and engaging in science without becoming scientific.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for anyone at any age
Dr. Snowdon, who'd been conducting a multi-faceted study of a group of nuns for about 15 years at the time of the writing of this book (2001), presents a heart-warming account of his team's findings directed at the lay person.

2-0 out of 5 stars WORD GAMES
AGELESS BODY is Deepak's attempt to neutralize the word "old" as in old age.The writer has a knack for making common words, like "body, "mind" and "self," into profound concepts. His technique is to overlay his abstract ideas with suggestive experimental studies. But ambiguity in interpreting these studies abound.
3-0 out of 5 stars To Live To Eternity...
How would it feel to live forever; could you feel young when your body looks old.Your body is aging beyond your control because it has been programmed to live out the rules of collective conditioning. What you need is the body/mind connection.Beginning at age 30, the average human body starts to come unhinged: wrinkles appear, skin loses tone and freshness, muscles sag, fat catches up with muscle, eyesight and hearing taper off.As the bones thin and become brittle and break easily, stamina and endurance decline. You just can't do the things you are used to doing. To transform the patterns of the past, you must know what they are made of and how to stop the progress of deterioration. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that details Holistic approach to living longer

1-0 out of 5 stars His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect)

5-0 out of 5 stars No other book is as good
I think the biggest complaint or criticism of Dr. Perricone's recommendations is the excessive cost of supplements and creams. With regard to the supplements, Dr. Perricone gives recommendations on the vitamins and supplements you should take. I spent some time looking at all the ingredients listed and realized that you can get those same supplements, vitamins, and minerals at your local health food / vitamin store GNC carries a lot of them get DMAE here and so does Trader Joe's you can get the Complete EFA essential fatty acids, Alpha Lipoic Acid, but does not have DMAE, and Costco good price for CoEnzyme Q10! The prices are much more reasonable. In fact, on the nvperricone website, the vitamin packets list all the ingredients and the amount of product included in the packets. In his book, he makes dosage recommendations too. I hope this helps.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love this book
I became interested in Dr. Perricone theory once I saw him on PBS over a year ago. He was convincing enough to make me, old sceptic, get his book and follow his advice... I recommend The Perricone Promise to anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle and have younger looking skin. It is actually a continuation of the idea presented in his previous book Perricone Prescription.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mature Mind
As a retired Social Worker (81), and having about 25 years in the field of Gerontology, I was first intrigued by a review of the central thesisof this book, "The Myth of the Mid-Life Crisis," in the January 16,2006 issue of NEWSWEEK.The book met my expectations, so have given it as a gift to each of our 3 middle-age children. This book is well written, well organized, and has fulfilled its promise to expand our knowlege of adulthood(Eric Erickson.)I highly recommend it, especially for that cohort of people who are facing early lay-offs, and feeling very insecure about "what do I do now?"It may give many a new feeling of confidence about thier future.I've actually lived the experiences described in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Mature Brain: Where Wonder Never Ceases
This book is a historical marker in the rapidly growing field of cognitive development. Standing on the shoulders of Piaget and Erickson, and even Freud, Dr. Cohen creates four distinct yet integrated stages for the mature mind. Together they prove that the difference between adolescence and retirement (like heaven and hell) is about half an inch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I am 47 years old and saw Dr Cohen on the "The Today Show". I was so comforted to know that all the maladies that accompanying the aging brain don't have to be. We've been brainwashed by government controlled media. As long as we take the necessary nutrients FOR THE BRAIN and keep active we have not much to fear. My genuis- level mother died at age 77. First the dementia and then the Alzheimer's. She wasn't taking proper nutrients, drank well-water, was on antidepressants, loved toxic beef liver that stank when she cooked it and cooked with aluminum. She didn't know all this good information. I have severe short-term memory loss and looking forward to correcting it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Succeeds in coverage, fails in objectivity
I enjoyed the readings for most chapters in this text. The information is generally well-presented and nicely segmented for quick reading. 1-0 out of 5 stars Vision for the Future
This book outlines ways in which current society neglects and relegates elders so that they become invisible at a time when they have something special to offer the larger culture. The author challenges the reader to think creatively about how care for elders can be provided in a more dignified way. I highly recommend this provocative book for anyone interested in changing the way society views aging, abilities and wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book.
This book was recommended to me by the local County Commissioner of Senior Services. As a nurse and caregiver for my mother, I had not been exposed to some of the ideas that Dr. Thomas discusses. The book has taught me to look at aging from many different perspectives. One thought that is discussed is how we are an anti-aging society as evidenced by the fact that we are not running down to the drug store to buy wrinkle cream!

