5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get
For me , it was really a very good choice to get this book, and I recommend it to averyone who has to follow a special diet for diabetic, and also anyone who want to learn to eatbetter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info and recipes made with real food
I was impressed with the extent of information about diabetes and cooking that preceeded all of the recipes. What a great resource this has turned out to be for me. I have enjoyed several of the recipes very much and was especially pleased to find that they include more nutritional analysis than other cookbooks I have (including saturated fat, sugars and fibre). Lots of recipes low in fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol and lots of real, whole food instead of processed foods and chemicals. I think this book was worth every cent and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up from me and my mom
My mother loves it and I love it too. I first ordered this book as a gift for my mother who has type 2 diabetes. After enjoying the recipes that she made, I went ahead and picked up a copy for myself at the local store seeing as I can use a good dose of healthy eating. Of the main dishes we tried, I found the servings to be quite filling and the recipes were easy enough to make. I also found the sections about diabetes to be very helpful and easy to understand. Hopefully I'll be able to avoid getting diabetes like my mom by following the advice of cookbooks like this. Definitely gets a thumbs up from us. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Live w/ Hypo
If any of you were the same as me you learned out that you had hypo and the doctor said it's a lot like diabetes so go get a diabetes book and follow the diet. I think the medical field is ill informed about hypo and could take a good lesson from this book. Hypo is a complicated disorder and until you know a lot about it it is hard to control. Hypo for Dummies gives you that knowledge you need. Keep in mind that the writers are practicing eastern medicine physicians, so some things they offer a regular physician of western medicine might not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hypoglycemia Information From A Non-Diabetic Perspective
After much searching for a book that would focus in on hypoglycemia, I found Chow & Chow's book.Normally, I'm not big on the dummies series however, this particular book covers a wide range of information from diagnosis (and confirmation that you're not crazy) to helpful ways to "help" yourself combat the ups and downs of the rollercoaster ride.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book!
I read this book as a refresher and cannot imagine a more in-depth explanation of hypoglycemia and how to deal with it--emotionally and physically for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than 5,000 menu items are organized by establishment name
Whether you have diabetes or just wish to make healthier choices in restaurants, guide to healthy restaurant eating appears in its third updated edition of Guide To Healthy Restaurant Eating by Hope S. Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDE, BC-ADM, to cover all the options, even in such unhealthy establishments as chain restaurants. More than 5,000 menu items are organized by establishment name, making it easy to quickly access nutritional information and exchange options for specialty beverages, salads, and even donuts and bagels. Websites, nutrition information, overviews of healthier food choices, and plenty of facts make this an essential guide for any regular restaurant goer who would make better choices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helps you make good choices while eating out
This book lists more than 5,000 food items at 60 major chain restaurants (both fast food and sit-down).I've found it to include even the most recent menu additions of my favorite restaurants. It gives clear, concise, easy-to-read nutritional information and food exchange counts.I use this book constantly, and also highly recommend "The Complete Guide to Convenience Food Counts" by Lea Ann Holzmeister (great for meal planning & supermarket trips). These two books put together contain virtually every item of food I look for, and I recommend both without reservation to anyone on a food exchange diet plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for healthy restaurant eating.
This is an excellent guide for helping you eat healthy food at restaurants. The restaurants listed are many of the major chain restaurants, especially fast foods. In addition to hamburgers and pizza, Denny's and Baker's Square are included to help you find nutrition information you can use for coffee shops in general.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New
I just received the September 2006 edition, the "latest and greatest" paperback... Nothing New here, plus Amazon charges the list price$7.95... I am sure you can get it at a mega bookstore for less

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
I love, love, love this book!I am only half way through, and all of my questions have already been answered. The rest of the information is just an added bonus to questions that I didn't even know I had yet.I always share my new learnings, and it has helped one of my co-workers to offer her friend advice, who has a newly diagnosed, Type 1 diabetic, son.To be educated on the topic leaves both the diabetic and their support system feeling uplifted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener
This book was a real eye opener for me.I had no idea about some of the topics discussed in most of these chapters. No diet or lifestyle change works over night, and I think that this book helpsexplain that in the simplest way.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, for what it is.
This is the same stuff one finds in the women's magazines at the checkouts or maybe this is where they may have got some of their articles. The "why do you eat" quiz was my favourite part of the book & helpful.I have lent this to other friends & they liked it as well.Evidentlty they don't buy women's magazine .All in all a so-so addition to my library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe for someone with more control!
I didn't find this book very helpful at all, I think it would be more helpful for someone with more control over their eating. For someone who struggles with deeper issues with food however, not very helpful. The suggestions are good, but it's just not that simple for everyone, as much as I tried! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!
