5-0 out of 5 stars Really Love This Book!!
Don't let the size fool you.If you have been diagnosed with DID, then this little book of 109 pages is what you need.It doesn't go into the hows and whys of DID, the DID Source Book is great for that. What "Got Parts?" gives you is a day to day manual for getting through life with DID.I carry it in my backpack where ever I go. There are times that DID just gets me down, so I pick up the book, thumb easily to the section I want, take a minute to read about what I need to do, then I remember and do it.Another great thing about this book is that it is written by someone who has DID, who lives and fights in the trenches of DID.This brings authenticity to the book.It also has an index and is easy to locate the subject you are looking for. The writing style of the author is very easy going and she doesn't ever break into stories of her past. There is a page, however in the very back entitled, "About the Author" who remains unidentified.Even then she never talks about the details of her abuse. It's just plain good advice from someone who knows.I have several DID books, but this one is my favorite when I just need to get through the day. When I have moments of feeling crazy, I open the book. When I feel overwhelmed with emotion, I open this book.It helps me to clear my thinking and gives me immediate direction. In short, I really love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for sufferers of DID
Excellent information, step by step excersises, easy to read, non complex book. Must read for all patients and mental health providers of DID!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
When I first got this book, I was a bit ticked that I paid thirteen dollars for a book that was only around a hundred pages. But once I read it, I knew it was well worth the money. Every sentance is informative. It confronts many daily aspects of life that are affected when one has DID and how to overcome that. Its not full of psycho-mumbo-jumbo but how to handle everyday thigns like taking medicine, raising the kids, sexual activity, work, and respect among the alters. It is truly an owners manual for those with DID. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Door number three
I have suffered with misdiagnosis, fruitless talk therapy, and then found real hope in a true diagnosis of Bipolar type 2 and ADD, with the right medications. This event was life saving and for those who helped, I am forever grateful. I have found that after slowing down my impulsivity and rapid mood shifts, I was lost regarding what to do with my new and improved brain: I have studied Marsha Linehan's books on DBT, but found them dense and difficult to decipher when the going got rough and I found myself in storm tossed events. What I have needed from childhood onward was a way to see the cascade of event, feeling, belief, and then behavior that has been poorly regulated within me and within my moody, alcoholic, and impulsive extended family. Thomas Marra has elegantly and simply shown the inside of the black box of my earlier life and has offered a path toward positive behaviors and self protective reflexes. He clearly states that those who suffer with mood disorders put an inordinate amount of energy toward a mood state and overreaction to life stressors that perpetuates the misery of an adult child of a painful and dark path. He shows how to gently dissect out feelings toward events and then how my preconditioned beliefs (actual gut level deep instincts) set me up for good or bad outcomes. I wish I had known this when I was a child since I must diligently work this material with several friends and my enlightened wife regularly or I feel overwhelmed with large and then small stressors. His practical and simple and profound exercises cut at the core of my early childhood programming and allow me to find meaning in suffering and real joy when I fight my way out of the paper bag of my life. I will continue to use this book for myself and my family and for those who want something to do with their thoughts and feelings that leads to real life. By the way, I am a family physician, and am thankful to offer those who suffer with mood disorders a true healing balm along with mood regulating medications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Usefull but weak from a theoretical point of view
I'm a PhD in logic, but have red with interest Marra's book, searching for a new and meaningfull perspective on depression and anxiety.
4-0 out of 5 stars very good resource
i like this work.it provides the reader with practical suggestions and exercises.it covers most of the problems encountered in mood disorders and anxiety.it could go more into interpersonal issues.overall, i believe it is a very good resource and i've been using itas a core reading for a therapy group.at the price, new, i think that it is worth the purchase for the reduction in distress and improved coping skills.i'm surprised by the average rating overall by other raters and find it well worthwhile. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Better than 10 years therapy
WOW! After spending a number of years in therapy, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly more helpful than any of the therapy. I truly wished every therapist, especially the HMO therapist that I have had to deal with, had a copy and practiced the formulas in this book. Highly recommended! Read this book and give a copy to you therapist and Physician for them to actually read and use.
