2-0 out of 5 stars Wish there had been more details about recovery
This book was in-depth history of her Eating Disorder (140 pages) and a short (40 pages) account of what happened to her during the start of recovery. She talked briefly about therapy. She talked very little about what the recovery felt like and the emotional and physical challenges she faced during recovery. I wish the book had in-depth details about the start of her recovery process, not just the years she suffered. Not a good recovery resource, but it was interesting and honest.Suffering from an Eating Disorder is the worst!

5-0 out of 5 stars courageous and inspirational!
i too suffer from extreme bulimia; i found jocelyn's book to be honest, forthright, and from the heart, and admire her courage in sharing the intimate details of her journey.it was also interestingly written -- i couldn't put it down
5-0 out of 5 stars YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
This is a fabulous, well-written story about the reality of bulimia.I love that the author was so descriptive in both her internal and external struggles while learning to deal with this illness.I also was relieved to find a book that tells the story of a woman with long-term bulimia. She struggled with this illness for many years, and she was still able to work through what she needed to in order to get better. This story describes all the feelings and experiences that go with bulimia, and it is such a wonderful, hope-filled but realistic portrayal of what is going on out there.I was struggling with my illness when I read this book, and it let me know that I was not alone and gave me courage to reach out and get the help I needed because I could see how I viewed Jocelyn for going through her process and I admired that. This is a wonderful, wonderful story. ... This book encourages victimhood. We are overweight because we live in a man's world. So carry around a feed-bag and soothe your anger.
5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver
How to begin? This book is a sanity saver for me.I am coming out of the world of bingeing/restriction/compulsive overeating. Finally, I am on my way to a healthy relationship with food. And no, I haven't gained tons of weight in the legalization phase... about 6 pounds maybe if that... now, the scale is going down as I remind myself that I can eat what I want and when and eat more often from stomach hunger... but using mouth hunger when I need to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
This book is BRILLIANTLY conceived. It isn't about losing the weight first; it's about learning to love yourself first and unconditionally. What comes after that is your whole LIFE.The diet industry has convinced us that when you lose the weight, then you can/will love yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Based on solid principles
In general, I avoid the "diet and supplement" solutions to all health problems. 1-0 out of 5 stars Sheeplike followers of the drug-company bought ADA
There's an old vaudeville joke: "Patient: Doctor, doctor! It hurts whenever I do THIS. Doctor: Well, don't DO THAT!"3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
There is nothing special in this book for Diabetes. It just suggests moderation dietary intake following of famous soon to be changed food pyramid with emphasis on eating heavy starch. Where soon after my brother eats potato his blood sugar level goes through the sky. There are nice suggested meal plans but and data about foods. I was expecting more stringer diet I can take it but I am concerned like "eat fat loose fat diet ".

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Nutritional Information
The authors have the nutritional values calculated for as many as 20 servings yet fail to provide the serving sizes. They have to figure out the size of a serving to calculate the information, so why not include that with the recipe so we, who must count our carbohydrates for insulin purposes for example, don't have to dirty dishes to dish out the entire crock pot. There are authors out there who care enough about their readers to provide this information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for up-to-date, excellent information, READ THIS BOOK!
What a wealth of information! This is a book you'll read and keep, because you'll want to refer to it again and again. It's worth more than every penny you spend on it!

