5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, overflowing with emphathy & well written
I am helping to care for my grandmother and I stumbled upon this book 'by chance'. I am a quarter way through and this looks like a gem of a book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, informative reading.
When I learned that my father would possibly be moving to a skilled care nursing home, I looked around for material regarding caring for the elderly from a Christian perspective. This book was very helpful. The author haspersonally experienced care-giving for both of her parents. She givesinsight from all perspectives such as, health care, siblings, governmentsupport, estates, living wills, support groups and taking care of yourself. Each chapter has a Biblical scripture theme. The book would be inspiringand informative to those who are overwelmed with all the issues of takingcare of elderly parents.I found the book to especially benefit me since Iam the daughter who doesn't live in the same town as my father so theburden of care-giving falls on my sister. This book gave me many ideas onhow I can support her.I was so impressed with the information in the bookthat I purchased the book for my sister. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hints and hope with humor!
In the midst of eldercare with our parents, I've read and re-read Gail's book.Through many and diverse experiences, she shares with unusual candor, humor and insight the pain and the joys of caring for parents. She acknowledges the deep and often hidden hurts, the anger, and the denial involved. She exposes the rivalry and family dynamics that surface with eldercare. And, she shares how difficult but important healing...or at least letting go...can be.Gail's compassion, combined with her intelligence and experience, are evident throughout. Her expertise and ideas give me guidance, hope and assurance that we, too, can survive these trials and tribulations of eldercare that at times totally overwhelm us.And she helps me feel human with the extremes of emotion eldercare elicits in me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read It!
So helpful, so much I didn't know, so easy to read, such a needed book, loved it, refer to it constantly. How are we all going to get through all the years of care-giving that are ahead of us Baby Boomers?! You must get prepared, read this book, it will help you, and the other one I loved is ELDER RAGE or Take My Father, Please! That one really made me laugh as I learned so much too, and boy don't we need that!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference for All Ages
For those of us who are aging and for our children who need to know how to deal with it (and us), this is a superb reference to every aspect of growing older. It is comprehensive, with a wealth of additional resources; it is infinitely readable; and--best of all--the author understands and addresses the psychological as well as the physiological and logistical problems of aging and dealing with older relatives and friends. It belongs on the shelf next to the dictionary in every home--if, that is, you can put it down long enough to place it on a shelf. Buy one for yourself and one for each of your children--and then tell all your friends about it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dementia Diary Good Medicine For Caregiver Isolation
"Dementia Diary: A Caregiver's Journal," is personal, warm and witty. It's also heartbreaking. Tell is open with the pain one suffers watching the personality changes dementia brings to a beloved parent. He is an only child. This brings a unique loneliness in handling the sometimes slow, often startling changes dementia can bring. There is a deep feeling that no one can truly understand. Tell brings this home powerfully in his memoir. I have already recommended it to readers of my column and by email, when I coach people through their personal caregiving pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addresses the common problems of adult children dealing with their aging parents
Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Are Your Parents Driving You Crazy?: Getting To Yes With Competent Aging Parents by co-authors, therapists, and consultants Joseph A. Ilardo and Carole R. Rothman addresses the common problems of adult children dealing with their aging parents. Practical advice is provided for caregivers and family members having to deal with aging parents who refuse to stop driving when they can no longer safely do so; skimp on expenses when there is no need to do so; refuse to see and/or ignore their doctor; antagonize home health aides; avoid discussing end-of-life issues; as well as those who want to move in with their children. But more than this, Are Your Parents Driving You Crazy? has sound advice on dealing with family members who never offer to help, who resent the time the caregiving sibling spends on caring for the aging parent, actually discourages caregiving sibling involvement. There is even a section dealing with children who take undue advantage and even steal from the aging parent. Additionally, this new edition addresses the reality that assisted living is not a solution for everyone. If you have an aging parent requiring help and care, then give Joseph Ilardo and Carole Rothman's Are Your Parents Driving You Crazy? a careful reading. It could save time, energy, anxiety, all the while improving the quality of the relationship between an aging parent and their adult children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem: An informative and cautionary tale
Sure, this is a "how to" book on how to protect your aging parents' best interests. You will find that this book contains plenty of information about parasitic forces, and how to combat them. And sure, this is a book about one man's struggle against his father's corrupt home health care provider. But this book is much more than these two things. It is a powerful and true cautionary tale, and good literature in its own right. The strong-willed and loving author was determined to look out for his aging parent's best interests.Throughout the story, he bravely struggles with the indifference, incompetence, dishonesty and greed that infect in the legal, financial, medical and caretaking worlds. Our hero wants you to be armed in ways that help you avoid his nightmare. My kind of book....If you are a savvy, tough-minded person, then use this remarkable book to keep your sanity and prepare for the battles ahead. You are right to be so determined about things, even if those you care about don't get it. If you are one of those people who blindly assumes that hired financial advisors, caretakers, doctors, nurses, mental health professionals and others will be caring, trustworthy and thorough in all instances, then you need a book like this one.If somebody gave you this book to combat your Pollyanna and naivete, then quit complaining. Shut up and read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, Compelling, and Educational
I found "Is Your Parent in Good Hands?" to be extremely well written and a compelling story of one man's struggle to protect his aging father from elder abuse.Mr. Carnot's personal story was riveting. And I learned a wealth of information, including Medicare and health insurance considerations, tips on finding a caregiver for a senior citizen, and suggestions on how to help elderly people remain happy and active during their golden years.5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!
