4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable tool for accelerated healing
i purchased this CD for my daughter to listen to before, during and after her reconstructive knee surgery. Her portable CD player broke a few days after her surgery so we cant know if her healing would've been quicker if she had listened more frequently.I would recommend it for pre-surgery relaxation however.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent relaxation cd
Better than other cds I've heard in this genre. She has a non-irritating voice and manner, so I could get into the relaxation. I use it every night to go to sleep, and remembering the method helps me with anxiety during the day. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
The 1997 Sounds True cassette tape version is so much better than this watered-down, tired-sounding CD and book. After using the taped version, which has four longish guided meditations and is so inspiring and helpful, the very brief guidance for the meditations on the CD version gives the impression that the author became bored or burnt out with teaching. I will continue to use the the cassette tapes and will throw out the more recent CD and book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
Shinzen's meditations on pain have changed my life.I deal with pain on a regular basis and I use Shinzen's meditations all the time.I love this book so much I have bought many copies to give away as gifts.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANYONE DEALING WITH PAIN.

5-0 out of 5 stars equinimity is key.
Here pain is synonymous with any uncomfortable body sensation, such as "anger, fear, sadness, embarrassment, impatience, guilt, confusion, jealousy...". If you are still in your body, then you will have these sensations and need to manange it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and helpful addition to the literature on chronic illness and anxiety
This is a wonderful addition to the literature on anxiety and chronic illness. The wisdom here is invaluable, and it is expressed in such a way that I think people with these kinds of chronic symptoms can't help but recognize their own thought patterns here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Dr St Amand
A friend referred me to this book and I am so grateful to God. I was diagnosed with FMS at the start of the year but didn't know much at all about it. Seems noone really knows how to treat it in Australia - just treat the symptoms and wait it out. I have found this book helpful because (a) for the first time I knew a lifetime of atypical symptoms actually are quite typical FMS (b) it gave me an action plan (that I am currently undetaking) and (c) it was easy enough for me to read; AND(d) it was technical enough for my doctor to read and follow through on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book no longer in print
As the author of this book, ISBN 0446675121, I must say it is no longer in print. A new edition, ISBN 0-446-69444-4, was released in January 2006 to correct inaccuracies and to update data. It's time Amazon showed the new cover under "Fibromyalgia" and blended the two editions into display.

A 'MUST buy' if you know you have fibromyalgia (FM) or think you may have this disease! If FM has taken away your functional value, this book is for you!Medical advice that is given for FM is: exercise, rest and drugs given for depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, pain, IBS, and too many other complaints to list. For all those that haven't found any of these things to help or found that they did help, for awhile, only to see the same complaints reappear and the appearance of new ones...THIS book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Plan that works
I figured out my body type from the information in the book and did the appropriate exercises. The exercises are not hard and are not very time consuming.I have several posteral issues that I've had all my life. After a couple of weeks I could feel that my body had changed - not that I lost weight, but that things were in different places.Later I noticed more changes. It's really helped with my postural issues - something no other exercise program had done.I'd recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any back pain patient or doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Full Of Pain-Free Alternatives
This is an exceptional book for Chronic Pain sufferers seeking modern day therapy and answers to all of their questions which most doctors have no time to answer. Dr Dillard is incredibly knowledgable and covers all avenues to help you and your doctors agree on what treatments are right for you. If you suffer with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Migraines, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Arthritis or other debilitating pains, then I highly recommend this very positive and informative book. You will refer to it over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Michael L. Johnson
An excellent book!!!Dr. Dillard does a great job with his in-depth explanations of chronic pain and its various treatment protocols. In my 21 years of private practice have treated many cases in which patients who suffered from chronic pain were accused of "faking it" by their doctors.Chronic pain is REAL!!In my humble opinion, medicine does a great job in the treatment of acute care ( broken bones, heart attacks, strokes, etc.) but drops the ball when it comes to the chronic pain patient.Dr. Dillard shows you how to get back in the game!5-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Pain Management by James Dillard

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love MSM
