3-0 out of 5 stars It's All Academic
Considering that Alison Lurie is an award-winning novelist, I was surprised at the simplistic tone of this novel. As many reviewers have written, the beginning is quite promising;I was instantly captured by the first few paragraphs.Unfortunately, that interest was not sustained.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sly Dig At Academia
Alison Lurie is a gifted, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author, widely known for "The War Between the Tates," which is only one of her brilliant novels.
2-0 out of 5 stars Ultimately a Folly
I love Alison Lurie, but this novel just missed the mark. I didn't care about ANY of the characters. Yes, they are all SUPPOSED to be insipid lying whiners...but I wanted to care just a little bit about what happened to them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Miraculous Back
Easy to read and understand without being overwhelmed by medical
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - something that makes sense!!
I've been experiencing lower back pain for about 7 years, and like the rest of us, nothing really ever worked. Doctors had no real solutions other than back surgery - which I certainly didn't want to consider. Amazingly, this book has helped and I did not have to go under the knife!! I am very thankful to have discovered this rare gem. The back stretching exercises have really worked, so much so - that after a month of exercising my lower back feels stronger and the pain that typically plagues me is practically gone. Additionally, I found the description of how the back joints, muscles, and bones work together, their make-up, and their proper purpose to be very helpful. For those of you who are at their wits end with back pains and think that the doctor advocating surgery is the only way to get relief - try this book first... it is well worth the read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Relieving Sciatica:Using Complementary Medicine to overcome pain of Sciatica
The author gave many different approaches to treating sciatica.I found the book helpful in this vein, but anyone looking for a specific treatment for sciatica should look elsewhere.

This is a good resource for those suffering from sciatica - anything that works for you will certainly be a relief.good Luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
A lot of research was done for this book. It is well organized and written. Most people with long term sciatica are probably familiar with most treatment modalities listed. For those who aren't, it could be overwhelming as there are so many options yet in my experience so much depends on the practitioner. But for many sufferers of sciatica, perhaps there is a nugget here. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Marketing Rhetoric
This book is nothing more than a lengthy brochure written by chiropractors to promote the sale of continuing education seminars to other chiropractors. As one of the prior reviewers stated, there is NO INSTRUCTION on how to provide or perform an "ART" technique. The bulk of the book is simply a review of common repetitive strain injuries and treatment options which are common physical therapy techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the novice!
I thoroughly enjoyed The Back Rub Book; its friendly, themed lessons are a fun way to learn the art of massage. And this is the first massage book I've read which gives advice on ways to *receive* a massage and improve the experience!5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on back massages
This is a great book for people who'd love to give a back massage. As a person who's taken three massage courses at university, I find this book helpful in refining my previously-learned techniques. Also, The Back RubBook has helped me learn some new ways of providing back massages. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Cookbook for Great Massages
The Back Rub Book is a great resource for anyone who wants to make other people feel good. Anne Rush explains a multitude of techniques in easy-to-understand language and provides "recipes" for massagesessions. These sessions have themes (i.e., a wake-up massage, massage forlovers, etc.) as well as specific techniques not found in other massagebooks. (My favorite is the Rocking Horse, which is performed on the back.)I've read quite a few massage books, but this is my favorite by far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Execellent book, written mostly for a health practitioner
This is a great book by a really good author. He is very grounded in science and there are a lot of different exercises.I am someone who is working to overcome back pain and about 50% of this book is too technical for me. Like some other authors talk about, one of the key points in the book is the some back pain is caused by poor posture and alignment of the pelvis. This is central to Pilates as well.I have found this to be true, but correcting it is the tricky part. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.
This is an excellent book to help you fix your back injury if you have been in an auto accident like me. Full of useful tips, and general good advice. It's one of these self-help books that will help you tremendously dealing with the pain and suffering experienced after a personal injury. I am fond of self-help books, self-help websites and other self-help resources too, and this book is on the top of my list (others like this website http://www.settlementcentral.com) have helped me a lot on the legal side of my personal injury claim too. They even talked about chiropractic care as well as providing demand letters and other stuff useful if you have been in a car accident. This said, this is a book definitively recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound advice, especially when you are hurting!
