You don't need a degree to be an expert
This review is specifically in response to the comments of some reviewers who express contempt for Ms. Somer's proclaiming to have knowledge about the human body.
At Least She's Trying
Suzanne has done the research, and I have already commented on this book, but because I mentioned other books, Amazon took it out.My friend Elsa commented also, and mentioned a better book-also removed.Hmm...But it's okay for "authors" to say they are authors and promote their books here.Anyway, I believe Somers has done the right thing in doing the research, the wrong thing in passing it off as "holistic".At least she is TRYING to understand her body instead of giving up control to a practicing person with initials after his name.

How dare she
Suzanne Somers has crossed the line - from a sensible advocate of bioidentical hormones to an out-of-control MD-wannabe. Although she has interviewed numerous doctors for this book, she seems to have "drunk the Kool-Aid" when it comes to the crazy protocols recommended by her friend T.S. Wiley, who has zero medical credentials. Before any women buy into the Wiley Protocols outlined in this book, they should do some internet research and read about the women who have tried it and now bitterly regret it. Erika Schwartz MD was quoted in this week's New York Times as saying this book is "dangerous." She's dead right. ... Read more

Efron Is Real
As a university professor originally from New York City and definitely past the "baby Boomer" stage, I still found time to read Nora's essays and thoroughly enjoyed them."Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," are not "Hilarious" as so many people expect, but rather poignant portrayals of real-life human dilemmas presented in a lighter voice.Nora has been the one who can capture the rare moment within the chaos of reality, and her essays in the "neck" book do just that. This was obviously not meant to be the "book of the year," but a snapshot of the woman behind the captivating novels and films.The essays allow us to see that, she too, is aging with the rest of us, and it comes on all so quickly.I plan on gifting this book for the holidays, along with Gangi's "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," and "Crazy Salad."The combination will help to get many minds and bodies on a better track.

A disappointment
I ran to get a copy of Nora Ephron's newest book, as I always liked her work. I'm glad I didn't spend the money, and instead got it from the library. I expected a very funny book that would be filled with wisdom and wit. Instead I found a slightly funny book that lacked originality and really had nothing to say. It would be too harsh to call it self-indulgent, but in a way it was. So she had a rent-controlled apartment that she loved, so parenting has changed,and so she has to dye her hair (often). Yawn yawn.
Women (and men) Will Love This Book

You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
Don't dismiss this book because a Hollywood celebrity wrote it.
As it says in the forward, yes, the medical community should catch up with Suzanne Somers. Hormones are a complex subject, and the author Suzanne is wise in the way this book is written and how the content is presented. She asks the questions (what we all want to know but were afraid to ask), and gives you her opinion. But the book is in a question and answer format where the professionals are giving their answers. You may not want to do it Suzanne's way, but she's asked the right questions, and used her celebrity to bring attention to a very important topic - one that professionals and patients should be more aware of, and that major pharmaceutical companies wish you weren't.

The Sexy Years:Discover the Hormone Connection
This is a great first book to read before entering in to perimenopause is possible. Easy to understand and helps soften the blow many women feel when told those dredded words "Your going into menopause" I tried other things on the market prempro made me swell up 60 lbs in two month. I was told I no longer needed a period..(don't let a doctor tell you that)it just speeds up the ride to menopause. I am becomming very knowledgeable about bioidentical hormones and shame on Ob/Gyn who don't know about them.after all they have been around the medical world since the 40s!! Drug companiest hate them becasue you can't patent them and they must be mixed in a special pharmacy called a compounding pharmacyI find myself educating Dr.s who don't seem very interested.. It is not easy to find the right combonation of homrones but when you do it's jackpot! You will feel great. You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. Same info as before
There isn't anything new here unless you want to fall asleep reading about cheese and whisky.Dr. Weil gives examples of how some cheese's and whisky get better as they age as if this is supposed to correlate to people.I love Dr. Weil's other books and his website but I was disappointed by this book.If you want to read a good anti-aging book read Roy Walford's 120 year Diet.An excellent read.

Don't Bother
Don't EVEN bother buying this book.If you can avoid the snores with all the medical mumbo-jumbo, maybe this book is for you.Bottom line is: don't fret about aging because it's going to happen to you and eat right, exercise and take your vitamins.So what else is new?

really irritating
I found this book annoying, boring, and wordy. It contains very little actual information about aging, exercise, or anything else, and the information that it does contain is nothing that most people don't already know anyway. Basically, it is one big motivational speech that promotes exercising for women, but the male author is patronizing, condascending, and sexist. He spends a lot of time convincing the reader that exercise is actually good for women and that it's OK for women to lift weights. He seems to assume that most women are reluctant to exercise and ignorant about exercise. For example, he says that women should join a gym instead of exercising on their own so that they don't hurt themselves and are sure to stick with the program. As a woman who has exercised consistently on my own for over 20 years (including a marathon and a triathlon) I found it insulting to say the least.