5-0 out of 5 stars A how to "Talking to Alzheimer"guide
I first saw this book in the waiting room of a Dr. my mother was meeting with.I didn't have too much time to get into it then so I purchased it later and what a tremendous book, so easy to read and it had situations I am currenlty dealing with and the appropriate responses.I took it to my support group for caregivers and shared it with the group, some were going to purchase the next day. My thanks toClaudia Strauss for writing it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
Dementia a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of this disease is told in my own recently published book. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. TALKING TO ALZHEIMER'S will help all such caregivers to cope.
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference for Alzheimer's caregivers/family members
I am in my second read of this little book and it is full of helpful ideas about THE VISIT to Alzheimer patients (or anyone with impaired memory.) The author says early on that it is NOT a book to be READ through but rather a book to REFER to when a certain situation arises. I am very glad I bought it so I can have it with me as long as I have my mother with me... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Parents, Health Care Professionals, and Direct Support Proviers!
There are none better than Brian Chicoine, MD and Dennis McGuire, Ph.D to write a comprehensive book regarding adults with Down syndrome. The information in this book is founded by research of literature, discussions with experts from around the world, and from hands-on care for over 3000 unique adults with Down syndrome from across the country. The authors are the life-blood of the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Dempster, IL - a one-of-a-kind clinic - and are two people who are doing this work for all the right reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Parents and Professionals
I am the mother of a 34 year old daughter with Down syndrome, and this is one of the best books on DS that I have ever seen.It is well written in understandable language and offers practical suggestions and steps to take. The authors of this book have worked with thousands of adults with Down syndrome at the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Illinois, and they really know their stuff. The book touches on all aspects of life for adolescents and adults with DS.There is a lot on what factors influence well-being and how physical problems can affect behavior. It addresses when things are "normal" and when to worry. The book is well organized, so you can go to the sections that apply to your situation. And if the person in your life with DS doesn't have any behavioral issues now, this book can help you keep it that way.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I needed this
I did not lose my mother from death but from a custody battle and have not seen her since I was 4 years old.Recently I gave birth to my own daughter and from the day I found out I was pregnant with her I could not believe how much grief, hurt, and confusion that went through me.It was almost as if all of those childhood pains from losing my mother surfaced the day my daughter was born.I felt cluless. I raised a son just fine but once I had my daughter I questioned so many things and longed for that motherly affection I so long ago lost. This book was a GOD SEND to me because I felt like I was the only one to feel this way.It helped me to understand these feelings of confusion were normal. Thank you for this book Hope!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many variables to hold being motherless as the sole responsible factor....
Being motherless affects so much of who I am; I realized this through Edelman's previous book, "Motherless Daughters". I laughed and cried my way through the pages of that book, so I was intrigued by the publication of "Motherless Mothers".
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Hope Edelman
Any mother that is trying to navigate the world of parenting without her own mother there to guide her needs to read this book!! I love Edelman's writing style - plain, frank and to the point. Many times reading this book I felt like she was talking right to me....she has captured the profound loss all of us motherless mothers feel. She has a nice balance of writing about her own loss and feelings, along with the experiences of other motherless mothers around the country, with just enough research and statistics thrown in to not be boring. This is a compelling, sometimes heart-wrenching read, but any motherless mother will take comfort while reading this book in knowing that they are not alone. Thank you, Hope, for writing this book for us!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Light-weight life saver -perfect bath reading
I gave this to my major fox babe, SaraJ, for *her* 30th along with the Fruit Bats' "Mouthfuls" CD.4-0 out of 5 stars entertaining and poignant - 30 does not = expiration date!
What this book isn't:1) something you would take seriously.2) something to consult if you are a selfhelp fan.3) something you won't get if you never moved out of your parents' house.1-0 out of 5 stars Funny but unreal
I understand that it is a book of humor. But first, this book assumes that the mayority of women turning 30 is single. Second, it also assumes that if you have a stablished career and a confortable financial position achieved by hard work before turning 30, something's wrong with you. Read more

Editorial Review

Touted as the fountain of youth in pill form, DHEA, or dehydroepiandrosterone, is a hormone naturally produced by the body. The young body, that is; by age 85, you produce 95 percent less DHEA than at age 25. Stephen Cherniske, a biochemist who has tracked the research on DHEA for years, has compiled a handy reference to help sort out the hype from this hormone's reported helpfulness for boosting libido and immune function, improving bone density, aiding weight loss, relieving depression and atherosclerosis, and even reducing the size of tumors. 1-0 out of 5 stars He is a fraud
He is NOT a doctor. The only degree he has is from a unaccredited CORRESPONDENCE school!!! It was shut down by court order in 2001. He paid $72 for his "degree". He is now involved in Oasis Life Sciences, a MLM selling junk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Androgel
DHEA is the only drug that has made my testicles bigger.I suffer from HYPOGONADISM.Taking testosterone only made them smaller.
