4-0 out of 5 stars A useful guide with some good insights
This book has a wealth of useful information and would be equally useful for people that have had the condition for a period of years or have only just been diagnosed.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I bought this book because I liked the information from Joslin online.I'm a Registered Nurse and have read lots of things on diabetes. This is one of the best books on self care that I've read.It has a wealth of information presented in a readable style

5-0 out of 5 stars overview
The Joslin Guide to Diabetes: A program for Managing Your Diabetes copyright 1995 (may be updated soon?) is a comprehensive easy to use text designed for the person who has become a patient with diabetes. If youbecome familiar with the information in this book you can not only manageyour diabetes better but you can make meetings with your physican morerewarding for yourself and your physician. This book contains lesstechnical information on pathogenesis etc than the outdated (1989) JoslinDiabetes Manual which may still prove valuable to those so inclined. Ihighly recommend this book for diabetics and their families. ... Read more

I grew up in a southern country home where Sweet things where a part of every meal.Probably why I am diabetic.JoAnna Lund won me over with her book," Cooking Healthy With A Man In Mind" where I found her "Banana Split Pie."This is a wonderful and satisfying dessert. Her "Healthy Exchanges Diabetic Dessert Cookbook" is a must for diabetics. These desserts are satisfying and a delight to prepare.Ms. Lund is a master at simplifying cooking using products you normally find in the cupboard and around the kitchen.I am a big fan of her style of cooking.I recommend all diabetics consider this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great &Compact
This is an excellent book by a true expert. Packed with information on all aspects of exercising to maintain control of diabetes. Like others (Dr. Steven Blair of Cooper Institute in Dallas), Dr. Colberg believes that the key is to get moving and exercising. If the pounds come off or not is a secondary concern. If you have to choose between dieting and exercising, pick the latter every time! Also appreciated that Professor Colberg has written the book in low-cost paperback format.

4-0 out of 5 stars The info on this tape can be a lifesaver for food addicts
Clearly, the previous reader's review was written by someone who has never experienced food addiction."Exercise and diet" ?That's the same as telling an alcoholic to get ahold of themselves and control theirdrinking.Food addiction is real, and the hell of it kills many peopleevery year.Janet Greeson was one of the first pioneers of facing foodaddiction and promoting the healing necessary for wholeness, through the 12Steps.If you're concerned about you possibly being a food addict (if youthink you are, you most likely are...denial can keep you sick and unaware)get this tape, or better yet one of Janet's books. It may be the firsttime you see hope in your future.I am living proof of recovery.Godhealed me, but I believeHe worked through many different ways, Janet'sprogram being one of them.Take care, start recovering, because you AREworth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Load of ****
I've listened to all sorts of weight loss topics and this is by far the craziest thing I've heard.Don't waste your money or the time it takes to listen to this.Attend meetings, exercise and eat a balanced diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars life saving
When I first read Janet's book,I was in the terrible throws of bulemia. Her book opened my eyes to wanting to go in to recovery and into her program.I had tried many other courses, non of them worked and all that was done was Iwas put in mental wards,[people with eating disorders are crazy youknow!!!]and got worst instead of better.I own my life to Janet,my recoveryhas not been perfect and yet I'm still here....She is an angel here onearth with us,love you Janet. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Geared heavily toward eating disorders and weight issues
If you or a loved one have an eating disorder or weight issue, this is the book for you.If you don't, but you suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) or another form of crushing insecurity about your appearance which is unrelated to weight, you may wish to look at some of the other titles on the subject. While Ms. Maine does a nice job of describing the root causes (media, culture, etc.) of women loathing their own bodies, and makes an excellent case for a pro-women revolt of some sort, the classic title on that subject, "the Beauty Myth," by Naomi Wolf, goes into much greater depth on the subject.Either one, however, would be a great book to share with any unsympathetic men in your life, but the Beauty Myth is much more comprehensive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Society's Problem...Made Worse by Men... Just as Bad Over 50
Thank you for writing this book!I have struggled with compulsive eating (although I would not call it that, this book does) for most of my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Body Myth
This book very clearly and concisely explains why women in society are increasingly pressurised by the media to conform to a very narrow definition of feminine beauty. It is well-written and has excellent advice on how to counter the messages a woman is not considered a woman unless she is white, heterosexual and middle-class.The book does not blame women for feeling insecure but holds the media and society responsible. The authors argue that women are in fact diverse and they all come in different shapes, sizes and ethnicities. It is positive and includes some cases studies. This book is different in that it focuses on adult and mature women. Highly recommended and well worth the purchase price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best beginniers guide to diabetes
Easy to understand, but very repetative and specific to the authors mother. Leaves many questions unanswered for the new diabetic but might make a good adjunct to some solid teaching materials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting!