3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
I found that this book was heavily skewed to bipolar depression. While the information and exercises given are no doubt helpful to those with bipolar depression, I found that they did not really pertain to my unipolar (postpartum) depression.I would look for different resources if you are suffering from unipolar depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help for Depression
Depression is a horrible illness that I would not have survived if it were not for books like this one.I researched and sought information endlessly when in the black hole of this horrible illness. This book provides resources and information that is necessary for anyone suffering from depression or those working with the suffering individuals.Always remember there is help and its not as bad as it seems.Depression is an illness that effects your entire being so treatment is necessary. You cant just shake it off. This book helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I realized after reading this book how much power our thoughts have over our feelings. It is not easy but we do have the ability to change our negative thought patterns, and by doing that we can help to relieve anxiety and depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have been suffering from anxiety attacks for four years. This book put the causes into perspective.I found instant relief using the techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful.
I did not like this book at all. I thought it was very negative in its attitude towards people who are depressed. It seemed to make light of the subject and act like if you just think positively everything will be great. If you just need to improve your self-esteem a little bit, this might help. However, if you are trying to recover from any kind of significant battle with depression or anxiety, I recommend Undoing Depression by Richard O'Connor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful and well-written book on depression
In this important book, Tracy Thompson tackles the seldom talked about topic of maternal depression and has done a phenomenal job of exploring how, for far too many women, depression can intermingle with and transform the experience of motherhood.Drawing upon her own experiences with depression and including the stories of hundreds of women she interviewed, she paints a picture of maternal depression that is honest, compelling, and perhaps most importantly, empathic. Moreover, she has deftly woven this evocative descriptive material with a careful review of the medical literature, creating a work that is scholarly and engaging.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful book on Depression ....
If I hadn't seen an ongoing discussion with the author online and heard about this book, I probably would not have picked it up since I do not suffer much from depression. But the discussion has sparked an interest and since I do have relatives that suffer from depression, I was intrigued enough to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, calming resource
I wish I had read this book a long time ago, when my boyfriend's depression started. The information is pertinent and it gives tangible advice on what tp do for yourself and your depressed partner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent support for those whose partner is depressed
In this book, author Anne Sheffield offers excellent support to those who are involved wiht someone who is struggling with depression. The best thing about this book is the way in which it both normalizes and validates the responses of the non-depressed partner, assuring the reader that they are not going crazy and that they are not alone in their feelings of frustration and confusion.Sheffield also provides plenty of helpful information and advice, including educational information about depression, strategies for persuading your partner to seek help, ideas on how to set limits with your partner, and guidelines for deciding whether to stay or leave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Purchasing for the Diet Info Alone
What a great book.Clear, common-sense advice on keeping your mind healthy through natural approaches. The diet-related information is worth its weight in gold.I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A broader view of depresssion
Excellent book.A multi-disciplinary view of depression, it looks beyond drug and talk therapy without denying their importance.Emmons studied, practices, and writes about other approaches to depression, such as diet, supplements, exercise, Ayurvedic (historical Indian) medicine and the Buddhist psychological/emotional types. This provides a deeper and broader understanding and treatment of depression.A richly woven text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tool for regular folk and for professionals
As a mindfulness meditation teacher and a spiritual mentor, I am keeping copies of The Chemistry of Joy in my office. I have already recommended the book to numerous friends and family members. Some of the highlights for me: 1) the gentle, clear way that Dr. Emmons reminds us readers that there are many doors to healing, that it is good to open the door that moves most easily for us first, and that it is often through making one or two adaptations on a number of levels that we begin to experience life as having more comfort to it; 2) the empowerment that comes from having this kind and seasoned psychiatrist steadily reminding us to believe in our deeper self; 3) the way desperation is allayed as one realizes that brain chemistry correlates with two ancient wisdom systems from other parts of the globe- ah, what a balm for the isolation that one can feel on this difficult journey to relieve depression. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a unique niche
