5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading
The author of the bestseller Reviving Ophelia this times takes us on a journey through the lives of our elders. Following the lead of Bernice Neugarten at the University of Chicago, she distinguishes between the "young-old" and the "old-old". This book focuses mainly on the later, telling the stories of people who are coping with loss and illness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Country:Navigating the Emotional Terrain of Our Elders
This book is written in a readable style that holds your interest.I bought it to help understand my elderly father who is suffering from dementia, but I found it told me a lot about myself and what I will want and need in the next 20 years.Mary Pipher's insightful and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another country: the tourist perspective
Not being "old-old" myself, with both parents dead, I picked up this book out of curiosity.Piper does not mince words. She says at the outset, "Old age is not for sissies," and she goes on to describe life as an old person in a country designed for the young. It's an apt metaphor: the old learn a new language and a new terrain.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy newer edition!
Dr. Sarno's concept is sound, but this is his first report, rather old. There are two newer books, the best of which, of course, is the 2006 "The Divided Mind : The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders", which I highly recommend.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money
I should have listened to the people who wrote negative reviews, this book is a complete and total ripoff, it tells you nothing , save your money and buy a bottle of wine instead

1-0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?
Did I miss something?Clearly from the title alone Dr. Sarno believes tension and tightening of muscles is the cause of most back/leg pain.Where is the chapter that gives you steps to change this?!I didn't need to buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
After reading all the 5 star reviews for the predecessor (Pain Free) to this book," I checked it out at the library to see if the program really worked. The program sounded to good to be true, but the volume of 5 star reviews really made me want to try it out. After about a week and a half on the program, I no longer had bad arthritus pain in my wrist, and was able to get off the glucosamine. Glucosamine worked for me, but it is expensive. Since doing the exercises, my shoulder pain isalso much less severe.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource-Poor binding
The book is an incredible resource for women. It gives a new paradigm for viewing our bodies and for believing in the possibility of health. We are well designed, we just need to use our bodies according to the design!

The information in this book is invaluable for anyone who has a difficult older parent. It takes you through a number of scenarios and then shows you how to better deal with those situations.Just reading this book and incorporating some of the suggestions has taken a huge weight off of my shoulders.
3-0 out of 5 stars Book is a recap of material already out there
The book really didn't offer much that I hadn't read many times over on relating to difficult people.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a lifesaver
Five years ago, I was struggling with the gut-wrenching dilemma of how to care for my widowed mother, who lived 5 hours from me and vacillated between smothering love and unmitigated rage. Her physical, financial and emotional deterioration and over dependence on me to be her savior were crippling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good book in need of a copyeditor
If you're already familiar with the terms 'lateral' and 'medial', then you'll know that "Latoral joint Compartment" in figure 2-1A&B on p. 29 is probably not what they meant, especially since it's across from the "Medial joint Compartment" in the same illustration. And then again on p. 31 in figure 2-3A&B there is the "Later Menicus" [Lateral Meniscus] across from the "Medial Meniscus"

