5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful adjunct to Gyrotonic
This year, I experienced an extremely painful bout of sciatica.Although the pain was quickly alleviated through a combination of acupuncture and deep tissue massage, I could sense that a "third leg" of my treatment was missing. My acupuncturist suggested Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis.After taking a dozen Gyrotonic private lessons, I was amazed by the amount of body awareness that had been taught to me, and even more amazed that my body remembered it from lesson to lesson. This book sounded as if it would be able to clarify (at least partially) how this process happens. And indeed it has.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I have enjoyed the book.It is very informative. Will continue to use and enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, holistic approach
"The Pain-Free Back" is a comprehensive examination of back pain and what you can do about it.The authors discuss various symptoms and when you should be concerned that it might be something serious. This includes answering the very important question "When do you try to treat it yourself and when do you call a doctor?"5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend to men and women with back pain
I read this book to get ideas on how to stop back pain. While I'm not a proponent of natural or complementary therapies, these doctors convinced me that taking control of my lifestyle habits was the only way to end the pain. I even went as far as to start taking the natural dietary supplements glucosamine and SAM-e (recommended in the book). Other anti-inflammatory medications had caused a horrible stomach condition, and the natural supplements ease the pain and have allowed me to be more active and start walking again with my wife and kids. The review of causes of back pain was most helpful, and I began to question whether my primary care doctor had really diagnosed my pain correctly. A consultation with a rheumatologist confirmed that I had a form of arthritis common to men instead of pulled muscles. This book urged me to seek answers and reclaim an active life. Thank you. I must add that this book is not hype or sham. I'm cautious of books such as that. This book is highly credible by two renowned doctors and experts in their respective fields. I'm now getting the Pain-Free Arthritis book they wrote for more information on my back condition. Good luck. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Book not worth the money
I go in for surgery for my herniated disk in two days and nothing I read in this book informed me, encouraged me, or discouraged me from my decision. It's a very basic book if you know absolutely nothing about back pain, but as for any practical advice, there's very little. I especially looked for advice on exercises that are safe to do after surgery, but found none. What little info there is also seems very dated. I would have liked to see more than a tiny bit of info on types of surgery, etc. If the authors had spent their time on more research instead of ranting against managed health care, this might have been a decent and informative book. My advice: spend your money on another, more detailed and up-to-date book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those in pain
If you are going to read one book about your sciatica or low back pain, this should be it. The book is very well balanced and covers a lot of ground without getting bogged down in details. It covers the medical background of back problems without becoming a medical text. There are also hints on types of treatments available and how to make rational decisions about what treatment is best for your situation. There are many, many back books out there but this is one of the best written.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Lower Back Pain Diagnosis Tools Available
After 5 days of journaling my lower back pain signs and symptoms - I was able to use this book and diagnose my back injury as Spinal Stenosis - Due to a major disc herniated at the L4-L5 inside the vertebral canal. For me the diagnosis was not good - immediate surgery, but as I tore through this book with ease, cover to cover within a 24hr period, I can see how this book is a must buy for those who have back problems several times a year and have not diagnosed the true underlying cause of the pain.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars sherri reader with neck pain
Someone bought this book for me from my yoga class and I thought I would pick up a few new tips. It was okay nothing to write home about- maybe good for someone who doesn't know how to exercise. There are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars got me moving again
While no book could replace hands on instruction, this book comes close. This is the book that got me moving again after years of struggle with chronic back pain.Rather than a "one size fits all" approach, the book encourages one to review the evidence of your body and carefully approach the problem.I wonder where I would be if I hadn't run into this book a few years ago.Try it, it may save your back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide!
Very complete book with daily routines in the back. The description of exercises is extremely thorough.Much more complete than many other books out there.I have been through some rough times with my back and shoulders, and have searched widely for guidance to help me take care of myself - this one is a keeper.Doctors and Chiropractors are wonderful - but the ultimate responsibility is ours. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
In 1970 (yes, I'm somewhat of an old fart) I suffered from an acute case of lower back pain. Luckily, Maggie's Back Book was then widely available. It didn't hurt that at that time Maggie also had her PBS show "Maggie and the Beautiful Machine", and thus was well known (certainly, here in Cambridge). I read it while in bed, on my back, and in pain. I decided to resist the doctor's recommendation for a spinal fusion operation. The injury healed over time, with the help of Maggie's good advice.5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book!
If you are having back problems, read this book. I read an earlier edition a long time ago and have followed the recommended exercises ever since. The result: very few episodes of serious back pain in 16 years. Maggie was one of the first people to publicize the importance of exercise for dealing with and preventing back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best resource on sacroiliac problems available
This book brings together the greatest amount of current clinical and basic science information on the importance of the pelvis, and particularly, the sacroiliac joints, and their relation to low back pain. The traditional medical model has assumed for years that only spinalstructures, such as the discs and facet joints, are important in low backpain syndrome. This book clearly identifies the role of the sacroiliacjoints in producing low back pain and provides information on bothconservative and surgical treatment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
To the author, a great big THANK YOU! I have read dozens of books about back pain, been to physiotherapists and doctors, taken medication and tried numerous exercise programs, and nothing worked. However, thanks to this book, I finally have relief from long-term, chronic back pain.(Herniated disk in lower back.)
5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
Great investment for those with back pain.Just from bits and pieces of what I have read and practiced so far, I've been able to recover from a recent back injury in a very short period of time and will hopefully lead to a pain-free back for life.

