5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to recognize the body's natural - and real - hunger cues
From binge eating to obesity, Americans are more obsessed with weight than ever - yet diets and food logs often prove impossible to stick with. Try another approach with THE APPETITE AWARENESS WORKBOOK, promoting appetite awareness training as a solution to weight struggles. Learn to recognize the body's natural - and real - hunger cues, and differentiate these from other non-hunger cues in a title which shows how to link emotional eating habits with more sensible routines. The workbook approach lends especially well to home use.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is ground-breaking
It seems easy to say "Eat when you are moderately hungry and stop eating when you are moderately full." Well, then why don't we all eat that way? Because many of us often eat "recreationally" (my word). I know that my eating often has less to do with hunger and more to do with what time it is, what yummy thing is in front of me, how bored I am, or how emotionally stressed I am.
2-0 out of 5 stars So Disappointed
I bought 3 books on this subject this week, and this is the one I wish I hadn't bought. I am so disappointed in this book. I was expecting a true workbook, and there is no real plan in this book. There is a lot of interesting information, some of which is useful, but if I hadn't also bought The Seven Secrets of Slim People, I wouldn't have gotten a plan to actually do the work I need to do to be able to find out when I'm hungry and when I need to stop eating. ... I was very disappointed in this book. I bought 3 books when I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes & this one cost the most & it was the least helpful. 5-0 out of 5 stars An important addition to the clinical literature on compulsive eating
American women and girls (and, increasingly, men and boys) are bombarded with messages about ideal bodies and acceptable weights, "good" and "bad" foods and the health risks of "obesity." Toss in the wealth of other stresses related to contemporary life and a recipe for disordered eating is born.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for clinicians AND clients
This book is beautifully written and an easy read for clinicians as well as clients. In a very straightforward yet well researched manner, the authors excel at addressing issues related to eating, self-esteem and the fallacy surrounding "diets."Via poignant case examples and theoretical applications, this book is an outstanding resource that should be on every therapist's (and client's!) shelf. In addition, this book pushes clinicians to be aware of their own internalized ideas and issues related to weight. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Editorial Review

As the title suggests, the author is graphically frank about the medical necessities of living with juvenile-onset diabetes, and squeamish readers may find her memoir harrowing. In its essence, however, this is a story of emotional growth and healing. Diagnosed at 9 by her older sister Denise, who is herself a diabetic, Andie Dominick spends her adolescence rebelling against her condition: "dieting" by skipping shots, undergoing a dangerous abortion at 17. When, at 21, Andie discovers 33-year-old Denise dead in the house they share, she begins to reexamine the reckless lifestyle that killed her sister and threatens her as well. The discovery three years later that she has diabetic retinopathy, which could lead to blindness, helps Dominick realize she cannot follow her sister's path: "Denise always told me having the disease didn't have to change my life. But now it has ... because I am finally facing who I am." Love and eventually marriage continue Dominick's process of self-knowledge and acceptance, though there is no facile happy ending. (She has a tubal ligation rather than risk passing diabetes to another generation.) Dominick's deliberately plain prose and gritty candor render her struggle accessible and real. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings
The book was good, no doubt. The writing was compelling, but as I sit back having just finished the book, I don't really understand how it made me feel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Once beginning this book, I needed to keep reading!
I have a 12 yr. old child with diabetes and had been looking for information to do a research project on; diabetes seemed to be what I was heading toward when I accidently came across this book.Looking at someone's point of view who has dealt with type 1 diabetes for most of her life and how she handled her care, monitoring of blood sugars, medical personnel, emotions, and relationships has put a whole new look on how I should or shouldn't teach and help my own child with this disease. The author made me understand completely what she had dealt with and how, making living with diabetes more understandable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read
In all, Needles was a good memoir of living life with Type 1 diabetes. If you're looking for a happy, positive story about living with a chronic condition, this probably isn't for you, but the other 99% of books on diabetes are usually full of advice (though not necessarily practical) on that subject. What this book does, however, is shows one person's real experience with living with diabetes, which isn't always as great as the medical professionals would have everyone believe.Andie Dominick is a good author and helps provide a perspective that is noticably absent from the field of publishing on diabetes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Burnout
EXCELLENT book for those living with diabetes.Diabetes burnout is very common. This book is full of tips, suggestions, and even tests, to help you in dealing with diabetes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Golden empathy at first but it only goes so deep
When I first saw the chapter for "Werewolf Syndrome" I knew I had to buy this book.It makes for an interesting read at first to learn about others' experiences.Though one thing the author fails to do is provide instruction on the process of motivation, and only provides a very shallow surface, if any, of scientific insight into why people get "burned out".I would suggest going to the book store and skimming this book to feel better about yourself but don't take it home with you.5-0 out of 5 stars This book tells it like it is
