5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone since 1 out of 3 people will face a diagnosis of Cancer!
This book took me through a whole range of feelings! From anger andoutrage to joy and elation. Anger because of what we, the average consumers, have allowed a once compassionate industry of healing to become because of our lack of personal responsibility! Outrage at Big Pharma and Corporate Medicine for using personal tragedies to fill their deep pockets with billions of $$$ and outrage that they can continue to "deceive the nations" with their "sorceries" on a daily basis! Joy and elation because by the end of the book, I came away feeling impowered with knowledge and information, hope and confidence that I truly can understand and overcome [should I be one of the three] this most dreaded of diseases: Cancer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody - Please Read This Book!
So many books about health-related issues are full of medical jargon and difficult physiological and chemical concepts.Cancer - Step Outside the Box is amazingly clear and easy to understand. The author has done a brilliant job of breaking down "doctorese" into concepts and language that make sense to non-doctors.His description of the very complex Krebs Cycle (through which cells take in and use nourishment) should be understandable for any eighth-grader.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Cancer Book I've Read
Ty Bollinger taught me many things about cancer I didn't know.Coming from most people, this would be a mild compliment.Coming from me, it is somewhat more than that. You see, I have studied natural cancer treatments every day for the last eight years.I've written two books and 100 newsletters on the subject.I've given 25 workshops around the country on Beating Cancer-Gently.I "coach" about 10-12 people a week on the phone. They are people who have read one of my books.I coach them on the details of "what I would do if I were them."

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Approach, A New Attitude
I found this book inspirationally. Not because the author beat the odds in surviving a cancer considered "terminal" by all of his physicians, but because he did it by rationally setting out to explore all of his options and did not just let the "experts" tell him what to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for brain tumor sufferers
Dr. Williams' book is a blow by blow record of how he guided his own survival in spite of his doctors and the constraints of the FDA in overcoming a glioblastoma. His program was well-researched and gives excellent suggestions for options in taking an active part in one's own survival.Should be read by all cancer patients, particularly those suffering with brain tumors. He also published an annual online update of the information contained in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of GBM
I bought this book when my dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) in late 2005.At first I was skeptical of his harsh criticism of the medical institution as a whole, but as my dad's surgery, chemo and radiation went on, I realized how 100% RIGHT ON Dr. Williams is in this book. You MUST buy this if you know someone suffering from this agressive form of brain cancer. Our family purchased three copies so each of us could have their own for reference. If you don't buy any other book about GBM, buy this one.Dr. Williams has survived ELEVEN years from diagnosis with a type of brain cancer that has an average survival time of 14 months. ... Editorial Review

One in ten Americans suffers from thyroid dysfunction, yet most don't realize the mental and emotional components of this condition. "This is the first book to explain the hidden suffering that many patients have difficulty expressing and the first book to provide new ways of helping address and heal this suffering," promises author Ridha Arem, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Ben Taub General Hospital, both in Houston, Texas. This book explains the link between stress and thyroid imbalance; how thyroid imbalance affects your emotions, sex life, and relationships; and how to cope with the effects of this imbalance. Because thyroid problems primarily strike women, a whole section deals with women's health issues, such as infertility, miscarriage, postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Another section provides practical tools, such as evaluating lab tests and self-diagnosis techniques, dealing with treatment problems and side effects, and preventing memory lapses and depression. The book covers lifestyle choices that affect thyroid health, such as diet, supplementation, and exercise. Frequent case studies (usually told as first-person narratives), checklists, and questionnaires help to simplify the material and make it easier to check the medical information against your own situation. Each chapter ends with "valuable points to remember," making review easy. If you suffer from thyroid imbalance, or think you might, this book could be a valuable resource. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!
This book is an eye opener. It has saved us from becoming victims of misdiagnosed thyroid disorders.I bought three books: one for myself, one for my son's doctor and one for my mother-in-law. I learn so much about why we are the way we are.Recognizing the problems is half of the battle.I just can't thank Dr. Arem enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Arem's Book is the Best on the Market
After reading his book cover to cover, I made an appointment with Dr. Arem in Houston. He practices what he writes. A superb diagnostician and brilliant. I highly recommend his book and Dr. Arem as a physician. A Patient