I applaud John McManamy for writing an excellent, insightful and information packed book!John has the unique perspective of not only being a very knowledgeable authority on depression and bipolar disorder, but also a consumer himself because of his diagnosis. He is brutally honest about issues ranging from medications, the role of sleep in wellness, the seriousness of the illness . . . there is no sugar coating or glossing over topics. At the same time, John intersperses the book with a refreshing sense of humor and candor.Unlke many books that present the facts in a dry clinical format, this book will bring a smile to your face or have you laughing out loud at comments such as "anyone taking ***** with either of these drugs is simply begging for an audition as the next Macy's Santa" (in reference to medication induced weight gain).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
As any undergraduate student probably knows, most college courses require a textbook; many of which are so painfully long and monotonous that it's really hard to stay focused on the material being read.'Abnormal Psychology,' on the other hand, was a pleasure to read.Halgin and Whitbourne have presented this subject in a style that's informative, yet clear and concise, and above all...interesting.Included are case studies that accompany each chapter, providing helpful examples of the psychological disorders being addressed (e.g., personality disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, etc.), along with video clips in the cd-rom.In addition, the writing style itself makes for a smooth read. This book is definitely recommended for understanding abnormal psychology (and if you're a student I'd suggest the workbook too). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ground Breaking Research; Vital Information
This is a book that can be life changing. It's extremely solid, clearly written, for the lay person, and fully documented, and it concerns Dr. Stoll's claims as to the benefits of taking Omega-3 oil supplements. It was recommended to me by a Nurse Practitioner at the Hospital Clinic where I go for regular medical care, and it has caused a revolution in my life.We live in a wilderness of self help and health care books that can confuse us and numb us with their contradictory claims. But be assured this book is a thorough and brilliant record of the results of actual medical research. Dr. Stoll's work with Omega-3was done at Harvard, and he knows whereof he speaks. He is not the only one recommending that we take Omega-3 supplements to make up for the deficiencies in our "modern"diet.Indeed many many doctors are now talking about this, and word can not spread too fast.Read this book. And take it from this reader: there is indeed a profound" Omega-3 connection, " and it's vital that we avail ourselves of this substance for better health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best discovery for everyone
This is one of those books where after you read it your life style will change. We spend billions of dollars on health care at the treatment level when we should be focusing on the cause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives Hope for New Practitioners
This book is fantastic! It gave me hope and inspiration to know that I could potentially beat my depression without being on medication for ever. Amy talks about a lot of different practices that are said to help with depression. I was a little dissapointed that some of them were not more fully explained, but this is a great starting point! With the knowledge I learned from this book, now I know what to research further and what questions to ask my yoga teacher. The references in the back of the book are also very helpful. I'm so greatful that I stumbled upon this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars AN INCREDIBLE LIFE CHANGING BOOK
This book thoroughly defines Depression from every angle. It's an intensely personal book which makes the read even more gripping and important. It is clear that depression comes in many shapes and sizes. You can be a high-functioning individual and be depressed.Ever wonder why you're so irritated and angry all the time? Yes, you are depressed. Ever wondered why you suffer from ruminations and obsessive thinking over things you can't control? Yes, you're depressed.Ever wonder why you long for days by gone by? Yes, you're depressed etc. The revelations gained from this book are astounding. I had no idea that depression had so many levels. Beautifully written and shatters all the negative myths about the disease and most importantly outlines the true benefits of medication. After reading this book, I realized that probably millions of people on the planet suffer from depression and they don't even know it.A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - very well written
This book brought both tears and empathy to myself and everyone else who suffers intense and real depression - to hear someone so eloquently describe the various chapters and measures of depression ("Suicide, etc") - this is an enormous and life work of incredible literature and an accountancy of the horrors and nature of depression. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering the very darkness of depression - which I cannot describe, yet this author does an incredible job of doing such - to those dealing with those they love working though and understanding depression. Highly, highly recommended. I cannot accolade this book or write enough to express my gratitude and comfort (in hearing/knowing of others - including the author) of other's darkenss which we label as "depression" -- I just wish I was as good an author or writer as this; I am in amazement in the manner which the author has explained the nature of melancholy -- depression -- and the darkness which it covers.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read on depression

I needed to reference this book for a counseling situation and it came right on time and in great condition. Thanks

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for sufferers of clinical depression
