5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Jim Johnson
Physical therapist (P.T.) Jim Johnson's The Multifidus Back Pain Solution is a straight forward, educational and hope inspiring read that has been effective in helping me address my lower back and leg nerve pain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Approaches Used For Back Therapy
I found this book to be an excellent guide and would highly recommend it to anyone starting their own journey in addressing a back injury. It's short, but it has a lot of good information very well presented. While the author does focus on the multifidus muscle, the book gives a very objective overview of how to handle back problems in general, from generic lower back pain to pain associated with herniated disks. He also helps lay people understand how the medical profession categorizes back injuries to put them in their proper scope. The book describes several exercises, but not anything beyond the scope of the multifidus.More exercises would have been a great addition, but the book isn't about all back exercises.Anyone with a serious back injury should see a physical therapist for guidance. What I found most useful in the book is the short mention of steroid injections (epidural), which seem to be questionably useful. The author could have elaborated more on the appropriateness of them, as it's hard to compare your own situation with those in studies (ie: how many millimeters is the disk bulging).I also liked the fact that the author provided select references for the types of issues most lay people would be interested in viewing. In my own experience, I've learned that a muscle imbalance is most likely the cause of my L5-S1 herniated disk, and it took 14 weeks and a good number of visits with various practitioners to come to that conclusion.

4-0 out of 5 stars the little know multifidus muscle
I had 2 herniated discs.Went through chiro, massage, p.t., cortisone injections....then i read this book and began following the exercises in it.The MacKenzie method DID NOT work for me, it only created more pain. This book was extremely helpful to me.Surprisingly, my massage therapist recommended it, not my physical therapist, orthopeadic, or chiropractor.I am fully healed without surgery and running marathons!I recommend this book to any average person who wants to have a better understanding of how to strengthen your back and core! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Buy newer edition!
Dr. Sarno's concept is sound, but this is his first report, rather old. There are two newer books, the best of which, of course, is the 2006 "The Divided Mind : The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders", which I highly recommend.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
I should have listened to the people who wrote negative reviews, this book is a complete and total ripoff, it tells you nothing , save your money and buy a bottle of wine instead

1-0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?
Did I miss something?Clearly from the title alone Dr. Sarno believes tension and tightening of muscles is the cause of most back/leg pain.Where is the chapter that gives you steps to change this?!I didn't need to buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
After reading all the 5 star reviews for the predecessor (Pain Free) to this book," I checked it out at the library to see if the program really worked. The program sounded to good to be true, but the volume of 5 star reviews really made me want to try it out. After about a week and a half on the program, I no longer had bad arthritus pain in my wrist, and was able to get off the glucosamine. Glucosamine worked for me, but it is expensive. Since doing the exercises, my shoulder pain isalso much less severe.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource-Poor binding
The book is an incredible resource for women. It gives a new paradigm for viewing our bodies and for believing in the possibility of health. We are well designed, we just need to use our bodies according to the design!
3-0 out of 5 stars Designed for general health, not specific problems
I checked out three of Egoscue and Gittines' books from the library today.I read "Pain Free for Women" first.I have a few thoughts about it:

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good book in need of a copyeditor
If you're already familiar with the terms 'lateral' and 'medial', then you'll know that "Latoral joint Compartment" in figure 2-1A&B on p. 29 is probably not what they meant, especially since it's across from the "Medial joint Compartment" in the same illustration. And then again on p. 31 in figure 2-3A&B there is the "Later Menicus" [Lateral Meniscus] across from the "Medial Meniscus"
4-0 out of 5 stars Heal Your Knees
I bought this book because I have a damaged miniscus in my knee. This book allowed me to understand what exactly went wrong with my knee.It enabled me to understand my surgeon when he explained my options. It is a good value and well worth the asking price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book - works for me
I'm a golfer that has frequently had some degree of lower back pain.Suffered a severe lower back strain four months ago.Bought the book and started the routine after that.It has made a big difference for me.My back feels better than it has in years.I strongly recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD WHIPPING
This is an excellent book for dealing with this common problem afflicting so many people but it doesn't explain why Pilate ordered Jesus to be whipped. That is definitely not the way to relieve back pain!