When I first looked at this book, I thought there's no way - how can I go without bread, rice, pasta, etc. After thinking about it for a couple of weeks I decided to give it a try.I loved it.I truly never missed the processed foods and surprisingly was never hungry.I feel like my diet is much more nutritionally sound than what I had been eating, and after the first couple of weeks I had pretty much trained myself what and how much to eat.I've lost 18 pounds so far and a lot of it has been the "stubborn belly fat".Couldn't be happier and feel great.I think that as much as following the diet you need to include the exercise, which is talked about in the book. This diet may not be for everyone, but as someone who has been unsuccessful with weight loss, even with exercise, it's been a Godsend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Your Figures for My Figure Just Don't Figure
I was initially very excited to read this book, based upon most of the reviews as well as the preliminary information I read. However, after carefully reading the information, I'm afraid I cannot recommend this book to anyone else in good conscience, due to the issues I point out in the following note, which was e-mailed to the author at the address given in the book (and subsequently returned as "undeliverable," as the e-mail listed in the book is apparently incorrect or no longer working).
5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Works
OK, this is less about the book than it is about the diet.It works.I have tried everything including Atkins and Weight Watchers.I had 15 pounds to lose. When my doctor said elevated blood sugar was the only thing he could find to explain why I wasn't losing the weight, I bought this book. Now, it is NOT an 'eat all you want of certain foods' diet. And sometimes I've been hungry. But it is easy to follow, not the least complicated and there's no measuring (aside from knowing what 3-4 ounces of meat/chicken/fish looks like, and 1/2 cup of fruit/vegetable.)I'm down 14 1/2 pounds. One caviat: since I didn't have a lot of weight to lose (I'm guessing this is the reason) it's taken me awhile. But it's the only thing that has worked.Right now I'm slowly re-introducing grains (bread, brown rice) and the loss continues (this was a problem with Atkins - the minute I ate a dinner roll, the weight came back). It really works. ... Read more

Editorial Review

What makes Claude-Pierre's treatment of anorexia and bulimia revolutionary? Perhaps it's that the astonishingly high success rate of even the most chronic cases at Claude-Pierre's Montreux Clinic (only sufferers near death who have not been helped by doctors and hospitals are admitted) defies the common misconception that eating disorders are incurable. Claude-Pierre has made a personal commitment to dispel this damaging myth. Having cured her own two daughters of anorexia, you might say hers was a vested interest. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secrets Exposed
Author Claude-Pierre explains in layman's terms the mechanics of eating disorders. This greatly helped me to understand the mindset of the sufferer and seriousness of these types of disorders. The book offers a through explanation of symptoms, who is at risk, treatment, advice and support to family and friends of sufferers. In addition, there are some excellent references for reading materials and websites for help and support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saving
All my life I've hated the way my body looked like.I hated my body so much, that by the age of twelve, I just decided to give up on it.This is when a deep depression set in.I began contemplating suicide, cutting myself, and eating for comfort. As the years passed on with self-destructive behaviors, I gained a good amount of weight.By the age of fourteen I weighted 145 lbs.
1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
I found this book to be almost annoying in the level of arrogance the author exuded in her writing. She has absolutely no training in psychology apart from the fact that her daughters struggled with eating disorders. This book did not reveal any new insights or cures.I find it appalling how little training she has in the arena of eating disorders and yet feels qualified to open a clinic and write a book. She does not back any of her statements up with scientific data, and the book seems to be trying to sell her clinic more than inform others on how to help those struggling with eating disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DIP: Simple Guide to better health
I was surprised by the simple straight forward approach to the problems that must be addressed to live well with diabetes. This book contains clear sound approaches to nutrition, life style and overall health issues related to the diabetic condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great praise for this book
After hunting through many diabetic books for a gift for a friend of mine, I finally chose this one.My friend called me immediately and said it was the best gift she had ever received -she had read it backwards and forwards and had even highlighted it.She said it was extremely helpful (she is dealing with her diabetes naturally after experiencing prescription side effects) and is putting it's advice and recipes to use daily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody ought to know
Dr. Kaufman has opened my eyes and given lots of hope to people who thought there was no way out of this horrendous cycle which eventually led to amputation and multiple declines until an early death culminated the misery. She certainly has a heart toward her fellowman to bring to light in such a way that the layman can understand the intricate workings of our bodies and how to properly take care of our health.Three cheers for her and her family and all the compassion they have shown!!!This book should be mandatory reading for all humans.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, low on facts and exploitive
This poorly written and researched book is typical of the "hype" that is continually fed to the American public -- EVERYTHING is a crisis! EVERYTHING (from terrorism to the food we eat) is an epidemic! We are bad, and we need to change our behavior -- FAST, or some terrible disaster will befall us.
