1-0 out of 5 stars A WASTE OF MONEY
This book is so general and sprawling it is useless. I went to the section on Presbyopia (Middle-Aged Eyes. It describes the condition (this I already know), says conventional medicine has no remedy other than glasses, says that "vision therapy has shown that people who perform simple focuing exercises experience a great benefit." But does he tell us what those exercises are? There is a general section on exercises. Are those the ones? Grossman's other book "Natural Eye Care: An Encyclopedia" is no better. Presbyopia does not even appear in the index! In "Greater Vision" Grossman takes up a lot of pages describing various Complementary Therapies, with a paragraph each on practices such as craniosacral therapy, the Alexander technique, yoga, meditation, etc. Okay, but I already know about these therapies, in fact have, at one time or another, partaken of all of the above. What I really need to know is which one is right for my condition? Grossman doesn't say. If you really want to improve your vision and read an altogether fascinating book (although with a terrible title), try Jacob Liberman's "Take Off Your Glasses and See." It is usefully informative, well-written, and full of some amazing insights about our culture and how our way of life contributes to vision problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the E on the Chart
Dr. Grossman points out the vitality of vision in ways that no other eye doctor does. He brings together a Western approach to optometry along with Chinese medicine and psychology in this book. Easy to read, it proved to be an integral tool in helping me to better understand the relationship between eyesight and vision. Most importantly it gave me practical guidelines for looking at myself, others and the world around me in new ways. This book has 50 exercises for the eyes, the soul and the heart that will take you to ever-unfolding levels of seeing. Highly recommended for those of us who wish to see more clearly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and invaluable resource.
As well as being practicing optometrists, Dr. Marc Grossman and Dr. Glen Swartwout have been trained in Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and naturopathic medicine. Both have also published previous books. Theirjoint effort, Natural Eye Care, An Encyclopedia: Complementary TreatmentsFor Improving And Saving Your Eyes, draws from the best of traditional andmodern medicine for the prevention and treatment of eye disorders.Theauthors say that their "primary goal is to offer a practical approachto vision care based on an underlying philosophy that emphasizes preventionrather than cure." They begin with a fascinating discussion of howthe eye functions, including information like "the entire blood volumeof the body passes through the eyes every 40 minutes or so."Althoughmany of us don't realize it, our eyes are the first to suffer when we feelphysical or mental stress. They also cite studies showing that allergiesin children improve when their vision is enhanced through vision therapy. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Swartwout devote one chapter to a explanation ofthe various natural treatments and how they are used for treating visiondisorders. They emphasize the "vision diet," which focuses oneating lots of fresh foods and eliminating processed or refined foods. They also discuss the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),acupressure, herbs, physical exercise, eye exercises, spinal adjustments, and homeopathy in preventing and treating eye diseases. Each of thefollowing eye diseases have their own chapter:glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, dry eyes, sties, floaters, and conjunctivitis (pinkeye). The authors provide a description of the causes and symptoms of eachdisease, and a summary of conventional treatment. They then describe ahealing program for those who have each vision disorder, based on naturaltreatments. Each chapter ends with a prevention program for those whostill have healthy eyes.An appendix provides acupressure directions. They also include an extensive reference section, and listing for resourcesfor those who can't obtain natural products locally.Dr. Grossman andDr. Swartwout say that "the good news is that we don't have to bepassive victims of eye disease.Eye deterioration can often bestopped--and even reversed."Readers will findNatural Eye Care, AnEncyclopediaa comprehensive and invaluable resource for the preventionand treatment ofvision disorders.Read more

Imagine yourself walking through a field of tall grass with one eye shut. Right ahead of you is a striped animal, a zebra say, that is invisible, perfectly blended with the grassy background. Now open both eyes. Suddenly, the zebra appears before you, its contours revealed in depth. Information about the zebra's shape was not present in the patterns of light that went into each of your eyes but the information is there in the difference between the patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Market regarding Macular Degeneration.
Here's a book with real substance written by a doctor who has M.D.There are too many books on the marketthat appear to be written by doctors who are looking over someones shoulderin an attempt to write authoritively onthe subject. I was very impressed by the dept of knowledge of this doctor who writes with true in depth investigative knowledge, he truly understands because he has the problem.A lot of good advice regarding diet which is of major importance, and life style, (Smoking), etc.Careful reading will show at least how to stop the progression and he also tells what kind of research is being done to find , if not a cure, at leastpossible major help.I'll buy anything this guy writes !

