1-0 out of 5 stars Fish Oil or Snake Oil? Author is a Complete Fake!
The author of this book took an article about Scandinavians and longevity from the medical literature, (research from REAL physicians) and decided he could use it to make lots of money by selling his bottled "Omega-3 Miracle". The medical literature does NOT in any way support any claims about the bottled stuff he is selling. Omega 3 fatty acids IN FISH have been proven to increase longevity. There are NO medical studies on Mr. Gorden's product. The author is NOT an MD, though he uses the title in his name. He is not a cardiologist. He is not a practicing radiologist and, despite the bio, he can not be located anywhere as a practicing Osteopathic doctor either. He is a complete hoax! So eat healthy foods, live a healthy life style and save your money - don't fork over your hard-earned cash to a guy who lies about his background. Love the photo on the cover of him with a stethoscope around his neck - almost makes you think the guy has a medical background.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Know: This Book Could be Only 90% True
I am not purchasing ISLANDIC fish oil.The prices are too high.I suspect that this Dr. Gordon wishes to make additional profits by convincing readers to purchase only from this source - from his own web site.I believe this because other respectible authors make similar claims for fish oil using non-Islandic sources.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't trust this guy
This book is not very good the same information can be found in five minutes on the internet. Any Dr. who uses an honorary degree after his name is suspect. Dr. Garry Gordon does not hold a valid MD degree, he is a DO and should only use that degree after his name. Although a DO deegree is an equivalent medical degree, the fact that he uses a fake MD degree shows his insecurity about his credentials. Further, his is a strong proponent of chelation therapy which is a fraudulent medical practice. He is a radiologist not a heart specialist as the commercial states. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Dr. Nathan really knows his stuff and is one of the researchers who might just turn the epidemic of Type 2 diabetes in this country around.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nearly worthless
I dissagree with the previous reviewer in one aspect:the book is of no use to you if you already have type II diabetes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Only pure Type 2 Need Read This Book
I was very disappointed when I opened the book and read various areas seeking current information on insulin production, injection, pumping and diabetic classifications since the changes of 2003. I am now 53 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes at 38. Due to medical ignorance, rather than adaguate testing, the Adult Onset of high Blood Glucose was treated with oral medication for 5 months. I had no pointers currently recognised for Type 2. Finally it was suggested I might want to consult a specialist familiar with using insulin. He looked at my Log Book and with and overall dailey use of 24 units had me under 150mg/dL as an average reading the same week. This book is very simple, written at a grade school level (at least it used to be grade school) and only treatment of Type 2 with Diet, Exercise, and Oral Medication is set forth with any detail. The general title is deceptive. Barry J. Shiffert ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A critically important addition to any diabetes reference collection and reading list
1-2-3 Diabetes Diet: A Step-By-Step Approach To Weight Loss Without Gimmicks Or Risks by Robert J. Buynak is a complete introduction and methodical approach to the role of proper nutrition in treatment and controlling diabetes. Ably guiding readers through simple, "user-friendly ideas for proper dietary assessment, 1-2-3 Diabetes Diet offers reliable, "user friendly" guidance in such issues as properly navigating the grocery store, "survival" when eating out, enduring social pressures to go off a diabetic oriented diet, and trusting yourself to make healthy eating choices when dealing with diabetes. A critically important addition to any diabetes reference collection and reading list, 1-2-3 Diabetes Diet is very highly recommended as a knowledgeable and concise presentation of effective dietary tactics and nutritional strategies related to the condition of diabetes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good way to get started
