5-0 out of 5 stars Stirring Art
Etta Clark scores with Growing Old is Not For Sissies II.Her book is filled with beautiful photography and a second look at some of the subjects from her first book. With frank honesty, she captures the essence of her subjects once again. An excellent book of art for any fan of photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Anyone Working in Gerontology
This book is a must for anyone who works with older adults. It is a photographic essay of some very special people....people who embrace the robustness of life, and who are disciplined to maintain their capabilities as long as possible. Our world is steeped in ageism, that is, believing that older people are only capable of doing things that are "appropriate" for their age. This book shatters those beliefs and provides living examples of people who continue doing what they love to do physically.I wish that Etta Clark would revise this book with a new set of photos every year!I have seen some of these photos over and over again in lectures that people give about aging. It is a book to be owned, not borrowed.

5-0 out of 5 stars So inspiring, I think I'll run a marathon!
Just one look at the photos and all your excuses for being a couch potatogo out the door. This book is filled with inspirational photos of seniorathletes.Helen Zechmeister, age 91, works out 3 days a week, deadlifts200 pounds and can do the full splits.A competitive swimmer, MarieWilcox-Little at 73 has a much better figure than I could ever hope to have(I'm merely 30).My favorite: Ivor Welch,(Volume 1)was never active until83 when his wife his wife passed away.To mourn her death he startedwalking, then running, then running marathons.By the age of 90 he ranfive marathons and 2 half marathons! If Ivor can do it, by golly, so canI!A must have for anyone who wants to enjoy life to its fullest! ... Editorial Review

Golf may be a sport you can enjoy from youth through AARP membership, but a 50-year-old man can't play the game the same way he did at 25. With a loss of flexibility comes a loss of power, and unless you adjust your swing, you'll lose accuracy, too. In response to the limitations that age brings, the authors of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well explained good information
This book dispells the myths re age and exercise. After reading the facts I also feel encouraged to train more and in the correct way.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the hard core cyclist
As a not-especially-athletic 50-something who rides to get in shape and lose a few pounds, I found the book a bit of a shock.Aimed at aging jocks, its main focus seems to be training for racing, centuries, and even LONGER rides! But once the shock wore off, I found a lot to help even me: ride often (3-4 times a week), vary the training regimen, and most of all -- learn how to use your heart rate meter. The book provides practical recipes for figuring out your "lactate threshold" (LT) heart rate (about 10% less than what my HRM calls my "maximum" heart rate) -- and then how to base your training program on time spent in various "zones" defined by percent of LT heart rate. It's helping!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
I can honestly say i'm very disappointed with this book.I expected to actually learn more about about poses (especially for the elderly)As a yoga instructor myself i found this book to be horrible i would never recommend it for a beginner.Yes, the poses are for beginners but what the book fails to do is explain these poses, and what prep poses to do.Not once did the book mention the four points of contact on the foot to help with balance it fails to remind the reader to make sure there archs are not collapsing, it lacks tellin readers about the common mistakes that are done in certain poses.I would not recommend it if you are a beginner or a yoga instructor, searchin for modiifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep the Yoga Fire Burning After 50!
This modest looking book by Richard Rosen, a master yogi over 50, offers lots of practical tips for older beginners and their teachers. I especially recommend this book to younger yogis who are looking for ways to teach yoga safely to their parents and grandparents. Add this book to your yoga library to keep the yoga fire stoked over the long haul!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, safe, imaginative, fun exercise for people over 50
Bonnie Prudden calls people over 50 "the last fit Americans."By this she means that older people built their bodies to be strong and functional, by playing outdoors as children, walking to school, etc.Evenif their fitness has declined, it can be regained. Ms. Prudden debunksmyths about older people ("you can't teach an old dog newtricks," "all old people end up in nursing homes," etc.) andpresents a clear, simple fitness test to use in taking stock of one's lifeand current fitness level. She presents her time-tested exercise program, relating exercises to specific problems such as "gardener'sback," "stairs - going up and coming down," etc.Along withthe exercises, Ms. Prudden discusses Myotherapy, the pain relief method shedeveloped, and gives corrective exercises for many pain problems (migraine, sciatica, whiplash, etc.)as well as "immediate mobilization"techniques to use after an acute injury.Interspersed with more exercisesare descriptions of pain problems related to various occupations andsports. For those who are chair-bound or unsteady on their feet, exercisesthat can be done in a chair are presented. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helping us (we're both in our 80s) prevent falling accidents.
I've added exercises from this book to my standard morning exercise routine. I suspect it will help with our balance but it certainly has already made us more cognizant of the need to keep in better physical shape. It is clearly written and the illustrations make it easy to copy the routines.

Editorial Review

First, the bad news for over-30 jocks: your body is more susceptible to physical breakdowns caused by exercise and athletic competition. It is weaker, fatter, less flexible, and may be showing signs of arthritis and brittle bones. So it reacts differently to injury, taking longer to heal and making reinjury more likely. Gee, thanks. The good news is that Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected in the least
As an athletic trainer, I purchased the book for another source in dealing with my athletes and their injuries.I am always looking for summaries of injuries that I might present to them that will put them at ease and help them understand the treatment protocols.I found that too much information was outdated in the book, which kinda goes along with the people who it is meant for.The book did mention plenty of common injuries, however, I would not tell my friends or family some of the treatments given in the book. Most being behind the times, and speaking of behind the times, some of the Locker Room Lingo used is ways outdated, get with the times.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Return to Glory Days:My stocking stuffer solution
I heard Morton Dean interviewed on the radio about Return to Glory Days and was intrigued that he suffered more slings and arrows running, playing softball and tennis than he did covering the world's hot spots.Skimming through Return to Glory Days while in line to purchase it, I, for the first time, did holiday shopping before Christmas eve and bought 8 copies of Return to Glory Days for active friends and family members. The book reads like Mr. Dean's newscasts--straight-forward, easy to understand and just the facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Return to Glory Days is the bible for injury prevention!
I picked up Mr.Dean's book after seeing him on a local talk show. What a fabulous idea--providing a treatment/reference book for common sports injuries for those of us that still think are bodies can do what they did when we were 18. It's very well organized and user-friendly.Thank you, Mr. Dean.I can guarantee these pages will be worn and tattered from use.And now I have the best "get well" gift for my friends that over-do that weekend workout and want a quick recovery. ...