MSM is wonderful for me.I have taken MSM for nearly 2 years now (off and on). I would quit taking it, just to see what would happen. It wouldn't take long before my pain and stiffness would return to my knees. I wouldn't want to go through life without MSM. I am able to go through life without pain in my knees when I take MSM on a regular schedule. I have had no problems taking MSM and I take 12,000 mg. a day. I use a powder MSM that I put in my water, which also encourages me to drink the water I need daily. I even use a MSM soap and lotion for my skin.It has helped my skin alot. I can't say enough good things about MSM. This is the first book I bought about MSM and would recommend it to anyone. I've also read many other papers and articles on MSM, plus I've read alot on the internet about MSM. In fact I've bought this book to give to other people. I am always telling the wonders of MSM to people. I wish you well and happy health.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is an odd book
This is an odd book.He seems to talk out of both sides of his mouth:he tells you to use good ergonomic habits on one page, and on the next one to change the height of your chair, keyboard, etc., frequently so that you're not always "in the box" that makes everything be at the "right" angle.A good editor might have improved this book substantially.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some ok advice; some downright silly commentary
First, nearly every exercise Egoscue includes here has been borrowed or adapted from Yoga -- either from Asanas or restorative poses. He pretty much says so, but he doesn't say the Yogic work is more thorough. He does have some really goofy comments such as there is not benefit from ergonomic computer devices.A good ergonomic keyboard places your wrist flexion at the proper angle, and your fingers are not cramped as with traditional keyboards.Another weird comment is his rationale for why typist in the old days didn't get carpal tunnel. He claims it is because people were stronger then.I don't think so, considering the huge leap in women sports in high school & college. The true reason is because the old typewriters had no place to rest the wrists, a habit nowadays that puts pressure right on the carpal tunnel area.He does make one good common sense observation that the human body was designed to move around and not be constricted, and the less the body is in contact with a chair or any other object for long periods of time, the less stress on the body. All in all, a very skimpy book that could have been a 10 page brochure with a poster sized pull out for the exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars It really works -- but only if you take the time!
Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time -- more than an hour for people who use PCs all day -- but the results are amazing. The biggest problem with this book can only addressed by the reader:this advice does you no good unless you lay down and do the E-cises.Don't let the lengthy time daunt you though -- the time required shrinks after a few weeks, and the relief is well worth it.The 5-minute stretches are helpful, too.The reviewers who didn't like this book all sound like they never actually tried the E-cises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource - Hope and Help to Get a Grip on RA
This book is awesome. I only wish I had known about it sooner! I've had RA for 15 years, and was a patient in the clinical trial for Enbrel. Enbrel gave me back my life. But after 7 years, the effect has tapered off even after my rheumy added methotrexate. Last appointment, he said we ought to think about changing to a different TNF blocker. He recommended Remicade, which is an IV treatment, and told me to think about it. I wasn't quite sure what to think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
This is an incredible book on fibromyalgia written by an MD who actually has the disorder. In my opinion, it is a "must have" for everybody with FMS, their health care practitioners, and their significant others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Information on FM
This is the most easy to understand and best compiled information I have on Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain. Recently I have been having a lot of "spells" with A-Fib and "chest" pain. All my test on my heart show the heart is in excellant condition. I had not referred to this book in awhile but when I dusted it off I found the answers to the problems I have been experiencing. Especially in the section "What to tell your Cardiologist" and "What to tell the Emergency Room Drs". It is great to know your heart checks out in "great condition" and that there is an answer to why you are experiencing what you are experiencing. Now I know what course I need to take and I am reassured of no heart problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Michael L. Johnson
"The Fibromyalgia Advocate" along with "Fibromyalgia and Chronic Mypfascial Pain" are two must haves if you or someone you love suffers from FMS.The pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia is REAL and it is NOT all in the patient's head (IAIYH) as some doctors may suggest.FMS patients are suffering and suffering miserably. These two books are wonderful resources for the FMS patient and family.I use them in my patient lending library in my office.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, I got better relief from Borders Cafe than a massage
I've been having back pain in the morning for the last few months after some furniture moving. I stopped at Borders for a coffee and picked this up to read (ok, I'm shameless). After about an hour with the book, I developed a game plan for dealing with the backache which I learned is of a very common garden type. It might be too early to declare victory but I woke this morning with almost no pain after sleeping in the prescribed position with a heating pad and taking a few NSAIDS before bed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Only one reservation - be careful doing the exercises.