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a unique niche
I applaud John McManamy for writing an excellent, insightful and information packed book!John has the unique perspective of not only being a very knowledgeable authority on depression and bipolar disorder, but also a consumer himself because of his diagnosis. He is brutally honest about issues ranging from medications, the role of sleep in wellness, the seriousness of the illness . . . there is no sugar coating or glossing over topics. At the same time, John intersperses the book with a refreshing sense of humor and candor.Unlke many books that present the facts in a dry clinical format, this book will bring a smile to your face or have you laughing out loud at comments such as "anyone taking ***** with either of these drugs is simply begging for an audition as the next Macy's Santa" (in reference to medication induced weight gain).
5-0 out of 5 stars the most up to date and readable book on this subject out there
I am one of those people who struggle with my Bipolar I disorder and buy every book out there on the subject hoping to find something new, or something I can learn I didn't know on my illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives.
Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."
4-0 out of 5 stars Selenium helps fight breast cancer and other cancers as well
The nutrient, selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to be effective in fighting breast cancer. Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet containing 200 microgram (mcg) of selenium for seven years had only half the death rate from cancer as a similarly large group of people who received yeast tablets containing no selenium. The reduction in death rate was higher for breast cancer than for certain other forms of cancer. The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it is hard to accept but it has relieved my asthma greatly..
After a lifetime of being told that salt is bad for me, I finally let go and started to use celtic sea salt liberally (as prescribed in the book). At first I only drank the water, but adding the salt completely maximized my progress. At 4 separate times this past weekend, I stopped my own asthma attacks at each onset. It took me about 7-10 minutes each time. It took alot for me not to use my inhaler, and to just give the water & salt a chance to work.I am extremely grateful and rather emotional about it, since I thought I would be on my proventil inhaler for the rest of my life. The inhaler has caused a number of side effects, and I am now planning a detox to remove the residue of this drug from my body, which I've been dependent on for more than 27 years. And I've only been doing this seriously for 2 weeks, (and getting better with each day). I thank "Dr.B" for giving me my health back (along with hundreds of others whose testimonials I've read on the www.watercure2.com site). These are the same testimonials I was so compelled to read again and again, because I just could not believe and accept that something so simple could cure this disease that left me so weak and scared about the future of my health. Not to mention, very likely preventing other diseases I would be on the road towards. I suppose this is my own testimonial, because it really happened, and I hope that readers searching for an answer will forget their fears (that it won't work) and try it. Yes, it is still hard even for me to believe...even though it continues to work for me. But I do know for sure that I will never stop Dr.B's water & salt prescription. I will say this - if you want your health back, just take it back by taking action.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor
No real info other than what I already knew. There was a small two sentence reference to the info I was seeking.A real rip-off!I'm going to return the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but add magnesium for even better results
There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective. ... Howard and Marika explore topics that a near and dear to us, that we must pay attention to if we wish to make this journey look like what we have always hoped for. Sometimes we all need a map to get us where we want to be!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Purpose-Filled Life
The book, Too Young to Retire, as well as the Stone's web site and book study groups, is their effort to teach people how to live a life filled with purpose, rather than the emptiness of so many retirees' lives.
2-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money and Skip This One
Unless you are a far-left political idealist; "open-minded," as Mr. and Mrs. Stone say, their book offers little useful information for retirees. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars just passed the boaeds
Used this and Dr. Kilkenny text and passed the boards on the first try. Great resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars BOTH BOOKS VERY HELPFUL, WELL WORTH THE COST
I AGREE THAT THERE WERE SOME MINOR ERRORS BUT OVERALL A WORTHWILE TEXT. THERE ARE NOT MANY OTHER SOURCES THAT ONE CAN REVIEW TO GET A SAMPLE OF WHAT WILL BE ON THE BOARDS.THE EPOCHS WERE GOOD EXAMPLES OF WHAT WILL BE FOUND ON THE TEST. THE AUTHOR SHOULD PUT OUT SEVERAL MORE EDITIONS OF THE WORKBOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think
This book gives the reader an excellant overview of the subject matter. To my eye there are some errors but they do not reduce the quality to any significant degree. The questions are very deverse. I especially like the sample epochs. As a trained tech I think that this book is very helpful for the boards. It compliments the Fundamentals text well. It could be made better but it is not as near as costly as any of the APT materials. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cholesterol resource
The worst thing about health research is that what's considered healthy today is considered bad the next and revised back to good the day after that. Mr Kowalski makes this a great book because he collates all the best research, summarizes it and in most cases gives a rational recommendation based not just on the research but on the results he has achieved.
5-0 out of 5 stars the best advice!
I've ordered this book before--I lend it out and replace it again and again. My friends always keep their copies because they have the same experience I have (and they want to keep the recipes on hand). Using its advice, I've successfully lowered my cholesterol dramatically without the dangerous drugs that are prescribed everywhere today. It's realistic, easy-to-read, and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me
I temporarily live in Australia, I went home (US) in January and had a physical, my cholesterol was sky high, they immediately put me on statin drugs, no diet, no health advice, just the drugs, forgot to mention female and 38.They wanted me to be re-tested in 3 months even though they knew I would be in AU at the time.I went to the Dr. here locally, he immediately took me off the drugs and wrote me a list: fish oil twice a day, metamucil for fiber, red wine and proactive (plant steriod).I also followed this book, and even though it was difficult to get some of the suppliments here locally, I did my best. After 3 months following the AU Dr. and Kowalski, I droped my tri-glycerides by 200 units, total cholesterol by over 40 and I have a chol/HDL ratio of 2.7.The doctor's advice was to stay with my current regiment.I will be re-tested in another 4 months and feel confident it will be much lower than present levels. The book gave me hope and the Dr. in Australia gave me a chance to cure bad cholesterol naturally.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insight into the big question in a roundabout and gentle way
This book is a linear commentary on the little things in life. Each page and comment has a picture of an animal that adds meaning to the comment -almost always in a make you smile or outright laugh kind of way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love this book.Everytime I read it I get something else from it.My kids like it to because of the great animal pictures.I have let co-workers borrow it and they had to buy their own.Wonderful for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book - works for me
I'm a golfer that has frequently had some degree of lower back pain.Suffered a severe lower back strain four months ago.Bought the book and started the routine after that.It has made a big difference for me.My back feels better than it has in years.I strongly recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD WHIPPING
This is an excellent book for dealing with this common problem afflicting so many people but it doesn't explain why Pilate ordered Jesus to be whipped. That is definitely not the way to relieve back pain!

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtfulm, safe process, but does it work????
I felt that Dr. Vad's approach was safe and logical. He has you perform easy basic exercises for some time, and then graduate to more strenuous exercises.I must say, though, as someone is in pretty fair physical condition to begin with, I felt the exercises were too basic, and not at all challenging. There didn't seem to be an abundance of info on treatments or back pain causes either.I guess though, the real proof is, "Did it work? Did following the program letter for letter improve my back pain?"And, in my case, which of course is very individual, after following the program to the "T" for 8 weeks, it really did nothing me.Decent book, but I'm still looking for the magic bullet. ...
