5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book really helped my Mother understand what was happening to her, and helped her cope. I really recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patient/family gives this 5 stars
A patient and his wife, particiating in the Mild Cognitive Impairment study, were looking for information on AD as he had just converted to a diagnosis of Alzheimer's.Their response to this book was that we should give a copy to everyone who comes into our Center. The wife has read other books and given lukewarm responses, so this was really a significant recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, Brief Review
Having read many books on Alzheimer's, I found this one to be particularly useful, especially as a reference since it is presented an easy to use question and answer format. The authors address a lot of questions relatedto the social and emotional aspects of dealing with the disease. It isbrief, but it is intended to be to the point.Definately worthwhile. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A perspective all caregivers should consider
Many books discuss caring for one's aging parents - but here's a twist: a discussion on the topic from the parents' perspective. Interviews with aging people discuss common care-giver mistakes, misinterpretations, and issues, explaining emotional and financial issues and myths. At the heart of discussions are the title's focus: NAVIGATING THE JOURNEY OF AGING PARENTS: WHAT CARE RECEIVERS WANT. It's a perspective all caregivers should consider.
4-0 out of 5 stars If only I had known--
If, 18 years ago, I had been able to find the practical, care receiver information Navigating the Journey of Aging Parents provides we could have enjoyed my mother's last years. Instead we battled.Cheryl Kuba presents not only the what but also the why and how of humane and loving caregiving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference tool, with historical backgrounds of aging people.
Seems as tho Cheryl captured life experiences in research, in the families interviewed with real life stories of how these people just seemed to age suddenly, as their health was diminishing before their eyes. Her stories reflect the true style of living, aging, caring and where to seek help for the parents and caregivers as well.We all have to partake as caregivers during our lifetime, in one way or another. It is written... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere
A quick read and waste of time. Information contained in the book generally available to anyone in al public forums.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take a pass on this book.
Alzheimers Disease, fighting for finacial survival did not live up to my expectations. The Author clearly has "issues himself" and the biggest one is thinking we need his advice. The title is very misleading. There are many caring books on Alzheimers that include a short chaptor telling all we need to know about nursing homes etc. and protecting your money. There are no magic bullets contained in this book as the title implies and I would return it if I could.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is worthless
The book isn't about Alzheimers at all. It's simply a rehash of publicly available info on transferring your assets before someone enters a nursing home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completed my caregiving!
My Sister and I both owned this book and read it to each other over the phone (we live in different towns) so that we could make sure we were both viewing our Mother's death in the same way. I was actually caring for her, but she was very involved with my endless decisions I had to make. That was very helpful in showing me I wasn't alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful guide for patients and caregivers alike
The overall description of this book in the Review section seems to describe the contents and features of this book quite well, so I will simply add my impressions.5-0 out of 5 stars The most informative and resourceful book I seen.
As a professional in the medical field and as a lay person, I found this to be the most educational, practical and comforting book I have read on this subject. This book contains information, resources and references forevery aspect of caring for the seriously ill. The layout is organized andfinding topics is effortless. 5-0 out of 5 stars chicken soup for the nursing home!
i picked up this book because i'm a fan of the author, and boy am i glad i did. while i am not, currently, in the position to be thinking about either of my parents transitioning to an assisted living facility--or to transition myself--this is the type of book that it pays to read *before* you need it. vosen's experience coupled with dickinson's ability to address complex emotional situations is a one-two punch that makes this book a knock-out. not only is everything you could possibly need to know about assisted living covered, but it's done so in a way that is engaging and will make you feel like you've just read a self-help book (and i mean that in a good way!). moreover, while this is intended as a informational book, the real-life "case studies" are so compelling that i found myself reading to the very end to see what happened to this delightful cast of characters. even if you never find yourself in need of the practical information related to long-term care facilities, you'll benefit from the information related to aging, the elderly, family and interpersonal relationships. buy extra copies of this book to send to your siblings and friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We did not know
Mr. Seaton brings us the bad news that America's nursing homes are dismal places in which to live and to work. He does so by revealing just enough of his own story, by using the device of the case study to make various points, and by structuring both the case studies and the chapters themselves so that the reader is never overwhelmed and always intrigued. His chapter "The Healthcare Army" describes the various players in the average nursing home, and gives the audience a slight taste of their daily misery. For the social scientist and the concerned relative alike, this chapter could serve as an organizational guide to direct patient advocacy. 5-0 out of 5 stars A compassionate, complete book.
Guy Seaton's book is a compassionate, complete review of the situation in America's nursing homes.5-0 out of 5 stars By a health care professional and nursing home owner
The Crisis In America's Nursing Homes: What Are We Doing Wrong? by health care professional and nursing home owner Guy Seaton is a sober, serious, informed and informative look at a severe health care crisis facing our aging nation. Written by an experienced and thoughtful author who first started working in nursing homes more than three decades ago, The Crisis In America's Nursing Homes expertly surveys the manifold shortfalls of Medicare and Medicaid, and addresses the urgent social policy question as to why things in nursing homes are in such bad shape and what can be done about it. The Crisis In America's Nursing Homes is very highly recommended reading for health care activists, nursing home reform advocates, governmental policy makers, and anyone concerned about the quality of care they or their loved ones can expect for a nursing home environment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars For patients in the advanced stages
This book will probably be helpful to me later, but because it deals more with patients in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, it's not helpful in my situation. Perhaps the problem is with the description or title of the book as I couldn't tell the content until I'd bought it. I gave it 3 stars because it is probably good for latter-stage patient care-givers.