5-0 out of 5 stars It will scare the French fries right out of you...
Two months ago I was told by my doc that a recent blood test showed me to be on the edge of diabetes. He suggested that I give up red meat, egg yolks, fried foods and dairy products, and eat more fruits, vegetables and salads, using soy milk for protein, etc. I did so, and last week my test results showed a retreat from the danger zone for blood sugar, and a loss of eight pounds. So I've been told to stay the course with the new eating and add some exercise. I am 60, only five-foot-seven, and weighed 240 pounds when the bad blood was sucked from my arm on June 28th. Although I am in no danger of needing insulin injections soon, as an obese white male of a certain age and sedentary habits, I am at high risk for this terrible disease of diabetes. So I got this book. It is frightening, but well-written, and well-documented, by an M.D. who really knows her stuff. After reading it, I am more afraid for my wife, adult children, and teenage daughter than for myself. If you want a book that might really push you into better eating and more activity by explaining the realities of living with diabetes, get this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies
Very informative, I learned a lot from this book, it is a great guide for NEW diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful resource!
The Diabetic Cookbook for Dummies is a very essential resource for specialized dieters. Every mouth watering recipe listed in this book contains much nutrients and contents suitable for diabetic health watchers. My 87 year old grandfather owns this cookbook, and uses it on a daily basis to prepare meals and satisfy his appetite. Also can be very useful for gourmet chefs making meals in a fancy restaurant. The information content is overwhelming, which is typical of every "Dummies" entry. May overwhelm the casual reader using the book for recreation or last minute cooking preparations. The book is very large and bulky, and not the best choice to carry along with you on a vacation. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.....
Well, I must really be dumb, because the DIABETES COOKBOOK FOR DUMMIES is really loaded with information and very overwhelming. Don't get me wrong, the book is filled with good stuff if you are trying to gain weight, I just think the title is misleading. They should have called it "the encyclopedia of diabetes recipes, meals, menus, hints, trivia, and everything else prepared by someone who knows what you really want to eat" or something like that. I did find dozens of good recipes in this book. I am using THE INSULIN RESISTANCE DIET by Hart and Grossman and the DUMMIES cookbook is loaded with plenty of recipes I can adapt, and some not so adaptable. .Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has helped me overcome my bulimia
I received this book while I was in a mental health treatment center as part of my treatment. The title was dorky so it took alot to get me to pick it up, but when I did I was not sorry. In just the introduction alone I found the description of my disordered thoughts and as I read on I found the sources to my bulimic tendencies that tortured me. Im not done with it yet, but every time I read a chapter and fill in the journal I gain a greater understanding of my obsession with food. I recommend this book to anyone, any age, who has ever been concerned with their weight, whether they are terminally ill or just dieting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Newly revised?
If you are on some kind of Healthy plan and are thinking of using this book to help you plan your eating when you are not at home, think again. The last revision of the book was in 1991 and several of the Restarurants and Brands listed no longer exist. Of those that do, watch out. This book includes listings for menu items which no longer exist, or which were changes within the last few years.5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book!
I found this book to be very helpful in finding the exchanges for various foods.I wish it would have been a bit smaller in actually dimensions (like a paperback book), but other than that it is extremely helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes, Carbohydrate & Calorie Counter
The book is a huge help in planning meals for my husband. It is valuable in helping us eat out and be creative in our menu planning.
4-0 out of 5 stars Common items skipped or impractically described
This book is good except for some common items I use often. For instance I make cornbread often. The listings does not include cornbread at all in the main list. I finally found it in the back under restaurant foods and the portion size is not well described there. The main listing includes corn meal, uncooked.Who would even need that info?Even storebought cornbread mixes show carbs per cup of mix. What good is that? I want to know what a piece of "cooked" cornbread has in it, for heaven's sake! And for cornmeal mush it only shows cornmeal uncooked which is useless. I forget the counts constantly and have to look the same thing up again soon, so the things I use have to be in there and not something I look up on the internet and then remember it forever. That's why I bought a book to begin with. But I'm a country girl at heart, and any book that doesn't deal properly with cornbread is unacceptable, so now I have to buy another book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Fiber information
This would be a great book with a large number of food items analyzed, but it doesn't include the fiber information, something that can be very important to a diabetic since fiber can have a positive effect on blood sugar and cholesterol.I was going to return it, but it isn't worth it, so I just ordered The Complete Book of Food Counts by Corinne T. Netzer which has all the information needed. ... Read more