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book yet!
This book on macular degeneration is by far the best one published to date. There are numerous other publications available by other doctors that don't come close to the quality and depth of information contained in thisbook. I even gave a copy to my eye doctor who was not aware of it'savailability.I must add that this doctor really speaks from personalexperience with Macular Degeneration and it shows in the quality andquantity of great information.I thank God for this mans bookand highlyrecommend it to anyone who has MD or a friend or relative with theproblem.Sincere thanks,Lee CarlsonSpring Hill, Fl

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the Doctor's review fool you, it works
If you're looking for a book with eye EXERCISES that was written by someone with curiosity who EXPERIMENTED and STUDIED at the same time to improve their vision, with advice that may help you, you've found it. I used to be in eye therapy at the Alderwood Vision Clinic in WA, I know these exercises work and I know that without daily exercises... your vision will tend towards what you mainly look at. I was nearsighted, then eventually didn't need glasses thanks to the vision therapy, then I played video games for 3 years as well as computer games and gradually got worse. 3-0 out of 5 stars a physical approach
The author presents vision improvement in a way that likens relaxed use of the eyes to other forms of fitness that keep the body, or various aspects of it, working smoothly and efficiently. The material isn't strictly the Bates Method, but it's basically in line with it, with some things added that some Bates teachers may not agree with. The book goes over why glasses are not the solution, then it gets into specific exercises that are to help refractive errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your eyes are important;it pays to keep them in shape!
Despite all the emphasis today on healthy lifestyles and physical fitness, I can't recall seeing any other recent book that has advocated applying those same principles to a person's eyes.As Ms. Roy points out in"Eyerobics", the eyes contain muscles that need a good workout, too, in order to stay strong and limber. Many years ago, as a teenager, Istruggled with the fact that I was nearsighted and had no choice but towear the heavy "nerdy-looking" glasses that were available backin the 50's. I was intrigued when I found a paperback book that describeda variety of exercises that one could perform in order to improve vision. The book seemed to be based on sound principles, but unfortunately, ittreated eye exercises as if they were the "calisthentics" thatwere so popular in those days:something boring and uncomfortable that was"good for you".The book sat on a shelf for years, filled withgood ideas that never became a reality. I eventually learned of thenewly-available contact lens, and was able to take advantage of thiswonderful development to shed my glasses for a while. However, at somepoint the discomfort of contact with smoke and dust overcame my vanity, andI decided that a pair of lightweight, wire-rim glasses was really not sobad. Now, as I approach the big "50", I have found that I have anew challenge, one that we all face eventually: the tendency to havedifficulty with close work when wearing my regular glasses.I have triedusing the latest version of "bi-focals", and I find a lot ofdisadvantages.I believe that with a little work, I can improve my closevision so that the single-vision lenses will be sufficient. I may decide atsome point to undergo laser vision correction for cosmetic reasons, but Iknow that the close-vision issue will remain unless I develop healthy, flexible eye muscles. I have found "Eyerobics" to be a sourceof inspiration and a kind of "owner's manual for the eyes". Theexercises are designed to fit into today's busy schedules, and seem to bemore like an interesting little games than like "calisthentics". Marilyn Roy has brought some important eye-care issues to the attention ofthe general public in a readable, down-to-earth book.Perhaps it should bemade into a "Dummies" book, because it deserves to be just aspopular. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars VERY BASIC LOOK AT BUDDHIST TEACHING OF KARMA
Mr. Mack has written a short, very funny look at karma-lite and it should not take you more than a few hours to get through this book. Although entertaining, I wish the book had more substance to it. Mr. Mack presents the Buddhist teaching of karma and gives pretty short shrift to the Hindu perception, even though, in my own opinion, the Hindu view makes more sense when it comes to explaining the world and why things happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars for my mother
Great book!I am a general ophthalmologist and read this book and found it very helpful in my understanding of the various treatments and vitamin therapies for macular degeneration.I then gave a copy to my mother who has severe macular degeneration. She loved the book and found it very useful reading it before her last retina evaluation.I applaud Dr Folk and Wilkinson for their work on this great and hopeful guide for patients with this frustrating disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information, easy to read
The authors of this book are very knowledgeable on the subject but they have managed to write a book that is not over my head.It has some important information for all ages on how to prolong the life of your eyes.I would recommend this book, not only for those who are already at risk for age related vision loss, but for parents who want to teach thier children good habits now so they will be able to see as clearly, and for as long, as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for people who fear going blind from AMD
This book is written for the person who is afraid he or she might have age-related macular degeneration (AMD), for people who already have AMD, and for family and friends of AMD patients. The authors are an ophthalmologist and an optometrist, giving the book points of reference from two similar but distinct disciplines. Dr. Folk covers the mechanisms of AMD and medical treatment while Dr. Wilkinson covers topics about making the best of the vision you have.

Visual Ergonomics Handbook by Jeffrey Anshel (CRC Press) If you are reading this book clearly and comfortably, then congratulations - your eyes are probably working well. Yet it's also most likely that you spend several hours per day staring at a computer screen (maybe even while reading this book). Viewing an electronic display screen varies significantly from reading text on paper and our eyes most often suffer for it. We need to address this problem and find out what can be done to make our computer viewing time more comfortable, as well as more productive.