Overall, a very informative book, as everyone else says. My only reservation - be careful doing the exercises in the book. The author also has a warning about this - he says "at no point during your back exercise program, should you feel that you are straining...to the point of significantly increasing your pain."

The `Pain Cure' is a valuable resource empowering you with tools and information for controlling your pain and regaining your life.
5-0 out of 5 stars A lifetime plan
This program gives a body, mind, and spiritual (soul) intensive in a sensible and interesting manner. It is delivered by the doctor who gave us Brain Longevity, and it is no wonder that it follows through with a complete and doable program aimedindeed at pain in the human body. He absolutely and logicallyproves that pain does not exist alone at the site of the pain, but lives within us. It is a thoughtful, and non-invasive book.I feel this book is always there for me, as a reference and a thoughtful,research-basedand compassionate friend.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wonder How This Innovative Therapy Worked, or Did It?
To endure life's inevitable roadblocks, we have to strive not for perfection, but contentment, and miraculously all the pain will go away -- for a while. What he calls "curing" I call "coping with."There is no cure for the hardships we all encounter along the way -- becoming a hermit is even worse, as you dwell on what's wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting - I loved it!
First, if you have read Dr. Drew's book "Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Back Together" then I would recommend this book if you are further interested addiction.
1-0 out of 5 stars More self promtion andmisinformation
Pinsky should do his reseach better less than 1 % of all paitentsprescibed narcotic pain reliversbecome even close to being addicted. Pinsky would also know that long term use of NSAIDS cause seriousand fatal effects with in a few weeks . He shouldknow the difference between addction a social construct and depandancy a biologicalaction . and psudoaddcition due to the pain reliever not working .
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
I loved Drew's other book, Cracked, and was hoping for some useful information about Oxycontin in here.I do take this drug periodically and was wondering about some of the more odd side effects (hearing issues, sleep disturbances, overheating, and anxiety), and basically just wanted to know all about it from the guy who knows it all. Unfortunately, almost none of the book is about Oxycontin. It mostly details the addiction process and the various detox treatments.Worse, only the very first section is actually written by Drew (!), so this book is a tease if you're even partly in it for him.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a journalist and Iyengar Yoga Teacher who uses yoga for people with back problems, I was excited to see this new book by a physician and someone who claims to have studied with BKS Iyengar. The reality was a disappointment for a number of reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ
Whether you have back pain or not, this book is written by two Doctors that know their stuff. Not only it is it one of the most simply written but it also goes into medical detail that would cost you lots. It is presented in a very logical way and easy to follow while getting to the very heart of possible back pain and the exact way to treat it. Even if you are, for some reason, anti-Yoga, this book shows stretches that are directly related to having a healthy and strong back.I would add to the title that the book can also prevent back problems, and this can be as IMPORTANT as ever. PREVENTION as opposed to treating is a blessing and if you have that situation, read this book. Amazingly simple for those unfamiliar to Yoga. Again, A GREAT READ

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
An excellent book, neatly divided into two parts, the first part describing succinctly yoga and back pain and the second part suggesting poses for nine different diagnoses.Having suffered severe crippling leg pains that my general practioner finally diagnosed as relating to my back, I sought relief.Relief in the Stretch opened up a whole new world for me.It suggested Iyengar yoga, a form of yoga that focuses on the accuracy of poses.I started seeing an Iyengar yoga teacher and concurrently reading and rereading this book.I learn that yoga is the right thing for chronic pain.It does indeed "increase flexibility, strengthening muscles and bones, increasing range of motion, sharpening focus, heightening