I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and this book was very helpful of helping me understand the form diadetes I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very simple explanations & guidelines for standards of care
Phyllis Barrier has over 25 years experience as a nutritionist and diabetes educator: her background lends to Type 2 Diabetes For Beginners: an especially important guide considering that most Type 2 diabetics receive the news later in life, long after habits are established. From meal planning and pre-diabetes diagnosis and indicators to blood sugar monitoring and weight loss, chapters provide very simple explanations and guidelines for standards of care. The simple approach allows the newly diagnosed to readily understand the myriad of concerns affecting the diabetic: Type 2 Diabetes For Beginners should thus be the first self-help handbook given to the new diabetic upon diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that easily catapults you into the next level!
I found Leslie's book accidentally a year ago in an airport bookstore.I had no idea what the book was about, only that I was burned out working in a small job in a toxic work environment. It was so inexpensive, I bought it.When I began to sift through it, I wondered how these little simple worksheets would be able to do anything like the cover promised - rekindling the passion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book
Without a doubt this book has changed my life for the better. I have gone from deadend job to deadend job for the past 15 years now, but while reading this book it was like the fog finally lifted. I realized I needed to find the job I loved, not the job that simply paid the bills. Now I am on my way - finally. The exercises seem simple and I really didn't see how they would help me, but they did. They get right to the point and you discover things you didn't even know were an issue for you. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is in this situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm & Energizing Antidote for Today's Busy Women
Leslie Godwin's advice will hit home for so many of today's women, and, I believe, inspire them all. With case studies, e-mails, and lessons from a variety of women of different ages and in different careers, Leslie shows how to deal with the burnout that so many of us experience in different phases of life. From parenting issues to workplace challenges, there are many parts of the book that may speak to you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Different
This book is different I guess the best way to describe it.It tells stories and I don't see where I benefited from the book. The author is very judgmental attitude but there isn't real depth as one reviewer stated.I wasn't impressed, I wouldn't say it was a waste of money but my time is what I lost on this book.It just is different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extreme encouragement found in these pages!
If you are looking to lose weight or just want to discover why you overeat then this is the first book you should read!It is filled with encouraging stories and takes a closer look at why diets are not enough to keep the weight off.Easy-to-read and encouraging this is an honest, practical book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Come ci, Come ca
A previous reviewer expounded ad nauseum on the anger and rage that MUST be felt by fat women the world over; almost as though he himself has been involved with women of size and felt their wrath. However, that is more indicative of his own issues (why keep choosing women with these issues? He himself must be overly familiar with anger and rage) than an indicator of the value of the book. I found the book to contain many of the familiar diatribes and platitudes of any recovery program, without the depth. This is not to say that there were NO redeeming qualities; simply that such a simplistic ideology about the reasons for obesity insult the individual who suffers from such a disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent variety.
I rated this one five stars based on what I look for in diabetic/low-carb cookbooks (1) has to have complete nutritional information (I don't like just "exchanges" or just a carbohydrate range or just sugarfree...); (2) recipes I will make (a favorite is the Guiltless Brownies with cocoa and bananas) that my family won't bypass or that require too many shopping trips to specialty stores; and (3) variety(I don't need another book telling me a crustless pie with sugarfree pudding or tying to just substitute a sweetener for sugar) -- this one has a variety of menus, lots of different dishes, real food ingredients and a wide range of carbohydrate counts instead of assuming all diabetics are using certain ranges or exchanges or avoiding the same foods.Realistic menus.