2-0 out of 5 stars not one of the best
I may have read too many books on Alzheimer's but this book was not as encouraging or as informative and many of the others I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide
"Finding the words" to communicate with someone who has Alzheimer's is a problem-- especially after many words have lost their meanings to that person. Harriet Hodgson, the daughter of an Alzheimer's patient, has done an excellent job in giving us a guidebook for communicating in the daily struggle all caregivers go through, as she gives us many antidotes from her personal experience with her mother. In this book, we learn about communication at all stages of the disease, the causes of communication problems, and how to "run interference" or "identifying and dealing with the obstacles before they deal with us." We can't fix things; we can't make everything right for the person with Alzheimer's, but we can try to achieve better communication, realizing, as the author says in her epilogue: "It isn't easy for caregivers to find the words they want. Some days we succeed; other days we fall short of our goal. The important thing is that we're trying to improve communication. And that we keep on trying because we care." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At the Eleventh Hour: Caring for My Dying Mother
"Once I opened 'At the Eleventh Hour,' I found it hard to put down. I looked forward to returning to it each evening, and when I finished there was sadness for me in saying goodbye to both Susan and her mom. I see the book as a chapter in a mindful life and I look forward to the sequel." 5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant memory, and keen awareness of karma
At The Eleventh Hour: Caring For My Dying Mother is author Susan Stone's own story, when the cancer diagnosis of her mother caused her to interrupt her life in a Buddhist monastery to cope with the reality of her mother's impending death. Closeness, loss, sadness and renewal are the hallmarks of this introspective yet warm book. Written with strength, poignant memory, and keen awareness of karma, At The Eleventh Hour is singularly affirming and highly recommended reading for students of Buddhism with respect to issues of death and dying, as well as anyone attempting to cope with the aging and infirmities of their parent's final days. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars misleading regarding mercury's impact
The book has some extremely helpful information, but is dangerous because it "clears" mercury as a contributor to Alzheimers Disease.I had already read Snowden's "Aging with Grace: The Nuns Study" which Shimer uses as documentation to clear mercury.I have also read Boyd Haley's work linking mercury with Alzheimer's.Since Haley and Snowden are both working at University of Kentucky in Lexington, this isconfusing and contradictory.Read more

Claire Berman's book speaks to my heart. As the child of an aging parent, I have come to realize that the difficulties I face as a caregiver are at least as much, if not more, emotional than physical. Her stories, whether directly related to my circumstances or not, address my raw emotions and help ease the pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
A most helpful book for reminding yourself how much your elderly parents would not want to be a burden to you, if they were still in their right minds. Lots of advice to make caregiving easier, well written, easy to read. Another great book is "Elder Rage" , which solves the nightmare dealing with difficult elders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Sanity!
Very practical guide, real solutions, so much I didn't have a clue about, so glad I found it, really helped me, you will use it as a reference book constantly, jam packed with things you need to know NOW. I wish I had gotten prepared earlier for my parents' old age, but I was in denial, didn't want to face it yet, and I've been in such a nightmare. This book helped me climb out of it and taught me what I should have known years ago. Don't wait for a crisis, don't stick your head in the sand, if you get prepared early and know WHAT to do, caregiving can be so much easier. Also, you MUST MUST read "Elder Rage" which is also excellent, and will save your sanity too. ... Read more

This book helps those of us new to dealing with a family member with Alzheimers's.It helps identify odd behaviors as expected and helps give caregiver tips for dealing with the affected family member.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am one of Lela Shanks grandaughters.
I strongly encourage anyone facing any type of involvement with an Alzheimer's patient to read this book.Anyone who knows the author could tell you that she is the type of person who is honest and straightforward. This book is a mirror image of her personality. There are practicalsolutions to the day to day trials of dealing with an Alzheimer's patientas well as an overwhelming sense of love and acceptance for the entiresituation. The book also deals with the importance of support forcaregivers. The best thing you can do to support yourself or anyoneinvolved with an Alzheimer's patient is to love them. The second bestthing you can do is to educate everyone involved.Start with this book andit will open your eyes and your heart in ways you never thought possible.
