5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
If you're a parent of an adolescent girl, then you need to read "The Disappearing Girl" by Dr. Lisa Machioan. With it being written specifically for depression in teenage girls, it is a very helpful resource for parents, friends and even the disappearing girl herself to use when a teenage girl you know or you yourself are experiencing signs of depression. It uses real-life stories told by girls who have been in all kinds of situations involving depression and even suicide attempts to give the reader an honest look at the many different things that may spark depression in the teenage girl. It also gives helpful suggestions on what to do to keep depression from ruling young girl's lives. I highly recommend this to everyone involved in a depressed girl's life, or even to all mothers with a young daughter who may fall victim to depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Parents of Teenage Girls
Whether or not you think your teenage girl is depressed, this is a valuable resource. The author's perspective is so down-to-earth, her advice so accessible, and her care for the girls so evident, that this book is a must-read for any parent of a depressed teenage girl, and a should-read for any parent of any teenage girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Find out that you are not alone!
I am the webowner of the Mental Health Sanctuary and added a story to this book. When the book came out and I was able to read other's stories, not only was the book very interesting to read, but it helped to comfort me, realizing that what I endured in my life was shared by many people. I felt so much less alone as I read other people's stories - their hardships, their pain and how they worked through it - what gave them strength, etc. 5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for anyone who is a human being
I could not put this book down. Each person's poignant story gave me a new understanding and compassion for mental illness of all kinds. I believe it will go a long way in healing the fear and stigma surrounding those who suffer from this kind of illness. As John Brown states in his introduction, "No one feels more lost, alone, misunderstood, confused, and hopeless than someone experiencing a depressive episode. This book will not only benefit the patient; it will also aid their family members, who are just as confused and bewildered." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What Goes Up
This is one of the best written and enjoyable (if this illness can be described as such) books on this subject.I have reread the book many times. After having an experience (and wishing he would "return"), I lived this book a thousand times in my life. From the moment she describes Jim telling her he "disappears" I knew I had a friend.Someone who finally understood what how we love without falling into societies "norm".Judy describes love without fear, and love letting go which is love without the boundaries many place on relationships.I won't even loan this book out of my library for fear it won't be returned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
My life with my husband that is bipolar parallels Judy's on so many levels.I read her book to help me through this devistating time, and it is good to know that I am not alone with my feelings of helplessness and grief.I highly recommend this book to anyone that is experiencing a life with someone with bipolar.Judy not only shared her emotional journey, but included passages from other books and articles on bipolar for references.Very well written.Thank you, Judy.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book reached me on many levels
Having been diagnosed bipolar, you often wonder how your illness is viewed by those closest to you. Judy does this in this book. I read this book together with my husband. For my husband it was a sort of validation of how he is often left worried and helpless in our situation. For me it was an eye opener to what spouses endure during a crisis. I will be forever reminded the importance of having a good support system in place for my family. It also reinforced that dilligent medication, therapy, love and understanding is so important in maintaining a functionable life. This book not only was helpful to us as a family but to my doctor who found it to be a true testament of the torment that a bipolar family endures. A must read. You will not be disappointed. "In our minds stalks a beast... a cruel, mean and wicked beast." So begins Cait Irwin's gentle guide to conquering depression--a book she began as a young teenager after being hospitalized for suicidal tendencies. Writing the book was part of her healing process, and she hopes reading the book will help others regain their mental health.Read more

I believe I have purchased over 10 copies of this book and given them all away. This book provide wonderful insight on how depression affects you. Cait's artwork has helped many teens and adults identify with depression. Buy and it and share it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated and good insights
Irwin's "Conquering the Beast" features some very nice illustrations but a few appear as if she drew them within minutes. Her advice and commentary on depression are indeed accurate and helpful. Still, Irwin and others who have experienced depression must recognize that anti-depressants do not really "conquer" depression. Although they certainly are a miracle, anti-depressants control and subside the symptoms. One hasn't really "conquered" this horror of an illness until the roots of the illness are finally gone. Nevertheless, I would buy or give this book to any teenager struggling with depression, or even family members of a depressed teen. Often those closest to the patient know little about this illness.

