5-0 out of 5 stars A new conclusion regarding a metabolic disorder that affects at least one third of adults in industrialized countries
"The Potbelly Syndrome: How Common Germs Cause Obesity, Diabetes, and Heart Disease" presents a new conclusion regarding a metabolic disorder that affects at least one third of adults in industrialized countries. Co-authors Russell Farris (a retired artificial-intelligence researcher who, after sustaining a heart attack in 1998, began studying hart disease and related illnesses) and scientist, physician, and clinical teacher Per Marin have discovered that PBS (potbelly syndrome) is not caused by poor eating and exercise habits, instead it is caused by chronic infections, which lead to a pattern of slight, long-term excess of cortisol, a stress hormone. The effects of the excess cortisol can lead to blocked arteries, Type 2 diabetes, and raised cholesterol, insulin, and blood sugars. For those who suffer from PBS and are unable to correct their obesity through the usual prescribed methods of diet and exercise, "The Potbelly Syndrome" offers additional insight about the cause and possible approaches to correct the syndrome and lead to improved health. Filled with graphs, illustrations, examples, and practical information, "The Potbelly Syndrome" may lead to a rethinking of one of the most common yet challenging health conditions. A welcome addition to both academic and community library Health & Medicine collections, "The Potbelly Syndrome" is directly accessible to the non-specialist general reader, and has substantial value and appeal to health professionals as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING DISCOVERY.........
Whoa! I thought that I was healthy, Russell Farris and Per Marin will change how you look at your world. At least I can say that. This book is a wake-up call for people who can't seem to figure out why they are depressed, overweight, or constantly craving that sugary donut. This book has changed my thinking more that any other so called "diet" book out there. The relationship between how we deal with stressors (sugar, caffeine, catastrophic thinking, etc) is much more important than ANY other single thing we do for our health. You will never lose weight if you don't change your lifestyle to include more relaxation techniques. Period, end of story! Thanks Mr. Farris, and Dr. Marin!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach
This book is a radical departure from the usual approach to the mounting problem of obesity and the disorders that seem to always accompany it.Rather than the same old refrain about exercising more and eating less, it explores a different theory and approach to treating obesity, heart problems and diabetes. This is one of the few health related books that I have read that does not put all of the blame for weight problems on the overweight person. The author cites a multitude of references to support his theories, and some very good explanations regarding how our bodies actually function. There are some good practical suggestions on ways to reduce stress, and beleive me that you will see the need to do so after reading this book! I would recommend this book for anyone who has tried years of dieting with no lasting result. You owe it to yourself to dig deeper as to the possible cause of your weight and to seek alternative treatment. This book will encourage you to seek answers to your health problems and become more pro-active with your health care providers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for sufferers
I got this book without reading the subtitle (Strategies for Family and Friends).I thought it might help me with Binge-Eating problems. It didn't.In fact, I got very bored. It was sickeningly boring and only discussed how to handle things if you weren't really all that involved.4-0 out of 5 stars written specifically for family and friends
This is a good book designed for the friends and family of eating disorder sufferers. Before I gave this book to my familiy, I read it myself.I liked that the authors suggested therapy/counseling for friends and family, who can sometimes feel helpless watching their loved one suffer with an eating disorder. There was also a lot of focus on parents. That's good for many, but my family is not a problem in my case. When I gave this book to my family, I told them to ignore that chapter since it did not pertain to us.The information provided within the book helped my family understand what I'm going through, and for that I am thankful.I didn't know how to get the words out to explain the eating disorder. This book helped me tell my family of my disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful book with outstanding perspective
The quality and truth of this book shocked me. It talked of experiences in the exact way that I myself would explain them, except with a professional yet warm perspective. I could not put it down from the moment I started it. I would recommend this book to people going through such trauma as well as people looking for inspirational and enlightening reading material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive study
This is a well written, easy to understand book. Senneff goes to great length to detail information on the subject of peripheral neuropathy. This book is very helpful for anyone looking to understand and seeking relief for this problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anodyne Therapy....GREAT for Neuropathy
I recently was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy by my Podiatrist. He sent me to therapy for a new treatment called Anodyne Light Therapy.I have had 3 treatments and it seems to be helping.I think this is fairly new to Our disease.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought this book thinking I might learn something new.It is expensive for a paperback, but its 280-odd pages are in a very large typeface, so its cover leads you to expect more to read than there is.There are numerous anecdotes from people who had struggled with diagnosis of this disease - are doctors really so incompetent?Unfortunately, I did not find many of these to be helpful. The book covers quite a lot of treatment possibilities, many of which are not much use, or not available at present anyway.I did not learn anything new from the book, in spite of my hopes from reading other reviews.I had learned from excellent web sites (neuropathy-trust.org) and other books, and as a patient not afraid to ask questions of my doctors, nor intimidated by them, I found that the book did not give me any new knowledge. It is markedly unhelpful with practical solutions - shoes, socks, etc., that are important for day to day living.A big disappointment after the other rave reviews. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must
What's the difference between 'prediabetes' and all-out diabetes? Can a diagnosis of 'prediabetes' be reversed? These and other questions are answered in a survey which includes an overview of diabetes risks and health factors but provides a welcome focus on the state of health which leads into diabetes. Chapters explain blood sugars, risk factors, and provide a plan to avoid developing diabetes. This should be a 'must' for any overweight person, or those with a family predisposition to diabetes.

