5-0 out of 5 stars Get your life back
Hundreds of folks are getting their lives back because of this book. I know, because I own a very active, free Yahoo! message board for all non-dieters. My members come in having read a variety of books on non-dieting. Many of them love to refer to "OO" when sharing their recovery. I am happy to give this book a five star review. -- Linda Moran

5-0 out of 5 stars challenging book
This is the book that had the most deep impact on my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only approach that works in the longrun.
About 8-9 years ago I used this approach to finally establish a healthy relationship to my body and food after years of painful, damaging, obsessive dieting and disordered eating that had taken over my life.Although the approach is scary at first, it's the only one that has ever worked for me.Following yet another diet only perpetuates the underlying problems with food/eating.Although I was panicked at first about gaining weight when all food was allowed, after about a year I was 10-15 pounds lighter than I'd been when I was constantly dieting.I was suprised to find that when I truly listened to and respected my body's hunger and normalized my relationship with food, my body settled into a healthy, lower weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for quick perusal and management
I met Sherri Shafer at UCSF, and this book is an extension of the great work that UCSF does for the diabetic community. It is light reading, but detailed enough to get you started if you've been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The focus is on explaining how Diabetes affects your body, and gives you information about how nutrition and exercise are a huge factor in managing your blood sugar. There are helpful management tips, food information, and a "detailed enough" description of foods and the properties you're looking for to manage various aspects of your diet.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great resource book but lacks depth
If you are looking for a good book on what Type 2 diabetes is about then this book is the one for you.As a new to diabetes patient I was looking for some real tips and depth on how to manage my eating and diet. This book did not offer anything new that you could not find in other sources or the internet.5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
This is a fantastic book. I highly recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and also for anyone living with someone with diabetes. What is most refreshing about the book is that it is really a practical guide for healthy living. It clearly explains the interactions of food and exercise and alcohol and overall lifestyle, and how these components work together to affect blood sugar. It also answers questions related to diabetes in specific populations--kids, pregnant women, and older people. With so much information out there promoting fad diets and supplements, it is great to have a resource like this to debunk the myths and give the straight story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a nice surprise
I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book.My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system. The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done. I have decided to buy her a copy of her own. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Co-author Dr. Vernon needs a new approach...
...to dieting and to writing. As a previous reviewer alluded to, this book would have been much better had Dr. Atkins been able to finish himself. However, what we are left with is a co-author MD who's personality is as cold as ice; not to mention condescending and disrespectful. This shines through in the tone of the writing. Furthermore, how can we take diet advice from someone who is obese herself? There are plenty of other well-written low-carb diet books.Try another.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener on Blood Sugar Disorders