What I appreciated most about this book was it's balanced approach to treating back
5-0 out of 5 stars My back problems solved
This book is an easy-to-read overview of back problems that actually helped me tremendously! I have been dealing with back pain for the past several years and visited many doctors, specialists and physical therapists as well as trying many of the "alternative" treatments such as massage, herbs, supplements, glucosamine, chiropractors, liniments and yes even drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex with minor improvement, but never a long-term cure. I was pleased that this book provides many back-strengthening exercises with easy-to-follow photos and directions. I am very glad I read this book and highly recommend it as it has provided me my first long-term relief in years. Happy reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toprehabilitation book on the market
As a Licensed acupuncturist focusing on muskuloskeletal pain, I am always looking for pragmatic, integrative data to increase the wellbeing of my patients and their resiliency to injury. Dr. Liebenson did an excellent job in combining top of the line clinical pearls that are ready to melt into one's practice essentially the next day. The DVD is great in adding visual cues to enhance the learning experience acquired throughout the textbook. Excellent work.
5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL TEXT FOR ALL SPINAL CARE PRACTIONERS
One of the remarkable aspects of this text, and there are many, is that Dr. Liebenson has added so grandly to his original book.New and re-written chapters reflect the continued evolution of the current biopsychosocial model of lower back pain.New authors havebeen added and contribute further depth to this updated gem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Integrated Approach to Low Back Pain blending Research and Practice
This is one of the most comprehensive texts for rehabilitation of the spine I have seen in over 10 years of practice. As a physical therapist, I've learned that spine rehabilitation requires a broad knowledge of techniques, since every spine patient is different. The modern practitioner needs to have an ecelctic approach to rehabilitation since no 2 patients are alike, even with the same diagnosis.Dr. Liebenson has done a great job in providing the scientific and clinical application of a variety of spine rehabilitation principles with a multidisciplinary approach including a virtual "who's who" of physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, and researchers from around the world.Of particular interest to me is the Czech approach to spinal rehabilitation based on contributions from legendary physicians Vladimir Janda and Karel Lewit.Top researchers including Bogduk, McGill, and Hodges also present the latest evidence-based interventions.I was quite pleased to see the amount of photographs and diagrams illustrating specific techniques and exercises, which is even further enhanced with videos on the enclosed DVD. Long gone (I hope) are the days of "hot packs, ultrasound and massage" as the treatment of choice for low back pain. We know that exercise is the most important component in back rehabilitation, but we must first be able to accurately assess the patient and prepare the tissues for exercise programs specific to the patient needs and goals. Dr. Liebenson and his contributors have given us the tools do do just that... they have captured a virtual paradigm shift in the way we approach the assessment and rehabilitation of the spine.I highly recommend this textbook for any healthcare professional treating spine patients. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Gave Me Some Great Ideas
This book gave me the great idea to work/read while standing up - the top of my dresser is just the right height for that & I'm surprised at how easy and comfortable it is.The premise of the book is that exercise can be incorporated into your everyday routine, once you develop certain habits, and does not have to involve a big disruptive trip to the gym.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Posture Prescription: Top notch book!
Very easy read for a non-fiction book and very good information. It made me very conscious of how my posture was creating my back problems. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Did the trick for me
Everybody probably has different needs but this book absolutely did it for me.I had neck and upper back pain for 2 and a half years and it was so bad I took ibuprofen every single day for that period and was worried I was going to suffer long-term medication consequences.I saw two chiropractors and a top notch physical therapist, all of whom, combined, were only able to make a small difference in the management of the pain.I started doing the exercises in this book in August of 2004 and by September the pain was about 10% of what it used to be.It's now January 2005 and I have occassional flare-ups, most of which can be managed through a brief run-through of the exercises. After taking ibuprofen every day for 2 and half years straight, I am happy to report that in the past five months I have taken it about 5 or 6 times.

5-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this to every pregnant woman!
After a 3 and a half day labour with my first (posterior) baby I wanted to learn all I could about posterior births.I have just given birth again, and using these techniques, had him in 2 and a half hours, with five a five surge long 2nd stage!(and he was 9lbs compared to my 7lbs 3 daughter.)The book does all it says it does, once I started the lifting the surges changed each time to extremely comfortable.I recommend this to all pregnant women, especially those with sway backs, short rises, and posterior babes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for visualization!
Regardless of whether you have experienced back labor or not, this book provides fantastic information about how contractions are working to bring your baby into this world! I found the pictures and descriptions very useful in the birth of my second child in which I had both back and abdominal labor.
5-0 out of 5 stars It Just Makes Sense!
Janie King's book is a must-read for any woman who wants to avoid the discomfort of back labor and help move her birth along with very little effort. Janie's explanation of vectors just makes sense and when women use her "belly lift" technique -- well, let's just say she better be wherever it is that she plans to give birth! Yes, it's THAT effective!

2-0 out of 5 stars Depressing and Pessimistic
I bought this book for inspiration on how to help my lower back/leg pain from a herniated disc.Instead it pretty much told me that I had no chance to improve without surgery and just surrender. It was a pessimistic book. do not get it....seemed outdated as well....pictures of exercises were confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Helpful!
This book is so helpful. The doctor tells you what works - with lists of medicines and home treatments and exercises complete with pictures so you can be sure you're doing it right -- and what DOESN'T work.I tried some of the exercises, and they really work! And he tells you what to expect from your doctor. This is a SUPER HELPFUL book, and if your back has ever hurt, you should read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Back Pan Book EVER!!
I have read a lot on back pain, including books that try very hard to convince you that you never need surgery for any kind of back pain problem. Well, this book is a lot more honest. This doctor tells it like it is. Some back problems will only go away if you have surgery. Other problems, you can fix with exericise and sometimes lifestyle changes. I love the drawings for the exercises!! And the x-rays are really helpful, because you can show them to your doctor and ask intelligent questions. GREAT BOOK!!! ... Read more