self-awareness, and producing calm."There are numerous helpful medical tidbits, such as when one muscles flexes another muscle relaxes: "every time the biceps contracts . . . its opposite, the triceps . . . must relax." When I tighten my abdominal muscles I relax the muscles in my back, the muscles that are partly the cause of my pain.I learned that a patient has symptoms, i.e. sharp pains in my leg in my case, but that the doctor needs signs todiagnose the cause, i.e. the films from an MRI. Nine different types of back pain are discussed (including Herniated Discs, Arthritis, Sacroliac Joint Derangement, Pirformis Syndrome and Weight Control) with yoga poses for each.Everytime I reread a chapter I discover something new.If you have back problems, this is not just a book to buy, read and shelve in your library.Rather it is also a book that will be a continuing source of information as you work at obtaining long-term relief through yoga. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to take back your Power !
This book is an easy can do book for anyone suffering from pain and unable to get their life back. It not only teaches, but also reminds us of the life we had before pain took over our day to day living, leaving us embroiled in medication and non activity which just makes things worse. Get it. USE IT. Do not JUST READ it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid information, readable text - and patient-centered
There are many pain management books on the market - often they offer the reader 'the cure', or 'ways to reduce your pain', leaving the person who follows the directions yet doesn't find their pain reduces feeling frustrated, helpless and often hopeless. This book is different. It acknowledges that pain interferes with so much in life, and offers sensible, research-based strategies that people can follow for themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars A ten-step program for learning to live and minimize chronic pain
Written by doctors with years of experience in the assessment and treatment of people with chronic pain, The Pain Survival Guide: How to Reclaim Your Life is a ten-step program for learning to live and minimize chronic pain, emphasizing the importance of gradual behavior changes. Chapters discuss relaxation tips, ways to reduce fatigue, the importance of not allowing pain to sabotage personal relationships, making adjustments in behavior, bolstering self-confidence, coping with setbacks, and much more. The Pain Survival Guide also denounces common myths about pain, and emphasizes the following truths: pain is not a reliable signal of injury; the absence of injury or disease does not mean that one's pain is not real; pain should always be taken seriously; drugs are not always the best or only way to treat pain; and having pain for a long time does not mean that one's condition is beyond treatment. An index rounds out this highly accessible and practical and serious-minded resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sage advice for migraine sufferers
I've been suffering with migraines for over thirty years. I've had to structure my life around coping with them. Over the years I've tried so many things: medicines, diets, managing my eating and sleeping schedule, even some alternative medicine (accupuncture, biofeedback). I found ways to avoid triggers and ride out the migraines, but they were taking their toll on my life, work and family.
5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life
I can't believe that none of my previous doctors, including several neurologists, never mentioned most of the advice I found in this remarkable book. Not only my migrianes are gone, my PMS symptoms disappeared. If I forget to take my supplements, after a few days both my migraines and PMS return.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief After 34 Years!
I have been a migraine sufferer for most of my life, and have explored treatment after treatment (both mainstream and alternative) to alleviate the frequency and severity. After reading this book 8 months ago, and beginning all the non-prescription supplements recommended by Dr. Mauskop, I can gratefully acknowledge that I have a tremendous reduction in the frequency of attacks!Until I had been on the supplements for 3 months, I had been getting 3-5 migraines each week, and loading up on Imitrex.I now have just a few migraines each month, which is something I had thought was an impossibility!Plus, when I do get a migraine, they tend to respond to half the dose of Imitrex I was taking in the past.In addition, while I had been aware of and adhering to the dietary changes recommended in the book fo