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtfulm, safe process, but does it work????
I felt that Dr. Vad's approach was safe and logical. He has you perform easy basic exercises for some time, and then graduate to more strenuous exercises.I must say, though, as someone is in pretty fair physical condition to begin with, I felt the exercises were too basic, and not at all challenging. There didn't seem to be an abundance of info on treatments or back pain causes either.I guess though, the real proof is, "Did it work? Did following the program letter for letter improve my back pain?"And, in my case, which of course is very individual, after following the program to the "T" for 8 weeks, it really did nothing me.Decent book, but I'm still looking for the magic bullet. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain
This manual is concise and easy to use.I bought it to use as a ready-reference in my practice and am very happy with the presentation. It can be flicked through quickly to find the relevant muscle or group you are evaluating and the text is easy to follow giving the main points under headings. The drawings are excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for back pain sufferers.Simple and effective!
This is a wonderful well illustrated book with easy to perform exercises that are effective for back pain. The descriptions are easy to follow and there is not an overwhelming amount of detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great entry-level text for cranky backs
I had purchased Ungaro's Body in Motion and Siler's Pilates Body to begin doing pilates, as they were generally the most respected texts. But my back couldn't handle the most basic level of some of the introductory exercises. This book, however, along with King and Green's Back Strengthening Workout, has given me a sequence of exercises and modifications that (I can already feel after two weeks of use) will get me where I want to be. The introduction to this book is a little too technical on anatomical detail, and the Ungaro and Siler books are superior in terms of illustration and textual guidance at the advanced levels, but without this I'd be quitting and/or hurting before I ever got going with Pilates.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pilates Basics
If you ever taken a mat class you will know these exercises front and back, if you haven't then this very basic book will show you how to do the moves without hurting yourself for the most part. The straight leg positions are not the most comfortable position to be in when your low back hurts you. I like the floor movements on your back. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Dr. Batmanghelidj received his formal medical education atSt. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University. He providesfor the layman a clear and comprehensive book on the origins of chronicpain. His clinical and scientific research exposes, for the firsttime, that recurring "chronic pains" are a signal system of the bodyindicating severe general or local dehydration. Most of these painscan be relieved simply by drinking water. Instead, however, the patientoften receives costly pharmaceutical medications which treat ratherthan cure. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What works?
Picked this book up with a few other to gain more information on my on and off again back problems. You know how it is if you are thinking of getting this type of book. You went to all the doctors in your town and tried all the exercisesthey give you to do on the floor. I even spent thousands on massage therapy, a that helpedfor a while. But every time I went to exercise my back would hurt again. Well this is the year, I am not getting any younger, so I bought a collection of books over the last month and this is one of them i recommend for people who are tired of thier pain and want to do something about it. The other books are on exercises that have helped mevery much and I am not running out of exercises to do.Good luck, hope this helps

4-0 out of 5 stars Exercising

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple techniques create amazing results.
This remarkable little book may change the way you think about knee pain. Instead of focusing on pain symptoms and where they originate, the author focuses on what your knee does - and how to improve those functions with simple exercises. The only anatomy lesson you need is to know where your quadriceps and hamstring muscles are - front and rear of your thigh respectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars what you need and nothing extra
This book doesn't waste your time - it just reports what research says has been effective and then lays out a simple routine of exercises you can do at home, with extensions if you want to go further.I've had good results from following basically the same routine he suggests - it's given me back hope that fifty-year-old knees can survive a running program after all, and it's helped me avoid surgery which probably wasn't needed. It also cut through a lot of conflicting and confusing diagnoses and went straight to advice on how to avoid pain - who cares about the exact cause if it goes away?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Besides being an easy read, I found this book to be a common sense approach to the care of your knees. With disability in both of my knees, I found the author's approach very beneficial and would highly recommend this book to anyone with knee problems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive yet understandable
The book covered a lot of ground, yet was easy to understand and read. You will definitely understand more about the types of problems prolo handles, and how it works. Highly recommended to anybody considering this form of treatment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Promising but am still somewhat skeptical
I have suffered from dire chronic muscular pain in my neck and shoulder and low buttocks regions for well over two years and it's been hell to say the least. I have done everything imaginable to fight this - I have seen three accupuncturists, three massage therapists and four physical therapists, taken NSAIDs, RICE techinques and yet my pain still persists.5-0 out of 5 stars prolo Miracle!!!
I found this book and the treatment of Prolo for my wife. She had suffered for two years after a fall that caused chronic whiplash syndrome. She was off of work for months at a time and had severe headaches, vertigo, insomnia, terrible constant migraines, memory loss, shooting pains in arms, neck, and shoulder, as well as depression. We had mri's, cat scans, x- rays, accupuncture, accupressure, physical therapy, chiro., and nothing helped. Other doctors said there was nothing wrong and she was faking it!!!! Within days of first treatment we knew something was different. Within 6 weeks she was back at work and has been steadily improving. She is about 90% totally healed after four treatments. Insurance did pay about 75% of the cost also. Buy this book if you have chronic pain, buy it today and start to live again!!!! Dr. Hauser is MY personal hero, he gave me back my wife!!!!!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So much information for less than a co-pay
I am so grateful for this book.I woke up one Sunday morning unable to stand due to severe pain in my upper back and right shoulder.I had an MRI which showed a herniated disk and bulging disks in my neck.I saw an orthopedic doctor and a neurosurgeon, neither of whom provided me with detailed information about my condition. ("You have a ruptured disk.") I got prescriptions for Motrin and physical therapy, and that was about it.When I got this book, I read almost the whole thing in one sitting.Just understanding the anatomy and physiology of my condition was comforting.I have been recovering, and I refer to this book often for information and suggestions.I highly recommend it to anyone with severe neck pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Book, my headaches are gone!
This book is amazing. I did regularly for a week the series of "First Aid Neck Exercises" and my neck related headaches went away.It is super simple to understand and very educational.I know a lot more about necks now.My massage therapist, who has a herniated disk in the neck, is now practicing the exercises and he has seen much improvement. If you have pain in your neck, BUY THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for anyone with neck problems
This book is a truly complete guide to explaining and treating neck problems. Written by an MD in easily understandable language, it does not stop at discussing classical remedies physicians offer for spine problems. It incorporates and validates non-classical methods such as chiropractic manipulations and acupuncture. The best part are the chapters on physical therapy: The exercises are clearly explained and can be understood and performed with or without professional help. I had serious neck pain with nerve involvment, which made it impossible for me to lie on my back without pain. Within a month of doing the exercises(on my own), I am completely pain free and back to my former activities. All of this without one doctor's visit. What a bargain! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Specific, useful methods based on acupuncture and massage
The TRIGGER POINT SELF-CARE MANUAL FOR PAIN-FREE MOVEMENTdiscusses methods of healing and preventing injury to muscles through identification of areas of tightness and restriction and self-care massage and stretching techniques. Any who suffer from muscle pain will find her methods specific and useful, based on her acupuncture and massage background and studies with Janet Travell, MD, a pioneer in pain management.

