5-0 out of 5 stars This book should come with diagnosis
This book is essential.I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in late 2003 and was given this book as a gift from a survivor I'd never met and still haven't to date. Because of her thoughtfulness, I was able to better understand, work with my treatment and get well again.I have given my copy away, that copy passed on by the person I gave it to again and I trust again since that time.Another friend of a friend was diagnosed in Florida (I'm in Michigan, my benefactor in California) and this was the first thing I did (after saying a prayer for her).Best Wishes for a speedy and full recovery to any/all who have need for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simonton's "Getting Well"
Book is very informative and offers hope and help.It is far too old and needs to be updated to more current situations but many of the facts remain true and it is still probably the best cancer help book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer
The theme of this book is that with positive expectancy of treatment and the patient's positive outlook, you CAN turn your cancer diagnosis into one of renewal of health. A patient CAN do this!Of the many books we have read, this one is outstanding.Dr. Simonton's book, Getting Well Again, is referenced in other volumes as well. The ideas are concrete, meaningful, and most of all---can be implemented. Positive expectancy is the key theme. We have read and reread its passages many times and have received renewed HOPE and OPTIMISM with every reading. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Tough language but few verifiable facts
In a world desperate for health solutions, the uneducated masses flock to purported cures and aids that havenot met the tests of either scientific or medical validity.Alkaline water is one of those potholes that the unsuspecting customer encounters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of the science behind alkaline diets
This was one of the first books I picked up after reading Dr. Young's "The pH Miracle", which had left me with more questions than answers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very valuable book
Forward-thinking health theorists stress the need for our bodies to be less acidic.Civilization and laziness have led most of us to detrimental eating habits, one result being acidic bodies. If you want to test your acidity all you need is ph testing paper from the health food store.Test your urine. Then try to get more alkaline. It isn't easy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Door number three
I have suffered with misdiagnosis, fruitless talk therapy, and then found real hope in a true diagnosis of Bipolar type 2 and ADD, with the right medications. This event was life saving and for those who helped, I am forever grateful. I have found that after slowing down my impulsivity and rapid mood shifts, I was lost regarding what to do with my new and improved brain: I have studied Marsha Linehan's books on DBT, but found them dense and difficult to decipher when the going got rough and I found myself in storm tossed events. What I have needed from childhood onward was a way to see the cascade of event, feeling, belief, and then behavior that has been poorly regulated within me and within my moody, alcoholic, and impulsive extended family. Thomas Marra has elegantly and simply shown the inside of the black box of my earlier life and has offered a path toward positive behaviors and self protective reflexes. He clearly states that those who suffer with mood disorders put an inordinate amount of energy toward a mood state and overreaction to life stressors that perpetuates the misery of an adult child of a painful and dark path. He shows how to gently dissect out feelings toward events and then how my preconditioned beliefs (actual gut level deep instincts) set me up for good or bad outcomes. I wish I had known this when I was a child since I must diligently work this material with several friends and my enlightened wife regularly or I feel overwhelmed with large and then small stressors. His practical and simple and profound exercises cut at the core of my early childhood programming and allow me to find meaning in suffering and real joy when I fight my way out of the paper bag of my life. I will continue to use this book for myself and my family and for those who want something to do with their thoughts and feelings that leads to real life. By the way, I am a family physician, and am thankful to offer those who suffer with mood disorders a true healing balm along with mood regulating medications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Usefull but weak from a theoretical point of view
I'm a PhD in logic, but have red with interest Marra's book, searching for a new and meaningfull perspective on depression and anxiety.
4-0 out of 5 stars very good resource
i like this work.it provides the reader with practical suggestions and exercises.it covers most of the problems encountered in mood disorders and anxiety.it could go more into interpersonal issues.overall, i believe it is a very good resource and i've been using itas a core reading for a therapy group.at the price, new, i think that it is worth the purchase for the reduction in distress and improved coping skills.i'm surprised by the average rating overall by other raters and find it well worthwhile. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stirring Art
Etta Clark scores with Growing Old is Not For Sissies II.Her book is filled with beautiful photography and a second look at some of the subjects from her first book. With frank honesty, she captures the essence of her subjects once again. An excellent book of art for any fan of photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Anyone Working in Gerontology
This book is a must for anyone who works with older adults. It is a photographic essay of some very special people....people who embrace the robustness of life, and who are disciplined to maintain their capabilities as long as possible. Our world is steeped in ageism, that is, believing that older people are only capable of doing things that are "appropriate" for their age. This book shatters those beliefs and provides living examples of people who continue doing what they love to do physically.I wish that Etta Clark would revise this book with a new set of photos every year!I have seen some of these photos over and over again in lectures that people give about aging. It is a book to be owned, not borrowed.

5-0 out of 5 stars So inspiring, I think I'll run a marathon!