3-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental guidebook

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist, Sexist, Dismissive of Anything but Biology
Feldman's "well-researched" book is a classic human development book, written from a rich white man's view. He does very little to express race and gender as anything but biology. These two things are sociological constructs in addition to being somewhat biologically based. In my world, half-truths are still lies. This book has a lot of pictures of people from different cultures, with different phenotypes, et cetera. It does not walk the walk or talk the talk of a socially responsible take on human development and psychology. For instance he uses Freud to speak of gender roles- a man who named an entire stage of human development after the penis. Just a poor read overall. It felt like going back to high school biology class. Not much more than a survey book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise with current views on life development psychology.
I used this book in our Life Development Psychology. In the course of my study, everything I needed to know is in the book. Feldman is very thorough and organized. I have read other books on this subject in our library but by far this is a superior book. This book deserves 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Vulnerable, Thought Provoking
This healing book was also a real page-turner.I found that the author's honesty and vulnerability was refreshing.Although we all have our own stories, Ms. Roth writes about the feelings that accompany our stories and how these feelings are sometimes temporarily smothered in the warmth and comfort of food.Of course, food can't cure emotional pain...only physical hunger.Ms. Roth's book provides readers with hope that it's possible to heal old pain and put food in it's proper perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth despite the distractions
Roth is a motivational speaker of sorts and it took me a while to get past her lack of psychological or other expertise, but I eventually gave her credibility for having worked with thousands of overweight women.Another gripe I had about the book is that it has a little too much of her personal history, which persuades me that she has issues she isn't dealing with yet herself. But above all that, I found the truths of her main points about complusive eating to be paralyzing for their profundity -- we have to heal ourselves emotionally to get eating under control. Sounds obvious, but she takes the reader much deeper.I think it's on page 125 or 126 where she lists questions that each of us must be able to face and answer in order to conquer both goals.I copied the page and use it as a sort of guide in my own emtional growth. In short, I recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an important book
Ok, so I thought this book was going to be ridiculously dweeby; I saw it years ago and resisted it because the title embarassed me. But I read it in less than 48 hours because it spoke to me. It's a very powerful memoir that I'm sure will resonate with a lot of people. It's so important to confront the past and not oppress ourselves in the present because we've suffered as a result of something outside ourselves. It's also an important alternative to the food nazis and didactic fitness industry types who are just hateful towards people who have real problems to deal with. Very inspiring, very empowering. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good sleeping plan
This is the best book I have read yet!And it works.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book on insomnia, causes, and treatments. It covers a lot more material then another book I've read, "Say Goodnight to Insomnia", Jacobs. However, I do have one gripe with Hauri's instructions for stimulus control therapy. He says it's ok to stay in bed and read or watch TV until you get sleepy, as long as you don't have conditioned insomnia (i.e., the bed/bedroom causes you to become anxious and awake). Jacobs recommends that you don't use the bed for anything other than sleep or sex. That means no reading in bed, or watching TV in bed in order to get to sleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some surprising [but effective] ideas for better sleep.
This is an excellent book that covers a broad range of reasons, and subsequent treatments, for insomnia. If read straight through, I imagine this book would be a bit cumbersome since it is so thorough. I found the technical information about sleep (in the introduction, but also scattered throughout various chapters where it applies) to be fascinating. But it is easy to skip to the parts that only concern you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone!
In a fast-paced society that thrives on junk food, any man and woman should know the extensive role hormones play in their bodies. Hormones regulate all the important activities in our bodies and Dr. Schwarzbein explains what disastrous effect an overly-busy lifestyle and bad eating habits have on your body, effect that will eventually translate into disease and maybe even early death. I really think everyone should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars if reading one, read this one
I've read all her books - really wanted the info but it was overwhelming for me and the nutrition/hormone testing part was complex.Great info - read the Transition II book if reading only one of her books!I'm feeling better than in a long time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like a great plan for optimal health!
Schwarzbein Principle-The Program is the first book of the three that I picked up and I later found that it is a summation of both books one and two.I believe that, although this is her third book, it was for the best that I read this one first since I was then able to decide whether the approach as a whole suited me.I decided that I very much want to change my lifestyle including my eating habits, exercise, stress and hormone levels.