Last year I had a back injury that left me immobile for two months.During that time I read four back books to "empower" me with knowledge and tips for recovery.Dr. Homola's book (now with post-it-notes stuck in numerous chapters) was the most helpful. From helping to determine causes of pain, to outlining simple excercises you can do without buying expensive equipment, this book was the only one I really needed to read. It's a book I'll keep on hand as a helpful resource for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative.
I found this book very informative and have reccomended it to several others. When my herniated disk was causing lots of pain, I was desperate to get some relief. I just happened to find a reference to the author somewhere on the internet and even actually called him. He was very gracious to talk to me, shared some advice and kept me from making a very expensive decision concerning chiropractic care for my entire family. His book is straightforward and understandable. I thank him for the words of advice and his expertice, if your back is giving you trouble in any way, you'll find this book to be quite an interesting read. Thanks Mr. Homola! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is one of the books in "Back Pain"that any spine care specialist should read. I personally feel fortunate to have done it. Six years ago, after finishing reading it( the 3rd edition, 1992), I was basically converted from a GYII physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Resident with little interest in taking care patients with low back pain, because of the lack of knowledge and skill,to someone who started considering a career as spine care specialist. Now, I am a fellowship trained spine interventional specialist, board certified by the American Board ofPhyiscial Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as by the American Board of Pain Medicine, practicing interventional pain management and spine care at the Physicians' Pain Specialists of Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. I am very thankful for this book because it helped me in moving the most important step towards becoming a spine care specialist. The authors did a superb job integrating things such as history, physical exam, spine mechanics, spine impages (X-ray, MRI, CT) together with clinical correlates. It is such an rewarding experience after reading this book to realize that I have achieved the ability to coorelate the spine image findings in X-ray, MR or CT with its spinal anatomical structures and then infer them to their specific clinical presentations. Most of the Chapters were well written, especially those on" Pathology & Pathogenesis of Low Back Pain", "The Site & Nature of the Lesion", "Lumbar Spine Imaging", "Differential Diagnosis of Low Back Pain", "The Three Phases & Three Joints" were extremely well written and informative. It has more lumbar spine images than any other spine care books that I have come across.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work!

2-0 out of 5 stars Book not designed for senior vision
The information and exercises in this book are good...BUT...certainly most of us with osteoporosis are past 60, as I am, and this book is fairly small at 5 1/2 x 8 inches. We need to have the print and illustrations larger, darker, and easier for us seniors to see.My husband agrees with me, and he also found the smaller and lighter print difficult to see and read. That fact didn't seem to be taken into consideration with the creation and publication of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally a life saver!
After being in a car accident, dealing with fractured vertebrae and completing all the required bed rest, I was searching for something that would help me with the healing process.Being secure that I would not cause further injury to my spine by using the book as a guide and support, I began VERY slowly to try Sara Meek's program.I can only say that this book was my life saver. At the beginning I could only partially complete the most basic exercise, but I was determined to succeed. With the help of this program, both the exercises and the sense that I was getting better, I am now able to resume most daily activities and needless to say, my back has gotten straighter!Thank you Ms. Meeks.I hope you see this review.I have been wanting to thank you so much.I don't know how I would have made any progress without your help.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
This is a very good book for people who want to strengthen their backs, especially the upper back, and improve posture. The exercises (one to a page) are clearly explained, but not with too much explanation so you get lost, and the author tells how each exercise helps you. There are simple little drawings of people to show how to do each exercise. The exercises are not difficult, and you do not need to do dozens of repetitions. The book is a good size, not too big, and lays open flat.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
The first two chapters in the book make it worth the cost and the information in any Appendix makes it priceless. A word of caution, this book doesn't cover neck pain, but concentrates on the rest of the spine.I learned so much from keeping my back healthy to how to choose a physician if needed to finding legitimate web sites on the internet. This book is sure to help anyone who either has back or leg pain (often caused by back issues), anyone who loves someone with sort of pain, and those who wish to keep from having such pain.I can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using this book took me from crippled to good as new
Around the time of my pregnancy in 1995 I developed pain throughout my body that eventually reached a point where almost all the activities in life I loved were no longer available, and trying to get well became an obsession.
5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!
I had an aching back for about five years, mostly in my lower back and sometines in my mid and upper back. I made the usual rounds between doctors, specialists, chiropractors, accupuncturists, and so on. The pain was always there, sometimes better sometimes worse. I used to wake up in pain and stiff most mornings.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing .Advice possibly damaging.