The words in this book could have been taken out of my heart. My eyes widened as I read because these were my exact feelings.I am way, way past my teen years but what Cait wrote about is what I have lived through the past years.Cait, you have given us a gift with this book. The next time I see my psychiatrist I will give him this book so he can better understand. The pages say what I could never express. ... This is a wonderful book if you want to know what it feels like to be depressed. It does feel like you are all alone because one of the main things about depression is that you disengage from everything and everyone. 4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I found this book to be very informative and highly recommend it to anyone concerned with how "sad" or withdrawn their child is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Start Somewhere
Although adult depression has been recognized for decades, childhood depression has only been considered since the 1980's. Previously, it was simply thought that children couldn't be depressed. Perhaps this is because (as is learned from this book) the lethargy and weepiness that adults and adolescents experience during depression, in children is often expressed as hostility. The depressed children may in fact be the troublemakers and the discipline problems.5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for families of depressed children
This is a very valuable book for families of depressed children, and I highly recommend it. It contains essential information, thoroughly and clearly covered. One section I particularly liked discussed the effect a depressed child has on family members and family dynamics. Read more

in any situation, it is always my first instinct to play the victim. for example, if someone is making fun of me, I prefer to do nothing about it and just let him insult me. this is easier than standing up for myself, which for me is counter-intuitive and very challenging. even though i can rationalize my human nature, i cannot change it. for psychologists, this is good indication that i am depressed. my mind's ability to reason has led me to this harsh truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harsh truths for some...
I really liked this book, because it really just tells it like it is.Sometimes, that can be really hard for others to face.We all like to believe that we are victims of others, but this book asks you to take personal responsibility for your own actions and feelings.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.
Non-Christians and un-repentant sinners beware! You are about to get offended. This book is not for weak minded people that don't want to come to grip with the fact that their depression may be rooted in their own sinful thought patterns and behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Anatomy of Depression
Wolpert brings together the best of current research (as of 1998) combined with his candid portrayal of his own battle with the demon of depression. He also includes historical and cultural studies. The combination provides readers with a well-written, well-researched, easy-to-understand, and hard-to-put down volume on depression--it's causes, care and cure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Depression Is Cancerous
We know so much, and so little about the illness that affects millions in the United States. This is the conclusion, according to biologist Lewis Wolpert, who takes the reader down a formulaic analysis of depression, its history, and its status in different cultures. One could think of this book as a gathering of numerous reports on depression, with the author's personal experience and conclusions intertwined. Although it is somewhat a personal book, fueled by the author's own intimacy with clinical depression, Wolpert is empirical with his conclusions and encourages more scientific studies.
2-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but stay away if you are a healthworker.
A sufferer of depression myself, I am always on the look out for books dealing with the subject. My medical background as a nurse has enabled me to be thoroughly aware of the reasons of depression and the treatments available for it. I know why it happens and that is not what I needed to read about through out 185 pages of this book. One can't deny that Lewis Wolpert has written a very pbjective and concise book about depression and I would firmly recommend it for non healthworkers and people with no idea whatsoever about depression. However, anyone who is looking for some sort of self help book covering the subject or an elaborate account of a person's struggle with depression should look for other options. Another thing is that Wolpert has explained his own suffering in a very dry, non emotional way that just doesn't make me sympathise with him. The way he describes his turnmoil is stated in the same manner that a politician would use to describe his upcoming tax cuts..Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes where few books so clearly have gone before
Any college-level health collection, especially those strong in mental health concerns, must have THE MYTH OF DEPRESSION AS DISEASE: LIMITATIONS AND ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG TREATMENT: it goes where few books so clearly have gone before, arguing that there's little actual scientific evidence for treating depression as a biological disorder to be treated with drugs. Indeed, the authors say, there is very little known about the role of biology in depression; but marketing by pharmaceutical companies has perpetuated the myth of chemical imbalance and treatments to benefit their bottom lines. Therapy is under-explored in contrast, and should be one of many alternatives to drug therapies: that's the hard-hitting contention of THE MYTH OF DEPRESSION AS DISEASE, which should earn much classroom discussion as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Reading
This is an impressive book. It will open a lot of eyes, especially eyes that watch ads for antidepressive medication on television. The authors wrote the book for people who feel depressed and need more information and for professional caretakers who want a better understanding of treatments for depression.