Editorial Review

In 1985 William Styron fell victim to a crippling and almost suicidal depression, the same illness that took the lives ofRandall Jarrell, Primo Levi and Virginia Woolf. That Styron survived his descent into madness is something of a miracle. That he manages to convey its tortuous progression and his eventual recovery with such candor and precision makes Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Little insight into Styron's "madness"
I have just finished reading Styron's book Darkness Visible and I have to say that I was quite under whelmed. The reader is left with little insight into Styron's battle with severe depression. Maybe this is just me, but I find that writers seem capable of expressing their feelings of despair and suicide in only in the loftiest of literary terms. Their writing screams, "I'm famous, well respected and admired, therefore I cannot express myself the way that an ordinary person would. That would be too plebeian." That and the frequent name dropping made me feel alienated from the author. For this reason the reader gets no clear understanding of the nature of his depression. We get glimpses but don't feel privy to his deepest thoughts. In fact, I cannot fathom why he even wrote the book. It certainly doesn't speak to the common people - especially those of us who have spend our lives trying to get the mental health system to advocate for us. Many of us are treated more like criminals than someone with a disease that needs adequate treatment - something that is not going to be found in the state mental health institutions in which the ordinary person is held.
1-0 out of 5 stars Eloquent - isms
As I read this book, what became evident was that his story was an eloquent rendering of deep stage alcoholism and drug addiction and that his depression was not the cause of those things, but a result of those things.Pity that the author doesn't arrive at this understanding, as it may have helped him.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressive
I have to strongly disagree with the editorial and reader reviews on this essay, even though it was a national bestseller. The book is touted as possibly the most rational description of a descent into morbid, clinical depression and suicidal despair. I didn't find it so. Styron was descriptive but rather than probing and baring the depths of his mind and emotions during his depression, I felt he only hinted at the tip of the iceberg. I didn't find any riveting, palpable tracing of his depression. It was rather moribund for a subject with such potential. There is a detachment throughout that many attribute to Styron's calculating dismantling of his own emotions to throw light into the abyss. I found the detachment sort of hovering over the pond, unwilling to dive in, which robs the reader. Candor, yes in some aspects. Precision, somewhat missing.

It is a shame that my copy was not proofread. There are numerous incorrect answers.I had to spend double the time to find all the correct answers. It upsets me that I spent so much money to help me and it created more work for me.I don't think that I will be purchasing another study guide from this publisher in the future. It had the potential to be a great study guide had more attention been taken when it was released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is required reading for my current graduate class: Human Growth & Development. It is a great book that provides in-depth info about human development throughout the lifespan. What's especially helpful is that every life stage is neatly broken down into seperate chapters, and every chapter details the impact of biological, psychological, and social factors on growth. This bookwill definitely help in understanding the process of growth and change in your own life.

4-0 out of 5 stars I used this book for my Dev. Psych class
The chapters are long, about 40 pages each, but I found this book to be excellent for examining the development through the lifespan. If you could see my copy, it's underlined all over the place, there's some great material in this book. I am considering having children and will definately refer to this book if and when I do. 4-0 out of 5 stars Exchanges are the foundation of weight and blood sugar managment.
There is nothing more basic for weight and blood sugar management than the food exchanges. They are called exchanges because the foods in each group can be exchanged with each other and still supply a similar amount of calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and other nutrients. 5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!
I got this book last year.It is simple and easy to read. I ordered the supplements immediately. In 3 months I had lowered my cholesterol 28 points so the Dr. did not make me try a prescription.Even with a foot injury and not exercising, the eating habits and taking the phytosterols this year, my cholesterol was down even more.I highly recommend it!

Comprehensive but specific, easy to read, full of good ideas, practical advice, and stories to illustrate points.A gem of a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Retirement
I felt compelled to submit this review after reading the comment about the book having too much info.Indeed, that is the exact thing I thought was best about the book - the authors obviously are very familiar with all that is our there on retirement and condensed (at almost 500 pages, it's hard to say "condensed"!)it into one excellent book. It has saved me both time and money. The websites, checksheets, and specific recommendations with honest appraisals of places to consider for relocation are invaluable. The chapters on finances and tax are also outstanding (I have a business background), and the info about psychology, health, working, and travel contribute to make it a comprehensive book.
3-0 out of 5 stars The book is so comprehensive it's superficial