This book has a lot of good tips on how to set a weight-loss goal for yourself and how to follow through. It makes certain key points with welcome insistence, for example, the importance of portion control. Dr Buynak doesn't claim weight loss is easy, and he recognizes that without a modicum of self-control, nothing will happen. But he provides sensible advice on what foods to cut down on, what foods to have more of, the relative uselessness of fad diets, the crucial component of exercise, and more specialized advice on diabetes. The book is easy to read and well-organized, and it contains helpful hints on how to eat sensibly in restaurants. Well worth it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great diabetes book

3-0 out of 5 stars Great account on the discovery of insulin
This is a thorough account about the discovery of insulin. The beginning of the book is great story-telling, pure & simple. It starts off with the details of earlier research and the treatment of diabetes prior to insulin, and then goes on to tell the suspenseful tale of the research that lead to the discovery of insulin.Bliss provides clear information and notes when there are conflicting accounts of various events.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very readable
The book can be viewed as having four sections: background, the "discovery", the fallout, and an epilogue. I found the sections on background and the "discovery" very exciting and compelling reading. The sad story of the subsequent bitter fallout over credit for the discovery of insulin is more plodding and painful but necessary reading. The short epilogue follows the significant persons through to their deaths.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Vivid
This fine book is perhaps the best single narrative account of a major medical breakthrough.Bliss's background is not in medicine or biology but rather in Canadian history, politics, and Canadian cultural history.Prior to writing this book, he wrote what is probably the definitive biography of Frederick Banting and more recently he produced a highly praised biography of William Osler. One of the best things about this book is the broad perspective that Bliss brings to the subject. The exciting story of the isolation of insulin is grounded in a well laid out explanation of the social and cultural circumstances of these events. The situation of Canadian society, the nature of academic life, and the consequences of a great discovery being made in a Canadian city are laid out very well.Bliss is excellent on the science as well.He is a fine writer explains the background and events of the isolation very well.He really shows the team nature of this event and of scientific activity in general. He is very careful to delineate the contributions of all participants and shows how a group effort was really necessary to isolate insulin.A signficant point of revision is his emphasis of the role of JRR MacLeod, the Professor of Physiology at Toronto. In traditional accounts, he is a scientific bad guy who hijacks credit from Banting and Best.In Bliss's account, he is an important contributor who was probably victimized by Canadian nationalism.Bliss is very good as well on diabetes as a clinical problem, the impact of the isolation of insulin, and difficulties of moving from laboratory work to mass production.A fun and informative book that can be enjoyed by specialists and the general reading public. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful advice, tips, tricks, and techniques
Published by the American Diabetes Association, an organization whose mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes, Diabetic Cooking For Seniors is a highly practical, time and effort-saving cookbook. All recipes use five ingredients or less, and the portions are scaled down for seniors rather than the usual immense quantities meant to feed large families. Nutritional information and official American Diabetes Association exchanges are included for each recipe, and the text is in reasonably large type to make reading easier. Diabetic Cooking For Seniors is a "must" for any independent senior looking for useful and delicious culinary ways to help keep their blood sugar and calorie intake down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU!!!This is a great recipe book
Finally, quick recipes! Some of the recipes you get in other books have way too much prep time or are too complicated to make.I think this is the best resource for someone with diabetes who has to watch sugar/carb intake.I hope more versions of this book comes out.