My son is a musician and has lots of stress and aches from practicing long hours and this book helped him find some of the worst trigger points and allow him to practice longer and more comfortably.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide to self-care practices for promoting a healthier and happier life
Acupuncture and massage practitioner Donna Finando, who specializes in myofascial techniques and has studied pain management with field pioneer Janet Travell, M.D., presents Trigger Point Self-Care Manual For Pain-Free Movement, a guide to self-care practices for promoting a healthier and happier life. Chapters examine the human body muscle by muscle, describing the different aches and pains that can result from stress or injury in each muscle, and teach readers about the "trigger points" in muscles that are particularly susceptible to damage and use pain as a warning sign to prevent even more serious injury. Exercises, stretches, and solid medical advice for taking good care of one's muscles fill this handy guide, written especially for lay readers and illustrated with black-and-white diagrams and red highlights. While the Trigger Point Self-Care Manual cannot replace a doctor's supervision, it is a valuable tool for personal health and maintenance and highly recommended, especially for people leading active lifestyles or those susceptible to muscular stiffness and soreness.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money
I bought the Wharton's Stretching book and liked it, finding it very useful as a martial artist. This book, however, merely rehashes everything in the Stretching book, but in an inferior manner. Although it has photos instead of drawings, the Wharton's Stretch book clearly shows acceptable ranges of motion for each stretch. In addition, the Back Book has a section on training with weights that bordered on ridiculous. The author's clearly know little about neither weight training as therapy nor weight training for strength and flexibility. This book was a real disappointment. Buy their first book, avoid this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works, if you work it!
If a person with back problems reads and follows the advice in this book, their situation will improve. There is no magic fix for back pain, but the vast majority, regardless of the diagnoses, will be reduced or even eliminated by correcting the imbalances in the hips. This book tells how to do this. The imbalances were developed over many years, so it will take some time to overcome them.If you want a healthier back, this is the answer, provided you are willing to put in the time and effort.

