5-0 out of 5 stars A variety of recipes and excellent nutrition/exchange info
A good general cookbook with some of the best nutrition exchangeinformation.Searching bookshelves, I've been surprised at how few of thebooks (particularly for diabetics) didn't give nutrition information in anydepth.I have a relative new to diabetes and the food exchanges, countingfat grams, etc. are confusing and difficult--this was almost exactly what Iwanted. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Does not help at all
I actually returned this book because it had very little , if anything, to do with WHY you actually compulsively eat. it did not go into or even explained the psychological factors that influence C.O. all this book talk about is how women's self-image is polluted with diet ads etc, etc. it does not deal at all with how to actually stop, in an effective way.
5-0 out of 5 stars true story
This book is full of good information on why a person overeats. It isn't a book you can read in one evening. It will take some time to read it thoroughly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its not about food
I wish I could say I lost 20 pounds but I haven't but am on the way too. I'm 5'4 and 120 pounds and obsess about food. Although it focused on undereating which to me was very annoying because overeating is more of an epidemic than undereating, yet the authors chose to equate the two. Anyways, this book is a worth read because for once in my life they made me believe that food is not your friend, it is not a panacea, it is just food, and it doesn't solve your problems. For years I have hid in food, now I am mad because I can no longer do so. It was easy, but it didn't work. For the first time in 2 years I cried, I stopped myself, but at least I did it a little. Anyhow, I recommend this book for the sole fact that it broke up my relationship with food, which is very painful but I am no longer a coward. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Quick
My husband was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes last year.It was a shock and I went crazy buying cookbooks on Amazon to help me deal with his new dietary requirements.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...
Unless you live in town or a city, can afford to purchase countless ingredients in Miss Webb's recipes from alternate sources such as health food stores or expensive grocery stores, don't count on finding many ofthese ingredients in your average run-of-the-mill grocery store in a smalltown. These meals may take little time to prepare, but if you're not in ahigher income-bracket and you have a family to feed, you probably won'tlike this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy healthy cooking ideas
This book is true to its title.I loved that it listed some main "healthy" staples at the beginning of the book that everyone should have on hand.I also really liked the easy meal ideas at thebeginning of the book for those nights you need recipes that will usewhatever you have on hand in your cabinets. Some of the main recipes werea little more complicated than I had hoped.Still, overall this was anexcellant choice and I know that I will use it for years to come. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Revolutionart Diet Plan For type 1 and 2 Diabetics
The book, greatest purchase that you can have. It has helped out in the balance of food that can be eaten, it's simple to follow and it even stastes good. I have always had a problem with what to cook for myself, that is the toughest part about a diabetic. With this book you are watching the sugar intake, the acid intake and more. I do wish there were more recipes to choose from that are just as good as these. I want to thank Dr. Young and his wife for doing all the research and providing everyone with facts. I have been a diabetic for 22 years and the change in my food without the acid is unreal to believe. This was a blessing for me. Thank you so much.
4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PLAN
I LOVE this plan. Its an excellent idea and I felt 1000% better after the first three days and then tried to eat something that was not on the plan and was flooded with a headache, and body pains like crazy.

I was newly diagnosed type 1 in June 2005. This is by far the best of all the books I have read. 1-0 out of 5 stars Bible??The book is less then a inch thick!
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!!The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!!Try Prevention The Sugar Solution.I am returning the "bible".What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips.I've tried some of the recipes and they are good.I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.

Editorial Review

If you're aging prematurely, getting fatter, feeling sluggish, and watching your blood pressure and cholesterol sneak upwards, you may have "Syndrome X," claim the authors, who say that up to 60 million North Americans have it. "Syndrome X is primarily a nutritional disease caused by eating the wrong foods," they write. The mysterious-sounding "Syndrome X" refers to a group of health problems including insulin resistance ("the inability to properly deal with dietary carbohydrates such as sugars"), plus at least one additional problem, such as abnormal blood fats (elevated cholesterol or triglycerides), overweight, and/or high blood pressure. Insulin resistance is "a diet-caused hormonal logjam that interferes with your body's ability to efficiently burn the food you eat." According to the authors, you probably have this problem, and if you do, eating processed carbohydrates are the root of it. Pastries, pastas, breakfast cereals, soft drinks--these refined carbos are the enemy. The book warns you that you probably suffer from insulin resistance (please get a blood test instead of relying on the admittedly unscientific questionnaire in the book, which makes everyone suspect who eats cereal or drinks fruit juice). Then the authors jump on the high-protein, low carb bandwagon. You can eat three eggs for breakfast, roast duck for lunch, and salmon for dinner, and snack on chicken slices.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Overeaters
I really appreciate this book. I loved the caring tone and the way the author seemed to reach out and give the reader a hug! I think that so many of the stories and descriptions spoke to my heart about myself and friends that I found myself calling friends or emailing parts of the books so we could talk ideas! This is a gem! Thank you for writing it, Doreen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Doreen !
without giving too many details as it would be too personal, I consider this book a "gift from above"... : it helps people understand WHY they eat too much, and how to get your eating pattern back in control to lead a successful weight loss. Doreen gives plenty of tips, such as affirmations. There is no pretention in her book and it helps people who have been struggling with emotional overeating and who have been victims of abuse, whether the "facts" happened during their childhood or later in life. It's a powerful self-therapy book, highly recommended !