Editorial Review

"A reader on melancholy," the editor calls this book: a collection of 22 modern essays about depression by writers (several well known) who know their subject intimately. Some face depression as a sudden interruption of a previously gratifying life; others have never known life without it. Their words wrestle to express their vision, their gloom, their attempts to cope, their interactions, their isolation, and, often, their reactions to medications. Some attempt to analyze their depression; others just want you to know what it's like. Besides the essays by writers who have experienced depression firsthand, editor Nell Casey (also a writer of one of the chapters) includes a few essays by their spouses and siblings about what it was like to live with a person suffering from depression.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
I had PPD after the birth of my first daughter. I sought help just months after her birth, and my recovery was complete, but not easy. During the time in which I struggled, I read every thing I could get my hands on. I am quite an avid reader to begin with, so naturally I wanted to read all I could to learn, and help myself. I understand that everyone has different experiences with PPD, but according to the womens clinic I sought help from, PPD is a major deppresion, not just a deppresion, or a "bad" few months. I am not trying to discredit her experience, but I found I could hardley relate. Brook Shields' book was much closer to my experience, and the experience of other women I have talked with. I also was a little turned off by the jokes about different possible titles for the book like "PPD ruined my manicure." It certainly might ruin anyones manicure, but I could hardly lift myself from the couch to eat, let alone get a manicure. My take is that yes she had PPD, but not to the severity that say, Brooke Shields did. I feel if you are suffering from full blown PPD, like as in MULTIPLE major deppresion symptoms, you won't really relate to this as much as maybe Brooke Shields book. I was disapointed too, because I am of the same faith, and thought maybe I could relate on different levels. I also don't think she was in the best possible care. She talked about feeling numb on medication after something like 3-4 days. Any GOOD doctor that knows specifially how to treat PPD would let you know that yes, you may feel strange for a few days, but it takes usually at least 2 weeks for them to level out. Also, medication for an episode of Major Deppresion is not a bandaid if you are activley involved in therapy etc. You are not on them forever, medication does not change you, depression, anxiety, and sleep-deprivation do. I don't think it is very wise to suggest using all the natural supplements until you are clinically and officialy diagnosed with PPD. I am involved in one of the most reputable Womens Mental Health clinics in Chicago, and I they do recommend certain books, but I can say with absolute certainty they would NEVER recommend this to women with PPD. Try something like, This Isn't What I Expected. All the best to those who are struggling with this most engulfing illness.

I suffered from PPD 17 years ago.It was easily the most frightening thing I've ever experienced. No one understood what was happening to me, least of all myself. I was so pleased that Marie was willing to share her story and help others understand and overcome PPD.I bought this book 17 years after the fact and wish I had had it or something like it all those years ago.A must buy for anyone with PPD

