2-0 out of 5 stars Depressing and Pessimistic
I bought this book for inspiration on how to help my lower back/leg pain from a herniated disc.Instead it pretty much told me that I had no chance to improve without surgery and just surrender. It was a pessimistic book. do not get it....seemed outdated as well....pictures of exercises were confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Helpful!
This book is so helpful. The doctor tells you what works - with lists of medicines and home treatments and exercises complete with pictures so you can be sure you're doing it right -- and what DOESN'T work.I tried some of the exercises, and they really work! And he tells you what to expect from your doctor. This is a SUPER HELPFUL book, and if your back has ever hurt, you should read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Back Pan Book EVER!!
I have read a lot on back pain, including books that try very hard to convince you that you never need surgery for any kind of back pain problem. Well, this book is a lot more honest. This doctor tells it like it is. Some back problems will only go away if you have surgery. Other problems, you can fix with exericise and sometimes lifestyle changes. I love the drawings for the exercises!! And the x-rays are really helpful, because you can show them to your doctor and ask intelligent questions. GREAT BOOK!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At long last!
An easy-to-read overview of knee problems that actually helped me! I have been dealing with knee pain for the past three years and visited many doctors, specialists and physical therapists - as well as trying many of the "alternative" treatments (massage, herbs, supplements, glucosamine, chiropractors, liniments, etc.) - with very little feeling of hope, empowerment or enlightenment, and very slow progress. I was so happy this book addressed the spiral of frustration when knee problems prevent exercise, which leads to weight gain, which causes more knee problems... And I was thrilled that this book provides many knee-strengthening exercises with easy-to-follow photos and directions. Not everything in the book was applicable - the book covers knee injuries in children, provides photos of various knee surgeries, and talks quite a bit about "baby boomers" (I am only 31) and professional athletes, but I am still very glad I read this book! Considering that it only took me one evening and one morning to finish, and I was able to gain quite a sense of hope and a lot of information, I do recommend it. Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars ACL Pain
The author is very thorough when discussing ACL injuries, surgery, and rehab. However, he doesn't address other types of injuries.I had a meniscus repair and was disappointed to find only a half a paragraph writen about meniscus injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all round book for anyone with knee pain
I've suffered from knee pain for the last three years due to prblems after surgery, which on reflection I would have not done! However, this book out of the others I've bought is the best. Particularly for rehab exercises, good photos with good instructions for each stage within the exercise.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Validate Your Pain-Exposing the Chronic Pain Cover-Up
Run, limp, order it online- but DEFINTELY obtain this book ASAP if you are a pain survivor, work with pain patients or if a loved one suffers from chronic pain. This book is outstanding and sincere. I use it as an invaluable resource and I use it for emotional support. The approach is right-on-target and empowering. The utter contempt pain patients face on a daily basis from the medical community, indifferent (sometimes frustrated) and ignorant doctors and nurses, acquaintances, friends and family is appalling and barbaric. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Patients AND Healthcare Professionals!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real help for CFS/FM sufferers. An awesome book!
I have had CFS/FM for 18 years. I was 29 when it first hit me. I have suffered incredibly all these years. Relapse and recessions over and over again. I've been unable to work. Been in denial all these years, beating myself up thinking it will one day just disappear. Put my life on hold. Felt guilty I wasn't able to socialize as I wanted etc. I have been feeling pretty hopeless after another bad bout. Then, this book was given to me as a gift.Dr. Friedberg, who also, has CFS and suffered for many years, writes in an easy to understand format, with compassion and experience of discovering how to cope with CFS and lead a happier life. The 7 steps DO work! I highly recommend reading it or give it to someone you love you has it.I have researched tons of things about CFS, but I have never understood it like I do now. I have never understood how I can help myself feel better and keep my symptoms at bay. A definite 5 star review. Wonderfully written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Way to go, Fred! Its Feasible, Factual, and Funny!
THIS is a good CFS/FM book! The research, experience, and humor in this book might be motivation you've been missing to move from desperate, survival mode to a more endurable, maybe even enjoyable, way of being. Even as a psychologist trained to spot sabotage and denial, Fred couldn't see his own contributions to his experience of illness and life for years,... and he doesn't blame you if you can't either. Having blind spots may be a natural part of adapting -- we all seem to do it to some degree.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful technique but misleading re PTs and DOs
I am a physical therapist who has been involved in teaching the technique known as Strain and Counterstrain developed by Lawrence Jones, DO on which this book is based. The author is misleading the public by saying no expensive physical therapy required. I have saved patients lots of money by treating them with the technique that fold and hold is based and teaching them how to do it at home. I have to also add that there are many techniques that are really not possible to do on yourself. There are many thousands of Physical Therapists and Osteopaths that use the original technique and have excellent results without great expense as implied by the author.
3-0 out of 5 stars Better than traditional physical therapy
I work on a computer and was having career-threatening pain in my hands.I found this book to be more helpful than traditional physical therapy (strengthening and stretching exercises).I had a co-worker who was evenworse off than I was and also found Anderson's fold and hold technique tobe better than anything his therapists had him try. However, we both stillhad to be careful about how much we typed. We also worried about whetherthe pain would get worse again.4-0 out of 5 stars Technique increases benefits from existing exercise programs
In an easily understood style the author explains to the user just how to locate and then relieve discomfort. I found that it wasn't WHAT I was doing that was wrong, but HOW I was doing my stretches and exercises. "Foldand Hold" has extended my periods of no pain by a significant margin.Low back, neck and shoulder discomfort has diminished significantly since Iadopted the Anderson method. ... Read more

