5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Encouraging, yet Realistic
This book inspired me to do what has so far been too difficult... to gain courage to manage my mother's aging and slowly ailing health.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Long-Term Useful!
I purchased this book because a friend recommended it. I have been experiencing difficulties with my elderly father, who is 95. This book was most practical in advising me, in many aspects of caring for not only my father, but also myself: emotional/psychological, financial, safety concerns, long-term planning, etc.4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource, drawing upon anecdotal, psychological, and medical evidence to provide much-needed wisdom
Written by an award-winning journalist and a clinical professor of psychiatry, Caring For Your Aging Parents is a compassionate guide to dealing with eldercare, written especially for middle-aged and older children charged with the responsibility of looking after their elderly parents. Chapters cover especially focus upon psychological issues, including how to bridge the communication gap, how to express care and concern without reinforcing negative behavior, the transfer of authority from parent to child, how to find the best living arrangements if one's parents have to move, dealing with confusion and memory loss, how to help aging parents find positive way of compensating for losses and debilities, and much more. A valuable resource, drawing upon anecdotal, psychological, and medical evidence to provide much-needed wisdom in an era of aging baby boomers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
One of the challenges of life that many of us will have to face at some point is dealing with our aging parents. This is a very difficult time with many specialized problems. This book walks the reader through some of the most important problems they will have to deal with including gaining perspective, discovering when your parents have a hidden agenda, and dealing with problems of communication. It even includes information on the very difficult problems of transferring authority from the parent to the child, changing living arrangements, driving, remarriage and planning for death.Of course all of this is very helpful information but the one thing books like this tend to overlook is the importance of taking care of yourself as well as your parent. The authors here do not miss that detail but emphasize it's importance as an integral part of your planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accidents don't have to happen
I checked this out from a library.I found it so useful that I bought a copy for my 89-year-old mother to keep at her house and for my siblings to review when we visit. It has great sections on how to handle stairs for those who are not sure-footed, for dealing with ice (difficult for anyone to maneuver), for how to fall if you cannot avoid it, exercises for strengthening muscles, and much more.Every public library, at least, should have this, and probably every household with babyboomers or older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the risks of falling
If only one book on eldercare were to be obtained with the purpose of preserving quality of life, it should be Eric Frederikson's HOW TO AVOID FALLING. Falling is one of the major causes of disability and death in the elderly: the active aging who desire independence must have this guide, which covers all the risks of falling, methods for easily fall-proofing a home, and avoiding common falling hazards outside the home. The remainder provides strengthening exercises and encourages mobility as a way of building muscles and avoiding falls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful San Francisco Bay Area Long Term Care Guide
This is a very useful, objective resource guide for finding the best in long term care (LTC) options in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area (apparently the East Bay has a separate guide and I believe the Guide is expanding to other cities, as well). The guide is a comprehensive overview of all of the local LTC services and facilities; chapter One describes the various functions of home care, geriatric care management, adult day care, assisted living facilities, continuing care communities, skilled nursing facilities and hospice, specifying what each does and what to expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional, Caring, Personal Help to Ease Guilt & Fear
This is the most useful, warm, and accurate book I've read on the painful subject of caring for your loved one (spouse, relative, friend) who islosing their unique humanity to Alzheimer's. It is not cold and clinical, but touches the heart with joyfulness, deep understanding, and compassion. Most of all, it details, point-by-point, the signs of Alzheimer's and theemotionally difficult steps necessary to care for such individuals. It isnot a "New Age" feel-good book full of rambling cute stories, buta highly readable book that focuses on specific and reality. The author hasa lifetime of professional experience and credentials, and is supported bycountless favorable reviews by other eminent professionals in all areas ofexpertise. This is THE book for average people and even for otherprofessionals who want to understand and deal with one of the realities ofgrowing old. It doesn't offer fantasies or pie-in-the sky cures, but itdoes offer hope that both you and your loved one can go on living the most"quality" life possible. I brought the book with me to Asia andEurope, and despite the huge differences in cultures, it was verywell-received and considered extremely useful by the suffering children ofAlzheimer's patients.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
This book seemed to be written to promote the services of Geriatric Care Managers, with all of the anecdotes and suggestions tailored to that end. "I did this" and "I did that" comments abound. It wouldbe of no use to anyone outside the USA, and possibly no use to people inthe US either. Try Gruetzner's book or "Person to person" or"The 36 hour day" instead. ... Read more

As a family physician, I care for patients every day who don't have a clue what to do when their parents need care. This book can help a family prepare for the eventual tasks that either are or will face them in the future (if a parent is still alive). This complete guide is medically accurate and chock full of wise advice. It's in my library and I highly recommend it to my patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars A narrative of the trials and travails of growing old
I've Never Been an Old Man: What It's Like if You Plan to Age is an engaging first-person narrative of the trials and travails of growing old. While not a self-help book per se, readers will almost certainly glean insight in coping with the difficulties that come with loss of faculties, and the long-term value of actively embracing aging rather than simply tolerating it. Chapters speak of doctor's office fiascos, lifelong milestones, "cat husbandry with no degree" and more. A chuckle-inducing and emotionally uplifting as well as practical-eyed tour de force of the golden years of life.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is worth a read
Don details the events of his life beginning with his 54th anniversary. His wife, JJL, is becoming ill, and he is drawn into the life of a caregiver. He describes the changes in their relationship, and the things that remain the same. They have two cats, Latte and Mocha.Latte is JJL's constant companion, and Mocha is Don's.Don uses humor as he discusses JJL's need to monitor him at all times. He and she are on different sleep cycles, and she complains when he sleeps through the TV shows that she watches at night.Yet she sleeps later in the morning than he does.He talks about the difficulty of maintaining medication supplies for them both. And a constant theme throughout the book is how much having Latte and Mocha improve both their lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
I'VE NEVER BEEN AN OLD MAN is a must read for baby boomers and seniors.New author, Don Larsen, has written a non-fictional account of his personal triumphs and setbacks as he enters a new phase of his life; an elderly man caring for his ailing wife. This is much more than a man relaying his experiences as a caregiver.Mr. Larsen has created a humnorous, honest approach to handling what life is throwing his way.Read more