2-0 out of 5 stars Inferior REBT Book.
Very near the end of this book the author writes "If the reading of this book doesn't do you much good, don't blame me, it is your fault". Very nice. Also interesting in that Hauck is convinced that depression springs forth from only three causes, one of them being self-blame. Hauck's statement seems all the more idiotic considering the fact that this other blame by Hauck--something which he claims to be against--may cause a depressed person reading this book to take his arrogant stance seriously, and therefore blame himself for not getting better because he read this book and didn't get much out of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book without dogma
This is master piece from paul hauck based on Rational emotive theraphy RET.If one wishes to find religious truth in psychology this is the book.Paul Hauck boldly states there are 3 reasons why we can't blame ourselves and others anytime, anywhere. They are stupidity ,ignorance and disturbance.Logically we can't say person and his behaviour are not same due to those reasons. This is exactly what Jesus preached in Bible. It is exciting to know modern thinking and religious thinking go hand and hand here.No Dogmatism.Just Reason and Evidence. This is a heart soother for depressed people could a life saver if one grasps this simple truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Information Presented Simply and Clearly
Unlike may authors in his field, John Preston set out to write a book that conveyed useful information that could easily be understood by a reasonably intelligent reader. He has succeeded.
5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Self Help Guide From Physician
You Can Beat Depression By Dr. John Preston is a thorough discussion of the causes and signs of depression. The book is in lay language to help you determine if you yourself or your loved one are experiencing a natural sadness which will pass or if the depression is clinical and need's the treatment of a physician.Dr. Preston discusses the reasons many times depression is not correctly diagnosed because it seems simple to pop a pill and feel better. However, Americans are over-medicated and proper diagnosis of depression will give real help, not just a cover-up. Sometimes talking with a loved one or a counselor will solve the problem, and sometimes an illness needs to be treated.Whatever the root of depression, this book will help you interpret the signs and causes and seek the proper help and cure. You don't have to live with depression. This book offers the hope and help you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy beacon to follow
If you're suffering from depression or know someone who is, this slender resource is a quick read packed with solidly researched info and advice. If you're not sure where to turn, if you're feeling helpless, this clearly written, compassionate guide is an excellent place to start finding your way out of darkness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Medicine for Your Soul!
As a therapist I am always interested in books which will challenge my thinking and practice around my work with my clients. Here is a book which has helped me understand the underlying philosophical differences which come into play when making a diagnosis. Is my diagnosis driven by a mechanistic worldview or by a relational worldview? Will I follow the medical model rooted in a scientific cosmology or will I follow the relational model rooted in a spiritual cosmology. Why will I choose one or the other? Dr. Frattaroli provides a well-articulated arguement for choosing the latter.Utilizing a wonderfully written case study, Dr. Frattarolli lays out a clear argument for choosing a therapeutic model which heals the soul - the totallity of our being - over a medical model which only sedates the symptoms and leaves the inner being untouched. I recommend this book for all therapists who seek a broader understanding for the therapy they offer their clients.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important philisophically as well as psychologically
I think this will be a very important book.Dr. Frattaroli sees that we are not just machines, we have souls. There is much more to a human being than is seen on the surface - our unconscious minds seem to have been forgotten in today's culture. His philosophy cuts against the materialism that we in America encounter each time we turn on the TV. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Companion to the Psychoanalytic Process
I had been immersed in the psychoanalytic process for over three years when I came across this book.Having experienced, first hand, the soulful aspects of analysis, both pleasant and painful, I connected instantly to Dr. Frattaroli's accounts of his work with patients.I am convinced that the only sane and solid path to emotional well being is the long, introspective one described so eloquently in this book.If you have ever considered beginning psychoanalysis (or you are simply interested in learning more about what it means to be fully human) then I strongly recommend that you read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A vital resource for psychologists and counselors
Psychologist Leslie S. Greenberg, Ph.D. and associate professor of Adult Education, Community Development and Counseling Psychology Jeanne C. Watson, Ph.D. present Emotion-Focused Therapy For Depression, a straightforward manual for depression treatment focusing upon the therapeutic relationship that especially focuses upon arousing and evoking emotions. Written in a clinical style and enhanced with sample cases and dialogues, evidence from studies, recommendations for practice, and acknowledgements of skepticism toward this form of therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy For Depression is a vital resource for psychologists and counselors as it strives to thoroughly clarify a useful tool for helping those in dire need. Highly recommended for college and professional psychology reference shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK HELPED ME SO MUCH!!
I REALIZE THAT NO BOOK IS A MIRACLE WORKER FOR THE CURE OF DEPRESSION. I WAS GOING THROUGH A HORRIBLE TIME WITH DEPRESSION. I FELT LIKE I WAS IN A PIT. THIS LITTLE BOOKED HELPED ME SO MUCH. THE REASON IT DID WAS BECAUSE IT WAS FULL OF GOD'S WORD, ALONG WITH GOOD SOUND ADVICE. I WOULD READ THE LITTLE BOOK OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I ALSO READ MY BIBLE. I EVEN SLEPT WITH MY BIBLE. LOTS OF THE ADVICE IN THE LITTLE BOOK HELPED ME TO HAVE HOPE DURING MY DEPRESSION. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. NOTHING IS A QUICK FIX. BUT THIS LITTLE BOOK WAS A BIG PART OF MY RECOVERY. THE REASON I CAME ON THIS SITE WAS TO SEE IF I COULD ORDER ONE FOR A FRIEND. THANK SO MUCH AND GOD BLESS YOUR MINISTRY, ELAINE

