5-0 out of 5 stars If you have depression read this book
I bought this book soley based on the few glowing reviews listed here. While I was a bit skeptical given how great people said this book is, I have to concur.I think this is one of the best books on depression and I've read quite a few.The case studies he presents are so well written it's like reading a novel. But he balances that with good technical insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Afflictions
A Mood Apart: Depression, Mania, & Other Afflictions of the Self is a terrific book for those of us like myself who have suffered with Bipolar Disorder(Manic Depression) for 35 years. The book covers a wide range of topics including meds. Dr. Whybrow & his group at the Univ of Penn. are one of the leading research groups in this field. If it were not for people of the caliber of Dr. Whybrow and Dr. Kay Jamison of Johns Hopkins, I would not be in remission or medication stabile today. Dr. Whybrow's book "A Mood Apart: The Thinker's Guide to Emotion & Its Disorders" is the paperback version of the above book and not a new title. Maury Schiowitz

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful in understanding my recent diagnosis.
I was recently diagnosed bipolar I at 37 years old. I'm also in in alcohol recovery through a major Detroit hospital. Reading this text was as if reading about myself. My wife has found its contents helpful as well. Dr. Whybrow must be commended on a masterpiece...he seems to be truly compassionate toward those who suffer this hellish disease. God bless you, doctor for professionals like yourself. "We" need you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Sheila
I just want to thank Sheila for writing this book. For exposing her inner life to the world. The stuff which plagues us as christians, all of the facades, masks and "Shoulds" of christians.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Testimony & Book
A few years ago I found a new copy of this book at a used book store for a decent price. I gave it to my dad for Christmas because he's an avid reader of non-fiction, especially biographies & autobiographies. I wish I'd read it first before I gave it away. I eventually bought a copy from Amazon & read it recently (4/04). I'm glad I finally read it myself. 5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL -- speaks to theheart
I have struggled with, at times winning and at times losseing, depression since I was a small child.I am a strong full-faith Christian.Believe it or not, and a lot of people don't -- you can be both.Sheila breaks that ground and opens her heart and her soul for the good of us reading. She has hurt sooooo much; and come soooo close to the edge of darkness. This book speaks to the heart and damaged maind of every depressed reader; I have cried on each page; for her and for me.It is a great read for the non-depressed to illustrate that a real and active Christan can still be attacked. The support the book offers for fellow depression suffers is excellent. It is not a total explanation of depression, nor of "seeking help" but it is a personal journy that empowers other to walk the path.It is not all you need to read; but it is a read support. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Written expressly to be easily understood
Unveiling Depression In Women: A Practical Guide To Understanding And Overcoming Depression by licenced psychologists Catherine Hart Weber and Archibald Hart is a serious guide written expressly to be easily understood by the non-specialist general reader. This informative highly recommended work deals specifically with understanding the unfortunate phenomenon of depression as it specifically presents itself in women. Individual chapters address causes of depression, getting help, and strategies for improving one's life when suffering from depression or if a loved one suffers from depression. Unveiling Depression In Women is an ideal book for anyone who suffers from chronic or clinical depression, and those who love them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Practical Guide to Dealing With Depression
This volume is indeed a practical guide to understanding and dealing with depression, especially as it affects women. The place of Christian faith in the healing process is paramount in this book.Discussion of the topic is divided into four major sections: Understanding Depression in Women; Causes of Depression; Getting Help and Healing Depression; and Strategies for Overcoming Depression. In non technical terms the causes and affects of depression are discussed as well as possible methods of intervention. It is helpful to see that depression is a natural consequence of life experiences. When it absorbs a major part of one's life, depression has become a serious problem, but not a hopeless one. Beginning with prayer and fellowship with other Christians, the depressed woman can obtain the degree of help she needs if she follows the suggestions provided by the authors. Pastors, counselors, grandparents, and good friends will find this a ready resource. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The message is needed!
Seeing in the Dark is an eye-opening glimpse into the world of clinical depression. Authored by a pastor with depression and a medical doctor whose wife suffers from depression, along with a foreword by Dr. John Trent, it is quite possibly the definitive Christian book about depression.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough, yet easy to understand...
By far the best resource book on depression I've read to date, Seeing in the Dark is the ultimate tool for treating the depressed Christian, which according to the authors - one a pastor and the other a doctor - is NOT an oxymoron. I loved the message in this book, plus it's very reader friendly. By that I mean you don't have to have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology to understand it (though in my case, I have that degree.) Too many times I've heard people trying to explain depression away, and like Job's friends, the help offered only makes the person feel worse because it's often NOT helpful. At any rate, Seeing in the Dark touches on the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of depression in a powerful and honest way. Both authors have first-hand experience with depression. One has the diagnosis and the other is married to a woman who has the diagnosis. They skillfully address myths about depression as well as revealing ways to treat the illness, and how to identify whether or not you have it. Clinical depression is also distinguished from normal depression via grief, sadness, loss, etc. The differences are made very clear in this book. It's also small and concise so as not to overwhelm the reader with the facts. Personal examples are disbursed throughout to hold the reader's attention. I highly recommend Seeing in the Dark for people who want a better understanding of this pervasive and non-discriminating illness that rains on the just as well as the unjust. I normally dislike non-fiction but found this book very encouraging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a substance abuse problem, a must read!