Edward J. Carnot's book, Is your parent in good hands? is riveting. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down which is something that is more usual for suspense novels than for works of non-fiction. Using the story of what happened to his father as a framework, Mr. Carnot mixes suspense with solid information that will be helpful to anyone responsible for elderly relatives, whether they live nearby or across the country.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A single source resource for seniors
More of a resource book than anything else; The Savvy Senior provides advice for seniors in a wide variety of areas. The layout for most of the sections is pretty similar. The author describes the problem, related problems, things you can do, and resources to help. For example if you have vision troubles then you might consider talking clocks, timers, or thermometers, talking blood-pressure monitors, voice-activated phone dialers, etc.The problem is where would you acquire these things since they are often not available in most stores. The resources section has the answers with web sites and phone numbers. This is just one of the many areas the book addresses.Other common problems and areas of concern for seniors that are addressed include: driving and transportation, utility assistance, telemarketing fraud, identity theft, grandparenting, money management, travel, fall prevention, retirement communities, choosing a nursing home, various medical concerns, Medicare, and Social Security. The two most valuable features of this book are the fact that it provides somewhat of a checklist of things you need to consider as you plan for aging and it points you in the right direction to get credible, quality help when you need it.The Savvy Senior is recommended for seniors and those making plans for their retirement years.

This book is a classic in its field. If you have ever known anyone with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or have worried if you will , at some future or near date, get it yourself or are mildly interested in what it is all about - this is a must book. Geared to the lay population (and professionals can learn a lot from it too) it is a fast, easy read chock full of information offered up on an appetizing way for a subject that we all want to distance ourselves from - but cannot and should not.Offering direct, hands-on hints to family members, it is a concrete guide that no other book I know of has provided. As two professionals who have specialized in the field of aging, few in psychology do, teach it and write about it, we suggest it to all our students and family members who come to us in despair and leave with hope.Dr. Lenore Powell has given us all a gift. We owe her much thanks. MarcellaBakur Weiner, Ph.D. andWilliam Weiner, Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Walsh and LeRoy go beyond the parameters of a typical research study as they share the experiences and the realities of women from around the world (18 countries to be exact) in a way that is informative and compassionate. Situating aging in a global web of social programs and public policy, the authors delve into the issues that matter most.Using a case study approach to introduce each topical chapter, the authors first allow women to tell their stories, thereby providing space to women who have been marginalized for the greater portion of their lives. This in itself is remarkable and commendable. The book is also rigorously academic, citing and adding to research on health, income, employment, family relationships, friendships, leisure, quality of life, and others for people with and without disabilities. This book is definitely an indispensable resource and staring point for further research in each field of aging, gender, and disability studies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but I'm looking for something better
I will use this book and I will recommend it to mediators, Information and Assistance people at Departments of Aging and others who serve seniors and their families and friends. That said, I find weaknesses that I hope will be corrected in future editions.I hope other authors will take a crack at this subject and take more care to be objective and neutral.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading
I found the outline of the book easy to follow and full of practical tips for those of us sandwiched between kid and parent care. The "pearls of wisdom" introducing each chapter were thought provoking and soothing. The case examples were succinctly written. Despite their brevity, however, these cases were effective in demonstrating the value of mediation to address conflict in commmon elder care situations.

