1-0 out of 5 stars The View of a Medical Oncologist
In my oncology practice, patients will often bring me articles or books on "alternative" medical therapies.I try to approach all of them with an open mind. One of the best chemotherapy agents ever developed is derived from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree. You never know where the next advance in medicine will come from.I tell my patients that I divide alternative medicines into three categories: known to help, known to harm, and not enough evidence to say one way or the other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book and very well detailed
I read a lot of comments here on Amazon about this book. I see very negative viewpoints. I take it that these negative viewpoints come from people who are extremely closed minded and stick with the "medical" viewpoint about cancer and such.
4-0 out of 5 stars Adding selenium helps fight cancer
I have great respect for Dr. Clark and her cancer fighting program. However, I feel it is important to add that the nutrient selenium is also important in fighting cancer. This was demonstrated dramatically in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- which showed that people taking 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium daily had only half the death rate from cancer as those given a placebo which did not contain selenium.

5-0 out of 5 stars Least expensive tool to relieve pain!
I am a licensed Massage therapist in Hawaii.I stumbled upon Elaine's book and started using it for my neck & back pain.I was pleasantly surprised at how deep my muscles and spine could be worked while I did two simple things Breath and Relax.Although breathing and relaxing is simple it becomes more difficult the longer the balls are in one position and works deeper into the muscles. At that point I choose either to move positions or focus on relaxing further and deeper breathing to let the ball(s) work deeper.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best gift for chronic pain
This little kit, is a really wonderful and inexpensive way to change your life. Like most office workers, sitting for 8 hours a day, gives a lot of lower back pain and piraformis syndrome. These balls are great to relieve the pain. The only warning I have is to watch how long you stay on the balls. In some areas of the book, she recommends staying on as long as you want. This can do damage if your body isn't ready for it.I made the mistake and did too much of a good thing.Release the muscles and relax into the balls, but remove them and relax some more. This is the perfect workout if you hold your tension, stress and emotions in your muscularture. If you do, and try the workout, you will be free, relaxed, and happy!
5-0 out of 5 stars Pain free finally- I wish I had got this years ago! WONDERFUL !
I have been in very good shape most of my adult life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant treatise on how the mind develops by a credible author with good writing skills
The essence of this book is captured in its very first paragraph, "the mind emerges at the interface of interpersonal experience and the structure and function of the brain." It goes on to explain how this is so in the various chapters that cover memory, emotion, construction of reality (via internal representations), states of mind, self regulation, interpersonal connection and integration.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Brain and Attachment
While having contributed to many publications, The Developing Mind is the first of many books to be written by Dr. Daniel J. Siegel.Dr. Siegel and his work entitled Interpersonal Neurobiology integrates a spectrum of perspectives such as the latest scientific, cultural, and psychological research into an understandable language that has the potential to stimulate positive individual healing and collective changes in our society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably informative!
This is a spectacular book, even if you never get cancer! One of the very best parts is on Dr. Johanna Budwig and her amazing therapies. Although I have been studying natural and alternative health protocols for many years now, I had not yet heard of her work.Dr. Budwig was nominated for the Nobel Prize SEVEN times because of her amazing results in her biochemistry lab. and medical practice, using Organic Cold-pressed High Lignan Flaxseed Oil and Organic Cottage Cheese (or other high quality organic proteins). She cured DECADES worth of clients with her nutritional recipes, even those who had other degenerative diseases...NOT just cancer.Unfortunately, most Western governments hush-hushed her findings and did not allow this information to be made public, because it would take business away from big pharmaceutical companies!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars How to Fight Cancer & Win