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for emotional eaters
I had never made the connection between my emotions and my eating until I started reading this book. After tolerating abuse from my parents and my husband, I had no idea why I seemed so nice and happy on the outside but one little thing could make me lose it and throw a temper tantrum.By doing the exercises in this book, I began to see how I had been keeping my emotions stuffed and as I released them, I also released the weight.Great book.I highly recommend it for emotional eaters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Time tested
I waited a little over a year to write my review; I wanted to offer solid evidence in favor of this book and approach to losing my disordered eating (binge eating/compulsive overeating in my case). I read this book about 11 months ago and quit dieting after having gained 20 more pounds on my diet last winter (bingeing my way through it). I have been implementing normal eating ever since to the best of my ability. What changes have taken place in my less than perfect attempts to eat normally?
5-0 out of 5 stars A sensible, honest, 'tried and tested' concept.
I've suffered from eating disorders for three years, I'm tired of unsuccessful dieting and eating foods that taste chemical: this book has given me a choice.
5-0 out of 5 stars A revolutionary reminder that we're already "recovered"
Most books under the "self-help" category are misnomers because they are not about the self; they are pontifications by an alleged expert in the field of [fill in your personal struggle], attempting to tell readers how wrong-headed they've become and set them on the road to recovery. Linda Moran's book is a revolutionary reminder that we already have all the "recovery" we need. Conquering food issues forever is a matter of coming to terms with the fact that most humans don't need to be restricted by "a diet." By truly getting in touch with ourselves--all of our physical, emotional and intellectual needs--we can instinctively learn to feed ourselves in thoroughly nourishing and nutritional ways. With a non-diet approach to life we can be satisfied--even happy--with our bodies. In a personable and lucid style of writing, this book gives readers pragmatic insight into psychosocial responses to food, the way culture conditions our eating practices, scientific information on how the body and mind respond to diets, and perhaps most comforting of all, empathic, personal testimonies from the author herself. This is a must-read for anyone who has ever let food get in the way of living life to complete satiety. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, and...
I bought the audio-CD version of this book and I am glad I did; I don't think I would have finished it by reading.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Pep Talk
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING is a solid pep talk.Keith Harrell gives great advice in an enthusiastic manner. The book is rich with examples from the authors personal experience and those of his friends and associates. It certainly does the trick in inspiring the reader, however the material is primarily a rehash of material found in other books. If it is a new or novel approach to life changing steps that you're looking for you won't find it here, however if you are looking for a nice spark to jump start your personal goals then ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING is a solid success. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Recipes are intricate, difficult and call for ingredients that are not "on hand" for the average person, especially a working family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a recently diagnosed diabetic
I have been a diabetic for several years and purchased this book simply to see what it contained.I have found several ideas for myself and a great many items that would be very usefull for a recently diagnosed diabetic who wants to get started cookin good food without haveing to worry about the fact that it ordinary food and not what the usual types of food that the doctors and Neutritionists recommend.
1-0 out of 5 stars Odd ingredients
I didn't like this cookbook because it had odd ingredients.A gourmet cook or someone dying of boredom from regular cooking might enjoy it though. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating and offensive
It seems to me that there is FAR too little focas on the entireity of those who suffer from eatig disorders and self injurous behavior. I do mean suffer, because there is more to the whole picture than hurting themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book holds valuable information.
As I read through the reviews of "The Best Little Girl in the World", I just had to throw in my two cents.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of a read
While I understand that people view this book as setting anorexic standards to the anorexic, I do consider this to be a good book. I think it is important to bear in mind the time period that this was written in (it's a pretty early book on ED considering it was first published in 1979).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes.
I am not a diabetic.I got this book because of the "heart healthy" part of the title. The loaded baked potato soup is wonderful as is the broccoli soup. Those are the only 2 recipes I've tried so far, but they are well worth the price on their own, in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars D & H HEALTHY COOK BOOK
ONE OF THE VERY BEST BY A VERY WELL KNOWN AUTHOR

1-0 out of 5 stars Sugar in almost EVERY recipe.
I was completely disappointed in this book and in fact, threw it in the garbage.I expected to find recipes to supplement my current bland diet, but upon examining this book, I found sugar to be in almost every recipe, including main courses, not to mention the deserts. This would be fine for someone who is simply trying to lose weight, but not for a diabetic.Especially one like me who is Type 2 and needs to strictly control their sugar consumption.I don't feel this author understands diabetic eating nor diabetes itself, as not controlling it properly can result in blindness and loss of limbs.I do not recommend this book for anyone who takes their diabetes seriously. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars HEALTHY CALENDAR OF DIABETIC COOKING
THIS IS THE VERY BEST WAY TO COOK FOR DIABETICS.
5-0 out of 5 stars highly pleased
I received this book in Feb., but started with the first week of recipes. Most of the meals have been good, some have been excellent. They seem to be right in line with low glycemic diet guidelines.Several meals that claim to serve 4 didn't serve 3. I have skipped some meals, but have tried several new herbs and vegs.