When I picked up Diabetes Burnout, I was truly amazed.Dr. Polonsky understands that there are "barriers to self-care," real life problems and situations that get in the way of doing what's best for our bodies.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Overeaters
At last!A book written for people who are addicted to food and who are sick to death of diets, support groups, meetings and excuses. This book teaches you how to recognize the addictive voice inside of you and become master over it.AVRT, or Addictive Voice Recognition Technique, truly gives the power and control back to YOU.This recognition, as well as applying, what the Trimpey's refer to as T.A.P.S. is all you'll ever need again to lose all your excess weight.TAPS stands for Time - Amount - Place - Stuff. Setting rules about the time you eat, the amount you eat, where you eat (never in the car or in front of the TV, etc.), and of course, the "stuff" you eat, all in conjunction with making the "Big Plan" (i.e., I Will Always Eat Correctly) really, really works.I read this book, applied the AVRT to my life, and the weight has just melted off.The best part?I did not diet nor will I ever again. Now that I can recognize the addictive voice which screams for more food, especially when I don't need it, I know that I will never have to struggle with fatness again.I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A different point of view on the concept of "Food Addiction"
This book turns the 12 step recovery movement as applied to overeaters on it's head. The Trimpey's are most known for their opposition to Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12 step programs; Overeater's Anonymous is the same program used in AA, only applied to "food addiction".The first step of Overeater's Anonymous is to admit that one is "powerless" over his/her compulsion to overeat; that overeating is a lifelong "disease" that will never be cured. Only by working the 12 step program and attending meetings for life can anyone begin to approach "recovery".The Trimpey's argue that this belief system is irrational and ultimately unhelpful to the overeater. The book outlines some key "Philosophy of Fatness" (irrational beliefs) that helps to keep us overeaters fat. Some of these beliefs are the following:5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Approach for an Age-old problem
The Trimpeys aren't going to be popular among all the myriad therapists, treatment centers, fat farms, diet gurus and "experts" like Susan Powter and Richard Simmons who are making fortunes at the expense of desperate dieters. What this book manages to so ably point out is that every person who has successfully lost weight and kept it off permanently did so from a Big Plan - NOT through the "support" of any group such as Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous or the like.It was an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE backed up by individual effort and initiative. The Trimpeys help the reader find that motivation and reinforce the will to recover from binge eating by recognizing and seeing through the Voice of Fatness. While there are no easy answers or magic pills, there IS a rational choice which we can learn to make for ourselves.By debunking the irrational beliefs surrounding compulsive eating, discarding worthless theories about the origins of our problems, and directly confronting that internal voice masquerading as our own mind we can triumph over the whole kit and kaboodle. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good to get you started
I bought this book to help my boyfriend manage his diabetes better. There are several recipes in here, but I was a little disappointed that there weren't more meal/main course options. Its great if you're primarily looking for desserts, appetizers, etc to serve, but I feel very limited with the options for a main course.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this cookbook!
I have been usings Busy People's Diabetic Cookbook for several months. This Cookbook has a lot of Breakfast ideas, and delicious drink smoothies that I find very helpful to keep me going on a good, healthy diet. It also has a lot of other delicious entree ideas that are easy to make. My kids love the Super Fruity Strawberry Milk Shakes, and when made, and poured into a tall glass, it looks like a special shake straight from the malt shop! It's delicious. The Cream of Chicken & Brocolli Soup was delcious, as well as the Parmesan Potatoes. The best part of this cookbook is that the recipies are easy to make, and none of them take over 30 minutes to cook, including the preparation time. I am surprised that I can cook a good meal in a short amount of time, and it be delicious. The menu idea suggestions that Dawn adds for each recipie have been a great help to planning an entire meal. I enjoyed the Diabetic Busy People's Cookbook so much that I bought 3 more of the other Busy People's Cookbooks. This money was well spent. Each cookbook interacts with the others to help plan meals (if you need ideas and suggestions). These cookbooks are perfect for busy Mom's! I use them all to help plan weekly meals. I have lost 10 pounds already by changing my diet, and using Dawn's recipies. I am borderline diabetic, and if I can keep up with a weekly meal plan with some of these recipies -- my health is going to improve tremendously. I'd love to see Dawn come up with a cookbook for eating for one or two - some way to help me with breakfast and lunch ideas for (one person) that I would cook while the kids are at school, and my husband is at work. It would be great to have all Dawn's recipies on a CD to help make grocery shopping lists easier to handle, too. ... Read more

In "Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" the authors dedicate the first two chapters to providing a basic understanding of diabetes. The first chapter discusses diabetes with a slant toward helping a child understand it.The second one is from the perspective of what the adult parent needs to know.5-0 out of 5 stars Answer to a Mom's Prayer
I was delighted to read about this cookbook in my local newspaper and ran out to buy a copy right away. 4-0 out of 5 stars Even Little Kids Get Diabetes
This is a very nice book for smaller children. I enjoyed reading this to my 2 year old. There are a few things that have changed since it was published in 1991. Children can now have some candy, ice cream and cake on special occasions and if it's sugar free or low on carbs. But overall this book was a nice way to introduce my child to the understanding that he is not alone and that there are other children who get diabetes.