"Healing Pain" delivers.I'm ordering copies for a family member who has MS; an attorney friend specializing in elder law, many of whose clients deal with chronic pain; and a friend studying for the Episcopal priesthood who has already served as a hospital chaplain, meeting many patients coping with pain. These friends don't have time or energy for reading books that come up empty. This one looked promising, based on the author's credentials as an oncologist specializing in pain management. It turns out that she's had cancer herself. On many levels, and in the most personal way, she knows what she's talking about. There are real answers here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - something that makes sense!!
I've been experiencing lower back pain for about 7 years, and like the rest of us, nothing really ever worked. Doctors had no real solutions other than back surgery - which I certainly didn't want to consider. Amazingly, this book has helped and I did not have to go under the knife!! I am very thankful to have discovered this rare gem. The back stretching exercises have really worked, so much so - that after a month of exercising my lower back feels stronger and the pain that typically plagues me is practically gone. Additionally, I found the description of how the back joints, muscles, and bones work together, their make-up, and their proper purpose to be very helpful. For those of you who are at their wits end with back pains and think that the doctor advocating surgery is the only way to get relief - try this book first... it is well worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Pain Before It Manages You

1-0 out of 5 stars A LAUNDRY LIST OF PAIN TREATMENTS BUT NO EVALUATION OF THEIR EFFECTIVENESS
This book was really boring to read for me.It spent a lot of time trying to define what pain was and all, and then it went to this big list of alternative treatments - they just listed all the possible treatments, but they didn't evaluate them further, they didn't show how effective each treatment was, you were like supposed to guess one - try it and if it helped you great and if not then try another one. - then the whole premise is to block out the pain mentally, but the problem with pain is there is usually a reason, and just because you haven't found the reason doesn't mean there isn't a problem.I like the idea of refusing to acknowledge it and let it dominate your life and conversation - giving it more power than it needs, but the book doesn' do a good job dealing with that either.it just plain lacks significan't detail.honestly all this book is - is an outline of their 16 day program. They don't give any more details of the topics covered in the program, and this is just a summary of what they do.But what are you paying this money for the book for - the brochure of the program tells you as much as this book does, and in fact when I checked out the program they told me more information just at my 30 minute meeting with them than they covered in this whole book. The book was fairly worthless and not worth the money. The ideas are good, but there's no information to back it up. If you want more you have to enroll in their program. The book is not worth the money.I wish they would have done a better job and given the book more details, but then if they did that you wouldn't need to pay the big bucks to enroll in their program.I feel pretty ripped off that I bought this book ... I read this book when it first came out.I would highly recommend it to any health care professional, any sufferer, or any relative of any sufferer.Society has come a long way over the years.Around 1990 I took a copy of one Dr. Jay Goldstein's books on chronic fatigue to a lecture on another subject. One of the other attendees picked it up, read the title, and disdainfully tossed in back on the table declaring, "Chronic fatigue? There is no such thing. It's only depression." On the other hand, myths are still all too common.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read if you have ME/CFS
This book really gives you an understanding of how and why ME/CFS has been stigmatized, ridiculed and ignored as much as it has. It makes it very clear that it was not a mistake or an oversight at all but that it was in fact utterly deliberate. The pure stupidity and lack of basic human compassion involved is astounding. It's important to know how we've ended up in this mess so we can see how we might get ourselves out I think. It's also important that we not underestimate how low these people will go - its lower than you could even imagine.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work on Chronic Fatigue
This is the most informative book I've read on Chronic Fatigue. The reading is dry at times, but very informative. This book is about the Center for Disease Control (CDC) involvement in investigating CFS up to the date when the CDC was found quilty of misappropriation of funding for CFS research.Anyone new to the illness should have this book in their library, even if it is just used for references. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars all about lifestyle changes
If you are looking to cure your migraines, you may want to check this book out.Since my sister has been getting migraines for the last 16 or so years, I have been telling her some of these things to get rid of them. Now that I suffer them as often as she does, I can't say that I have practiced what I preached, but I do believe that Zuzana Bic has the right idea of prevention through changes to your lifestyle.Basically, eat better, reduce stress, and get regular exercise. But she goes into detail to help the reader understand the physiology of the migraine disease and how changing your lifestyle will effect your migraines. If someone just told me that I needed to change these things, I would want to know how this would work. This book tells you.I do plan to follow her advise, and I like that it is not an elimination diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Migraines for 30 years, until reading this book!
This book is amazing! I had migraines for 30 years until reading this book. Over the years I tried every drug on the market, ending with Imitrex then Amerge. Even with Amerge I started half of all my days with a migraine. Now I have control over them and I no longer have them. Don't think that because you already eat well and are not overweight that the book won't help. I ate a good diet and wasn't overweight... I still had migraines and the book explained why. The Publishers Weekly review statement that "Their program, however, may seem too simplified and too general for longtime headache sufferers" is way off base! It's exactly what long term headache suffers need!

1-0 out of 5 stars Marketing Rhetoric
This book is nothing more than a lengthy brochure written by chiropractors to promote the sale of continuing education seminars to other chiropractors. As one of the prior reviewers stated, there is NO INSTRUCTION on how to provide or perform an "ART" technique. The bulk of the book is simply a review of common repetitive strain injuries and treatment options which are common physical therapy techniques.
