5-0 out of 5 stars Best guide I've found
This book is an excellent resource.I am dealing with a parent who is declining rapidly. She is still independent - but barely. This book provided detailed information on what to expect, and not just in terms of the parent herself. This book dealt with how relationships with partners, children, siblings, and siblings' spouses impact care of an elderly parent. Many books point out that these relationships are changed by an elderlly parent who needs care, but this book provided tips and techniques for dealing with a wide variety of reactions. The book also dealt with the way in which childhood relationships with the parent can impact caregiving, and it provided strategies for dealing with the repercussions of a variety of positive and negatigve childhood experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful journey of life
I read this beautiful book cover-to-cover in one sitting as I just could not put it down. I think the description might be a bit misleading as it makes the book sound like a sad lament of loss, when in fact it is a joyous celebration of life. "Phantom Limb"also puts life into perspective, and will hopefully alter yours--as it has mine.5-0 out of 5 stars A poet's understanding of loss
What a brilliant, heartbreaking, wise book. The central metaphor is haunting and unforgettable. Janet Sternburg, in her heart of hearts, is a true poet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phantom Limb is a wonder
This story is mesmerizing and painfully real to anybody who has lost a parent to illness. It's beautifully told, without being overtly sentimental. Sternberg skillfully lets us enter her world as a daughter, a caregiver and a woman who is also dealing with the baggage of her own illness. You are with her every step of the way. It is rich in its telling and goes straight to the heart. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Family Caregivers
When my grandmother started showing signs of Alzheimer's in 1989, when information on Alzheimer's was still very limited, Sharon Fish's book was a godsend. She clearly outlines what to expect as the disease progresses through its various stages and how to deal with it, all written with compassion and from her own real-life experiences with families trying to cope with and understand the realities of Alzheimer's.At the time, I bought several copies and passed them around for all of my family to read, and have loaned my own copy countless times over the past decade to friends facing the difficulty of dealing with a loved one's dementia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical advice for Caregivers
The author offers practical and complete advice for the caregivers of Alzheimer's patients, writing from both personal and professional experience, she discusses the baffling behaviours, the safety aspects of care-giving , and the fears, anxieties and the guilt involved. She examines continuing care issues such as making the difficult decision of when to institutionalize and how to care for the dying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has everything you need to know!
Caregiving is a hot topic in books and magazines these days, but usually only a couple of aspects of caregiving are addressed. This book covers everything: what to do day-to-day; how to care for yourself, too; how to deal with simple health issues; and how to find support outside your home. The presentation is so accessible--charts, lists, illustrations--so you can go right to the information you need on any given day. It's full of other people's stories, which made me feel like we all go through a lot of the same things. It helps you do what you need to do and at the same time recognize when you're taking on too much, and what to do then. The book also discusses more medical topics (incontinence, falling, foot care, medicines) in a way that's easy to read and makes problems less intimidating. It Takes More than Love will help both the caregiver and the care recipient live better lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I checked this book out from my local library and found it to be such a wonderful resource that I'd like to purchase a copy to keep and read over.It contained very practical information, was easy reading (didn't talk in technical language) and will help me with coping in the stressful job of being a caregiver for my aging parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical advice that is easy to use
I've been taking care of my mom for about 2 years now.A friend recommended that I read It Takes More Than Love.It is filled with very practical, hands-on advice.I've already put lots of their suggestions to use. What I especially like is that it is written in a very easy to read style that is not full of jargon.Reading many parts made me think they must know exactly what I am experiencing.I'd recommend it to anyone who is caring for a family member. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As she slips away...
Not even a "man of God" can watch his very much loved mother (who was once very much in charge of her life) slip off into this very cruel disease without a sense of loss and heartache, but Houston was able to see the benefit of sharing his mother's life at this time, as well. There's a lot of love and compassion here, along with the frustration and sadness. This book should be on the shelf of every adult child who finds himself in this "role-reversal" situation with an aged parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest and Thoughtful Journal of Caring for a Parent
The book touched me with its honest and thoughtful reflection of thejoyful challenges of caring for an aged parent slipping into anotherreality. Houston shares his frustrations, his coping or lack of it, and hissmall victories in a honest yet upbeat and faithful way. Anyone coping withtaking care of an aged parent who is slipping away slowly will find anencouraging friend in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heartwarming trip home
I've known the author through many of the years covered in the book.Reading his journal of those experience gave me the feeling of returning home again, seeing familiar landmarks and sharing joint memories. That feeling reverberates as I watch my parents go through many of the same experiences witht their parents.Circle of Years should find a similar home of warmth in the hearts of other readers facing the aging of their parents or grandparents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Sensitive, and Practical Advice
I agree with others who assert that all great societies take excellent care of their children and their elderly. I also believe, however, that family members should assume primary responsibility for such care rather than abdicating it to institutions and agencies in the public sector. For various reasons, people are living longer now than ever before. When resources and circumstances permit, elderly loved ones continue to live in their own homes or in dedicated facilities which offer assisted-living services. Based on my own experience and the collective experiences of countless friends, I realize that few of us are adequately prepared to address the issues which West-Rodriguez and Dennis discuss in this book. Some involve logistics. Others involve healthcare. For me, the most complicated issues are those relevant to an elderly loved one's pride, self-esteem, and concerns about quality of life. (Those who taken away an elderly loved one's car keys and/or check book know exactly what I am talking about.) In this volume, West-Rodriguez and Dennis offer expert counsel as well as a step-by-step "game plan" which both anticipates and prepares for all manner of situations in which family members and caregivers can become involved. 5-0 out of 5 stars A useful, practical & comprehensive tool
This book is deceptively simple, accessible and full of practical knowledge.I can imagine that the hardest part of putting it all together was the "deceptively simple" part. . . .reducing it all to easily accessible information and guidance. The authors have tackled a deeply affecting topic and will - I sincerely hope - get more people to think about theselife/death matters that inevitably face most of us.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource!
As a financial consultant, I am faced with an increasing demand from clients to assist them, or their aging parents, with long-term care planning. When you deal with the emotional issues of admitting a loved oneto a nursing home, where do you start your research? Right here! Wouldn'tit be nice to know, ahead of time, if a home has ever been cited for anyviolations? Wouldn't you like to know what those violations were andwhether or not they had been addressed and rectified? This guide providesyou with much of that information. Furthermore, the crash course onlong-term care planning, at the beginning of the book, is excellent.Thisguide proves to be particularly valuable for the children of aging parentswho are geographically distanced from their parents and they don't have afirst-hand knowledge of their parents' city or the homes within that area.An absolute must for anyone who is struggling with the issue of admitting aloved one into, or caring for a loved one who is already in a long-termcare facility. ... I really needed this book, and I'm glad that I read it. My 91-year-old mother lives with my wife and daughter and me, and taking care of ma often leaves me confused, guilty, and irritable. This book works like a support group; the book describes everyday problems like mine, and how Ms. Schloss dealt with these problems. Also, I found her a good role model. Her stories show her patience and her constructive, positive view of herself as a caretaker.Read more