Just one look at the photos and all your excuses for being a couch potatogo out the door. This book is filled with inspirational photos of seniorathletes.Helen Zechmeister, age 91, works out 3 days a week, deadlifts200 pounds and can do the full splits.A competitive swimmer, MarieWilcox-Little at 73 has a much better figure than I could ever hope to have(I'm merely 30).My favorite: Ivor Welch,(Volume 1)was never active until83 when his wife his wife passed away.To mourn her death he startedwalking, then running, then running marathons.By the age of 90 he ranfive marathons and 2 half marathons! If Ivor can do it, by golly, so canI!A must have for anyone who wants to enjoy life to its fullest! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide to those of us who have reached 50
Trafford combines her own life experience, the personal stories of many typical Americans whom she has interviewed, and psychological research in constructing this guide for the later years of life. These days, age 50 is only the beginning of life for many people whose children are grown, whose careers are set, and whose health is good. Many Americans will have 30 years or more in this new stage of life. Not all of them will sail around the world or start a new career helping battered women, but most or all will make changes in their lives. This book is her guide to making the most of these years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful; couldn't put it down
This book does a wonderful job of bringing the story of the world's first HUMAN heart-transplant to life--and for those of us who might be in the medical field--some insight, down the road, of what must have driven other heart surgeons.Remember, the University of Mississippi's James Hardy?Did you know that he used a Baboon's heart--and implanted it into a human?Later, in the 1980's, did you know Dr. Bailey (Loma Linda) used a baby baboon's heart and put it into "Baby Fae"?Remember this?Heart surgeons have been plagued by the Prima Donna syndrome for years--and justifiably; however, this book UNDOES history's fame on Christan Barnard and makes him out to be a fame-driven, and ultimately, sorrowful individual stripped of his fellowship in the American College of Surgeons--while making the American surgeons (Drs. Shumway, Lower, Stinson, Kantrowitz) the real heroes of the heart transplant.I couldn't put this book down. . .and you won't be able to either.Christian Barnard's greatest achievment to science was NOT the heart transplant:it was his discovery of the cause of intestinal atresia, and the help his work in transplantation led the American's to re-define the definition of death from "heart" death to "brain-dead."The hero of the heart transplant is Richard Lower and Norman Shumway.Simply outstanding reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Race
For those who lived through the sixties, the space race was a thrilling and defining endeavor.Few who remember it, however, will have forgotten another race that captured people's imaginations at the same time, the race to get a human heart transplanted.Maybe, like the space race, it was overhyped and exaggerated, but like the space race, the competition was a sensation that had serious aspects and effects on the future. In _Every Second Counts: The Race to Transplant the First Human Heart_ (Putnam), Donald McRae has told an important story, the exciting tale of pioneers competing on the frontiers of medicine, with the losers making lasting contributions and the winner descending into a tragic chaos fueled by fame.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Medical Page Turner
Many of us remember the news of the first heart transplant, done, of all places, in South Africa. But only those on the inside knew that several physicians were on the brink of reaching this medical mile stone.Donald McRae describes four physicians working diligently toward the first human heart transplant. The efforts, creativity, egos and motivations of these doctors lay the background to this fascinating medical story. It reads like a medical research timeline, interwoven with facts and factoids about the major players involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it...
This is a fantastic book for learning all about the cholestrol which is the reason why I bought it.However, after I read it, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book to be better than most popular "diet" books out there. It's straight forward (with humor!), contains lots of informative facts, many handy references (web sites, phone numbers, statistics etc.,), considerate of the reader and not out to please any interest groups (i.e., honest). What more can you ask for! This book is well worth your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful
This is a book which thoroughly explores cholesterol. While user-friendly like all of the Dummies series, it is also written with grace and insight. I have found the book interesting and useful. I have completely stopped caffeine beverages, like coffee. After eliminating my coffee habit with the help of a wonderful coffee substitute made from soya beans called "Soyffee", I'm feeling so much better. My doctor recommended it to help lower my cholesterol and promote strong bones. It's available online at www.So y c o f fe e.com to find it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted but accurate reference for cholesterol control
As with many of the "For Dummies" series, Controlling Cholesterol is a well-executed overview of many issues relevant to cholesterol. Author Carol Rinzler's light and humorous discussion ranges from a concise description of what cholesterol is, to many of the different approaches to lowering cholesterol and why "target" values for cholesterol can differ in different people. There's an especially helpful discussion on the effects of various popular diets like Atkins', Sugar Busters, and Protein Power -- pluses and minuses of each.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Better than 10 years therapy
WOW! After spending a number of years in therapy, I must say that I have found this book to be profoundly more helpful than any of the therapy. I truly wished every therapist, especially the HMO therapist that I have had to deal with, had a copy and practiced the formulas in this book. Highly recommended! Read this book and give a copy to you therapist and Physician for them to actually read and use.
3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
I found that this book was heavily skewed to bipolar depression. While the information and exercises given are no doubt helpful to those with bipolar depression, I found that they did not really pertain to my unipolar (postpartum) depression.I would look for different resources if you are suffering from unipolar depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help for Depression

5-0 out of 5 stars Dash Diet works
Not only has the Dash Diet helped with my hypertenion, but I have also lost a few pounds which also helps.Following the suggested foods, you are automatically eating more healthy and have more energy.I would suggest it for anyone and not just those looking to help with hypertension.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy diet!
This diet is very easy and I have already lost 8 pounds after only 3 weeks. My blood pressure is also dropping. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that they do not offer any substitutions for foods that I do not like.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best after the Bible!