3-0 out of 5 stars more conceptual and technical than data oriented
The book tends to dwell on insignificant, technical matters. Specific data on specific foods is vague and sketchy. A diet book, to be five star, should provide data for at least two levels of difficulty (i.e. a fast paced diet and a moderately paced diet). For each level, at least 200 or 300 common foods should be rated. Portion sizes should be specified. This book covers all the research but does not provide near enough data on specific foods for someone that is dieting. To top it off, the author has an irritating habit rephrasing just about everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE
THIS BOOK PROVIDES A VERY DETAILED OUTLINE OF WHAT THE METABOLIC SYNDROME IS AND EXACTLY HOW IT WREAKS HAVOC ON YOUR HEALTH, IT HAS A VERY CLEAR SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION ON THE METABOLIC PROCESSES OF INSULIN AND ITS REACTION WITH OTHER HORMONES, BASED PRIMARILY ON WHAT YOU EAT. THE PROGRAM OUTLINES A PLAN OF SUPPLEMENTS, EXERCISE, AND DIET. I HAVE BEEN ON THE PROGRAM A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AND MY BLOOD SUGARS HAVE DROPPED SO MUCH THAT I HAD TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MEDICATION I WAS TAKING. THE DIET BASICALLY CALLS FOR YOU TO GIVE UP SODA, DESERTS, SUGAR, AND TO FOCUS ON WHOLE GRAINS VEGETABLES AND LEAN PROTEIN AND HEALTHY FATS, THIS INFORMATION AND THE EXCELLENT SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS REALLY HELPED TO MOTIVATE ME TO GIVE IT A TRY. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Best book out of 3 that I bought
I bought 3 books when I was diagnosed with Gestational diabetes: 101 tips for Healthy Pregnancy w/ Gestational diabetes, Gestational Diabetes: what to Expect & this one. This one was the best I thought. It had a real food guide (my main questions were how do I control my diabetes with diet), the others just wouldn't come out & say "eat this" "don't eat that". Plus the author writes to the women with the diabetes, very direct & personable. I am giving this book to my midwife so she can share it with her patients instead of just Gestational Diabetes: What to Expect.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good food guide
When you have Gestational Diabetes, you are basically going to find all your information from your Doctor and Diabetic Counseling, there really isn't any one book that tells you anything more than you already know.I thought this books Chapter 5 on Food, Food, Food was helpful. It allowed me to make up my own menus following their guidelines on what to eat.It was pretty much the same guidelines I got from my nutritionist but my nutrionist never gave me as many choices.I would recommend this book to someone with Gestational Diabetes, because of that chapter, and it does give the same information as your Doctor.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is not worth a dime.
The book does not give you any more information than your diabetic counselor will. There is more filler in this book that is unrelated to gestational diabetes. There also is some contradiction in it as well. Don't buy it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and straightforward
A direct approach, with illustrative examples, to creating a protocol to control your blood sugars. It's written in simple language and well organized, providing a step by step approach to figuring out your basal rates, insulin sensitivity, and carb ratios.Provides insights into the many, many, many (many, many, many) factors that can influence your blood sugars.Well thought out and presented graphs illustrate the effects of insulin.Simple tables illustrate averages for basal rates, boluses, carb rations and sensitivity, offering a good starting place for divining your own settings. Some simple tables of carb content and glycemic indexes. An interesting table for calculating the effect of exercise on blood sugar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
This great book shares the experience and knowledge the author, Gary Scheiner, has. The author is diabetic too and he knows the questions, doubts, and afflictions that we have. He explains clearly without losing the technical approach. Gary explains in detail diabetes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to diabetes self-care
This book is a great overview of the basics on how to deal with using insulin. At the same time, there are a lot of individualized issues for staying out of trouble that each diabetic learns with time for him/herself that the book doesn't quite get to. With the upcoming availability of continuous sensors for blood sugar monitoring in conjunction with fingerstick testing, this field is going soon to expand into a whole new world of improved management that will require the next edition. I'd recommend this edition right now, though, for a thorough start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is sometimes hard to take
Yes, this book claims that eating disorders are rooted in sinful behavior. Now don't let this put you off. The author does at no point condemn those suffering from anorexia, bulimia, over-eating etc. Quite contrary, Elyse Fitzpatrick's way of approaching God's truth (the only Truth for any Christian) is understanding, warm and supportive. Her style is easy-to-read and backed with examples from her own life. Still, no author can change the truth about eating disorders. They are sin. Or does anyone seriously think that starving God's temple and idolizing food are in line with God's will? I fully agree that this truth is hard to take once you have to realize your share in your behaiour, but Fitzpatrick doesn't leave the reader at this point. She is not the one with the raised index finger making the reader feel bad about herself or himself. Again, she does the opposite by showing how we need to rely on Christ to fight this sinful behavior, by showing what thoughts and mechanisms lead to eating disorders and how we can face them with our hearts turned to the Lord. Don't be afraid to read this book because you might feel you are just being told that it is all your fault and to get on with life.Instead, be ready to meet a sometimes painful truth and an answer full of hope and truth. And let me add: this book gives excellent advice for how to cope in everyday life. Knowing that Christ is the answer is one thing, but Fitzpatrick provides practical advice for the compulsions and urges we need to fight every single day. Has this book cured me from my ED? No. It still is a fight. But in contrast to the time before I read the book, I am now ready and well-equipped for the fight and I grow more successful every day.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
I was really disappointed with this book. had thought the title would mean it would give more practical advice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Christian dogma, little authoritative guidance
Like her fellow misguided evangelical Larry Crabbe, this woman quickly puts the label of "sin" on problems that are more complex.Being told that they are sinners who need to repent is the last thing that people who are struggling with eating disorders need to hear.I think it is this belief about themselves that drives many of them to eating disorders in the first place. The book just pushes evangelical Christian dogma without seeking a proper understanding of the issues it discusses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Life Vest Thrown Into A Stormy Ocean
With society placing the stress it does on females being physically thin, I think the numbers this book quotes for the totals of US women with serious eating disorders is, if anything, on the low side. I along with virtually every woman I know has at one time or another had what amounts to an eating disorder and in a few cases, had them to a serious extent. With body image being as important as it is, particularly with teenage girls, I'm pessimistic that this book or anything else can do more than try to spur the one suffering from this insidious disease to WANT to do something about her affliction. I read this book because I was curious to see if things have gotten any better in the last decade as far as treatment of eating disorders goes, and also in the level of collective recognition among young women that a disorder is there in their own lives. From what I read here, I'd say the answer to both is no. On the positive side, this book did one of the better examples of addressing this life-threatening situation and if it can be gotten to the right hands, it could truthfully save some lives that might be in danger right at this very moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - the authors have an in depth view of the disease
Dying to be Thin helped me in ways beyond measure. I knew that a lot of what I was doing to my body was destructive, but only after reading the book did I want to seek help to end the disease- or try to at least. A big thank you and hugs to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight for the intelligent reader
Loved this book, I have not read the author's first book, but that did not present any problems.Susan Nolen-Hoeksema offers some very plausible reasons for overeating/drinking in women. Her theories make sense and while I know quite well that there is no "magic pill" for this problem, I feel the info she offers gives me some tools to understand the problem and how I can better help myself. My one criticism of the book would be that I don't recollect any suggestions that the reader supplement the book by working with a psychotherapist trained in women's disorders. For most women, this would be crucial to the healing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Women Who Suffer In Silence
I love the fact that this book was written and done so well. This subject is very dear to me - as I am a product of a family of women who suffered from this toxic triangle. The legacy was simply passed down from generation to generation. It was a hard thing to watch - and was a major reason why I chose to be a therapist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff from a Great Psychologist
When I saw that Susan Nolen-Hoeksema had a new book out, I had to take a look.Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema is well known to me from studying the biology and psychology of depression about ten years ago.
