1-0 out of 5 stars Another Country is a big diappointment
As a member of the 50 something crowd I am entering unchartedwaters in dealing with aging parents.I was expecting a helpful guideand instead got someone who is lost herself!Everyone has a story and Mary's aren't unique or enlightening. It's still on the shelf, unfinished. What was the point?

1-0 out of 5 stars Mindless chatter
I had to read this book for a senior-level college gerentology class.I was not impressed. The author rambles on with anecdotes and quotes from other authors that I had already studied in earlier classes. Her writingstyle is too ecclectic for my tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story as well as a great resource.
When I had my first baby I turned to Dr. Spock to learn about the things I might expect to experience. I didn't know I would need a book to help me be the best caregiver I could be for my grandparents.Another Country was sopertinent to my life I felt it was my diary written for me to read.I'mliving so much of what is covered in the book, with my grandmother livingwith us.Ms Pipher writes about I am experiencing. It explains somethings, answers questions, but also makes me ask some too.I'm so glad tohave found this friend!Definitely a book for my shelves, to be revisitedagain I'm sure, just as Spock was. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars At last--Real Caregiving Solutions for Real Situations
With so many "eldercare" self-help books on the market, it is truly a breath of fresh air to read this follow up to the authors' first book, "Eldercare 911." Unlike other books dealing with eldercare, the question and answer format of this book is replete with real life examples of what really goes on between the caregiver and the older person. As a caregiver and a professional in the field of geriatrics for nearly 20 years, many of the situations described in this book really resonated with me.Also, kudos to the authors for addressing an underappreciated and underserved population:male caregivers.I think this book will appeal to individuals who are embarrassed or anxious to ask about those uncomfortable questions or who think that no one else is experiencing the same difficulties they are as caregivers.I also found the Q & A format to be immensely readable and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and reassuring
This followup book really struck a chord. So many of the letters could have been written by my wife or myself. It is a relief to know that others have experienced exactly the same situations that we have. Ms. Beerman's sure and measured advice for dealing with the various issues of family, finances. and mostly ourselves, helped pull us through.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have & Read for Caregivers
"The Eldercare 911 Question and Answer Book" is the perfect follow-up companion to the first book in the Eldercare 911 series. In both books, the authors give such helpful, intelligent, thoughtful and comforting answers to real-life caregivers who have real-life problems. But the new "Eldercare 911 Question and Answer Book" is like "Dear Abby" for caregivers, only better! Reading other caregiver's questions prompts you to think of things you hadn't yet realized you need to think about. And reading the authors' answers gives you a great map to follow throughout the care-giving journey. The resource lists and worksheets are a real life-line. Reading other caregivers' stories make you realize that however lonely you feel as a caregiver you are far from alone in this experience. The last chapter is titled "Words of Hope and Comfort" and it ends the book's narrative with uplifting messages for all. If you are a caregiver - or know one - this book and its predecessor are must have's.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful presentation on design and adaptation.
This fascinating book provides a complilation of articles centered around the issue of individuals residing where they want, despite disability & illness. It begins by proposing that universal design, rather than specialized design, can be cheaper & more convenient for people with certain disabilities. Furthermore, universal design eliminates the distinction between people with or without disabilities. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars After a long haul . . .
. . . this book was finally returned to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars a worthy & useful companion
When William Grote approached me to review his new book I was elated, at last someone who has done what I, as I was writing STANDING THE WATCH: Memories of a home death, could not. Here he takes us through the maze of understanding our parents' needs & wants, in a big book, with a CD tucked into the back flap so you can print out the things you'll need along the way.5-0 out of 5 stars Help Your Aging Parent

5-0 out of 5 stars Great support for caregivers and those they love
I stumbled across this book in my local library, while searching for sources of information and guidance as I entered the caregiving relationship with my mother. While our circumstances are somewhat different than the author's, I found this book to be a helpful balance of personal narrative and issue identification and clarification. The scholarly background brings some heft to this very tender story. I bought two copies, one for my brother and one for my caregiver's support group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly accurate
My Mothers Hip is a well-written journey into the world of eldercare.Motivated by love, the author encounters the frustrating complexities of the current healthcare system, as she tries to aid each of her aging parents. This is a must-read, as our aging population increases, and family members are sure to encounter similar experiences

5-0 out of 5 stars A must
As the population ages hip fractures are becoming more prevalent. This is a must read for anyone caring for a loved one who's suffered a hip fracture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Christian devotional for all walks of life!
This book was written primarily with a caregiver/carereceiver in mind. However, I've found it to be a great blessing for daily Christian life, no matter what season you're in.I am in a caregiving role in that I have a husband and 2 small children which demand most of my time and energy.I have found the devotions are a great supplement to my daily quiet times.Mrs. Sowers has a unique perspective on her Biblical text, often pulling out an aspect from the passage that I had overlooked upon first glance. Her theology is sound and her experience adds to the depth of her message.Amazingly, with only about half of her book completed, she was diagnosed with cancer. This was after she walked both of her parents through their last sicknesses (each of them them with cancer as well). She's able to write with the unique experience of being the caregiver as well as the carereceiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthony Cirillo's wonderful words of wisdom
Anthony's book has helped our family come to terms with a very difficult decision. My wife and I have been anxious and sad at the thought of moving her mother to a long-term care facility. After reading "Who Moved My Dentures" we have a much better insight into the matter and feel more informed and less worried. As difficult as it is still going to be, just because of what it means to leave a house that has been your home for virtually your entire life, Anthony takes much of the edge off of the situation. His encouraging and warm first-person account of his experiences provides a balance to the negative press that long-term care facilities sometimes receive. He not only gives encouragement and support but also is humorous and enlightening, giving the reader a truly personal glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the wonderful people that live here and the dedicated people that care for them, including Anthony himself. If you will EVER have the need for information regarding long-term care, this is required reading. Great stories, great lives, great book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You Have Aging Parents and Loved Ones
This book gives a comprehensive view of the realities of making decisions when it comes to placing loved ones into nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The stories and events explained in the book are enlightening, happy, sad, and quite true. Having gone through such an experience, I wish I would have known about this book as it would have provided comfort and assurance in knowing the decisions our family made were the correct ones when it came time for the assisted living and nursing home experiences with our dad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, comprehensive look at Long Term Care
I wish I had this book when I had to weigh my options for putting a family member in a nursing home! Cirillo covered most of the relevant issues, and also provided some nice life-lessons for us all.