The author feels that many substance abusers have an underlying emotional problem like depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder etc. They really need to be treated for this in order to get the substance abuse under control.5-0 out of 5 stars A great depression "primer"
A great "primer" on depression. This is the first book I read on depression after reading Darkness Visible, and I still think it's one of the best, especially as the author's daughter, who suffered from depression, contributed to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Life Explanation of Depressive Illness and it's Affects
This was the first work on depression authored with a real life perspective on the illness and its affects on "life" that I had read.Having been trained in the mental health field and being employed in a mental health related job, this was the first work to help me feel better about my own illness. It was so easy to be understanding and supportive of others with this illness, but when it came time for me to understand and to be caring for myself, it all but elluded me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a teen, freak, or outlaw - just suicidal?
Actually, I've met very few people in my life that didn't at least at times fall into the freak or outlaw catagories... but I wouldn't want you to get the idea that you have to be outrageous or extraspectacular or political in your freakiness to be able to benefit from this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kate serves it up down home style
I don't know if it's boorish to predicate a review with my own trans status, but hey, I am if it matters. Seriously, I love Kate Bornstein because she tells us exactly what we need to hear - we are human, we suffer, we do not deserve to be punished (unless that's what we want). I use all Kate's books not just for myself, but to point other people in my life toward as a gender primer and affirmation. She's an easy, interesting and heartfelt author who shares the secrets so many of us are too afraid to admit are our own. This is an essential reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kate ROCKS!
I found myself reading this book the way I savor fine wine.I literally read it in 10 page incriments, partly because I wanted to make sure that I was fully digesting the contents and because I never wanted to reach the book's end.Kate is a mind-blowing, earth-shattering activist who continues to inspire me.I picked up this book at a time in my life when I wasn't feeling low or depressed, but 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens Freaks and Other Outlaws provided me with such a life affirming experience, that words don't even begin to do justice to it's impact.Know that I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen! ... This book is VERY helpful. It's both scripturally and medically educating. To complement each day's reading, in the back of the book are daily perforated cards with the scripture and memory joggers for the day.Well-written by 2 men who still face depression, but don't let it overtake them.I'm on day 22 today. The card says "LifeFilter 22 / I Can Dilute My Depression through Sharing / "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14).On the back it says "Today / 1. Remeber: God does not want me to be alone in this world. That's why he is always with me. / 2. I resolve to leave isolation and share meaningfully with some positive, wise Christians. / 3. If necessary, I will find a godly counselor and let him/her partner with me in overcoming my depression." It's a cool approach and has taught me a lot. This and "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" are the books that have helped me the most. That along with medication, counseling, time, and talking things out with friends. There is hope. You want there to be hope. You can have a life again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book On Conquering Depression Out There
First I'd like to say that if I could give more than 5 stars, I would for this book. This book is a wonderful book on how to conquer depression, an illness that has plagued me for over 9 years. It is written by two professionals who both are strong Christians and both have suffered from depression which makes you know they understand what you are going through and there is hope. I also appreciated the fact that I didn't have to sift through what I felt was Scriptural and what I felt wasn't as this book is very Biblically based and glorifies God throughout the whole book. If you are suffering, have suffered, or know someone who is suffering from Depression please purchase this book for them. I only wish I had found it years ago when I went through my first major depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This book is really great! When I was first diagnosed with depression, I didn't understand a lot about it.This book really helped me to understand what was going on with me emotionally and understand what was chemically going on in my body. When the authors say they understand where you're at, they really do!They've been there too. From a Christian perspective, this book is very bibically based. It is the best book I've found on depression yet, at least from a Christian perspective. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Combination
"New Light on Depression" offers a rare combination--medically reliable research and biblically sound insight. Co-author David Biebel uses his theological training to explore "faith, hope, and love" as a model for facing depression; while co-author Harold Koenig uses his training as a psychiatrist and researcher to probe biological and medical elements of depression. The end result is a well-written, easy-to-read wholistic volume on the causes, cure, and care of depression. Of course, given their integration of biblical principles and secular science, they will likely be criticized by folks on either extreme. However, for a well-reasoned, balanced, and up-to-date analysis of depression, this is a great place to begin.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is one of the few books that I have read by a Christian author that talks about how medication can help depression, rather than relying on prayer alone.I have gotten a lot of comfort from this book in knowing that I am not alone and that medication may be medically necessary at times and doesn't mean that one is a bad Christian.Anyone who suffers from clinical depression and their family members should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Light On Depression
Finally! A book with a medical point of view and a religious one. This book is by far my favorite book on depression. It is easy to read and dispels the myths associated with mental illness. I would recommend anyone with a mental illness read this book. It's not only for people with depression. I have a hard time putting it down, once I start reading it. This would also be a good book for some religious leaders to read who think mental illness can be controlled by prayers alone. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter are helpful also. ... Read more