I and my wife are physicians. She suffers from lower back problems. This book contains easy to follow picures and directions for the exercises. I was very pleased to see their balanced (and truthful) comments regarding durgs and alternative therapies.I agree with their advice toseek professional opinions as other diseases can mimick lower back problems.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired?
If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, please read Dr. Robert T. Cochran Jr's book, Understanding Chronic Pain: A Doctor Talks To His Patients.I am not a medical professional; I am a 51 year old woman who has, for the past 20 years been diagnosed with painful and exhausting illnesses like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, the Epstein Barr virus, Fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease that required surgery, menstrual problems, and rheumatoid arthritis. As soon as I find a way to ease the pain of one problem, another excruciating painful problem manifests. Some of you may suffer so badly that you can't hold a job. Your family and friends have had to deal with your unpredictable health, so your social life and intimate connections have dwindled to nothing. Unless your employer is incredibly flexible, you either can't hold a job or have to function under the stress of constant pain, worrying about when you'll make the mistake that will get you fired. To top it off, you really don't care because if you are out of work, at least you will be able to get enough rest.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, original, and compassionate help
This is that rare book that will help and inform physicians and patients alike through fascinating and instructive "stories" (case reports.)There are no claims of dramatic breakthroughs but rather a believable success rate that can be raised from the usual 25% or so to more than 50%, which is dramatic when one considers that Dr. Cochran ends up with referrals that have not responded to any number of treatments. The approach Dr. Cochran uses involves an exceptional amount of listening to the whole history, and a willingness to try various combinations of medications and insightful thinking about factors that may trigger or perpetuate chronic pain. Readers can find other books on the subject (see cross references, Amazon), and the scientifically minded can sample controlled studies such as "Combination Therapy for Neuropathic Pain-Which Drugs, Which Combination, Which Patients", New England Journal of Medicine, 352:13, March 31,2005. As a doctor of the same vintage as Dr. Cochran, I agree that the time has arrived to use the insights of modern immunology, i.e. that the body may attack itself in certain diseases (Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc.) in such a way that the "immune" response is counterproductive, analogous to how acute pain may provide protective reactions but chronic pain means that the mechanism has gone awry and is defeating the original purpose.Dr. Cochran describes the likely ways in which this perverted response can occur, and what might work to break the cycle.I have bought an extra copy so I can lend it to willing readers while keeping my original copy readily available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Connecting all the dots of chronic pain
I have suffered chronic pain for over 5+ years and have spent a great deal of time researching the subject.I recently picked up Dr. Cochran's book and spent two days devouring his book. On the third day, I e-mailed him at his web site to explain my chronic pain problems and to my surprise, he contacted me by phone 2 days later!! I was so impressed that I subsequently flew from New Mexico to Nashville to meet with him.Dr. Cochran is a gifted physician who cares deeply for his patients and combined with his gift of listening, his expertise with neuropharmacology and his unsurpassed understanding of chronic pain he was able to come with up with a personal game plan for me. Dr. Cochran's truly understands the mind body connection and the implications that emotions can create havoc with your pain. Dr. Cochran's Book exempilfies "Thinking outside the box". I guarantee that you, the reader will be able to relate to some of his case studies. I highly recommend reading this book.I also suggest that your current or past pain physician has not spoken to some of the issues brought forward by this book. This is necessary reading to those who do suffer from chronic pain.Give a copy to your physician or at the very least discuss the book with them, as well as, your friends and family. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have to agree
I've had FMS for over 7 years and have read tons of books and done a lot of research. This book is the most excellent by far, and is worth it if just for the condensed version of the latest research. All in all this should be a required manual every doctor hands an FMS patient. Please do yourself a favour and buy it. PS - Compliment it with "The Fibromyalgia Advocate" and "Fibromyalgia: The New Integrative Approach : How to Combine the Best of Traditional and Alternative Therapies"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Fibromyalgia
I was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. This book answered all of my questions about the disease and provided me with ways to cope with my illness. The book is well written and packed with information. I highly recommend this book to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be the handbook given to all patients when diagnosed!
This book is outstanding, extremely well written, and very down to earth and reaches everyone no matter where in their journey they are.I run a support group for fibromyalgia and have been diagnosed for over 10 years. This is one of the best books I have read on this topic and have recommended it to all that I come into contact with in the FMS world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!
After going to a conference on Psychotherapy and Mindfulness given by Dr. Ron Siegel, I was inspired to get his book.Having developed back problems (muscle spasms/ "my back went out") a year and a half ago, I was very interested in learning about his approach. While regular yoga has been extraordinarily helpful, I still considered my back vulnerable. This book has challenged this mentality.Since reading this book, I have successfully resumed activities that have I been avoiding since developing back pain. I am more aware of how worrying about hurting my back has made me afraid to use my back in certain ways, and am no longer giving into this worry. This book has changed my mindset regarding back pain and my body. This approach is empowering and I strongly recommend that anyone with a history of back muscle spasms read this book and adopt this method.

2-0 out of 5 stars made light out of some people's genuine pain
Although I agree with the premise that stress can and does cause physical pain and many chronic ailments, there are many of us out there with serious debilitating back problems, that can not be just "willed away" or minimized by meditation and breathing exercises.A small chapter at the end of the book owned up to some of the serious back problems that are, in fact, serious and would need special treatment sometimes (rarely) even surgery.I have a feeling this was inserted as almost an afterthought to prevent any lawsuits from anyone believing you can ignore your serious back problems and get right back to your previous normal life.Unfortunately that's not the case for many people out there who aren't just suffering from muscle spasms and stress.