This masterful study of the relationship of diabetes and depression, among other emotional effects of discovering one has a chronic disease, will give you hope that you CAN DEAL with your illness proactively and positively. Not the most up to date advice on this topic but one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable style, positive, compassionate approach
Dr. Rubin and his co-authors write in an interactive, conversational style. I found this enjoyable and engaging. There is enough information without excessive detail. I felt as if I were having a lively conversation with good friends who all had a personal experience with my condition. I got through the whole book in an evening after the kids were in bed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Book

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Expensive
While the book provided some good information, I was expecting more judging by the title. (I was also surprised at how small the book was given its cost.) Bottom line? There is much more specific and far more up-to-date information available for free on the internet. A quick search under "diabetes mellitus and pregnancy" will provide a wealth of it, including specific (and current) rates of birth defects at what blood sugar levels and which tests should be conducted during which trimester.
5-0 out of 5 stars What you REALLY need to know
This is a book for diabetic women planning or in pregnancy. It is very detailed and some of the language may be difficult for the lay person. However it goes into great detail about diabetes managment and reducing the risks of complications in the pregnancy. You will learn more here than in any doctor's office. If you are not medically inclined, get the book, read it then ask your doctor or nurse to explain questions that the book evokes about your situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Voice Of Reason And Hope
Whether you've just been told you have diabetes or have lived with it for years, there is something for you here. The writing style is easy to understand, and the ideas are reasonable and practical. There is a lot of good information here, and it is presented in a style that felt like I was connecting with a person, a friendly dietician who understood my confusion and frustration. The author recognizes the fact that people will need time to make changes and helps diabetics find a food plan that they can use with the whole family without agonized screams about serving cottage cheese and carrot sticks for dinner. :) I've bought other books that are either too academic or have meal suggestions that I'd never use. After using some of the ideas in this book, I was able to get my glucose levels into the normal range without too much trouble or eating food I don't like. I also lost 15 pounds to boot without really trying. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the newly diagnosed
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes nearly 10 years ago. And I found this book very useful and practical. Medical understanding of diabetes is always changing, and this book is a good update for me on the nutritional end. It's even helped me win a couple of arguments with a nurse who is "close" to me, but hasn't studied diabetes since nursing school! Excellent value, and I've recommended it to the nutritionist with whom I work.

5-0 out of 5 stars No gloom and doom here!
As a recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetic, I am looking for lots of information on how to manage the disease in a healthy, positive manner. This book has really helped me.Author Leontos clearly explains the challenges in store but emphasizes positive ways to react.I particularly like her information on modifying recipes. This excellent book provides very practical guideline to insulin pumping and covers all the aspects of pumping: from the best pump wearing to the complex tinny tuning of insulin regime. Usually such kind of books contains two main parts: the first one explains whom and why need the pump, while the second part retell user guide for a pump. The reviewing book is favorably different by substance. It bases on the modern scientific research published. 4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Diabetic Cookbook
By Finsand, Caldwell, and White - This book has thousands of recipes and they are good.I don't think I will ever grow tired of using it.However, if you or someone you are cooking for has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes, this is not the book to get you started. It does have useful charts, but it has very little educational material about the disease.I would recommend this book as a companion to a book with comprehensive information about diabetes.I think the most prominent chart in the book deals with sugar substitutes.(The Simply Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook by Mary Donkersloot is a great place to get started. With this book and the book you are reading about, youu will never lack in information and choices.)5-0 out of 5 stars Better than most 'Regular' Cookbooks
Onewould not know that these recipes were designed for a diabetic, until they looked at some of the ingredients. These are tasty, flavorful, and creative recipes for the whole family, designed to lower thesugar/carbohydrate intake grams for diabetics. The recipes are simple, andmade with the 'usual' ingredients with the exception of the sugarsubstitutes. And, there are handy conversion charts that show how toconvert 'sugars' to sugar substitutes. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
Making Peace with Food is so good because you can't read it as a passive audience. The exercises that allow you to internalize the messages of the book are invaluable to anyone who is tired of being preached to by someone who doesn't understand ED.The themes of the book include learning how to stop objectifying yourself by constantly focusing on your body. Also, it shows how to appreciate all kinds of bodies, including your own.It made me think twice about who I was starving myself for.I finally found someone who understood my situation and my feelings instead of just telling me to relax and eat.It is so good.I wish I could give a copy to every woman in America.By the way, it is clearly written for young women, I am 19 and found it quite relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food is no longer my higher power!
After years of learning negative behaviors around food, and years of an unhealthy relationship with food, I found a book that challenged my ideas about food and weight. I read a review on this book that mentioned how upset they were about this book telling you that it is ok to gain weight. Well, what this book really says is that we all come in different shapes and sizes and that is ok. Maybe it is not healthy to be the weight that we desire? I loved this book because it helped me to learn that food is no longer my God or my enemy. It taught me that it is ok to eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars changed my life
I had a serious eating disorder and this book was a turning point for me in my recovery. One of the other reviewers said this book would only be appropriate for fat people who wanted to feel good about themselves. This was not the case for me.I had a serious problem and was very thin. The exercises were so helpful in this book.I believe that one cannot really recover until they deal with their attitudes regarding weight and self-acceptance.This book helps you to do that. ...