Marianne Williamson cuts through the chase and brings to light, in vivid details, how a real blessed relationship should be, giving tips on dating and the horrors involved in that area. She also conveys a spiritual message of how to deal with depression, making one feel not so alone with darkness. I love her humor and savvy tips on men. 5 stars to you Marianne, with much love and respect.

2-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I give it 2 and not 1 star is because of some good information. She tells us to fall in love with Universe. Because of this and other similar comments I give it 2. I do recommend that you listen to this. She has a lot of good, and helpful information that will help you see things from a different side of problems & relationships. don't accept everything she tells you, but some of the information will open your eyes on dealing with problems and relationships. And even if you're not in one at the moment, you still need to hear this. This is a must for all who is in a relationship or thinking to enter one. 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem!
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest.Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing.Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly.Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Innacurate mythology, revisionist history
While Ms. George does have some useful things to say about dark moon mysteries, it would be more interesting and engaging (and less likely to have readers throwing the book against the wall) if she did not use revisionist history and inaccurate mythology to support her conclusions.I can think of better books on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Great Resource.
I bought this book 7 years ago, and have referred to it time and time again.I teach Intuition classes.Part of what I teach includes understanding natural life cycles.I use Demetra George's book to show my students all the aspects of a moon cycle and to remind them that all parts of the cycle, including the time of the Void (Dark Moon) are important in life. This book also provides excellent information about the Goddess Hecate, the old wise women who helps us in the night.George's book is very empowering for women and attaches the female spirit to ancient women's knowledge before it was changed and distorted by conflicting religions and societal influences.I recommend this book. ... The paradox of bipolar disorder baffles its victims with its manic highs and depressive lows, plaguing as many as two million Americans. Since bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) has often been misdiagnosed as depression, many patients have had a difficult if not impossible task of understanding and managing this condition. WHY AM I UP, WHY AM I DOWN explores the nature of this illness, including who is at risk and where to get help. In simple terms, this often complex and devastating condition becomes comprehensible and hopefully manageable.5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I read it!
I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder after being misdiagnosed with depression for 10 years and this book made a lot of sense.I liked that it addressed the suicide issue, because most books don't mention suicide hardly at all.It stated that bipolar disorder is the #1 reason for suicide in the U.S.The book is easy to read and very interesting for the bipolar person.I also read my husband some of the pertinent stuff I thought he should know.I learned a lot about ECT.It is obviously written by people who know what they're talking about.

Doctors, whose heads are cluttered with statistics, case studies, and theoretical jargon, often write books that are too heavy, boring, and technical for the average person to want to understand. My sincere thanks go to the Dell Publishers, who have had the intelligence to create a series of easy-to-read guides for educating the public about mental health.Read more

The book was very direct in confronting the issues that people of color struggle with on a daily basis. The book also brought out some strong points that need to be addressed immediately by all people.I found it to be a good read, and shared it with others that I know.

Steve Perry does an incredible job pointing to the REAL issues concerning our Black youth. He doesn't pull any punches as he challenges each and every institution and encourages them to "Man Up" and begin to take responsibility to try to save the next generations of Black men. Excellent book for anyone concerned about future cultural stability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Credibility.
I am a 59 year old black male and Vietnam Vet. So far, I have only browsed through the book and I can't find the words to express how impressed with this young man Steve Perry. At first, I thought only Bill Cosby was the only black man to tell it like it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help to my daughter
My daughter just delivered a healthy 8 lb 6 oz boy but was not able to enjoy him at all. As a matter of fact, she said to me "I got angry when I realized I couldn't send him back".She had a pretty tough first pregnancy, endured 5 months of bed rest, developed HELLP syndrome which caused an emergency C-section and two days later ended up back in the hospital with an intestinal infection.Who could blame her for being overwhelmed, unhappy and unsure about having had this baby.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every struggling postpartum mom should have this book
This book contains the stories of dozens of women who have traveled the road through PPD and back and lived to tell the tale. Having suffered myself from postpartum depression and anxiety in the past, the book inspired me to write down my own story, which has helped me put closure on that painful time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential to recovery
This book has been essential to my recovery from postpartum depression (PPD).Hearing from doctors and friends that I'd be OK was one thing; hearing it from real women who've been through the darkness and back was quite another, and had much more impact.I was amazed what a kickstart this book gave to my recovery, and I hope every women grappling with PPD has the opportunity to read it. ...