This book was recommended to me by a mental health professional.I struggled to get through nearly 300 pages of this drivel before writing this review. This book takes everything that depressive patients have been told and tosses it out the window.Patients suffering serious depressive episodes will likely be offended by the simplistic attitudes taken by the author. It's premise seems to be that depression can be cured by sheer force of will - get up, go out, see people, exercise, blah blah blah."Optimism is a choice", "Where there's a will, there's a way" and other such empty platitudes fill this book.People in the grips of serious depression know that no amount of will can get them out of bed on some days, and that leaving the house at all can seem like a major achievement. What is most irritating about this book is that the author vacillates between conflicting opinions, advocating one side of an argument and then equally advocating the other - sometimes within a single paragraph. It's hard to decipher what this author is trying to convey, except for the general notion that all depression can be controlled simply by the power of positive thinking on the part of the afflicted.Tom Cruise told me that a few weeks ago for free - and he's not a Ph.D.Don't waste your time on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars This review explains the need for magnesium
While this book may help some people, an even better book is Dr. Carolyn Dean's book The Miracle of Magnesium. Here is a quote from Dr. Dean's book regarding magnesium in the treatment of depression: "With proper amounts of magnesium, nature makes sufficient serotonin and you experience emotional balance. But when stress depletes magnesium, a vicious cycle spins out of control and depression can occur. The body needs magnesium in order to release and bind adequate amounts of serotonin in the brain. The pharmaceutical industry has focused its research for the treatment of depression on serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac to capitalize on serotonin's chemical effects instead of giving serotonin what it really needs -- magnesium...Magnesium deficiency is a potential cause for every type of depression. All treatment protocols should begin with adequate doses of this valuable mineral." If you are suffering from depression, I beg you to acquire and read Dr. Dean's book and take supplemental magnesium daily as Dr. Dean recommends. You may find that this important nutrient is the solution you have been seeking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best depression help book ever! And for $6 used!?!?! BYE BYE WELLBUTRIN!!!!!
Wow! OK, let me get this straight.I have been majorly depressed for the past 9 years, and I'm 29.So, you see...the best part of my life was gone.I tried almost everything there was to try, and of couse nothing really worked. Some may have worked for a little bit and the depression came back even stronger soon after. I read books and messageboards to keep up to date about ways people have tried and worked for them.Nope, nothing did anything worth mentioning. And the meds (Paxil and Wellbutrin) actually made me not care about anything. True I felt less depressed, but I was like a zombie who couldn't feel anything or express emotions and feelings. My short term memory and cognitive skills were reduced to nothing while on these meds, so that actually made me more depressed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of helpful dietary information
This book makes a good reference for the different uses of amino acids that can help depression. It also details the different types of depression so you can find your symptoms and individualize your treatment. The dietary information is sound.A well written how-to that will help a lot of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars it worked for me!
If I had my own TV show, this is the guy I would invite on to be my alt med guru.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mother's Heartache
As a Danielle Steel fan since the dawn of her writing career, I've often wondered how she captures emotional anguish so vividly. In researching manic-depression while writing LOVING LARRY, I found the answer apparent in HIS BRIGHT LIGHT.From the heart of a mother she lovingly introduces her children, shares her personal history and bares her soul in this painful account of her son's struggle with manic-depressive illness and its effect on her family. The poignant portrayals she creates in fiction come--at least in part--from heartbreaking first-hand experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steel's best work to date
Widely known for her romantic novels in far off places, Danielle Steel managed to create a career that likely exceeded her wildest dreams. Yet beneath the veneer of gentile refinement, the famous author struggled to help her son Nick Traina, a young man who was taken from Earth before his time. Lucky for him, and for us, Steel didn't let his passing go without triumph for those like him.
5-0 out of 5 stars His Bright Light Can Save Lives
Danielle Steel wrote this book with a purpose greater than many may realize. As a pure and loving tribute to her son Nick's life and as a direly needed awareness among people about how BPD (Bipolar Disorder, or manic depression) is a disease that kills people, because they do not have proper medical diagnosis or treatment.

2-0 out of 5 stars It will just induce more depression
Overall proably one of the worst books ive ever read in my entire life. No wonder why so many people suffer from Depression. This is half the battle. Terrible advice (such as eating chocalate and being happy). I respect the fact that it does break some stuff down, but it again doesnt answer many vital questions that a depressed person would like to know.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one
This book was written to sell books, not to help people. If it were possible to end depression by intellectualizing it, this might help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I've read several books on depression and I must say that Depression For Dummies is far more practical and easy to read than the others. The exercises are truly useful and applicable to everyday life. I especially liked the section on relapse prevention. I hadn't known that relapse is such a high risk and it seems odd that other books I've seen on self-help for depression barely bring the subject up. If you want serious help with moods and depression I can't think of a better book to recommend. ... Read more