I am so pleased to have found this book.Type II runs in our family, and I'm trying to prevent it, by being careful about carbs, and balancing them with protein. All the balancing work is done for you. Great to find a cookbook with easy recipes that taste good, and you won't have to eat it all week!It was just what I had been looking for. I've only had it a few days, and have already tried several recipes. And these easy recipes make you realize how easy it could be to create your own variations. As a singleton, I'm glad things serve one or two, and it gives me a better idea of what a right-sized portion should be. ... Read the workbook and found that although I'm sure that it is useful for others you really have to be of a christian faith to use this workbook. It does have many ideas and suggestions in terms of weight controll but I feltit emphasized to much on "God" and "problems with yourfamily of orgin" and not enough on making us realized that we are incontroll and we are responsible for our weight not anyone else.I wouldalthough recommend it to someone whose had a horrible childhood. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best of it's kind
In my opinion, this is the best book ever written on this subject.Geneen Roth's personal struggle with compulsive eating is heartfelt. The other personal stories are very helpful also. She covers so many areas that at first glance you would not consider to be tied in with compulsive eating.I read this book when it first came out and lost weight easily. After my last pregnancy, I again began to struggle with my weight.I used Weight Watchers to get most of it off, but then hit a plateau. It was then that I discovered that I was still eating compulsively, only I was eating healthier foods.I am now back with Geneen's books and feel like I'm back on the wagon. This book makes you reflect on all the issues you have experienced with your weight. She does it empathetically, but also with a touch of humor.I hope this book will touch others the way it has touched me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GODSEND
When I finally faced the horrible reality that I suffered from compulsive binge eating, and went to a psychiatrist who specialized in teenage eating disorders, the first thing she had me do was read this book.Thank God for her advice.I know now the hundreds of diet books I had read before were such garbage- and that they contributed to my eating disorder by telling me what I could and couldnt eat-and when-to the point that I was never eating what I really wanted, and when I did, I felt so guilty that I just shoved food as fast as I could in my mouth, figuring I would "start fresh" the next day. This cycle of binge eating and restrictive dieting is what geenen roth helps you overcome in this book, by giving the sound advice that if you eat only when actually hungry ( and if you were like me and didnt know when that was anymore, she tells you how to work towards knowing) and stop when you are full, and eat foods you actually enjoy, that you will control your weight in a non-obsessive way.I have spent so much money on so many ridiculous diet books that I know look back on with regret, but this book is one I will always treasure for helping me get through a truly awful period and finally helping me to see the light and shed myself of a terrible habit once and for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
This book is good for the compulsive eater. However, there seemed to be just a little emotional detachment, making it slightly harder to pull someone into it. Granted, a compulsive eater may have a hard time with ANY book of this type, but there was just a little missing. Still, this is one of the best books on this subject, so this book should definitely be read for that reason. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowerment at Its Best
This book gives comprehensive dietary and nutrition information to empower readers. Because diet and lifestyle factors are the primary causes of Type 2 diabetes, most Type 2's can control their diabetes completely. This is good news because the health problems that can occur as a result of untreated diabetes include blindness, early heart disease, and amputation of body parts. With over half of those with Type 2 not knowing they have it, following the suggestions in the book makes sense whether you have diabetes or not.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I'm diabetic and struggling to get my blood sugar under control so I was thrilled to see this book with its handy list of 750 foods. The list shows the GI and GL [Glucose Level] counts plus the carb count for a given quantity of each food. In trade paperback, it is light and easy to carry around. My only complaint is that the explanations can be a little hard to understand [okay, I don't understand some of them at all]. I like the idea of moderate levels of carbohydrate in my diet and that's what this book recommends. I've done the low carb route and lost weight but can't stick to it forever. For one thing, it just doesn't feel healthy to me. ... Read more

This book starts out with tips for school age kids (like having your mom come and talk to your elementary class) and rolls into tips on how to "lower your insulin dosage" beforehand if you are going to smoke marijuana at a party and how to adjust for drinking mixed drinks and beer.I don't think these are "really cool" tips for kids, at least not my kid.I wouldn't be able to give this to my 11 year old daughter to get any use out of the first half of the book and not be mortified by the second half.If I waited until she was in college, the first half would be totally wasted. This book cannot make up its mind who it is speaking to.Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful diet guide I've found yet!