4-0 out of 5 stars DFM review
We've purchased this book as part of an information package that we give to children who are newly diagnosed. Some of the issues are clearly outdated (for example, the child with DM having to eat the cake without icing whereas now we know that, using carbohydrate counting, this is not necessarily the case). There are positive aspects to the book-reinforcement that there are "special things" that you have to do to stay healthy-blood glucose checks, insulin injections etc... but above all, "you're (still)a regular kid." The book also touches on parental grief/anger at the disease, sibling jealousy, a child's perspective that diabetes means you'll "die" becauseof the first syllable of the word, "diabetes." In the eyes of our office staff, the positive aspects of this book outweigh the negative or "outdated" material.Maybe a revised edition or sequel could have info on the insulin pump!

My daughter now age 3, absolutely loves this book. She treasures it more than any others. It's true that it does have some outdated material such as not being able to eat certain things, but for her that worked out fine for me anyway because of her multiple food allergies so shes' still limited on what she can have even if it's not because of her diabetes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, delicious recipes, even if you don't have diabetes
Regardless of whether you have diabetes or not, this is an excellent cookbook with healthy, easy and fairly quick recipes. In most other cookbooks, you mark the recipes that you like - in this book, they are ALL good! I haven't found one that we wouldn't want to make again, and we cook a lot out of books like Cooking Light and Jacques Pepin. This is our new favorite. I bought 10 more books to give to family and friends as inexpensive gifts. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you have diabetes or cook for someone with diabetes, and you have a busy life, this cookbook will solve several problems for you. All 200 recipes follow the low-fat, high-fiber, moderate-protein guidelines, and all can be prepared in 30 minutes or less with familiar ingredients from your pantry or supermarket. These recipes are tasty, providing satisfying, healthy eating for the whole family, not just the person with diabetes--no more separate meals. Imagine a breakfast of Asian Omelet with Crab (like egg foo yong without the fat and salt), Breakfast Burrito (10 minutes to prepare), or Potato Pancakes (baked instead of fried). Lunches include a variety of soups, sandwiches, and salads. Dinners emphasize pasta, seafood, poultry, and lean meats, sometimes with an ethnic flair, such as Mushroom Ravioli, Spicy Halibut Fillets with Pineapple, Sausage and Mushroom Pizza (only 16 percent fat), Shrimp Fajitas, Cajun Grilled Chicken on Yellow Rice and Peas, and Turkey Sloppy Joes. Nutritional breakdown is provided (calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, cholesterol, sodium), along with exchange information. Designed to feed one to four people, the book includes savory dishes for all meals, plus exchange lists, answers to medical questions, and two weeks of menus (for both 1,200- and 1,800-calorie daily allowances). 5-0 out of 5 stars So Sensible
The recipes are excellent and the best of all, none of the recipes call for exotic ingredients that I could only buy at a specialty store.Everything I can just open my cubbord and pull existing ingredients out to use in these delicious meals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Joslin Diabetes Quick & Easy Cookbook
This book has become my bible in planning meals. The menus for 2 weeks are well put together, easy to use, easy to make shopping lists from and realistic for 2 people. The recipes are tasty, easy to understand and follow. For newly diagnosed diabetics, this is a fearless way to plan your eating-for-life. Amazingly, the amount of food presented in the daily the meal plans is almost more than one can eat!The index, appendicies of Q & A, exchange lists and other helps present even more information.Diane Lichtenstein ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR ALL AGES!
Great book!I purchased this book because I have a student who was recently diagnosed with diabetes.I wanted the class to understand what their classmate was going through and to answer any questions they may have.I truly believe that educating children on issue such as this will help enhance their lives as well as the child who is experiencing it first hand. Thanks Kim, for a wonderful book for all ages!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Send to School!
My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three years ago. Every year since, I've asked her teachers to let her read this book to the class at the beginning of the year. This is a great tool for the other children tounderstand what Diabetes is, why my daughter gets special snacks at specialtimes, but most importantly it lets them know that she is just like everyother kid. Having Diabetes is hard enough on children without the addedstress it can cause at school. I encourage all parents who are in myposition to make this book a part of your school education efforts. Itshouldn't replace the training materials and meetings, but addresses theoften overlooked element of how to help the child with Diabetes fit intothe classroom. ... Read more
