5-0 out of 5 stars A family physician reviews the book for a lay audience
"Overcoming Arthritis" is an excellent book for the lay person. It discusses the common types of arthritis, some of the origins of arthritis, and reviews treatments for arthritis. It also describes some of the self-care that people with arthritis can use to minimize the disease process itself and to make their lives more comfortable. The most important part of the book, however, is Dr. Lam's introduction of his "Tai Chi for Arthritis" program. He describes in photos and in words the twelve steps in the form that has been shown to decrease pain and stiffness in people with arthritis and to increase strength and flexibility and a sense of well-being in this same population. The photos are excellent and precisely demonstrate each of the twelve movements. From this book, a person could begin to practice Tai Chi on their own.He also suggests other places where a person might get more information about dealing with arthritis in a pro-active, positive way.5-0 out of 5 stars overcoming arthritis?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.
This is an excellent book to help you fix your back injury if you have been in an auto accident like me. Full of useful tips, and general good advice. It's one of these self-help books that will help you tremendously dealing with the pain and suffering experienced after a personal injury. I am fond of self-help books, self-help websites and other self-help resources too, and this book is on the top of my list (others like this website http://www.settlementcentral.com) have helped me a lot on the legal side of my personal injury claim too. They even talked about chiropractic care as well as providing demand letters and other stuff useful if you have been in a car accident. This said, this is a book definitively recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound advice, especially when you are hurting!
Last year I had a back injury that left me immobile for two months.During that time I read four back books to "empower" me with knowledge and tips for recovery.Dr. Homola's book (now with post-it-notes stuck in numerous chapters) was the most helpful. From helping to determine causes of pain, to outlining simple excercises you can do without buying expensive equipment, this book was the only one I really needed to read. It's a book I'll keep on hand as a helpful resource for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative.
I found this book very informative and have reccomended it to several others. When my herniated disk was causing lots of pain, I was desperate to get some relief. I just happened to find a reference to the author somewhere on the internet and even actually called him. He was very gracious to talk to me, shared some advice and kept me from making a very expensive decision concerning chiropractic care for my entire family. His book is straightforward and understandable. I thank him for the words of advice and his expertice, if your back is giving you trouble in any way, you'll find this book to be quite an interesting read. Thanks Mr. Homola! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent starting point
Unfortunately, I learned almost all the stuff in this book the hard way:through countless doctors, practioners, classes, friends, internet postings and searches, medical journals and books, library visits, etc.The information is pretty current and will give you a very good, balanced view of treating chronic pain, this most mysterious and frustrating of all modern ailments. It provides a wide variety of topics, including how to cope with the emotional stress that accompanies the pain. In an ocean of methods, information, and misinformation, this book is a convenient little tug boat to guide you through the harbor.5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent book

5-0 out of 5 stars Lara Owen Demystifies Magnets
Pain-free with Magnet Therapy is an excellent introduction to the field of magnet therapy. This book is a good starting point for anyone who wants to use magnets to treat a health condition: use it to sort out fact fromfiction when it comes to assessing the claims of magnet manufacturers andsalespeople. Lara Owen has done a great deal of research and in this bookdescribes in plain English what science knows about magnets and what theycan and cannot do. Yet Owen does not exclude the tantalizing possibilitiesthat haven't yet been researched but are suggested by the stories of peoplewho have tried magnets. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A memoir of medical hell
Paula Kamen was twenty-four when a contact lens insertion ignited an intense pain: over ten years later she still has the exact same headache. All In My Head: An Epic Quest To Cure An Unrelenting, Totally Unreasonable And Only Slightly Enlightening Headache is a memoir of medical hell, recounting ineffective remedies, medical frustration, and the problem of chronic pain sufferers. Included in her medical journey are interviews with over a dozen other sufferers of chronicle pain. 'Chronic Daily Headache' is a neurological disorder that affects only four or five percent of the population but its story hasn't been told before. Sufferers will find plenty to learn from here.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Every Doctor Should Have
A friend of mine is a nurse working in a chronic pain ward in a major hospital. They get the cases where conventional doctors have given up. The patients typically have been through the ringer that Ms. Kamen describes, but often with a dependency on hard drugs as well. As Ms. Kamen says Western medicine has a strong tendency to depend on drugs over anything else.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much useful chronic pain information, but a bit overly long and rambling
I am not a chronic headache or pain sufferer, although I know some people who are, so this book may not have meant as much to me as it would to those who do suffer with chronic pain.Nevertheless, I felt I learned a lot from my reading of it, and I could relate to many of the author's experiences with the medical world.I also enjoyed reading about various alternative medicine types that I will probably never try, but have been curious about! The book is well researched and well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone understands
Having only had RSD for 1 year, I found this book to be validating and extremely helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars RSD in real life
I am a kid who has rsd. Life with rsd is as close to hell as it gets. My doctor couldn't explain it, I couldn't explain it to my friends, I couldn't explain it to me: until I read this book. If you have rsd, kid or adult, I highly suggust READING THE BOOK! (It hurts a lot less than having a sympathedic block :)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the first steps to understanding
I was injured on the job Jan. 2004 and since that time have been diagnosed and treated for RSDS. It has limited & possibly stopped my working life, however, being lost in a workman's compensation buracracy, I had to begin to learn myself how to talk to the doctor about RSDS. Not every patient reacts the same, not every patient is limited in what they can do - BUT - every patient will see their life change somewhat due to pain. This book was my beginning as far as reading material to helpme to understand RSDS. It is very informative, easy to read & understand and offers insight on taking control of your situation. It doesn't talk as much as I'd like about treatment plans and options. I have never taken so many drugs before and this book calmed my fears somewhat of becoming an addict. I will continue to learn about this pain syndrome because if I do not, I can't depend on the medical world to do it for me. A very good book to start off with if you have been diagnosed with RSDS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You also need a GOOD Neurologist!