Younger Next Year for Women
You could still tell a man wrote this book, however, it was excellent.Sure got my attention.I started implementing his suggestions right away.Actually, the book re-enforced what my doctor had been telling me, but hearing it from a book really made an impact.Guess I'm a slow learner.

Nothing New, but.......
There isn't anything we don't already know we should doing in this book.And having said that, I do heartily recommend it.I love the chatty informality of the authors.The easy going style gets your attention and keeps it. Its like talking with old friends you haven't seen in a while. And that is one of the points in the book.You SHOULD keep in touch with old friends AND make new ones.So...after you've read this book, get off the couch and get going! It's never too late to start taking care of yourself!

TOO WORDY, NEEDS to be MORE CONCISE
this book has good information but not much of an attention getter at all, needs to be straight to the point and have pics orcharts that will be detailed but grabs you attention! It is an okay book over all but not so great when comes to actually studying for an exam...

LIfe -Span Development
The book is easy to read.The author does not assume that you have prior knowledge about development stages and theories that accompany the stages.The author also adds real life examples of how these stages may look in life in many different cultures. The chapters build on each other.The author does a great job of reveiwing key concepts from previous chapters as they relate to the current chapter.

MUST READ
Wow! I've spend the last year reading about disease prevention and nutrition and this book summarizes all that I've read in dozens of books, articles and websites about beating cancer, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc. I wish I would have started here. It also provides a new look at the longest live peoples on the planet which I believe is previously unpublished information. I'm going to be giving this book as a gift to everyone on my Christmas list -- it's one of those books you don't want to miss. This book would be especially good for those skeptics out there -- it contains lots of scientific data and solid evidence. And, to the reviewer who wondered about the author's age -- i believe it is 67. I recently saw a full body picture -- he's in amazing shape.

Such a loving and wonderful book.

A brilliant treatise on how the mind develops by a credible author with good writing skills
The essence of this book is captured in its very first paragraph, "the mind emerges at the interface of interpersonal experience and the structure and function of the brain." It goes on to explain how this is so in the various chapters that cover memory, emotion, construction of reality (via internal representations), states of mind, self regulation, interpersonal connection and integration.

Eye Opener!
This book has open my eyes to the possiblities of improve not only my health but my looks as well. Detail of information on how you can truly fight the ageing process.
What About Mental Fitness?
Whenever I read books like this, it makes me think again that doctor's just don't get it - they ignore the "big picture" of their patient's health and focus on treating symptoms with just Western medicine. That's their business, of course. It's up to consumers to get educated, on that I agree. We can do a lot by keeping physically fit, but what about mental fitness? Whoever talks about that? We are an aging population and more needs to be done to prevent memory loss, etc. Rather than obsolete books, I find services like Agogus.com much more "up" on the holistic perspective.

book for everyone
We get more aware of our age at the time of retirement. Switching from a daily-work routine to a totally new idea of all-time-holidays is often not as pleasurable as we expected thirty or more years before. At that difficult time, it is very helpful to focus on the Four Pillars of Longevity as suggested by the authors of the book. The book provides some good medical background for these readers that like to understand why certain things are happening. Search the net for more FREE info

I'd give it zero stars if I could
I understand that the typical Psychology Book is not exactly a riveting novel, but good god, this was way too much.I have never been more annoyed with a text book- I would never voluntarily have read this garbage!She would have had a much shorter book if we weren't forcefed her life story at every possible chance she could insert it in.This woman is very full of herself...very full.There were a lot of typos, a lot of redundent sentences, and a lot of crap we didn't need!I hope for the rest of the psychology students of the world that this author reads these reviews and vows never to write another text book again.If I ever have a class that requires another text book by her, I will drop without hesitation!And change majors the next morning!

HORRABLE
In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it.

Increasing understanding of Aging
Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. Informative Read !!!

Required Reading
Many of you who are considering buying this text are probably doing so for either a regular college course or for one of the Regents College/Excelsior College exams.I decided to earn a second bachelors degree and am working through Excelsior College. This is the required text for one of their exams.I can say that the book is thorough and covers the material that you need to know to pass the test, completely.Like many psyhcology and sociology texts, the subject matter can be dry, but the author seems to do a better than average job of dealing with this.