This book contains an overview of the famous German Doctor Johana Budvig, and her amazing cure for cancer.Just the stuff American drugcompanies don't want you to know.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but please be sure to add supplemental selenium
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible source of insight
I wish they would make another edition, even though its expensive, well worth its read. written well enough for both laymen and professional. It gets kind of technical at the end, but once you've read enough of the other books, you pretty much can get an idea of the clinical stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making a difficult study simply amazing!
Studying and treating Bipolar Disorder is a difficult trend. Since Kraepelin lessons became available in his book, perhaps "Manic Depressive Illness" is the first to try the almost impossible mission to launch new lights on the matter. And with an amazing approach full of eruditism as well as simplicity and warmth. Untill nowadays, extremely accurate, complete, precise and comprehensive. In little words: in all aspects, amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
Years ago when I was hospitalized for this illness, this HUGE reference and research book literally got me through. When doctors and my own family didn't know what was going on with me, I knew because the things written in this book were detailing (to a hugely accurate degree)my own experiences. Beyond this, it gives invaluable insight into lesser-known facets of this condition that it's apparent not even some physicians have researched, so in depth. The criticisms of some semi-outdated material are valid...certainly there have been advances in medicine, in particular, in the past 10-15 years. However, the bulk of the information is current in its validity and would not change, over time. This is some intense research. There is simply no other reference book out there that is so detailed and thorough. You must buy this book if you are the least bit interested in learning about this illness.Mental health experts should be required by law to own it.Surely, if you yourself have experienced the effects of bipolar disorder or you know someone in your family or life with it, you will literally not be able to put the book down--it's fascinating! Buy it, coupled with co-author Kay Redfield Jamison's other books (she's a psychiatrist AND a bipolar/manic depressive)--she is refreshingly unashamed and clear about her own life experiences in other works.Don't expect any personal examples in this book, as it's strictly research and data. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars What About Mental Fitness?
Whenever I read books like this, it makes me think again that doctor's just don't get it - they ignore the "big picture" of their patient's health and focus on treating symptoms with just Western medicine. That's their business, of course. It's up to consumers to get educated, on that I agree. We can do a lot by keeping physically fit, but what about mental fitness? Whoever talks about that? We are an aging population and more needs to be done to prevent memory loss, etc. Rather than obsolete books, I find services like Agogus.com much more "up" on the holistic perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars transformation
I have not even finished reading this book yet, and already, I am feeling a lot less pain.I am a 27-year-old woman.I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, abdominal wall pain, and irritable bowel syndrome.I have been through physical therapy, special diets, and a chronic pain clinic, not to mention a boatload of painkillers. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great discovery in the quest to rid chronic pain
This works! Do not simply disregard the theories because they are radically different from other approaches and ideas behind chronic pain used by practioneers the world over.If you are open-minded enough to just embrace the idea and remain persistent, you will be pleasantly surprised! The fact is had I RSI FOR two years, but before ever reading sarno the following things did not make sense to me:
5-0 out of 5 stars Sceptic Turned Believer
I am a writer/editor who endured seven years of carpel tunnel-like symptoms: tingling, pain, weakness, and numbness from both wrists all the way up to my neck. I underwent every possible treatment, mainstream and alternative, but nothing worked. One day, someone who had similar pain told me how she was cured by this book. I didn't believe her, but I was desperate: at the time I was taking the highest dosage of my painkillers, and had just quit my job because the pain was crippling. After two months of reading Dr. Sarno's book nonstop and learning how the pain was psychosomatic--which has a bad rap for being fake; it's real pain that is initiated from the brain--I was off of my meds and almost pain-free. Within four months I was pain-free. It's been one and half years and I'm still pain-free!!!! ... Read more