4-0 out of 5 stars living with depression isn't fun but it is a choice
I feel like depression is both physical and spritual problems. It is a sin to let depression control our lives.I have been diagnosed through the Minirth Clinic as a bipolar individual.I am on medication to help me.The idea behind Dr. Minirth's books are to make you realize that God will help us through our depression.Only through prayer will we have the strength to overcome depression. It will not make it go away but it will help us not to give into Satan's control over us through the depression. If you don't believe that Satan battles for our lives then maybe you shouldn't read this book.May God lead you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Good review of the negative aspects of SSRIs (and there are many).Would have given it five stars, but he leaves out the very important fact that SSRIs can sometimes cause permanent sexual dysfunction after the drugs are stopped. This has long been overlooked by the medical community and should be included here.Do a goolge search for details.

4-0 out of 5 stars Packed with information, but difficult to read
David Healy obviously knows a lot about antidepressants (and about psychopharmacology in general). However, he apparently doesn't know a lot about using clear, straightforward, unpretentious language.4-0 out of 5 stars ignorance may be bliss but it does not solve the problem
Being a researcher of SSRIs and depression from a psychologiacl standpoint I was impressed by the line took by Healy- my own research is begining to show that even when people take SSRIs their self-esteem (which is formed by childhood and environment) is not affected or changed. I agree with Healy that we should take far more account of the fundamnetal social implications of depression within society and treat this as well as the individual- doing this is a far more efective way of tackling depression. However this may not be the case for the drug companies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Interactive Book
This is a very good book to help anyone learn about expressive arts and to use them for healing of self or for others. Simple and yet deep at the same time. Ganim takes us on a jouney and show us how to approach our emotions through the art work. The examples of visual pieces are just wonderful.
5-0 out of 5 stars "art therapy" without the stigma
As an artist and teacher who has personally experienced the powerful healing benefits of the creative act, I applaud this book! I believe it can serve many who would not otherwise seek out an art therapist or art therapy texts. Don't dismiss it as "New age hogwash" until you try it yourself -- the proof is in getting those creative juices going and seeing where they take you. You can change and learn in ways that will amaze you --- and the best part is that YOUR creative spirit will show you the way, with a little help from guidebooks such as this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed yet readable, inspirational and helpful
Ms. Ganim's wealth of experience, fluency in art, and intuitive understanding of the human experience comes through in this book.Case studies and excellent color plates help to put life into the points and exercises she gives. There is a tendency to hyperbole and sometimes what seems too good to be true may be just that. But I concede that tendency to anyone who is enthusiastic about their work. This book is made to be used. The exercises are doable and procede in a logical, stepwise fashion. No one needs to be an artist to benefit from these exercises.Ms. Ganim's definition of healing as opposed to cure puts this work in perspective and gives it validity.I would highly recommend it to anyone seriously looking to experience healing in mind, body, and spirit. ...