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes two and a half years ago. My first response was to research diet, nutrition and exercise as means of controlling my blood sugar. I've gone through dozens of books since then, and this is the first one I've found that actually pulls the informationtogether in a practical way that works for me.5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, to the point, encouraging, and informative
During the time of denial, anger, depression and total rejection of my diagnosis as Diabetic, I purchased several books to research and find out what to do. The Good News Eating Plan For Type II Diabetes by Elaine Mageegave me the immediate help and information I needed as if I were speakingwith the author. Clear, to the point, encouraging, and full of informationfor the newly diagnosed. I have returned to it repeatedly for assistance.Thank you, Elaine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information and advice
This book provides an excellent resource for Type II diabetics. The first section clearly explains essential information needed to manage diabetes and especially nutritional and dietary approaches. The author makes goodarguments for balancing carbohydrates with fat and fiber, the advantages ofmono-unsaturated fats, and especially that sugar alone is not the enemy. The role of the glycemic index is stressed and how foods that have lowerindices are also likely to make you feel less hungry longer. Thenutritional goals and strategies are easy to read and absorb. The bookhowever falls short of its potential in the sections which describe how toimplement all this advice. Quantitative information on nutritional contentand glycemic index are presented inside the text in 3 long tables of everyfood known to man which are repetitive and disturb the flow of reading thetext. These should have been combined into a single table highlightingfoods high in fiber and low in index; as it stands one must flip back andforth to figure out which foods provide what. There is a lot of goodinformation here - especially useful is a list of best tasting foods thatare "light" - one can look for substitute brands for foods inone's own present diet, which are thus likely to be used. There is someinformation presented on how to balance some meals e.g. adding cram cheeseto a bagel actualy helps! However, one is left to figure out meal plans andmenus, where the book could have really helped with suggestions for a weekof menus for several of the stategies suggested. All in all, this was avery helpful book, but it could have been MUCH better with a little moreorganization and detail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Off the Diet Track for Good
This book is an answer for all the chronic dieters out there. I have been a diet queen for 20 years. This book will help get to the bottom of why you're on that track and how to get off it. How to trust your own body to tell you what you need to eat and when. There are ideas that helped me combat the mental talk that's been going on all my life keeping me on the yo yo diet. It is such an amazing concept to find that you can listen to your body and just start losing weight naturally. The weight comes off more slowly, but that is because you stop starving yourself and feel comfortable all the time. It's a better way to go since you no longer end up on the other side of the diet where you end up binging because you've been starving. So, in the long run you lose the weight for good. I feel like I've been set free to enjoy life and not worrying about calories or fat or carbs. That's not easy to do after all the different diets I've been on. It's worth the extra effort to lose the weight comfortably and naturally. I highly recommend this book to any one who has tried to lose weight by going on a diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get at peace with yourself---and the pounds will adjust!
Dr. Dorie brings a lot of personal experience, drive and enthusiasm in her approach to diet and health concerns.
4-0 out of 5 stars Has some good advise if you can get past the touchy-feely
This book gave a lot of godo advise. As someone who is and has struggled with a ED (both bulimia and anorexia), this book started to get me to look past my ED and ask myself why? However, I felt like some of the messages were a little too touchy feely for me. Especially the way she asked a question to ask yourself at the end of each section. It got a little too twelve step-like... which wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Still I recommend this book over the similarly fashioned book "When you eat at the refridgerator, pull up a chair" that one wasn't bad... but this one is better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lasting Change
Burris has my full endorsement. I recommend that all of my associates and clients get his book, do the homework and listen to the reprogramming CD. I personally have benefited from his mind fitness techniques as a individual and especially as a teacher. His methods are easy to learn and implement. They empower you from within, not tell you what to do. Burris is original and brilliant! Truly an 'Aha!' sense of this really works, when I've tried EVERYTHING.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reprogramming The Overweight Mind is at the cutting edge
Kelly Burris' Reprogramming The Overweight Mind is at the cutting edge and one of the most valuable assets I have come across.I should know.I tried and was successful on Atkin's.I loved the thought that I could eat food and still lose weight. But, you know after awhile, you get tired of steak, prime rib, etc. and desire a big fat carb overload. And in fact, that is what I did after losing 20 pounds on Atkins. And soon I was back to my old weight plus a few pounds. As a 55+ male, I felt frustrated and was not eager to start the climb back to monitoring my carbs. So there I was stuck.Again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New?
As the author of this book I can tell you definitively that the quotes Trisha Brudsal put in her review do not exist on the CD. You can read the first two chapters of the book or listen to the first track of the CD by going to KellyBurris.com. ... Read more