First this book isn't a Doctor (neurologist) so if you don't have one and suffer Migraines Please find a Doctor. I lucked out an found a Neurologist who also suffers Migraines. He was a God send. This Book refers back to what my Doctor told me. I am on medications but went from TWO "MIGRAINES" a week to one or less a month. When I was recommended this Neurologist by my Family Doctor, I had a Migraine for Three Weeks. My Life is now Liveable. This book helped confirm what my Neurologist said and in small bite sized pieces. The Doctor also prescribed of all thingsa Natural supplment that has not reduced the Severity but the Frequency. That is MIGRELIEF made by Quantum ([...]). What I eat seemed to make the Migraines worst. Preventing the onset of a Migraine started by me changing my Diet. The healthy things I ate were some of the triggers to onset. This book is helpful. Here is a site my Doctor uses ([...]) .I am not saying this book alone will heal anyone. Without a good Neurologist you might keep having Migraines. I am now at the point I can sell all my Migraine Books. I am living again and not hiding in a dark room waiting for the migraine to stop. Remenber a Banana that is ripe (Eatable and not bitter) can bring on headaches.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview & Guide
As a 20-year migraine sufferer, I must have 50 books on the subject including textbooks used in medical schools and costing $100 or more. This book gives a great overview and introduction to the person who is trying to find out where to start to take charge of their own medical treatment for Migraine and what questions to ask your Doc to see if he really knows what he is talking about. Most don't.This is a "First Step" book and not a book full of answers, but it will help you find more definitive information and save you wasting your time and money on a Doc who hasn't got a clue as to the discoveries about Migraine using Positive Emission Tomography since the late 1990's.Everything "taught" MDs about Migraine prior to about 1995 is just simply UNTRUE and this book will help you find sources for the latest material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too general, not enough information
I agree with the review that reads, "Save yourself the headache . . ."This book is far too general. If you read the brochures in your doctor's office and some informative information on the web, you already know more than you'll find here.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for the migraine sufferer
This book is one of the better ones I have read on the subject. It is more up to date than some of the other ones out there which is great if you're looking into some of the newer meds (both preventative and acute). The book gives the reader a good overview of migraine and it's history without going too deep into it that the reader stops reading before she gets to the "good stuff".This isn't one of those books that recommends a plan for getting rid of the migraines, rather it is a very informative one that touches on both drugs and alternative ways of treatment.I really like that it was written by two directors of a headache clinic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstandingreference for headache sufferers!!
An exceptional book!!! A definite "must have" for any headache sufferer.Drs. Young and Silberstein have produced an extremely well written book. "Migraine and Other Headaches" speaks directly to the average reader, with all essential terms spelled out in detail. The use of case studies, tables, and illustrations also aid the reader in their understanding of various concepts.5-0 out of 5 stars Not as casual as most on the topic
Drs. William Young and Stephen Silberstein's Migraine And Other Headaches is not as casual as most on the topic: it provides a medically-based analysis of the causes of different types of headaches, defines different migraine experiences, and differentiates between severe headache, tension headache, and migraine. While the reading in Migraine And Other Headaches isn't as easy as some self-help guides on the topic, the focus on uncovering the source of symptoms and various treatment options makes this medical handbook an excellent guide for sufferers seeking better care or more information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
The first two chapters in the book make it worth the cost and the information in any Appendix makes it priceless. A word of caution, this book doesn't cover neck pain, but concentrates on the rest of the spine.I learned so much from keeping my back healthy to how to choose a physician if needed to finding legitimate web sites on the internet. This book is sure to help anyone who either has back or leg pain (often caused by back issues), anyone who loves someone with sort of pain, and those who wish to keep from having such pain.I can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invites readers to consider more fully what is involved in the medical, psychological, spiritual, & personal process of healing
Pain can have a deleterious impact on personality and on relationships. In Living Through Pain: Psalms And The Search For Wholeness, Kristin Swenson (Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, School of World Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University) charts the multifaceted personal and social problems caused by chronic pain and surveys professional efforts to mitigate and manage it. Swenson also consults selected psalms from the Hebrew Bible which demonstrate that the challenge of living through pain is both timely and timeless as these ancient texts offer a vocabulary and a grammar for understanding and expressing the contemporary experience of pain. Pain is a universal experience, and Living Through Pain invites readers to consider more fully what is involved in the medical, psychological, spiritual, and personal process of healing. Highly recommended reading for anyone who suffers, or who has a friend or loved one who suffers, from the debilitating effects of chronic pain.