3-0 out of 5 stars How sweet it isn't.
This book was full of helpful recipes for my aunt who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She has always been a huge fan of pasta and chicken so this book helped her out showing her how she can have the food she wants. Having diabetes strips your freedom to eat what you want andcook books like this give diabetics a choice of recipes rather than a bagof rabbit food. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food
At first glance Every Day's A Holiday Diabetic Cookbook might seem a Christmas title - but it's far more; it promotes making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food. Mr. Food is best known for his earlier 'guy food' books on how the basic bachelor male could whip up a gourmet meal with few ingredients or knowledge: with this and his prior Quick And Easy Diabetic Cooking, he moves in a healthier direction, lending his focus on flavor and speed and appeal to a diabetic's healthy requirements. From Garlic-Crusted Cornish Hens to Champagne Turkey, Creamy Spinach Soup and Balsamic Pork, the dishes sound complicated and fancy - but complicated, they are not! Packed with flavor and appeal - and some of the appeal lies in the super-quick preparation times!
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book for weight loss
This book has been a blessing to me.Having lost some weight, I really wanted a book that emphasized great food and low cal. What better way than a book for diabetics. An easy way to reduce sugar and calories, even though I am not diabetic. And who better to bring you great food and EASY to prepare food than MR Food.I immediately made the chicken cordon bleu.Swore I'd never have time to prepare it late one evening and feed 3 starving children.Yet somehow it came together in 30 minutes and tasted amazing....better to me than restaurant eats and so easy!My picky kids loved it as well as the steak tips recipe....and they dislike veggies normally!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest cookbook ever
This is the greatest cookbook I ever brought and I recommend everyone who like delicous desserts there are some as Mr Food would say Oooh it's so gooood. I just got this book this week and it makes a great Holiday gift. And you don't have to be a diabetic to enjoy this good food. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Approach
I was very impressed with this book. I found that I could not even put it down! There is something wonderful about reading a book that focuses on people's lives and how they overcame terrible situations. "Appetite for Life" approaches eating disorders from a different angle, and I have already told all my friends, especially those with young daughters, to read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Interesting and Educational"
"Appetite for Life" is one of the most interesting books that I have read on the subject of eating disorders. Reading about seven people and their experiences made the problem much more understandable than just a regular how-to book. I like how the author combines these stories and examples from her therapy practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about eating disorders.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heart, Hope and really good information....
Having gone through my own recovery from compulsive overeating, I have found that books on this topic have often been either over-simplified and condescending, or complex and intimidating.Personal memoirs have been either overly dramatic and maudlin, or saccharinly sweet.Ryerson's compilation of stories is refreshingly free of all of these extremes. She adds clear prose and heartful insights to her clients' stories, so that the book reflects a tone of partnership, the kind of thing all of us could use when grappling with this topic:We're not alone, even when we might feel alone."Appetite for Life" did indeed inspire me - to keep on keeping on with my recovery, and in the process, I was moved to tears, smiles and some of my own insights about myself. This is the kind of book that would be great to read even if you're not a recovering addict - but want to be informed, and read some plain-ole-good stories while doing so.And what a gift this book will be for friends and family members still struggling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendous help; it may have literally saved my life.
When I first got this book, my blood sugar had leveled-out at about 300.I just couldn't lower my blood sugar, no matter how well I ate or how much I exercised. All my doctor could or would do was change my medication and order more tests for me. I didn't have medical insurance and I couldn't afford any more tests, or even doctors' visits; so I stopped seeing my doctor.5-0 out of 5 stars A Vital Resource Guide
This book offers an interesting and completely comprehensible overview of diabetes. It is not a "how-to" book, nor does it pretend to be. Rather, it gives you the background information you need to better understand your care plan that your physician, dietician, and whomever else prepares with you. While there are many other volumes on the subject, I recommend this one as an essential resource for any living with diabetes or a diabetic. ... Read more