Yes, indeed, this is a book that I will always keep. After the Bible, this is the best present I have made to myself. It changed the way I thought about lots of things, it gave me a desire to live the life that God wanted, a healthy one.If I am made with love, why shouldn't I treat myself with love? The recipes are great.Even my husband, who doesn't have hipertension, likes them! So, don't let it pass and get this book soon. You will not regret it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!
I purchased this review book and studied it along with the ACR. Most of the information in the book was on the registry except it lacked pathology and there were a few errors when you took the practice tests in the book. You really had to make sure you reviewed the answers.I got a 90 a my mammo registry!! I highly recommend this book!! I was a self study and was not able to attend any conferences so my information came from this book and the ACR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
I used this study guide and found the questions and the style of questions very helpful for the ARRT Exam.I used this Appleton and Lange Study guide along with a guide from an initial mammography training conference and had no trouble passing the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good format, watch the answers carefully.
Overall, the review questions were helpful, but there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the mistakes seemed to be poor proof reading, but many other questions/answers seem to directly contradict the text in the same book. That can be very confusing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I realized after reading this book how much power our thoughts have over our feelings. It is not easy but we do have the ability to change our negative thought patterns, and by doing that we can help to relieve anxiety and depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have been suffering from anxiety attacks for four years. This book put the causes into perspective.I found instant relief using the techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful.
I did not like this book at all. I thought it was very negative in its attitude towards people who are depressed. It seemed to make light of the subject and act like if you just think positively everything will be great. If you just need to improve your self-esteem a little bit, this might help. However, if you are trying to recover from any kind of significant battle with depression or anxiety, I recommend Undoing Depression by Richard O'Connor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information on effective, inexpensive, nonaddictive, safe, nonsurgical pain control
Unfortunately, many effective, less expensive, safe pain treatments receive almost no advertising, since they are not very profitable for manufacturers or practitioners. FDA approval for a new treatment or procedure usually requires clinical trials costing at least $[...]. Naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, hormones and herbs are not patentable, unless the natural molecule is altered or a new delivery system is developed. Insurers seldom pay for treatments and procedures, which are not FDA approved. Universities and medical schools rely heavily on financial support from pharmaceutical manufacturers. Most effective inexpensive remedies will never receive the expensive newspaper, magazine, radio and television publicity, which more expensive patented prescription medications receive. Many of our patients have had numerous endoscopies and scans, costing thousands of dollars, which did not provide as much useful diagnostic or treatment information as the reader can obtain from reading this book. Teitelbaum's protocols and concepts have been especially effective with our migraine sufferers, many of whom have reduced their migraine pain, 96 to 98 percent, without using any painkillers. Thanks to this book and compounding pharmacists, we have been able to formulate prescription pain creams which relieve 90 to 100 percent of fibromyalgia pain, in our patients, with virtually no side effects and no addiction risk. We have successfully eliminated numerous restless leg syndromes, chronic fatigue syndromes and irritible bowel syndromes, using information contained in this book. The colchicine infusions he recommends eliminated 100% of herniated lumbar disc pain, in one of our patients. The herbal gastritis and reflux protocols have worked for almost every patient we have treated with them. The attention he gives to effective and inexpensive, over the counter and generic medication is especially refreshing, when pharmaceutical manufacturers and physicians seem focused on the most expensive medications and procedures. The book integrates pharmaceutical, over the counter, nutritional, hormonal and herbal treatments. I have had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Teitelbaum, in person, at one of the lectures, he gives free of charge. I have had the additional pleasure of interviewing him twice on our voiceamerica.com internet radio show. His humility continues to amaze me. He recommended that patients continue his herbal pain formula, cautioning that six weeks might be required to experience improvement, when it took away someone's herniated lumbar disc pain, in a couple hours and has kept it away. It reduced my old ski injury pain fifty percent, in about an hour. (I had a morphine injection once for it, when it flared so intensely, I could not walk.) His herbal pain formula also worked safely for one of our fibromyalgia patients, who had gastritis He donates all royalties from his nutritional formulas to charity. He answers very specific, complex health questions for individuals , free of charge, on his endfatigue.com website.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hope & Great Info for CFS, FM & Hypothyroid Patients & Their Drs.
After many years of study and experience in these diseases in the holistic health care field, this book and Dr. Teitelbaum's experiential information provide a number of vital answers to questions that so many people suffering from CFS, FM and Hypothyroidism need to know about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, non-invasive cure!
It's hard to believe that suffering so long with jaw pain could be alleviated so quickly by just doing some simple exercises! I was pain-free in two weeks, and now I only notice pain during times of stress when I must be unconsciously grinding. Then I resume the exercises and once again, the pain disappears! Try these exercises before you take any other action! Some 'cures' make the problem worse, and this is such a simple, inexpensive, and affective solution!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Review
The company I used managed to get the book sent to me in a reasonable amount of time. The book was in better condition than advertised, still shrink-wrapped with the CD in it (a highly useful CD at that). I was very pleased with the book overall and highly reccomend it to anyone studying in this field of psychology. ... Read more
