5-0 out of 5 stars Sentient and Bittersweet
I'm willing to bet that whoever wrote the editorial review for Publisher's Weekly (above) has never known the crushing agony of losing someone to death that s/he truly loved; or suffered the kind of pain that still drops you to your knees, years, even decades later, begging for mercy. The kind of anguish where you'd gladly give your own life just to make it stop. The kind you bear when you know they are never coming back and there is nothing you can do. I'm very happy for that reviewer. I hope he or she will never know it. But Heart of Grief must be read by those who understand all too well the overwhelming tidal wave of hopelessness that accompanies the loss of a loved one. Where Publisher's Weekly found this book simplistic, I found beauty in its quiet simplicity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Paradigm Shift
Dr. Attig's book is an important part of a paradigm shift in our thinking about grief. He has thrown open a door to new thinking about how we can continue to be in relationship to loved ones who are no longer alive. This book is eloguently written with the ring of truth from the lives of real people. An excellent addition to our knowlege and understanding of grief.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of Grief
On September 11, 2001, many sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters died. I lost my own son 10 years ago and since that time I have wondered what can really be of help to parents, or other grievers in learning to live with such loss. Now, more than ever, life seems so fragile in this world and the need for understanding grief as important as ever. It is so hard when grief is so great. Our fears of our own mortality spring to the front stage of our emotins nakedly exposed to others. I recently found Tom Attig's The Heart of Grief and it met me right where I was. Using his personal experiences of grieving people, Attig describes a process of learning to love in a new way. He recounts the stories of people's losses and provides a myriad of ways that grievers have found to continue loving the ones they have lost.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars John Gould has prepared me for my turn in 'Rhapsody Home'
I purchased my copy of John Gould's "Rhapsody Home" when vacationing on midcoast Maine near his hometown of Rockland. Knowing that Gould was somewhere nearby made the reading that much more meaningful for me. I also related in these ways: There may be a 'Rhapsody Home' in my not too distant future. Also, unable to contain my enthuisiasm for the book, I read select passages aloud to my wife who retired as the head RN at a 'Rhapsody Home.' The nature of her responses validated for me the authenticity of John Gould's rhapsodic musings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gruffly charming, and wise
Odds are this is the best book by a nonagenarian you are likely to read this year. Gould, a Down East Yankee and columnist for the Christian Science Monitor since 1942, offers a collection of short commentaries from an assisted living center. The book isn't simply a humorous indictment of the foibles and peculiarities of life in a retirement home (though there is plenty of that, from comments about food to the saga of the unopenable window and the familiar refrain "There is nothing to be done about it"). The author ranges across all his 92 years to draw on memories of doctors, raising bees with his Grandfather, and the perfect tomato.5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who is, knows, or plans to be, an elder.
A long term care and assisted living administrator for manyyears, this book amused me, unnerved me, angered me. I hooted withlaughter and got choked up with sympathy. A gifted wordsmith and storyteller both, Gould spun a tale I couldn't put down. I thoroughlyenjoyed digesting his delicious words and phrases. Educational, entertaining and absorbing; a must read for any aged reader. LindaLaPointe,MRA,... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What great stories -- and thought-provoking
If you believe as I do that one of the reasons we are on earth is to help others by nurturing the good that is in all of us (our enduring human siprit), then this book is a call to action. Each story shows how the enduring human spirit lives until the moment of death, regardless of whether or not we have all of our mental and physical abilities. We need to honor that spirit and work to preserve it, especially in those who are having difficulties in their lives, such as being in a nursing home or losing loved ones.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Critically important, highly recommended reading
At the age of 91, Diane Sandell's mother died after having been severely beaten in a California nursing home. This horrific event compelled Diane to found Network Outreach--Better Living for the Elderly (NOBLE). Collaborating with Lois Hudson, Sandell then wrote Ending Elder Abuse: A Family Guide, an important work that directly confronts the inexcusably pervasive maltreatment of our elder generation at home or in sheltered care. This critically important and immensely helpful volume provides the reader with a practical, creative approach to caring for their aging parents as well as offering solutions to professional caregivers and a realistic strategy for legislators and political activists seeking to eliminate this distressing problem that will increasingly affect us all as our population ages and medical advances extend our life spans. Critically important, highly recommended reading for anyone with a loved one in assisted living or nursing home care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, Substantial Contribution
No reader can finish this book without having a profound awareness of the reality and prevalence of elder abuse as well as what can be done about it.5-0 out of 5 stars Acknowledging the abuse of the elderly.
Diane Sandell and Lois Hudson's book "Ending Elder Abuse," is an excellent guide for those who are initially dealing with the care of an elderly loved one. At the same time, there is much that can be learned from the book by those of us who have been in the position to provide care for an elderly loved one.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all caregivers and practitioners
I have seen first hand how the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia can strike fear into a family member's heart So many questions run through his/her mind. What should I do? How will I cope? What can I expect? These are just a few of the questions asked. It's great to have a support system, but one is not always available. That's why reading about the experiences of a person who has gone through what is about to be happen is so important. Taking Care of Mother, Taking Care of Me gives the reader a unique insight into caring for a loved one with memory impairment. .The author, Heydon Buchanan, is frank and honest about the experience. This is so helpful because often bad times are just not talked about. He shares with the reader how he handled difficult and delicate situations. He shows the reader that times are not always bleak and that going through this experience can make one a stronger person. But most importantly, he shows one how to laugh despite the bad times and how laughter can be the best medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Caring for a Loved One Suffering from Dementia
This book is the best one I have read that explains what it is like to care for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. It is thorough. It shows what often happens when family members disagree about how to care for the loved one: who should make the decisions; who will handle the inevitable expenses. This book shows the heartbreak when siblings not only refuse to share the day-to-day care--but to the shock of the author--actually fight for control of the loved one's money and her right to loving care.As is often the case, one family member ends up shouldering the entire burden.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent elixir for all caregivers!
Being a family caregiver myself for a dementia patient, I'm always looking for helpful information. Accordingly, I'm very happy to have found this book--an account of long-term caregiving by someone who's truly been there and is able to effectively tell us about it.