Although they contain similar advice and this book is almost 20 years newer, it is not nearly as direct and helpful as Making Peace with Your Parents by Harold Md Bloomfield. I was looking for more specific advice on identifying issues and how to work through them rather than long passages about many peoples' situations with very little guidance on how to apply the advice and work through the issues. Disappointed and more appreciative of what a great book Dr. Bloomfield put together so long ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Relationships Help For Anyone
Nobody's Baby Now by Susan Newman, PhD. is Dr. Newman's twelfth book and a great help for working out personal conflicts between generations. As a family counselor Dr. Newman saw the need for this book, the only one which covers the problems between parent and adult children, dealing with the relationships from the point of view of the adult child. She offers many case studies and interviews which she documented over several years and which cover almost every conceivable relationship difficulty between grown children and their healthy, independent parents. (Other books cover problems with parents who need care and are dying.)These generational relationship problems are common to all adult children, and Dr. Newman offers numerous solutions which the adult child can use to develop a happy, appreciative, loving relationship with his or her parents in their older years so that they won't suffer regrets after the parent dies. This is an excellent book for every young adult to own and for every parent of adult children to read in order to make the best of this closest of all bonds, learning to treasure each other as peers and friends and letting go of old tapes and practices from childhood which are no longer appropriate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, solid and marriage saving
As a professional in the field, what I like about Nobody's Baby Now is that the author gets to the point quickly and in clear, concise language. The author makes complicated problems and issues with parents easy to sort out and resolve. Her real life examples make you think she's talking about you and your parents. She has solutions for adult children who resort to child-like behavior when with parents, who allow parents to continue to run their adult lives or parents who put a wedge in their adult children's marriages. She's got a solid handle on in-laws and tells readers how to get their own; and she totally understands overly involved, judgemental grandparents. Her main points are highlighted in boxed areas for quick reference which tell you how to get a "grip" on the issues you may have with a parent.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anchor for families
There is no mistaking that shocked, disappointed, guilty, forlorn facial expression of a loved one visiting, and realizing for the first time that their family member is a nursing home resident. They say things like "I didn't know she'd be living this way", or "I hope I did the right thing."How comforting and reassuring it can be for them to have this wonderful tool to review the work they did.The book is awesomely user-friendly!Because of the simple language and extreme practicality of the content, anyone using it will experience a sense of satisfaction with the job well done.Family members will be able to objectify and regain perspective by reviewing what they have written. When details get foggy, as they often do when emotions surface, instead of being tossed about and doubting their decision, an anchor will be there for those who have done their homework. These authors have made the homework easy by providing the worksheets right here in the text. 5-0 out of 5 stars Will save you an immense amount of time & aggravation

All aspects of the evaluation and securement process are covered in authoritative, practical, "user friendly" detail. If you are given the responsibility for the nursing home placement of a family member, begin with a careful reading of The New Nursing Homes. It will save you an immense amount of time, aggravation, confusion, misunderstanding, expense, and disappointment -- and insure your loved one the best possible care their resources (personal and governmental) can afford them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars practical and emotionally sensitive advice and resource suggestions
Dr. Marion's book gives greatpractical suggestons for the caregiver, always considering the emotional impact for the elderly person and for the caregivers. She talks realistically of the hardships and physical problems which can occur and what can be done to help andto prevent potential problems and she affirms the many possibilities forenjoyment, satisfactions and life resolutions for elders and their loved ones. Sharing her personal experiences as well as the professional (with many humorous and sometimes poignant stories), this book gives a great sense of optimism aboutfinding ways, large and small to help, even in very tough situations . There are good detailed lists of steps to take and also longer thoughtful passages aboutemotional and spiritual issues in aging and cargegiving.I am an RN and work with many seniors and their caregivers, and this book gives so much in an easily read format, I highly recommend it to caregivers.

The lists and tips in this book are great. I seriously feel a little less crazed when dealing with my mom because I know I have Dr. Marion to help!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to follow
It's been hard dealing with my father who is 97 years old and in an assisted living home - god bless him! He's so sweet but gets confused, paranoid, etc. and I was feeling overwhelmed. This book is nice because it's short and sweet, but it's got everything in there. I really liked the 10 step outline, it's so easy to follow. I've been able to read it out of order and find what I need for my own issues without feeling like I'm missing something. ... Read more
