5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY HELPFUL BOOK!
This book really helped me understand the aging process, hold onto my empathy and compassion, balance my life better (I was starting to lose myself), and gave me a sense of calm because I have the knowledge of how to manage it all so much better. You'll gain so much insight from this book. My entire family noticed the difference in my attitude after I read it, calmed me down so much and gave me specifics of how to cope. "Elder Rage" is the other book I recommend for coping with aging parents, particularly if you have one who is real difficult to manage.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Parents Age
Book is aimed at creating an understanding of the psychological impact to aging parent and family unit.Provides insight into how the family must act together and what pitfalls to avoid.Works on preserving the dignityof the parent, and finding ways to help the parent and still allow familymembers to maintain lives of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for every adult child with aging parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survival Guide!
This book helped me so much feel not so alone with the enormous strain I am going thorugh with my parents, who are both starting to have odd behaviors. I just sobbed at all I was going through until I read this book. Now I have some real tools, techniques, understanding, and I know how to get back to compassion when I start to lose it. Take this book with you to a support group, as I found that being around others helped me so much. Another MUST read that will help you cope is "Elder Rage" which is full of practical advice too, delivered with so much humor it is a fun read that you can't put down. Two wonderful books of hope.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone facing the challenges of caring for a loved one who needs long term support. The book contains cases which describe the experiences of several prototype situations andthe emotions that those involved deal with on a day to day basis.Thisbook highlights the fact that caregiving is a difficult task and that theemotions caregivers feel are common and normal. The book exoneratescaregives who feel guilty for the difficulties that they face and providesthe support that we need to carry on.A must read ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ BOOK FOR EVERY HUMAN BEING
This is it folks!Probably one of the most important books I have ever read.It took me, as the reader, full circle from my childhood all the way through to my current relationship with my aging parents, in a matter of hours.I could not and would not put this book down.It wouldn't let me.Never have I read anything on the issue of children dealing with their aging parents that has so thoroughly covered every human emotion. It is gut-wrenching and inspiring at the same time.Kudos to Roberta Satow for having the desire and the ability to write about a topic that is so controversial and so very necessary. This book pushed all of my buttons and made me rethink every aspect of my relationship with my parents and my own children. This subject cannot be talked about or written about enough.I took on every role while engrossed in this book.I was child, sibling, parent and aging parent all at the same time.I was hit emotionally from every angle. When the book was finished I was literally angry that there weren't more pages.I can't stop thinking about or talking about this book. Now that is the sign of a great book! Please tell me there will be more where this came from!

4-0 out of 5 stars Alot of empathy, no concrete solutions
The interviews in this book were very enlightening, giving me some new insights into the situations that I, and apparently many others, are going through with aging parents. I did sympathise with many of the adults, and I guess the only shortcoming of the book was that I expected it to provide me with solutions. I realize that may be impossible to receive from a book, but I do think I gained a lot by the empathy I felt to others who deal with the same insolvable and sometimes intolerable situations. I would recommmend this book to those just beginning to feel the pull to help their parents so that some strategies may be of help in the earliest stages before patterns are set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On.
The introduction to this book left me breathless - the author could have been looking over my shoulder at my own interaction with my mother, and dealing with the welter of emotions that come out of that relationship. I very much appreciate the author's disclosure of her own situation - I think this gives an immediacy that the reader can relate with. Anyone in a care-giving situation with their parents' should read this book, no matter what their relationship with their parents was like. I plan to recommend it to everyone I know, because they will need this kind of information sooner or later. ... Read more

This book is AMAZAING!
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Only For One's Parents
Let me second the enthusiasm for Burdick's delightful book, which indeed will bring back some haunting images from even the most caved-in mind.It is not, however, solely geared for family members and I would encourage all to buy a copy of this book, you do not need to have a mother or father with Alzheimer's, it is perfect for reading along with any friends of yours, even younger people, who are troubled by memory challenges in the Alzheimer's range. For example, I took this book with me on my visit to the local elderhostel near my home, offering to share it with anyone who would like to read a good book, and once we were snuggled up on a park bench overlooking a pool swimming with koi, the "two lap" approach found me reading aloud to a white male stranger who might have been in his early 80s, a dignified man whose clothes were impeccable, if somewhat out of style, and obviously he had memory problems as he could not tell me his name.We sat down and began to pore through the book, with its lovely illustrations--not childlike, just very clear and nostalgic. After a few pages he told me that he had been in the Normandy Invasion! There are other suggestions in the book, tips on how to say things in ways which don't threaten the memory-challenged adult, and to my astonishment the man was telling me about a friend of his who had drowned in the surf on Omaha Beach, and he (my new friend) had climbed to safety on the back of his dead buddy. When we got to the part about his favorite song, he began to sing, "My Buddy," a song which I did not know but he sang it so loudly that others in the park turned their heads and a few chimed in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
A neighbor lent me this book from her professional library when I was in the process of placing my parent into assisted living/nursing home. My parent ranks in the author's "difficult parents" category. The book is an intimate, therapeutic, elegantly written life-safer. It is especially directed at daughters but of course it is very helpful to sons and really to anyone at all who is left to take care of critical problems of the elderly as they transition out of health and often into depression on the road towards death. It illustrates compassion towards the elderly, even those so impossible that they could live no other way but by making life miserable for their children and all others around them. Even more, it helps the child or caretaker keep balanced and focused on getting out of the guilt, anger, guilt cycle. It addresses those who work endlessly to make transitions easier for others, whether from love, duty, obligation, guilt, or mixed motivations. Finally, the best one can do is good enough.