One of the best books I have read on alternative treatments. The chapters on Protocel were fantastic. Anyone contemplating using Protocel should definitely read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative----Easy to Read.
The book itself is very educational, also, has a lot of information on titles of other good reads to look for as well as phone numbers and places to seek treatments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Outsmart Your Cancer Reader Review
Overall, I thought that the book presents a credible case for using alternative treatments for cancer although there are substantial areas where clarification is needed. The author, Tanya Harter Pierce, is not a doctor and states that the book is the result of extensive personal research carried out by herself after a family member was diagnosed with cancer.

Editorial Review

As CEO at accounting giant KPMG, Eugene O'Kelly was so immersed in his job that over thecourse of a decade, he managed to have lunch with his wife on weekdays just twice. His travelschedule was set 18 months out. Once, he was so obsessed with impressing a potential client that hetracked down the man's travel schedule, booked the seat next to him on a flight, schmoozed the guyall the way to Australia, landed the account, and flew immediately back to Manhattan. His Type-A ways vanished when, at age 53, a top neurosurgeon in New York told him he had late- stage brain cancer. "His eyes told me I would die soon. It was late spring. I had seen my last autumnin New York." [p.7] Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful message for all who read...
Having just lost my own mother to Glioblastoma multiforme grade IV, I found this book comforting and relevant. It had a great message to share "take the time to tell those you love about the perfect moments you will remember about them". I have purchased a dozen copies since my first to send out to friends in memory of my own mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for accountant!
What an inspirational book! I read this book few days prior to a job interview with KPMG. Well good news is.. I got the job! but the message behind this book is "balance" and purpose of life. Life is too short and many people knew that, but we need a reminder once a while to put us into perspective again. Gene is a visionary behind KPMG and to lost someone like him is definitely a lesson to learn. As an accountant, we know how many hours we have to spend at work, but think it this way to balance it out.. treat your family like your client. They need as much time as your other clients need you too. I would recommend this book for any accounting major college students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous
This book is phenomenal. Those with a Type A personality will certainly appreciate the approach the author took to put closure on his impending death.Since another reader had mentioned that Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" was better, I had decided to read both books.I absolutely loved Chasing Daylight better although both books have value.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dash Diet Action Plan
It was a great read. It was informative but not a boring. I would reccomend this to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes it easy!
The other books, and the federal guidelines didn't make it easy to follow the DASH diet. Finally, a book that makes it practical. It has real life suggestions, without getting too bogged down in the minutia of how the research was done. This plan helped me lower my blood pressure. And I didn't expect that I would find it so easy to lose weight, too. Real common sense approach (that isn't really so common today). Definately recommended for anyone who wants a healthy way of eating, rather than a fad diet that makes big promises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but overpriced
When I received this book, I almost thought it was the wrong book.Although there is a lot of information, much of it is common sense.I received another book that was less than $10 more but the author is well known and the book was three times the size with pictures and extensive information. If this DASH book is going to get many sales, the price definitely needs to drop.I was honestly expecting a lot of recipes and would never have ordered it if I hadn't seen it first.Sorry. ... Editorial Review

People around the world have found inspiration in the story of Lance Armstrong--a world-class athlete nearly struck down by cancer, only to recover and win the Tour de France, the multiday bicycle race famous for its grueling intensity. Armstrong is a thoroughgoing Texan jock, and the changes brought to his life by his illness are startling and powerful, but he's just not interested in wearing a hero suit. While his vocabulary is a bit on the he-man side (highest compliment to his wife: "she's a stud"), his actions will melt the most hard-bitten souls: a cancer foundation and benefit bike ride, his astonishing commitment to training that got him past countless hurdles, loyalty to the people and corporations that never gave up on him. There's serious medical detail here, which may not be for the faint of heart; from chemo to surgical procedures to his wife's in vitro fertilization, you won't be spared a single x-ray, IV drip, or unfortunate side effect. Athletes and coaches everywhere will benefit from the same extraordinary detail provided about his training sessions--every aching tendon, every rainy afternoon, and every small triumph during his long recovery is here in living color. 2-0 out of 5 stars trash
we all know this story, but if you want to read a cocky, self absorbed version from lance's perspective pick this up. horribly written, some attempts are made at poeticism ("I keep riding, into the highest peering hills, up the pitch of a mountainside, where green leaves quiver in the cold sun") but overall i'd probably get more out of a 2 page summary of his life on wikipedia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
Lance provides a lot of insight into his life, who he is, and how he became the greatest cyclist in the world in this book! This book covers his life from birth to the 2nd Tour de France win.The dedication he has to his job (cycling) is so impressive.A truly inspirational story....

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic- One of the best books I have ever read
I must say that this is easily one of the best books I have ever read, and probably the most inspirational. It delves deep into the realms of the human spirit, against the worst of odds.Lance Armstrong isn't just the single greatest athlete of our generation, hes an American hero, and he beat cancer.Yes, he did not just survive, he defeated it, and proved it can be done.I have never had cancer, I have never fought against unbelieveble odds. This man has, and he tells his story in a remarkable, touching, and humane way.Fantastic Read. ... This book is amazing. If you have had recent weight loss surgery or if you are thinking about having it, you must read this book.Paula outlines everything you could ever imagine and answers the questions that we all have about weight loss surgery. After reading this book there is no doubt in my mind that I am going to have the weight loss surgery. In the book Paula gave me the courage to want a better and new life for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a life saver for me
Being aware that my surgery would be life altering, I was nervous about how to proceed with the rest of my life post-operation. Paula Peck's book was written with such care, concern and intelligence that upon turning the final page I realized my anxiety had completely left me and that I literally held a blue-print for success in my hands. Thank goodness for Paula's sensitivity, charm and wit. This is a honest guide to living and coping after weight-loss surgery - and who knew? A funny one too! Kudos for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pre-operation necessity.
I could not put Exodus from Obesity down.I highlighted it and even felt compelled to email Paula Peck, the author.