2-0 out of 5 stars Moderation is key
This book, like the Atkins approach in general, has part of the picture, but is certainly incomplete.Moderation, not virtual elimination, of carbohydrates, when paired with lean protein, plenty of omega 3 (fish and flax oils), and monounsaturated oils (like olive oil), has been shown to be the healthiest diet (a Mediterranian type diet). The Atkins approach does not advocate moderation, instead prefering to vilify an entire necessary macronutrient - carbohydrates!Certainly the old fashioned 1980's style high carb low fat diets were a disaster, and brought out diabetes in susceptible people - but the answer is balance - good quality, naturally high fiber carbs, paired with protein and healthy fat - not virtual elimination of carbs.Inadequate carbohydrate intake can lead to fatigue and reluctance to exercise.Dr. Vernon herself continues to struggle with her weight, despite following the Atkins approach. Most Americans will initially lose weight when starting on Atkins because most eat FAR too many carbs. But they also eat too much saturated fat (animal and dairy fat, for the most part), which has been show to worsen insulin problems and diabetes, and aggravate cholesterol and artery inflammation, worsening risk of heart disease and stroke.Atkins addresses one of the these culprits (excess sugar), but not the other (excess saturated fat).Americans need to cut down on these, and then add more good fats (fish, nuts, olive oil, avacado), lean protein (to cut down on saturated fat), and not be afraid of healthy carbs in the form of whole fruits (not juice), vegetables, and whole grains (not white bread or sugary low fiber cereal). That, plus watching the calories, and daily exercise (at least 30 " of moderate cardio, five days a week), and diabetes will DRAMATICALLY improve.Try it and see! Health is not just about weight - its about healthy body fat and muscle ratios, and what is going on inside your body - in your arteries, your brain, etc.The studies all support healthy balance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book, even for the non-diabetic
My father has type II diabetes.I bought this book for him, but ended up reading it myself.I am not diabetic, but am at risk of developing it.This book is an interesting read, and has a wondeful meal plan and recipes.I have decided to start eating the way she describes, The Mediterranean way, just because it's a healthy way to live. It's just a bonus for me that it also helps prevent and control "the other diabetes".Get this book....it's fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago.I have read a number of books on the subject. What I like about this book is that it talks about real food. The dessert recipes are made with real sugar. They are low sugar of course, but a number of the recipes can be fed to company. The book also confirmed something I had recently noticed. If I eat less fat, I can eat more carbohydrates with less effect on my blood sugar.I believe this book would be a great place to start for the newly diagnosed, but it is also a great review book that includes a lot of the newest ideas and theories. In addition, it has the basic understanding that food is good and good food is even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only One You Need
Iadd my recommendation to the earlier one that you can save yourself lots of time and money by just buying this book. I recommend the hard-back version as yourcopy will get lots of use around the kitchen.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "I Hate To Exercise Book" by Charlotte Hayes
Charlotte Hayes presents the virtues and importance of exercise in a very thorough yet simplified format. The primary theme she emphasizes is to "stay active". Forget the quick fix solution and make a commitment to a long term lifestyle change. Lifestyle changes are paramount to staying fit, not strenuous exertion. She offers practical suggestions for incorporating exercise into day to day activities. Set achievable goals and build on them. The basic principals of exercise are the solution to most health problems. An extremely well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Diabetic's Look At The Book
Since I am diabetic and overweight I have tried all the classic diabetic recipes and found them all to be tasteless and time consuming to prepare.Ms. Lund's recipes use products you have on hand and the resulting meal has both taste and is quick to prepare. It is important to me that I don't have to spent hours preparing it and it satisfies my hunger for things I shouldn't have.I highly recommend the book to anyone who is diabetic and especially those who are classed as "border-line" diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with great recipes and techniques!
My husband and I aren't diabetic, but we both need to lose weight. We didn't have much success with any of the brand-name diets, so we went to a registered dietician who put us on a diabetic exchange diet.Initially we had a hard time sticking to it, because it was hard to figure out ways to make food tasty with limited fat and starch intake, not to mention trying to figure out correct portion sizes to fit our exchanges.5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Food's Quick & Easy Diabetic Cooking

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible
I can't begin to describe my difficulties of growing into the body I am going to have as a woman, but I don't have to because Jessica did it for it for me. There are very few ways to describe how it feels to read "Do I look fat in this?" except to say it's freeing. As I turned the pages I would eat up every word & little by little i could breathe easier.
5-0 out of 5 stars Genuine connection heals.
I have been a psychotherapist for about as long as Jessica has been on the planet and a writer longer than that. From both of these vantage points I applaud this excellent book. Most of all, Jessica is honest and vulnerable in what she has to share and teach and it is that kind of genuine connection that really helps people heal. Buy 2 copies; you'll want to give one away.

4-0 out of 5 stars To the point
This book cuts through a lot of the nonsense making flax and it's benefits clearly understood. I like the fact that I could open the book at any page and just begin reading. I'm certainly a Flax fan now!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This really is the Definitive Guide
This book is great. Hard to believe from a nutrition book, but this one becomes a pager turner. Once I started reading about all the great benefits of flax, I just wanted to find out about everything it has to offer. This book is full of great research, but you don't have to be a doctor to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and full of hope
Sheryle writes a creative, heart-rending story of her battle with anorexia and bulimia and the spiritual revelation that saved her life. She transparently shares her jagged journey from bondage to freedom in a way that those who struggle with this frightening disorder will identify with. Her questions for journaling are as good as hours of therapy. Once I started reading, I could hardly put it down. I heartily recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book your doctor can learn from
As a hypoglycemic, I am trying to find out what I can do to keep my blood sugar level.Dr. Murray provides the reader with more suggestions than just eating right and exercising. The addition of supplements is very helpful. He also educates on the connection between hypoglycemia and diabetes. This is important for hypolycemics to know since it is very possible for this condition to turn into diabetes.5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, clear and to the point!!!!
I have low blood sugar and throughout the past few years I have read many books on the subject of sugar. In fact tonight I was reading; The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program. As I was reading this book I was getting frustrated at how wordy the book was and how wordy the other books had been that I had read before. The book by Michael T. Murray is clear and to the point. It's an easy read but invaluable for the information it conveys. It is definitely my favorite book and I have been recommending and purchasing it for friends and family for years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be Updated with more emphasis on Fibre content !
1996 is almost light years away from all the new nutrient info available today. I have both encyclopedias that Dr. Murray has authored, & they are more recently published than this book. ... Read more
